Image copyrights[edit]

You have a misunderstanding about image authorship. I just changed the licensing of the three Ballarat Star uploads you made to the Wikipedia Commons. Because you uploaded the images or scanned a portion of the newspaper to upload them does not make you the creator or author or source of the image. The author of the image is the Ballarat Star Newspaper (or some artist they commissioned over 100 years ago). The source of these uploads is also not you, it's the Ballarat Newpaper. To put it in perspective, if you upload detail from a Vincent Van Gogh painting, you do not become the author, Vincent Van Gogh remains its author. I have tagged all three images as in the public domain using the Commons Template {{PD-Australia}} given their age, rather than what you licensed them as, as "self". Regarding the two local uploads that you asked me about on my talk page, two things: Why did you upload them here, rather than on the Commons as with the prior images? Who is Jennifer Burrell? If that's you, then you're making the same error of thinking the author is the uploader. These both look like they belong on the Commons, marked as PD-Australia, and having the source and author be the Ballarat Star newspaper.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:55, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
