Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! -- Francs2000 | Talk 15:11, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm mostly going to be working on the articles Deer Hunter (video game), Nashville sit-ins, and Lord of the Nutcracker Men, which I'll create once I finish the book. Toothpaste 4 July 2005 22:38 (UTC)

GCOTW[edit]

Why did you remove the tag from Mega Man X (game) and add it to RollerCoaster Tycoon 3? Mega Man X won with 12 votes. Thunderbrand July 4, 2005 22:28 (UTC)

It said that the next one was to be selected on July 4th. Sorry if I made a mistake. I'll fix it back. Toothpaste 4 July 2005 22:31 (UTC)

Nevermind, it's already been fixed. Toothpaste 4 July 2005 22:33 (UTC)

It's my fault. I forgot to change the date. Thunderbrand July 4, 2005 22:37 (UTC)

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I noticed that the Southern U.S. Collaberation had the same problem with date updating, so I fixed it. Toothpaste 4 July 2005 23:31 (UTC)

USSCOTW[edit]

I just wanted to let you know, History of South Carolina(which you voted for is the current USSCOTW. Please come and help make it a featured-standard article. Falphin 22:55, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The E=MC2 Barnstar[edit]

The E=MC2 Barnstar, as awarded to Toothpaste for her contributions to the SCOTW and many science articles by Deryck C..

Hereby I award you with this E=MC2 Barnstar for your active participation in brushing up many science-related topics and in the SCOTW!

Happy Barnstarring! --Deryck C. 09:43, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My first Barnstar! Thank you very much! I bought a Biology for Dummies book in May, I checked out five others from the library, and I'm reading through all of them and looking for things to add. Toothpaste 12:03, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

With my greatest pleasure! I also enjoy science very much, both at school and life. Deryck C. 15:01, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot one thing. People usually put their barnstars on the user page, not the user talk, so move it if you like. Deryck C. 02:58, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nuttall[edit]

Hello Toothpaste. Great that you work on the Nuttall list. However, many articles are just old spellings of existing articles, for example Yambo is really Yanbu' al Bahr. In order not to duplicate articles, it should be researched first, if the article exists under a more modern spelling. Another case is Zillerthal, which is [1], so the "h" vanished. I'm currently checking your y and z edits, but please check the others too. Cheers--J heisenberg 11:22, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Hi, Toothpaste, just wanted to say thanks for helping to publicize our fledgling Medicine Collaboration of the Fortnight. I'm full of high hopes for it! — Knowledge Seeker 05:22, July 30, 2005 (UTC)

You're welcome. I'm also adding all the information under "Medical topics in other collaborations" to WP:SCOTW. Toothpaste 05:31, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Neptune fac[edit]

while I often make comments on ways to improve an article, I do not generally consider myself competent enough a judge to actually make a vote. Sorry about that. Circeus 11:51, August 2, 2005 (UTC)

BRAVO![edit]

Just wanted to say great job on Colonial period of South Carolina. It's wonderful. Just wanted to let you know I made a link to and from Province of South Carolina and added Category:U.S. colonial history as well as adding South Carolina to your also-excellent History of South Carolina page. Thank you and keep up the wonderful work! jengod 20:29, August 2, 2005 (UTC)

Secret Life of Bees[edit]

I was going to start a talk page for this, but since this is one of your projects, I thought I'd edit this instead.

May Boatwright: The third Boatwright sister, who developed a bipolar disorder around the time her younger sister April died.

Is she really bipolar? I thought she had this thing where she couldn't seperate other people's grief from her own. Bipolar is the thing where you're very happy sometimes and very sad others, isn't it? She does have a mental problem that's similar to depression, but I don't think we can call it bipolar. raylu 17:29, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm not really working on that article anymore. I just read it one day and thought there should be an article on it. I fixed it, though. Toothpaste 17:35, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

FAs, FACs, FARCs and, above all, grace[edit]

Let me begin by saying that I have a great deal of respect for the grace you have shown in accepting the History of South Carolina FARC/FAC debacle. I hope that you will remain committed to producing strong articles. Precisely because you continue to demonstrate consistency with this intent, I would encourage you to consult a wider range of stronger sources before putting articles up for peer review or FAC. I've nothing against using the Internet as a research tool and citing Internet content where possible. I am, however, reluctant to believe that articles on historical subject matter can accept a predominance of non-primary materials from the Internet, particularly where there is not evidence of broad consultation of scholarly secondary literature — there simply isn't that much scholarly writing available for free on the Internet. In both the SC and AZ articles, the only scholarly secondary literature I see referenced is a single general work on the subject, which I do not believe sufficient. I would also recommend making sure that your articles are verifiable by making more extensive efforts to cite sources for specific claims, particularly where they may be controversial (and it is often only by examining a broader range of sources that this becomes clear). I would accordingly urge you to review the follow Wikipedia space articles:

Again, allow me to express my admiration for your gracious and honest conduct under pressure. I have no doubt that you will profit from honest mistakes and misunderstandings and will take from this what is necessary to produce articles whose quality equals your ambition and determination. Buffyg 01:00, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. The latest book the library had available on Arizona was from 1995, and only covers events up to about 1985, so I relied on Internet sources for the latter years. Someone else referenced the other listed reference for the Goldwater/Johnson election and misc. things. I would check out more books, one from 1988 and another from 1977 with a foreward by Barry Goldwater, but unfortunately my library card has expired, but that'll be fixed shortly. Even when I do have that solved, it'll take 5 days for the books to arrive at my nearest library from the main library in Nashville. Thanks for your understanding. Any problems aside from references? Toothpaste 01:08, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As I'd expect further research to render further changes, I'll check back when you've worked through what you've checked out. Somewhere in there ought to be some instructions on how to add notes, which is something of a pain at the moment. I was somewhat surprised that the style used in notes has been a previous basis of objection, which is why I'd recommend you like at the style recommendations now rather than having to revise that later. (Apologies for not providing a URL or wikilink, but I suppose you've seen something to reference for the notes you've already created). Buffyg 01:16, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Added a section on how to add notes on the talk page. Took me an hour or two to figure it out myself. Thanks again. Toothpaste 01:30, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Epic Barnstar[edit]

Epic Barnstar awarded by WP:FAD

Your colleagues in the Featured Article Drive would like to award you this Epic barnstar in recognition of your sheer graft in bringing History of Arizona up to scratch. Congratulations, Toothpaste!

FAC[edit]

Sorry to disappoint you, Toothpaste, but I'll take a look at the article again tom. I was about to log off, and I'm so tired I probably wouldn't do a good job anyways. (yawn) Thanks, though. Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 01:05, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Christian Exodus? Fundamentalist?[edit]

I see you added this to South Carolina History. Does this group self-identify as "fundamentalist?" If not, is it a label applied by a Wikipedia editor? If they do not self-identify, I will remove the label and link, following the Associated Press guidelines, to ensure NPOV. Pollinator 18:55, August 24, 2005 (UTC)

Go ahead and remove it. I had gotten it from Christian Exodus. Sorry for the trouble. Toothpaste 19:03, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

South Carolina history FAC[edit]

I've left my comments on the talk page; I'm sorry, but they're fairly strong. As others have commented, I think the source materials you began with weren't adequate, especially in terms of political history. I'd recommend reading a few books like Hofstadter's "American Political Tradition" to get a better handle on the broad sweep and keep more detailed matters in context. Monicasdude 03:18, 27 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'd rather have a good FAC not make FA status than a bad FAC get FA status. All public libraries in Nashville had only two books on the subject of South Carolina history. Thank you for your help. Toothpaste 03:39, 27 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Good job, congratulations! Don't be too disappointed if it fails due to "newness", though. Did you use any print publications as your main sources? These might merit mention in the "references section", too. Lupo 10:04, September 1, 2005 (UTC)

Yes, two, and they're already listed there. I ordered four books on the history of Alaska to be sent to my nearest library from my city's main library, and when they arrive they'll be added to the list. Thank you. Toothpaste 10:06, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your article is good, but pretty new and you are the only main contributor to it. I've clarified my stance on the objection in User:Redwolf24's talk. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 05:23, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

Awesome job on this article. Thanks for all your hard work! -- Dave C.talk | Esperanza 05:00, 9 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Woohoo! Thanks. If you think it's featured article material, you can always support at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/History of Alaska. Toothpaste 05:02, 9 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your History of Alaska article looks very good. So far I've only read up to the sale of Alaska, and the quality is excellent. I'll finish the rest later. I'd like to point out that the British were in Fort Yukon in the 1840s, but I don't think they were from the HBC, it may have been established by a competing fur company. My meager research attempts haven't been very useful. Please give me a call when you begin the History of Louisiana article. RPellessier | (Talk) 02:25, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Salve! It looks like you're making a good impact in the community already. Thanks so much for working on History of Alaska; I don't believe I've made even a single edit (and I, as you said, live here ^^;) to that article. I will definitely peruse the article and throw my two cents into the FAC discussion. I plan to make more AK-related articles, especially about the Panhandle; I'm working on a few things, but I have a lot of projects that I drift back and forth on. Your dedication has inspired me! 8) Thanks again. Ave atque vale, --Merovingian (t) (c) 07:18, September 3, 2005 (UTC)

You're welcome. Actually, I'm aiming to make all state history articles Featured Articles. History of Arizona became one recently and will probably be on the main page this month. Thanks for your comment in advance. Toothpaste 07:44, 3 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
An admirable project indeed! --Merovingian (t) (c) 07:59, September 3, 2005 (UTC)

I've put a few contributions of my own in the main Alaska article (mostly on transportation) and thought I had pretty much explored the Wikipedian World of Alaskan Articles, but I never ran across this one! I briefly skimmed it, and it looks absolutely great. When I have more than three minutes, though, I'll read it in more detail and post my thoughts on the FAC discussion. So far, you have my support! cluth 21:14, September 3, 2005 (UTC)

PS. THe nomination of HoA is in PR. You'd have to remove it from there. Thanks. =Nichalp «Talk»= 10:41, September 4, 2005 (UTC)

Done. Toothpaste 10:44, 4 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nashville user?[edit]

Just to get an idea of other Wikipedians around Nashville, I'm compiling a small list of users in the area. Are you in or around Nashville? See also Category:Wikipedians in Tennessee. --J. J. 17:37, 2005 September 6 (UTC)

Glad to see you added to the Tennessee category. Thanks for updating. Nice job on the History of Alaska, by the way! --J. J. 19:35, 2005 September 7 (UTC)
You're welcome. I'm doing History of Washington next, though right now much of it is a copy and paste job from the history section of Washington. Toothpaste 22:34, 7 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think you should put a notice on his page that reads, "Ugliest User Page Award". By the way, how is it that you've never heard recorded or live music?? --J. J. 03:30, 2005 September 9 (UTC)

  • Haha. I knew I sensed some sarcasm in your message to me. Now I get it. I suppose you wanted to see if I had a website to see if it sucked as bad as my userpage, eh? Heh, well it wouldn't. 8*) - R Lee E (talk, contribs) 02:43, September 10, 2005 (UTC)

Alaska[edit]

I have made some corrections to the article, and parts needing clarifications are hidden in comment tags. Please take care of those comments. Thanks. =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:07, September 11, 2005 (UTC)

Toothpaste: congrats on the promotion of your article! I'll have another look before it's featured on the front page. Tony 01:10, 12 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I tried to address the queries of everyone who objected before it went off the list. I'm still trying to get Nichalp to replace his object with a support, since he thought it was too long and I narrowed it from 60KB to 38KB. What do you think now? Better or worse, before the article was shortened? Toothpaste 01:22, 12 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please discuss History of Australia changes first[edit]

Hi Toothpaste what you have done to the history of Australia articles is a bit annoying. There has been a large amount of discussion on how to split our history of Australia articles to ensure sustainability (ie, the word count will grow). If you would like a single history article then can you please engage in the discussion about it first. Can you please revert what you've done for now. Much appreciated. Japanese particle articles[edit]

These articles aren't at all appropriate for Wikipedia. They're never going to be more than dictionary definitions. There are already entries for the kana at Wiktionary. --DannyWilde 01:06, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Toothpaste, I was monitoring RC and I noticed your particle articles. I think they are very interesting. However, I have the same fear that DannyWilde has - that they may never be able to grow into full articles. On the other hand, the article for A manages to have plenty of content. What is your feeling on the potential for growth of these articles you are creating? Johntex\talk 01:14, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Did You Know Update[edit]

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Tucson Citizen, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Never heard music?[edit]

All right, I have to ask. What does the first sentence of your user page mean? Are you deaf? By the way, amazing history articles. —Keenan Pepper 05:44, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've never gone out and bought any music, or listened to any music, except in the background of video games, television, radio dramas, malls, stores, et cetera. I just don't bother to listen to it, I said to someone in IRC, and thus, they slapped that on my user page. Thanks for complimenting me on my history articles.

I've retired from writing state history for now, because I'm learning Japanese. I'm hoping to be able to translate between the two Wikipedias. Japanese Wikipedia lacks lots on American culture and animals, like the American bluejay, and we lack lots on them, like the Japanese rhinoceros beetle. Toothpaste 05:52, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

AK - you?[edit]

You live up here? And this is User:SilverSide, I'm just too lazy to log in (-:

Nope, Tennessee. I picked History of Arizona and History of Alaska to write on because I had already been taught Tennessean history, and wanted to learn something as I researched for Wikipedia. Also, Alaska's population is so small, it was less likely that a resident would work on the history of their own state's article. Toothpaste 15:37, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Are you around?[edit]

Hi Toothpaste,

I tried to contact you on IRC after ambi kickbanned you to see if everything was going okay, but you were already gone. Bumm13 13:04, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Since that happened, the firetruck has left, and there is no fire in the hotel. It was all a false alarm. Hope I can get back in #wikipedia soon. I'll be writing Purity Dairies in the meantime. Toothpaste 13:06, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Pink pills[edit]

Nice article on Dr. Williams's Pink Pills. I had a scan of one of their ads in my collection, but had not uploaded it yet, thinking it less interesting graphically. But when I saw your article, it moved me to send it. -- Smerdis of Tlön 05:49, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
