WikiCup 2010 February newsletter

Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. GA Sweeps Completed!

Thanks to everyone's amazing efforts in February, we have reviewed all of the articles and are now finished with Sweeps! There are still about 30 articles currently on hold, and once those reviews are completed, I will send you a final message about Sweeps process stats including the total number of articles that were passed and failed. If you have one of these open reviews, be sure to update your count when the review is completed so I can compile the stats. You can except to receive your award for reviewing within the next week or two. Although the majority of the editors did not start Sweeps at the beginning in August 2007 (myself included), over 50 editors have all come together to complete a monumental task and improve many articles in the process. I commend you for sticking with this often challenging task and strengthening the integrity of the GA WikiProject as well as the GAs themselves. I invite you to take a break from reviewing (don't want you to burn out!) and then consider returning/starting to review GANs and/or contribute to GAR reviews. With your assistance, we can help bring the backlog down to a manageable level and help inspire more editors to improve articles to higher classes and consider reviewing themselves. While I thank you for the notice, getting involved in the GAN review for an article that I have been totally uninvolved in is not something I usually do. Imagine if I suddenly asked you to get involved in my Tai Streets GAN. I did make one comment on the review, however. When I was doing WP 10-12 hours a day that would have been a great offer. Now I try to find a couple hours a day and he is low on my priority list. After cleaning up the current GANs for the 2009 season and Tai Streets, I hope to get to Juwan Howard and Jason Avant. Joe Cada update

Hey Tony. Since you did the GA for Joe Cada, I thought perhaps you might want to update his article with how he did in the 2010 National Heads-Up Poker Championship. There are sources for it here and here, but undoubtedly others are out there as well. I've added the info to the Darvin Moon page, which was my GA. FYI, I'm now (as to the Scheyer page) not troubled by the blank space to the right of the rookie infobox, as the other infobox descends low enough now to fill it up. basketball infoboxes

Query -- since you are doing such a great job on the college basketball infoboxes. Do you think the Scheyer one should properly reflect the level of awards and nominations for awards that are reflected in the Collins infobox (which includes a bunch of the high school awards and college award nominations not mentioned in the scheyer infobox)? Amazingly, I believe I've discovered on my own how to get rid of the extra line in the bball infoboxes below titles such as "championships", etc. The problem seems to be that the extra line results from the insertion of either a "–" or a "<br />". Try, instead, inserting a "<nowiki></nowiki>", and it closes up, deleting an extraneous line.--Epeefleche (talk) 20:08, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Suggestion though -- I work more on baseball articles. There the convention, which I believe works well, is --where there are multiple championships or awards-- to have it read something like this: 3x blahblahblah champion (YYYY, YYYY-YY).--Epeefleche (talk) 04:09, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
Hmmm. The only change in the above, if you wish to give each championship a link, is that you would want to know use the YYYY-YY construct, but instead have that parenthetical read something like (YYYY, YYYY, and YYYY). For college ballplayers, I don't expect that would be a problem. For pro ballplayers in any sport, that could get a little messy I guess (as in listing a different year for each year Barry Bonds had each award). But again, I don't see it as an issue for college ballplayers, and would address your concern.--Epeefleche (talk) 04:16, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
Also, personally I've taken the approach that there's no need to indicate that a ballplayer is on the Top 50 Preseason, Top 30 Midseason, Final 26 Ballot, and won the award (if that happens). As to tournaments, I wonder (assuming we just indicate the year and tourney), if the best approach might not be "3x NCAA (YYYY, YYYY, and YYYY)". Where each year is in-lined to the specific tourney. I guess I personally don't feel a need to indicate seed and how far they've gone, but it might work -- I guess I would defer to your judgment. Of the two, it may be that finish is more important than seeding, if one had to choose.--Epeefleche (talk) 04:41, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

McCormick Tribune Plaza

There are still a few things I think can be done better. I've mentioned them at the FAC, but I'll restate them here, and try to give some clearer instructions:

  • The description of the Earth From Above photos still seems only superficially paraphrased. I know that you changed some words here and there, but at least one long phrase is completely intact ("the 1999 earthquake in Turkey and the destruction of the Amazonian rain forest"). That could conceivably be reworded. At least shuffle things around, and replace "Amazonian rainforest" with "Amazon rainforest" (the more common name). Other details in that section should at least be reordered so that it doesn't look like you're simply copying the sentence structures of the source. Basically, uou need to make sure that everything is paraphrased as much as possible. (And there may be other sections of the article that need further paraphrasing, but I haven't checked everything.)
  • It still seems a bit weird to me that so much space is dedicated to Earth From Above. Yeah, it was an important exhibit, but I still think many of those details would be better off in an article about the exhibit itself. They just seem like an unnecessary digression here. (However, I'll concede that this is a matter of opinion, and I won't oppose on this point alone.)
  • This ref still bothers me. It's an important ref, since you're using it to establish international importance, but it seems like there should be more to the ref than there is. The first sentence doesn't even say that the park is in Chicago, and the mayor isn't mentioned by name anywhere. I'm wondering if this is just an excerpt from a larger article, which only mentions the ice rink as a minor supporting detail. Perhaps it's from an article on global warming, or something like that. (And if the ice rink is not the primary subject of the article, it doesn't seem fair to use the ref to talk about international media attention.) Zagalejo^^^ 20:36, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Origins of house music in chicago.

I was there. I lived it. And if i put forth the effort i probably can contact a large portion of my fellow classmates.

Why classmates? Because house music started with the classes of 79-80-81. It involved a small group of oh 10-20 students from the "Better" High schools in Chicago. The newly formed Hyde Park Carrer Acadamy, Kenwood Acadamy, Julian, St Ignatious Prep (St. Iggy)and others, Honor students, college preps, Very intellegent kids with a LOT of time on our hands... It was not a gay movement.. It was teenage angst. We were rebelling against everything. The world was moving into the "George Orwell years". Remember all the books that prophicied about the future and such? That was our national anthem,, Its why Prince wrote the song 1999. We chanted that the world was going to end from 1979 through 1984?. Though we were not nilhist... It was just an excuse to party.

We were not trying to be classified as gay, but to be unidentifiable to anyone other than ourselves. (Though gay and bi-sexual individual were involved). We strived to seperate from the norm by becoming androgenous, and at the same time adopting and combining punk, new wave and preppy as our 'look' both male and female, gay, straight or bi-sexual, we all dressed the same. I rememebr our parents calling us "The Lost Generation" OOooOoO! (this is where the confusion as to it being a gay movement started. But more on that later) At first identifying ourselves as new wave preps, well for a while (LOL).

The name House or house music did not get started because of The Warehouse. It was much simpler. It, "House" literally was as simple as a renaming of basement parties, i.e. house parties. As these parties became more popular, or known, the core group moved. From basments to the parks, McDonalds on lower south Michigan, or White castles on 79th Stoney Island (All by word of mouth). Anyplace we could find to play music and gather (Because we were too young to go to clubs). Someone in our group struck upon the great idea to pool our moneies together and rent a place to be our own. We rented a loft apartment on 14th and michigan. Directly across the street from a fire house, which is a resturant today. A two story loft apartment. This was the Chicago loft, which we called simply "The Loft". This was the true birthplace of Chicago House.

Starting fridays throughout the weekend we held fashion shows, hosted parties, hired DJ's, some who went on to become very famous! (You can probably geuss their names.) The world was our apple, our playground. Dancing was called 'punking out' and grew to 'jacking your body, to 'new wave jack'. A person could dance by themselves, against pole, the wall, cars in the lot, or on the streets, or with two three or any number of people. All you needed was the music.

(Straight people danced with either straight or bisexual of the opposite sex. Bisexuals dance with gay, bisexual or straight. And gay danced with gay, bisexual or even straight. Just for the fun or sometimes just to stir up confusion. (remember it was about not being classified) or any combination of individuals). We didnt care what you were.. Just as long as you were a part of us, and not them.

The parties became popular, again. And the Core group moved, again. We rented places like the South Shore country club, a room in the Gucci building on michigan. But the crowd would eventually find out and follow. Thjis is how we ended up at The WareHouse. A place to dance, in an empty building, in the warehoue district in Chicago. Pulease a perfect match. The congruence of the term already in use "House" and The Warehouse, was just a MAJOR coincidence. Or fate. LOL! Because by the time it hit the warehouse it had spread beyond our abilty to keep it to ourselves.


Once the Class of 80 graduated and moved off to the various colleges, the class of 81 decided to out do the class of 80. As did 82 towards the class of 81. This is why it continued to grow and not die out. It was an extention of the Jr vs Sr rivalry, and a generation trying to define itself. And it was fun. Each school year trying to outdo each other in parties and antics. Former classmates would still return to the parties as would those who were out of state(during spring and summer breaks). This is how Chicago House parties and music was spread throughout the USA. Around 82-83 i personally left the scene, and moved on. Hey the world didnt end!

But boy was it a ride.

I dont know how to make this unbiased as i lived it. I can name places, people, events.. Its not just "The history of" Its my life, my past.

  • I can attest to the truth of this. "House music" was played at "house parties". The subculture was not gay, it was rooted in the "fashion plate" or "Bourgie Black" high schools and neighborhoods of Chicago. Is there some debate about this? Speciate (talk) 17:26, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

meetup or other WP Chicago session April 30 2010?

I'd like to host a meetup Friday April 30 as part of an annual conference called eChicago, or invite you and others who have contributed to the Chicago content on Wikipedia to talk as a panel, or be convenors, whatever you like. eChicago attracts about 200 people and a number of them are interested in Wikipedia -- current and future librarians, students, community based IT people, city people. I'd make it a session in the conference, ideally just before the friday night dinner nearby. How could we get word out? A student of mine posted to

Princeton Tigers men's basketball redlinks

Good job in getting that article underway. Hard to believe a great historic basketball program like Princeton didn't already have an article. I'm still working away at Michigan football players of the past and All-American college football players. Millenium Park FT and Park Grill

WP:WIAFT is revised periodically, but usually to make it more stringent. Over time the required percentage of Featured Articles increases. The objective of topics is to encourage comprehensive coverage of topics. Although sometimes it may discourage new articles more often it works out like this case where people encourage each other to further develop new articles to make the topics even more complete than they were before.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 19:58, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
The outcome could have been the opposite. Schwa and Park Grill both got sent to AFD! April 2010 GAN backlog elimination drive

WikiProject Good Articles will be running a GAN backlog elimination drive for the entire month of April. The goal of this drive is to bring the number of outstanding Good Article nominations down to below 200. This will help editors in restoring confidence to the GAN process as well as actively improving, polishing, and rewarding good content. If you are interested in participating in the drive, please place your name here. Awards will be given out to those who review certain numbers of GANs as well as to those who review the most. Thanks for adding to the Gar Heard article. But, read this sentence:

"The deal was part of the resume that earned Donavan the NBA Executive of the Year Award."

You must assume that the reader does not know who Donavan is, or what he does, or what he has to do with Mr. Heard. Billy Donavan the coach for the Florida Gators? WikiCup 2010 March newsletter

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Several WikiCup contestants and judges have already signed up, but regular reviewers and those who hope to do more reviewing are more than welcome to join at the drive page.
