Bush's approval ratings

Hi,

Could you update the graph about Bush's approval ratings? I'm curious to see the results for February 2007.

Where do you get that info from, by the way?

Thanks!—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Frediesta (talkcontribs) 02:10, 10 March 2007 (UTC).

Images for deletion

Hi,

I've listed Image:Potter wasp.jpg, which you uploaded, at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion because it appears to be a noncommercial-use image and is now orphaned. —Celithemis 01:09, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Why was an offical public domain image of Patrick Fitzgerald tagged for speedy deletion? I removed speedy deletion of it since it's PD-USGov-DOJ -- I hope I did that correctly... Jebba 04:47, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Possible admin assistance?

Hi Tom, I noticed what some of your edits and your other fantastic work as an admin and I was wondering if you could look over a checkuser case that has been closed. you can find it here. I also noticed that the accounts are still being used... as recent as yesterday even the main account has started to be used again, while the IP accounts are still in use. So I was wondering if you could take some action against the accounts. I'm really not sure what you can do to the IPs... but thanks for any assistance. MrMacMan 03:59, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

About FA un-semi-protection

There are cases were semi-protection of the featured article is warranted; e.g. a lot of vandalism, with which George Washington (inventor) article is currently being hit. However, many people are watching the page for all edits (including me), so it should be fine. GracenotesT § 02:42, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi!

does university of maryland have a good medical school?

Images w/ tags related

These pictures were taken from the appropriate websites, and were there, but many of those images have been taken off because they were replaced with the growing amount of pics on those sites.

I would appreciate the advise. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dhwani1989 (talkcontribs) 16:29, April 8, 2007 (UTC)

Unspecified source for Image:LloydBentsen.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:LloydBentsen.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:06, 10 April 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Abu badali (talk) 19:06, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

A Smile from a Friend

Trent Lott photos

If the user who uploaded them is a prolific copyright violator, that should probably be noted in the message you put on the image. If you just tag them as "no source" when there IS a source and give NO other information, people will be liable to think that you simply don't want to do your homework and check the website. --Dante Alighieri | Talk 05:36, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Image:Orange shooting blonde.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Orange shooting blonde.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. 150.140.208.210 14:42, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Your Reasoning

I recently edited the profile for UMCP and for some reason you felt the need to erase the info and return it to its previous, bland and uninformative status. So before I re-edited the profile, I wanted to ask you why you felt the need to erase the changes considering it provided more insight into how wonderful Maryland is as well as a few statistics that for whatever reason, weren't on the profile.

My Images

Hi Tom. Thanks for your warning. I am in the process of giving different image tags to my copyrighted images, but I'm still a little sketchy on which tags to use. I was given the right by the authors of every AP photo that I downloaded to use them only on Wikipedia. The problem is, I don't know which tag says that, or which tag to use. Could you help me out? I totally understand that uploading PD and fair use images is better, but I looked everwhere on the internet for the photos that I wanted, and the AP was the only site that had them, so I bought the pics, and now I'm uploading them to here. Again, if you have any knowledge that could help me, please get back to me, and I'll gladly retag the images. Best, Happyme22 02:21, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Chandra image

I updated the tags (fair use promo, smithsonian, removed "no info" tag...) and plopped the actual Chandra media license off their website in as well. I also contacted them via their website asking for a waiver for us to use the image without the NonCommercial restrictions, to remove complications for WP mirrors. SN 2006gy image

Note that on the bottom of the NASA webpage that you pulled this image from (here) there is a link to the original authors (here) at the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. The image is also credited to them (NASA/CXC), which means it is their work. Their image use policy (here) clearly states "The images on this web site may be used for non-commercial educational and public information purposes", means it can't be used on the Commons. Thanks. --Tom (talk - email) 21:11, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Ooops! Thank you for the note, Tom. I had thought that the Chandra X-Ray Observatory was NASA's, so the image must be PD. I didn't know that the Chandra X-Ray Center was not part of NASA. I'll be more careful next time. Thanks, again. --PFHLai 09:16, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
I've been in contact with the observatory to help clear up their copyright policy. It ends up that images credited to NASA/CXC (and also NASA/CXC/[name of specific author], i.e. NASA/CXC/M. Weiss), are public domain images that have the same usage restrictions as any standard NASA image. Their "noncommercial and educational use only" policy is in place because they use a great many images from third parties. For example, the photo montage that was uploaded has one PD image (the illustration, which I believe is what you cropped and uploaded) and at least one copyrighted image from the Lick telescope. The other image credited to UC Berkeley may or may not be copyrighted; I'm clearing that up. Thanks for your understanding. --Tom (talk - email) 13:01, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
Thank you very much, Tom, for taking care of these copyright issues with the picture. I'm glad that the nice image is now available for all and back in use on the SN 2006gy page. And thanks for uploading the high res. version, too. Cheers! --PFHLai 23:05, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Comedy central logo.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Comedy central logo.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Srebrenica Massacre

I'm gobsmacked that someone thinks associating the word "tragedy" with the words "dying of starvation" expresses a point of view. If that's your take, so be it, but the objective detachment of Wikipedia administrators seems sometimes to be close to detachment from the world that the rest of us inhabit. --Opbeith 12:43, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi

Just so you know, this edit that you made back in January was actually a mistake - the Smoki were white businessmen and not an Indian tribe. See [1] to learn about them. Not a big deal, just telling you so you don't revert it back. An interesting bit of history. shoeofdeath 20:10, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

RE: Overcategorization

I just got your message about overcategorization for Maryland politicians. You make a good point about the redundancy. What do you recommend as a resolution? At this point, cleaning it up would be a lengthy project. Is there a auto-bot that could do it for me?

Also, I see that you are a Wiki Administrator. How do you go about becoming one? I have been on a personal crusade to add bios for current and historical members of the Maryland State Senate and Maryland House of Delegates - despite some attempts by rogue editors to delete them claiming that they are encyclopedically insignificant. I counter-argued that if they are deleted, I will make the same argument and start deleting all English footballers and rugby players.  :-)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:George McGovern bioguide.jpg, by Wooyi, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:George McGovern bioguide.jpg fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

Already in commons as Image:George McGovern bioguide.jpg

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:George McGovern bioguide.jpg, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Image:George McGovern bioguide.jpg itself. Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Al Pacino and Robert Duvall in the Godfather.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box.
