The result of the discussion was: Reverse Rename as a rename is the equivalent of a reverse merge and retain history. (non-admin closure) William Allen Simpson (talk) 06:50, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: duplicate of the suggested target category Robby (talk) 22:49, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Drag (entertainment). (non-admin closure) William Allen Simpson (talk) 06:44, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The main article was renamed to Drag (entertainment). I wouldn't oppose Category:Drag art or Category:Drag (art) as well. Xdtp (talk) 21:18, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename, seems a straightforward case of WP:C2D. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:24, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename While it wasn't a formal WP:RM, the main article was renamed per consensus on the talk page. -RevelationDirect (talk) 23:29, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename Agree, drag has always been entertainment and culture, above fashion etc Carlinmack (talk) 14:39, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:List of detained journalists and activists in Ethiopia[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Imprisoned journalists in Ethiopia and then purge. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 14:19, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Improper category. For starters, categories for people are named in the format "X", not "List of X", so even if this were keepable it would have to be renamed Category:Detained journalists and activists in Ethiopia. But the even bigger problem is that we don't have any scheme of "Detained journalists and activists" categories, or even "Detained anything" categories, for this to be a part of -- and even if we did, "detained journalists" and "detained activists" would have to be two separate categories, not one unrelated-things-smooshed-together category. So I can't even justify just renaming this, because there's no established parent tree for it. Bearcat (talk) 15:40, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bearcat. I see your point. It seems Category:Imprisonment and detention already exists. Woud it help to rename it to Category:Imprisonment and detention in Ethiopia. I already seen Category:Imprisonment and detention in the United States. Petra0922 (talk) 16:15, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Cities with Active Volcanoes[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 14:18, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Overcategorization for a non-defining intersection of only trivially related traits. Cities are not defined by the question of whether there's a volcano in or near them -- and cities can obviously be impacted by volcanoes much further than just 19 miles away from the city centre, so the category is also imposing an arbitrary inclusion cutoff that violates WP:ARBITRARYCAT. As always, the category system is not just a free playground to generate lists of absolutely any intersection of characteristics for which you think a list might be of interest to somebody: we categorize topics by their defining characteristics, not by every last characteristic they may have. And even if this were somehow keepable, it would have to be renamed for incorrect capitalization anyway. Bearcat (talk) 15:30, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: "Films by genre" category for a trivial intersection of genres. We do not have any scheme of "Revenge films" for this to be part of in the first place, so there's no need for a special category to distinguish "supernatural" revenge films from non-supernatural revenge films — and films with supernatural-related plots don't need to distinguish supernatural revenge films from supernatural non-revenge films either. Category:2023 sports events in Telford[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure) William Allen Simpson (talk) 06:37, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT for sports events in a town that doesn't have any scheme of "YYYY sports events in Telford" for this to be a part of, and isn't large enough that one would be expected -- even the logical parent Category:Sport in Telford contains absolutely zero articles about any dated sports events that could be used to populate such a thing at all. And for added bonus, even the single entry here is merely a redirect, not a standalone article. So this would be fine if there were numerous articles to file here, but is not needed just to overcategorize one redirect. Bearcat (talk) 15:14, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: split, merge, and rename, respectively. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 14:25, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Following other hierarchies e.g. Category:Law by former country. The contents of the second and third nominated categories belong in the new target. – Fayenatic London 13:42, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Sports navigational boxes. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 14:27, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT. Only one disc golf template (pending likely deletion). –Aidan721 (talk) 12:40, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I guess both should be merged, shouldn't they? Marcocapelle (talk) 21:26, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Wikipedians by interest in a franchise. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 14:28, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Rename to make it clear this is a container category. * Pppery * it has begun... 04:21, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Same comment as above for subcategories "Wikipedians who like". No objection to the proposed rename. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:22, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Wikipedians by genre interest. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 14:28, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: I do not see the difference between this category and its sparsely-populated parent. If kept, rename to Category:Wikipedians by literary genre interest to match the name of the parent. * Pppery * it has begun... 04:23, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment, the subcategories contain "Wikipedians who read" and "Wikipedians interested in" respectively, so there is a slight difference. And one might argue that "Wikipedians who read" subcats ought to be deleted. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:18, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: keep. (non-admin closure) William Allen Simpson (talk) 06:35, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Single-entry WP:SMALLCAT for just one player. As always, every football club does not automatically get one of these the moment one former player has a Wikipedia article to file in it -- there would have to be five or six former players with Wikipedia articles before a category for them was justified, and it doesn't aid navigation at all to have a dedicated category just for one person. Bearcat (talk) 11:29, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:41, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, currently 8 players. Geschichte (talk) 14:16, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note: This discussion has been included in WikiProject Football's list of association football-related page discussions. GiantSnowman 13:23, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Geschichte; in future I suggest that nom sees if they can populate a category before nominations for deletion. It's easily done by clicking 'what links here' and then finding all the relevant bios that apply. GiantSnowman 13:25, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • While I do not disagree with that per se, it is still first and foremost the responsibility of the creator of a category to populate it as good as possible. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:33, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • It is the responsibility of the creator to name the category, add inclusion criteria, provide suitable parents and populate each category before moving on (if WP:SMALLCAT applies, as it does here). People who don't do this should be banned from category creation after a few warnings. Oculi (talk) 23:51, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:People's Republic of China administrative division templates. bibliomaniac15 06:38, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: These categories are semantically identical, unless I'm missing something. SilverStar54 (talk) 23:51, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Or merge per nom, assuming the other countries will be nominated too (whether or not speedy). See discussion about that below. For sure a merge should take place somehow. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:45, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge as nominated. Country subdivision is/was a made up name by a user who has long since been banished for sockpuppetry. Sadly, the damage persists.
    William Allen Simpson (talk) 02:38, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Unanimous consensus to merge, but direction is undecided.

When nominating this, I didn't know this problem extended beyond these two pages. After looking at the evidence User:William Allen Simpson provided here, I support my original proposal much more strongly. It seems like Category:Country subdivision templates is the exception here rather than the rule. Is there any other missing context? SilverStar54 (talk) 21:28, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you. Though there is still a large amount of categories under it with "subdivisions". Marcocapelle (talk) 07:26, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • And yet, you have not yet updated your !vote above, so that this nomination can run to completion. The rest can speedy.
    William Allen Simpson (talk) 04:18, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Done now. Ideally, all countries should be renamed simultaneously, but the merge needs to happen anyway. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:45, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT for just one person, and an entire branch of other categories created solely to wedge this small category into the tree. As always, every minor league football club does not automatically get one of these the moment one former player for them has an article -- there would have to be at least five or six former players for this club before a category for them was warranted, and it does not assist navigation at all to have a dedicated category for just one. The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Volcanism of New Jersey and Category:Volcanoes of the United States. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 14:32, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This category is a near-duplicate of Category:Volcanism of New Jersey. After removing all articles which did not actually say that the subject was a volcano -- as opposed to having been formed by volcanic action -- there remains only one article in the category. If this category is kept, it should be made a sub-category of "Volcanism in New Jersey", but it would better to only keep one of them. Beyond My Ken (talk) 03:35, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. bibliomaniac15 06:40, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The linked category nl:Categorie:Hertogdom in de Nederlanden uses Netherlands in its historical plural, thus meaning all the Low Countries including modern Belgium and Luxembourg. This allows us to include the Duchy of Luxemburg, Duchy of Bouillon, Category:Duchy of Jülich, Category:Duchy of Limburg, Duke of Lothier etc. Besides, most of the Duchy of Brabant and bits and pieces of the Duchy of Guelders were also located in modern Belgium, so it makes sense to broaden the category. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 01:35, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Alt rationale: content doesn't match description (dukedom =/= duchy), relevant content is already in Category:Former polities in the Netherlands, purging would result in a WP:SMALLCAT/empty cat, so deletion is perhaps a better option. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 01:26, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Odesa Archaeological Museum. bibliomaniac15 06:42, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Contains two bios, one of which mentions Odesa Archaeological Society, the other Odesa Archaeological Museum, but neither mentions the school. – Fayenatic London 12:43, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: the category appears to be translated from uk:Категорія:Одеська археологічна школа, which has many member articles. I believe it refers to school in the sense of an academic movement or academic community (the museum is also a scholarly research institute). If it is to be retained in this sense, it should be renamed Category:Odesa archeological school or Category:Odesa archaeological school.  —Michael Z. 16:34, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Spelling: Given that the Odessa Society of History and Antiquities was dissolved in 1922, that name should be spelt with double ss for historical reasons (pre-1991), but the Odesa Archeological Museum and the Odesa Archaeological Society still exist today, so I think the category should be renamed Category:Odesa Archaeological School per WP:C2B Odesa (speedy-renamed 24 July 2022). The name of the museum (which is temporarily closed, and whose website is down) is currently spelt in U.S. spelling e in Archeological on English Wikipedia, but the organisation itself seems to use British spelling ae in Archaeological in both their offline website URL http://www.archaeology.odessa.ua// (which does still use a double ss, but also a British ae) and their official Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/oam.nanu/ Одеський археологічний музей - Odesa Archaeological Museum (which uses a single s, and a British ae), so I think that article should be renamed with British ae. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 21:26, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Add to that their official Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/od_archaeology_museum/ Odesa Archaeological Museum. The museum may be closed, their website may be down (both apparently since the February 2022 invasion), but they retain official presence and activity on social media, which favour a Ukrainian spelling of Odesa and a British spelling of Achaeological. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 21:41, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PPS: I've WP:BOLDly renamed it to Odesa Archaeological Museum per the arguments I've given above. This adds a WP:C2B argument for renaming. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 21:56, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Archaeology isn't a British spelling; it's one of the few words that is usually spelled with ae in all varieties of English (see the first footnote in archaeology). – Joe (talk) 10:15, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I actually didn't know that. I guess we could also write Wikipaedia from now on (haha)? Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 01:20, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • REname to Category:Odesa archaeological school, adopting the current Ukrainian spelling of the name and the English spelling chosen by the museum. Peterkingiron (talk) 18:52, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename to Category:Odesa Archaeological Museum. Having a post graduate course at a museum doesn't necessarily make it a "school". Museums are not uncommonly places for research and learning. And a google search for "Odesa archaeological school" on google only gives Wiki results. I think we're in WP:OR/WP:SYNTH territory here, if we continue to call this a "school". - jc37 10:13, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
