Civility[edit]

Yes, I know, I know. But as I mouthed off earlier, there's more to civility than the avoidance of naughty words. The fellow in question didn't just delete an article, he deleted an article hours after another admin restored it and did so despite a "hangon" and despite references that included the New York Times. And needless to say, it was well-written and Wikified. On that basis alone, I think it should have already been restored until an AfD debate took place. I hope you can understand my frustration and, on a personal level, forgive my civility transgression. Shaundakulbara 01:31, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ship-eating pandas on SS Antenor (1924)[edit]

Hello again, and gosh, thanks for that. I've got lost in a world of Antenors this afternoon ... I thought I'd poke around some more and check out the panda story as it seeemed such a ripping yarn - however I've only found one source for it. It's not beyond the realms of possibility though as this website [1] lists all the arrivals to western zoos in the 30s and 40s - 14 in all - of which four came to London Zoo in Dec 1938. So I'm wondering if the story is in essence true, and it's just the year that's wrong. Or if I ought to remove it as it doesn't seem to have enough supporting evidence? Whaddyareckon? By the way - I came across this woman whilst panda-poking and it sounds like she led a life: her Wikipage doesn't really convey her particular ripping yarn either. I love the bit about how she'd take a taxi if the journey was over two blocks, and then heads off on an expedition to the wilds of the China/Tibet border. By the way - been following your heady DYK progress with admiration. How do you do it? Jasper33 15:57, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Misleading pics - Hol Chan Marine Reserve[edit]

Hi Yomangani, I really enjoyed your article on Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Articles on the Belize Barrier Reef were sorely lacking. In fact I can't believe these articles didn't exist until Jan. 2007. Anyway, I understand that you want your article to be illustrated with good photos but the selected pics leave the perception that they were taken there. Having been to Hol Chan, the Brain coral image can really create an unrealistic expectation. -- P199 17:25, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, location-specific articles should only have pics showing that location. Just my opinion, I won't force it. Anyway, the replacement pics are a great addition. Don't mind me if I slightly rearrange them - don't like the large white gaps... -- P199 19:45, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

dyk[edit]

Thanks! I would have left it, but after reading it, and reading the dyk article. There was no mention of a.) that specific act being associated with that date and b.) no mention of the occurance being mentioned happening of that date. Would it have been better to put random act of date? -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 14:28, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and if you feel it more appropriate in there, please put it back. I was just fairly confused by reading it and figured it would be better out but if it actually makes it worse, I will be glad to replace it. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 14:31, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DYK 2[edit]

Since you have a monopoly on DYK, maybe you'll know what to do with this. Gimmebot can't automatically add DYKs to the articlehistory template because the DYKs aren't substituted. Can you get folks to subst them? Then Gimmebot will automatically add them - see Talk:The Four Stages of Cruelty. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:05, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And congratulations by the way - too bad it didn't work out so you could have had two articles in one promotion :-) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:06, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure I've got the lingo right - going by what Gimmetrow says when I find a DYK the bot doesn't pick up - can you tell by looking at Cruelty? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:45, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NCIS episodes[edit]

  • I have discovered that List of NCIS episodes links to articles about every single episode (there are many). None establish notability, none have references, all contain (at most) plot summary and quotes (plus a sprinkling of original research-type observations). I tagged a few of them before I thought there must be a better way to go about getting these AfD posted and merged or whatever. I'm not really sure. As you have been a pundit in similar areas of concern in the past I am hoping you might want to take a look at the assemblage and handle it somehow.
  • Also, User:MatthewFenton has been removing notability and reference tags and has ordered me to "cease". I'm not sure how to handle this either.

Can you help here? I'm at a loss. Thank you sir! -Shaundakulbara 20:37, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No[edit]

I've been informed previously (and seen some) of the mess that attends academic naming of flora and fauna. MO: they're caught between their descriptivist jobs and their prescriptivist training.

But no, with large mammals the upper case is not used. You would write lion (not Lion) in an e-mail to me, and researchers do the same in their papers (as I've gathered in writing the jaguar FA). I don't like these post-hoc decisions on wiki. Marskell 00:31, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's the shifting without discussing that I'm finding annoying here. I've rv'ed three times, and will stop, but I don't understand why Uther would be so unilateral with this. At the very least, the rest of Panthera should show the pattern, but it doesn't. I've checked the refs previously: none of the sources use upper case. I think nomenclature decisions of this sort are almost a type of OR on Wikipedia. We're deciding what should be done? We should be describing what is done. Wonderful—airplane reading! I find it hard to go between footnotes and references when there are a lot of books and they aren't alphabetical by last name. Would you mind switching the cite templates on the books to have last name first on author and putting them in alphabeticl order? It just makes it easier to find the ref that corresponds with the note. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:14, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Much better; now you have some footnotes that have first name first; can you make them last name first for consistency? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:59, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, someone (can't recall who) has started requesting wikilinking full dates on footnotes, including last access dates (I went back and re-did all the TS notes), so you might want to do that pre-emptively. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:01, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It certainly is annoying; I wish the cite templates would just be consistent or allow one to use the date formats of one's liking. argh. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:32, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Four Stages of Cruelty[edit]

I just wanted to say how much I liked the Four Stages article, even though I've dived in to make some amendments! Hope you didn't feel slighted. :) GDallimore 18:01, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If I get a chance at the weekend, I'll take a look at the John Steinbeck article. However, I'm keen not to lose too much focus on the articles that really interest me for a little while - don't want to leave a trail of half-finished projects. I'm a minor fan of Hogarth which is why I dived into Four Stages, and I really think Aerotel v Telco and Macrossan's application has a FA shot once I've filled in some gaps. I want to sit down and re-read Sutton Hoo properly, too, which has had some great additions recently. Take a look.GDallimore 18:22, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress and Marriage à-la-mode - even William Hogarth himself - can all do with work. There is no shortage of things to do [I have not found the time to tackle a certain rotunda yet :) ] -- ALoan (Talk) 18:39, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Glad I'm not the only person who thinks Sutton Hoo is getting a bit unwieldy. Current consensus is that its length is appropriate to its subject. I need to have a proper dig and propose a breakdown. One day, Wikipedia will be complete :) GDallimore 09:01, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For what it is worth, two Gatti brothers, Agostino and Stefano, owned the Adelphi Theatre at around this time, and I have seen reference to a brother of Carlo, Giuseppe.

DYK selection[edit]

Hi Yomangani, may I ask how is the DYK next update is selected? I am asking this because of the recent move where the nominator him/her-self moved his/her own DYK nomination to the next update, not to mention the article is still a stub. Is it a common practice? His other nomination was noticed by someone that was only a stub, but his other move passed through DYK. I'm afraid that if this is common, then other nominators would directly move their own nominations to the next update. Please note that this is not because I nominated an article, but it is just on my watchlist. Thanks. — Indon (reply) — 14:19, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
