Providence/Worcester

Hi, I noticed you reverted my change and noticed other trends in your editing. I've got some old docs (track charts) with information add, but given your patterns of removing added information, I refuse to add it to Wikipedia. I'm not going work in vain. I put lots of effort into improving the article with far more prose and referencing than existed previously, I honestly don't understand what you're upset about. I'm more than happy to collaborate with other editors, but if you have some chip on your shoulder and don't want to help, that's entirely your choice, we are all volunteers. Again, I'm not even sure what exactly you're upset about, but you're not helping anything by posting vague complaints on my talk page. If you have an issue with a specific edit I made, I'm happy to discuss it, but if you're just here to complain, you're wasting both your and my time. You showed up at my talk page and immediately assumed bad faith on my part. Believe it or not, I don't go around reverting people all day for fun, and I don't make any claims of owning articles or demanding edits meet my approval. My goal is to improve the encyclopedia, and if someone changes my edits to make them better, that's fine by me. You are more than welcome to add more information to the P&W article, but considering you've been an editor for over a decade, you should know by now that anyone's edits may be rewritten or reverted by other editors. That's just how Wikipedia is, and it's happened to me plenty of times. Your edit added a stock ticker link that didn't work, and I did not see the point of including a broken link which would confuse readers, so I reverted it. Again, your edits were a complete violation of WP:NPOV which is a core Wikipedia policy. That something is "true" is not by itself sufficient reason to include it. Gulf of Maine

@Esszet: Nova Scotia only says that because you also inserted the same material into that article on November 10th (and improperly marked the edit as minor, as you did on Massachusetts). To quote for you from Help:Minor edit: "Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if the edit concerns a single word, and it is improper to mark such an edit as minor." You should not be marking such edits as minor. The Gulf of Mexico is a significantly more well known and larger body than the Gulf of Maine, hence why neither Maine, New Hampshire, or Massachusetts had such language until you inserted it into all three articles this past week. Sorry, I forgot about that, and no, I inserted it into New Hampshire 2 1/2 weeks ago. It may not be especially well-known, but it's 3 1/2 times bigger than the state of Massachusetts itself, so it should be included in the lede. Esszet (talk) 00:26, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
@Esszet: I mentioned this on the IP's talk page as well, but I'm not happy you immediately accused me of LOUTsocking. Once again, I live in Connecticut, while this IP is in India. And I never LOUTsock, as a matter of principle. Please retract your false allegation.
Regarding the content dispute, I'm again not interested in litigating it further. You reverted me, and honestly it's not a huge deal. If other editors object to it, that's their business, but I have made no edits to the page since you reverted me with an edit summary, and will not make any other edits regarding the Gulf of Maine name. @Smallbones: Sorry for the delayed reply, I've been discussing on Discord with some Team-B-Vital participants about how to proceed with the article. I've gotten a general consensus from participants that they'd be ok with an article, so I will begin drafting one up today, I should have it ready by the 17th at the latest. As I've never written anything for the Signpost before, is there anything in particular I should keep in mind while writing, or any pages you could point me to for pointers? Thanks.   • Most of it is straightforward. Say 500 -1500 words. If you want a specific number, 903 is as good as any. The Wikipedia rules are: it's just like a talk page - no BLP violations, no personal attacks, but WP:OR doesn't apply (it's expected most of the time!). We will edit it, but the final write-up is your decision (the publishing decision, along with the headline and blurb is the editor's choice, but I've only seen one story where the author and editor couldn't agree).
  • As far as style - it's up to you, but here are some pointers. You don't need citations - in fact these used to be discouraged. Anything really controversial though I'll recommend in line external links. *Be able to* document quotes (i.e. by e-mails). It's not a Wikipedia mainspace article - just relax and tell your story. Using a couple of medium-short examples here might work well, or 4-5 shorter examples. It should have a bit of structure (e.g. use an outline), but don't be too formal about it. Somehow, I usual outline it when I'm almost done - then sometimes I move a sentence or 2 (but everybody is different). The hardest part for me is writing the lede (first sentence or 2) - which I'll start with and maybe change a couple of times as the story progresses (it keeps the focus on the same topic) Make the lede grab the reader and guide him right down the track of the whole article. Quotes from other editors are encouraged - sometimes even very long ones. Some editors just like to write about their own feelings - which is usually a mistake. The story is usually not about you. If it is an opinion piece - you need a whole lot of facts to back up those opinions! Other than the lede, the only other spot that sometimes needs special work is the conclusion. It doesn't need to be labeled, sometimes it just glides down to a smooth landing when you've finished what you want to say. Sometimes though the subject is complicated enough that you have to recap, summarize, and formally conclude. It depends on the story.
  • Sorry if I'm rambling, but the point is that it's up to you. The editor is there to help you do it your way. Relax and work on the lede every once in a while. Smallbones(smalltalk) 04:39, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

RFA 2021 Completed

The 2021 re-examination of RFA has been completed. 23 (plus 2 variants) ideas were proposed. Over 200 editors participated in this final phase. Three changes gained consensus and two proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration. Thanks to all who helped to close the discussion, and in particular Primefac, Lee Vilenski, and Ymblanter for closing the most difficult conversations and for TonyBallioni for closing the review of one of the closes.

The following proposals gained consensus and have all been implemented:

  1. Revision of standard question 1 to Why are you interested in becoming an administrator? Special thanks to xaosflux for help with implementation.
  2. A new process, Administrative Action Review (XRV) designed to review if an editor's specific use of an advanced permission, including the admin tools, is consistent with policy in a process similar to that of deletion review and move review. Thanks to all the editors who contributed (and are continuing to contribute) to the discussion of how to implement this proposal.
  3. Removal of autopatrol from the administrator's toolkit. Special thanks to Wugapodes and Seddon for their help with implementation.

The following proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration:

  1. An option for people to run for temporary adminship (proposal, discussion, & close)
  2. An optional election process (proposal & discussion and close review & re-close)

Editors who wish to discuss these ideas or other ideas on how to try to address any of the six issues identified during phase 1 for which no proposal gained are encouraged to do so at RFA's talk page or an appropriate village pump.

A final and huge thanks all those who participated in this effort to improve our RFA process over the last 4 months.

I hope the New Year brings you nothing but the best. I wanted to thank you for teaching me something I was not aware of prior. These days I mainly do recent changes patrolling; occasionally there are reports to AIV that administrators use the canned reply that ANI would be a better referral. When I has an issue with you, that I could not resolve, I brought it there. I had no idea what a toxic experience that was. It is my greatest regret to date here; there were a plethora of other avenues that I know now would have been less confrontational and dramatic. I am sorry for initiating that. I just want to tell you that you seem like a very mature person for what you do to these pages, and I actually like that. I don’t want to be one of those people who think what you do is questionable or bad. In fact, if you want to improve the pages I’ve written over the months, I wouldn’t mind at all. If it wasn’t for you, I would’ve never realized that railpictures.net doesn’t qualify as a good Wikipedia source, nor would I have known that you have to ask permission or create a talk page before you redirect an article. @I'ma editor2022: Hi, thanks for the message. The reason I marked your review with a red x is that according to the rules of the backlog drive, reviews must be of a minimum length to get credit. As your review did not meet that requirement (basically meant to ensure reviews are thorough, because it's extremely rare a good article nominee needs zero changes to achieve GA status), you will not receive credit for it towards the drive. That doesn't mean your review is invalid, it just means you won't have it counted for the purposes of the competition. There's more information about this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Good articles/GAN Backlog Drives/January 2022#Review length, I recommend giving that discussion a read, myself and some of the other coords discussed this.
By design, the GAN review process is somewhat subjective; you are given a fair amount of latitude to review the article compared to the GA criteria and make suggestions and recommendations which you believe will help the article meet those criteria. No article is ever perfect, so when experienced editors see a review with no suggestions at all, that jumps out as meaning the review was likely not as thorough as it could have been. There are several hundred GA reviews you can look at on the drive page to get an idea of what experienced reviewers look for. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 17:26, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
Ok, thank you for the suggestions, I actually read that rule before, but I forgot about it. Do you have any suggestions for tools to measure a review's length? At a glance there seems to not be any default tools on the left side on the page, labelled "Tools", to see the character size. Or did you mean byte size in the discussion that you linked?
P.S Could you do a quick glance at the article,History of Palm Beach County, Florida, for any possible problems that I looked over for me? Like I stated before, this was only my second review, and in my first review my mentor showed me some problems that I overlooked.

@I'ma editor2022: Hi again! I agree with what Trainsandotherthings has said above; it is very rare for an article to be so perfect that it'll need no comments on prose. On a quick glance, I see some issues, which while are not reasons for failing it, but certainly worth asking. Like why is 'Historical Society of Palm Beach County' overused in references. Not saying that it is not reliable, but using it 77 of the 185 citations is lot. Inconsistency in "63 miles (101 kilometres)" v. "100 mph (155 km/h)"—both units in full form v. both in abbreviation, etc. Though the final decision to pass/fail a GAN should be made on basis of the criteria and very limited MOS guidelines, there is not harm in asking/suggesting any thing or issue you face while reviewing. I happened to see your comment in another talk section (regarding Matt Chamberlain) and was intrigued by your name. For this reason: One of my "crowning achievements" here at Wikipedia is the List of train songs, and based on your handle, I thought you might enjoy 800+ songs about trains and the folks who did them. It's not my only foray in these parts, I'm actually prouder of Timeline of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, but it sure did take a lot of time to look all this stuff up. @Allreet: Thanks for the message! I actually linked to List of train songs as part of my effort to rewrite Train, I was happy to see such an article existed. I took a closer look just now, and WOW, over 800 references! That's very impressive work and you should definitely be proud of it (and Timeline of the Lewis and Clark Expedition). I haven't really edited in the area much, but one of the "other things" I'm interested in is alternative rock; Garbage is one of my favorite bands. One day I plan to get that article to GA. I appended "and other things" to my name because I didn't want to come across as a single-purpose account. I love trains, but there are also other areas I am interested in. WikiCup 2022 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
  • Christmas Island AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
  • Philadelphia GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
  • SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
  • United Nations Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.

These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.
