Happy New Year, TonyTheTiger!

Send New Year cheer by adding {{subst:Happy New Year fireworks}} to user talk pages.

Opening this thread feels like intimidation to me, with a pile-on. When I feel bullied or intimidated I don't edit, but that doesn't add to the project. In the future would you consider discussing with me first? I made a mistake, have apologized and clearly don't think the template needs to be deleted. Also seeing this comment was a surprise. It would have been better to ping me so I knew about it instead of having it pop up on my watchlist as it did. Typically when one editor consider him or herself in dispute with another, some sort of communication between the two parties is best rather than an escalation. Until things slow down, I'll stay away, but I wish none of these things had been said. Victoriaearle (tk) 19:53, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Tony, the acne vulgaris article is currently undergoing FAC and some reviewers are concerned that the prior reviews (including copyediting) were of insufficient quality. Would you be willing to give the article a once over and see if you find issues that need to be addressed? I would be very grateful. The current FAC (if you care to comment) can be found here [1]. Thank you! TylerDurden8823 (talk) 05:57, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Should I take that as a no? TylerDurden8823 (talk) 18:04, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Johnson Family Enterprises

The article Johnson Family Enterprises has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I can find no indication that this parent company actually exists - only its supposed "subsidiaries".

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Tense

Hi Tony, I'm engaged in a discussion with a user about proper tense for an article lead. The context is: whether or not we would refer to a concert tour in the past or present tense, specifically related to this change. The editor has made some widely unreleated arguments, like that concert tours should be written about the way we write about fiction, that "the music industry has a lot less to do about music than it did [during Woodstock]" and so forth. Anyway, the editor has cited an article you wrote, Romeo and Juliet (2013 Broadway play) as an example of using present tense to describe an event in the past. Soooo, I'm hoping you have a minute or two to give me a quick education on why we'd use present-tense "is" for something that took place in 2013. Is this by community consensus? Might you have any idea where the discussions took place? I know that sometimes we do this, like for TV articles (WP:TVLEAD) where after multiple discussions it was decided that TV shows still exist in some format, but it's not as intuitive for me in the context of a Broadway play, and less so for a concert tour. Also, assuming that Broadway productions and musical tours are different beasts prone to different community guidelines, do you have any thoughts on whether "is" or "was" is correct for the Beyonce tour? If you wouldn't mind hitting my head with a monkey wrench a little bit, I'd be appreciative. Many thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:50, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Cyphoidbomb, MOS:TENSE is a guide.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 14:39, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I guess I'm more confused how a Broadway production and a concert tour would not qualify as past events, which are one of the exceptions for writing in the present tense. Thoughts? Thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk)
Broadway productions can be long-running. Even tours can go for quite a while.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 01:49, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
Right, but when they are over, aren't they then a "past event"? Please know that I didn't come here to criticize your decision, I was just trying to get edification, and I figured that you'd have a clear reason. Anyhow, I'll seek my answer elsewhere. Thanks. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 03:32, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
Cyphoidbomb, why don't you go straight to the MOS talk page.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:53, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi. I'm curious as to why you reverted the edit of 200.114.251.177 back on August 4. The edit changed the holder to be Will Grier instead of Max Browne, which to me appears to be correct. Am I missing something? Thanks. Jb45424 (talk) 01:50, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

RfC on templates

Hello....sorry late to the conversation....had no clue it was happening. Think you should propose wording to include siste or iinterwiki links in the guide.....as most will not see the change back to the old version changing anything abut externs links.....most will still see the guide as saying "for internal use only". I have no problem with the bold revert but am afraid the out come of meaning your looking for is not there even after the new change back to the old version. --Moxy (talk) 00:11, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello TonyTheTiger,

Is there any more ways that this article can improve? I ask you this because you were the GA reviewer who speedy declined the GA nomination. It seems since 2013, the plot section has gotten bigger. I have improve some things in my part, like finding archive links for the references that were dead, and other stuff. I would like to have your opinion. Thanks. -- 1989 (talk) 02:33, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) 1989, just a quick look through shows a number of uncited paragraphs in the body of the article, and still more where the paragraphs don't end with an inline source citations, despite significant information in the final sentence(s). Before you nominate this to be a GA, you'll want to find sources to back up these sentences and paragraphs, and also to address any "citation needed" templates. Best of luck! BlueMoonset (talk) 17:10, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

Is there any reason to keep this page? You haven't touched in since 2009, and as far as I can tell, you probably never will. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 07:48, 22 January 2017 (UTC)

Stop icon

Your recent editing history at Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and navigation templates shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. A tag has been placed on Template:Cormoran Strike requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is an unused duplicate of another template, or a hard-coded instance of another template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is not actually the same as the other template noted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page explaining how this one is different so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{substituted}}</noinclude>).

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page's talk page, where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. What is going on?--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 20:37, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

@TonyTheTiger: Some of your JavaScript is failing in article space, maybe due to an error in code which is only activated in article space and prevents the following code from running. What is your skin? Are the dates to dmy tools missing at both https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example?useskin=vector and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example?useskin=monobook. What is your tools menu in userspace when you view User:TonyTheTiger/common.js? Is "Permanent link" really missing on this page but present in articles? It should always be present in read mode and always be missing in edit mode so did you list your article tools in read mode and the tools here in edit mode? PrimeHunter (talk) 11:43, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
PrimeHunter, How do I know what my skin is? Yes the dmy tools are missing on both of those pages. In userspace my tools menu is

Those were both read modes. Yes Permanent links is really missing here.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 18:42, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

@TonyTheTiger: Your skin is at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering, probably Vector or MonoBook. Do you see "Permanent link" here if you log out? PrimeHunter (talk) 18:51, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
PrimeHunter Vector. If I log out, my only tools are:

@TonyTheTiger: That sounds like the logut screen or another special page. I mean what you see on articles when you are logged out. Do you have the dates to dmy on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example?useskin=modern or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example?useskin=cologneblue? And what is your browser? • When I am logged out, I see the following tools in article space in Google Chrome:

I have logged in to article space in 4 of the 7 browsers that I have installed on my computer. The four that I use the most ( Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Edge) have the same set of links but in 4 different orderings. I could check Netscape, Opera and Safari if you need further info. DYK for Damen station (CTA Green Line)

On 25 February 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Damen station (CTA Green Line), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that when completed, the proposed Damen station will be the third new Chicago "L" station of Rahm Emanuel's tenure as Mayor of Chicago? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Damen station (CTA Green Line). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Damen station (CTA Green Line)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

March 2017 WikiCup newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
  • European Union Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
  • Japan 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.

The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.

So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Would you kindly help?

Hi TonyTheTiger

I am enjoying surfing through your Wikipedia and personal life efforts. It's nice to read things by a person who just likes to write. ;-)

I have been drafting a Chicago biography-related article. There are conflict of interest issues since I revere and am related to the subject of the article.

Here is a link to the draft:

User:Theoa/George_Armour

Here is a link to my working biography:

User:Theoa/bibliography_for_George_Armour_article

Generally there are probably enough references and images, but the text needs more work.

Would you kindly recommend and/or introduce me to a Chicago Project Wikipedian who might be interested in publishing this draft as a full article in mainspace?

Alternatively, if there an already established procedure in the Chicago Project, then can you point me in the best direction to progress the draft to the next stage.

‎Interwiki language links in navboxes

I see you've started adding these to navboxes again. This goes against the spirit of the close, which explicitly states "No Consensus" generally defaults to the pre-disupute situation, The software treats interwiki links to be "external links", and the community clearly considers cross-wiki links as requiring special consideration as "external" and The burden is upon those who deviate from a guideline to demonstrate a reasonable basis for expecting general support for that deviation. I've popped something on Alsee's talk page for clarification. --Rob Sinden (talk) 09:09, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi Rob Sinden. Let's centralize this discussion at WT:WikiProject_Templates#Interpretation_of_Template:Interlanguage_link_usage_RFC, where Tony and I were already discussing this. Alsee (talk) 02:01, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

DYK for Bryant McIntosh

On 18 March 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Bryant McIntosh, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Bryant McIntosh (pictured) holds the single-season and career assist records for Northwestern Wildcats men's basketball? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Bryant McIntosh. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Bryant McIntosh), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Response not recieved

Alsee, you have been pretty inactive for the last 2.5 days and the talk was capped at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Templates#Interpretation_of_Template:Interlanguage_link_usage_RFC before you had a chance to respond. You noted that you would be willing to "tell people not to mess with pre-2017 NAV ILLs for a while", but seem to prefer a three month period to a one year period. Your last post expressed a lack of understanding of how a test could benefit us by providing information that was not previously available. If you spend some time examining the post-merger {{ILL}} breakages, you will probably understand my point, but we can discuss it if you don't. Anyways, if you remain willing to see what happens for 3 months or so, we might as well do it when it would actually matter. I'd accept a three month time period from late November to the end of February for the 9 template sample.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:45, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

I was trying to be as respectful as possible to both sides of a dead-even split, but as Primefac summarized, the discussion wasn't really going anywhere productive. Everyone is discouraged from making pointy additions or removals of ILLs. Just let the issue take a nap for a while. We can see which way the community wants to go when it's time for another discussion. Alsee (talk) 11:05, 25 March 2017 (UTC)
Alsee, yes the discussion with The Banner, who was putting words in my mouth certainly was not going anywhere productive, given that he was ignoring what I was saying and saying I said other things (I.e., saying I was in support of any and all templates that use {{ILL}}, after I said those with fewer than 3 or 4 Eng WP bluelinks should be deleted). However, the discussion with you was going somewhere productive, and I was hoping to resume that here. Can you tell me if you understand how long ILL was broken for. I am not sure myself.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:56, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
I didn't look closely at the details of the ILL merge. The issue is whether we want those links in the nav box at all. If you can find productive discussion with the other side, great. But aside from that, the result is 'please just let the issue slide until a new RFC'. Alsee (talk) 14:43, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

Chicago Meetup

Just wanted to say a quick "hello". It was nice to meet you last Saturday. After being on Wikipedia since 2008, this was my first time attending an in-person event.

Best regards,

Don't quite understand

Could I please ask for a little more explanation on the removed PROD at Campus of Northwestern University. I have never been involved in a PROD before, and only one AfD, so I'm not quite clear on the difference between them. You wrote that "WP:PROD is to delete articles that should not exist". I thought that an article that is incomplete (has empty sections) and just mirrors content from other pages was a good candidate for 'should not exist'. Clearly I'm not getting it. (Please note: I'm happy to take this article to AfD instead, I just want to understand). Leschnei (talk) 12:02, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

  • Leschnei, we do not delete bad articles that cover encyclopedic topics that should be in WP. We delete articles about topics that should not be in an encyclopedia (regardless of quality).--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:44, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
So, PROD is for topics that shouldn't be in an encyclopedia regardless of the quality of the article, and AfD is for topics that are being considered for deletion for other reasons? Leschnei (talk) 23:48, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
Leschnei, any manner of deleting an article on WP is because it does not belong in the encyclopedia and not because it is not a good article. speedy deletion, PROD and AFD are all for deleting articles that should not be in the encyclopedia. None of them are for deleting poorly crafted articles. If it doesn't meet a speedy criterion, then think about PROD or AFD. If it is contested or likely to be contested, you should nominate the article at AFD.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 05:08, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
OK, thanks for your help. Leschnei (talk) 13:26, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

Michigan Basketball Players

Hi TonyTheTiger,

I'm doing some research on the Wikipedia pages of NBA players and have noticed your edits on Michigan players like Burke, Stauskas, Hardaway, LaVert and Glenn Robinson III.

These pages all rank among the top 30 or so longest pages for active NBA players. Other pages you've made edits to - like Parker and Okafor - are in the top 15. I've got to commend you on the level of detail and research that has gone into those pages!

I wanted to ask your motivation for going so in depth on these players. I see that you attended Michigan, but wondered if you had a special connection to the basketball team outside of being a fan.

Looking at your biography it's clear that you're a well-studied man with a wealth of talent and energy. Why choose to edit and originate Wikipedia pages? Are there other sports or areas of great interest for you?

I have to thank you for the work that you've done on WIkipedia. It's users like you that make reading and learning so accessible.

Please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]. I'm happy to share my research with you on page length if you're interested.

Best,

Chris — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:140:8206:4280:B08F:BBA3:90A9:323D (talk) 03:15, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

  • 2601:140:8206:4280:B08F:BBA3:90A9:323D, I have been a college basketball fan since college and have loved basketball in general since my early elementary school days. I was a cheerleader for a while in college and mostly did basketball games (holding the women up in the air). I also won the March Madness bracket pool for my Eating club at Princeton University and for the department I consulted for during my first year on Wall Street. As a former cheerleader and Michigan alum, I like to show my school spirit in all kinds of ways. I am a Chicagoan and if you are a local All-American, I will do my best to create a page for you as soon as I know about you.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:58, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
