Help with Citrix Systems re: GoTo sale

Hi, Timtempleton. I noticed you added the spinoff of the GoTo product line to the Citrix Systems article a while back and I was wondering if you'd mind checking out my updates for the material now that the merger is complete. I am making the suggestions on behalf of Citrix, so I don't want to change anything in the article myself. You can view my suggested revisions on the Talk page here in the "Updating re: GoTo products sale" section. Thanks! 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 18:16, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for April 3

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Oliver Wyman, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Big Three. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Explanation about the editing in 'Titan Sports Media Group'

Titan is not a mistranslation. In China people usually translate the names of their organizations, companies according to pinyin. Here the pinyin of 体坛 is Titan —— so its English name is Titan Sports Media Group, just coincidentally the same name as the Greek divine beings. But here titan refers to 'Sports field', as its Chinese characters indicate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ujishadow (talkcontribs) 11:18, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

Done Hi Timtempleton! I'm working on the entry for Kirill Tatarinov, the CEO of Citrix. You've helped my Beutler Ink colleague before with edits to Citrix Systems, so I was wondering if you would be able to review two passages I'm suggesting be added to the article? I found new details in recent sources that I think will make his entry more robust. You can have a look at the new material in my Talk page note. Speedy deletion nomination of NJFX

Hello Timtempleton,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged NJFX for deletion, because it seems to be promotional, rather than an encyclopedia article.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

Mduvekot (talk) 18:27, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Information icon Hello, I'm El cid, el campeador. Wikipedia is written by people who have a wide diversity of opinions, but we try hard to make sure articles have a neutral point of view. Your recent edit seemed less than neutral and has been removed. If you think this was a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Re your edit summary - calling a source 'obviously false' and 'conservative' makes your edit look biased. I'm not saying the source is correct, I'm just telling you to make sure you stay neutral. Thanks! Єl Cid, Єl Caɱ̩peador ‡ ᐁT₳LKᐃ 20:55, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

I left a response on your talk page. For interested readers, here's the edit in question [[1]]. I normally stay out of the political fray on Wikipedia, but with the horrific shooting today, I went to Representative Scalise's article to learn his political positions, and was surprised to read an obviously false statement backed up with overlinking. I don't think the statement should have been allowed in the article, especially since the writer doesn't seem to be notable, which I can only attribute to an overeagerness to be neutral and include all perspectives, but it's there nonetheless. Rather than delete it, and potentially be more controversial, I added qualifying info from the NY Times that shows the info to be false - info that was already in the article - I just reused the ref name. In my edit summary, I made it clear that the statement was false and that the sites used as sourcing are well known conservative sites, but nothing in my actual edit was anything but factual and encylopedic. You can decide for yourself. Part of why the original phrase was troubling to me is that false political news has inflamed societal tensions on both sides of the aisle, and may very well have been a factor in today's shooting. Let's not inflame people with lies and misrepresentations. Bigger picture, it is also a bit concerning that factual info that is beyond reproach might be considered for deletion not on its own merits, but if another editor knows that the person who added the info feels strongly one way or another. Edits should be judged on their own merits. Oddly, contrary to the above statement, the edit was not reverted (as of Wednesday night) - not sure why. But, since I was approached on my talk page, I wanted to defend the edit. Perhaps El Cid reconsidered after rereading what I wrote, or got sidetracked and may still delete my edit. Timtempleton (talk) 00:41, 15 June 2017 (UTC)
I never intended to delete your edit, otherwise I already would have. I was essentially just advising you to not make political statements in edit summaries because people use that type of thing to invalidate otherwise valid edits. Sorry if this 'warning' seemed uncool but it really has no effect on you as a user, unless you violate it 5 times consecutively in a short amount of time. Feel free to delete the warning, but the sentiment behind it remains. I have no problem with your edit, and in fact if I were you I would have deleted the sentence itself (which I might do depending on the research I perform after posting this) Єl Cid, Єl Caɱ̩peador ‡ ᐁT₳LKᐃ 00:57, 15 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying - and you seem more measured than I am, so if you decide to remove the line that would be great. It seems to me to be pandering to a conservative base. And thanks again for the tip. Someone joked once that the shorter the edit summary, the less likely it is to be reverted. "CE" is never reverted. lol Timtempleton (talk) 01:11, 15 June 2017 (UTC)

Objectivism discussion

I don't know why the content fork in Objectivism (Ayn Rand) and Objectivist movement occurred. But I will investigate and see if there is any prior discussion. Often there isn't any, or very little, in these situations, but every once in awhile there is an articulated good reason. I agree that at first blush the two could be merged with a net benefit. If not merged it is often possible to get a proper scope worked into the lead of each article so that subsequent editors are provided with some guidance. I'll look into it, and let you know what I find. As to the deleted article, I just did not find encyclopedic content. --Bejnar (talk) 20:56, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

Sounds good. And would I be off to say that it's possible that Objectivism is unpopular here? To me it seems absolutely contrary to the ideals of an encyclopedia of volunteers, collectively and unselfishly working to achieve something bigger than themselves. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 20:58, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
Apparently not entirely alien. There was a WikiProject that was active 2006 through 2011: Wikipedia:WikiProject Objectivism. It is worth taking a look at their page. I found that there has been a lot of edit warring over the years on the various Ayn Rand articles, and a huge amount of discussion. One of the points at issue was the allegation that the movement was a "cult". There are 49 archive pages for Talk:Ayn Rand, and 14 for Talk:Objectivism (Ayn Rand). The Objectivism (Ayn Rand) article was created in August 2001, originally entitled Objectivism, then Objectivist philosophy. Objectivist movement was proposed in December 2004 and created in February 2005, although without much discussion, and was split off from Objectivism (Ayn Rand) with this edit. It was done by Philwelch, who basically quit editing in 2011. Having gone through this exercise, I see the logic in having the two articles, which does not mean that some clean-up wouldn't be in order. I haven't quite finished thinking about the scope issue. --Bejnar (talk) 01:24, 8 July 2017 (UTC)
quite a few of the people prominent in the first few years thought they were very much influenced by Rand, at least at the time. My impression is that make people with a attraction towards anarchism tend to have an idiosyncratic accumulation of concepts. DGG ( talk ) 01:52, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

Terror guideline

Hello, at this AfD you discussed a hypothetical policy for terror-related articles; in principle, I agreed with what you had to say. Could we work out an actual policy on such incidents or an additional line to an already-existing guideline? Unfortunately, we need something more clear-cut than WP:NOTNEWS or WP:EVENTCRIT -- something even staunch news inclusionists cannot ignore or misconstrue.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 18:14, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

I like that idea. I have participated in two terror event AfD discussions - one I voted keep that was kept and one I voted delete that was deleted, so I think I have a general idea of what is notable and what isn't. It might be useful to identify other terror-related AfD discussions and then synthesize as much feedback and potential opposition as possible before writing something. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 23:39, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
I have participated in nearly a dozen terror-related AfDs; unfortunately, the discussions are ugly and it whittles down to the same 4 or 5 "regulars" who habitually vote keep. I think, in this proposed guideline:
1) a significant long-term societal or political impact needs to have already been established. The coverage itself cannot be argued as being that said impact. 2) Diverse coverage that analyzes the event and does not just rehash the same narrative. 3) Reports on the trial (assuming the suspect(s) lived) or a profile of the suspect(s) are considered routine. 4) International coverage from several media outlets may make the subject more notable but should not be the sole basis for creating an article.
These are just a few thoughts and I would value any criticism or other ideas. I'll also work on a list of recent AfDs as you recommended.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 01:02, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
@TheGracefulSlick - after the Yavneh article was kept, despite our efforts to sway consensus, I'm thinking that there's less incentive for us to come up with a terror related policy. If our arguments had been successful, there would have been more incentive to formalize them. Now I'm not sure it is worth what will likely be considerable effort. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

OVERLINK is not the same as DUPLINK or REPEATLINK or

In this edit you claim the repeated link is a WP:OVERLINK, when I think you mean it's MOS:DUPLINK or WP:REPEATLINK. Walter Görlitz (talk) 21:37, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

I did not know that. Thanks for the clarification. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 23:28, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors December 2017 News

Guild of Copy Editors December 2017 News

Hello copy editors! Welcome to the December 2017 GOCE newsletter, which contains nine months(!) of updates. The Guild has been busy and successful; your diligent efforts in 2017 has brought the backlog of articles requiring copy edit to below 1,000 articles for the first time. Thanks to all editors who have contributed their time and energy to help make this happen.

Our copy-editing drives (month-long backlog-reduction drives held in odd-numbered months) and blitzes (week-long themed editing in even-numbered months) have been very successful this year.

March drive: We set out to remove April, May, and June 2016 from our backlog and all February 2017 Requests (a total of 304 articles). By the end of the month, all but 22 of these articles were cleared. Officially, of the 28 who signed up, 22 editors recorded 257 copy edits (439,952 words). (These numbers do not always make sense when you compare them to the overall reduction in the backlog, because not all editors record every copy edit on the drive page.)

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 April; the theme was Requests. Of the 15 who signed up, 9 editors completed 43 articles (81,822 words).

May drive: The goals were to remove July, August, and September 2016 from the backlog and to complete all March 2017 Requests (a total of 300 articles). By the end of the month, we had reduced our overall backlog to an all-time low of 1,388 articles. Of the 28 who signed up, 17 editors completed 187 articles (321,810 words).

June blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 18 through 24 June; the theme was Requests. Of the 16 who signed up, 9 editors completed 28 copy edits (117,089 words).

2017 Coordinator elections: In June, coordinators for the second half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 moved back into the lead coordinator position, with Miniapolis stepping down to remain as coordinator; Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators, and Keira1996 rejoined after an extended absence. Thanks to all who participated!

July drive: We set out to remove August, September, October, and November 2016 from the backlog and to complete all May and June 2017 Requests (a total of 242 articles). The drive was an enormous success, and the target was nearly achieved within three weeks, so that December 2016 was added to the "old articles" list used as a goal for the drive. By the end of the month, only three articles from 2016 remained, and for the second drive in a row, the backlog was reduced to a new all-time low, this time to 1,363 articles. Of the 33 who signed up, 21 editors completed 337 articles (556,482 words).

August blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 20 through 26 August; the theme was biographical articles tagged for copy editing for more than six months (47 articles). Of the 13 who signed up, 11 editors completed 38 copy edits (42,589 words).

September drive: The goals were to remove January, February, and March 2017 from the backlog and to complete all August 2017 Requests (a total of 338 articles). Of the 19 who signed up, 14 editors completed 121 copy edits (267,227 words).

October blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 22 through 28 October; the theme was Requests. Of the 14 who signed up, 8 editors completed 20 articles (55,642 words).

November drive: We set out again to remove January, February, and March 2017 from the backlog and to complete all October 2017 Requests (a total of 207 articles). By the end of the month, these goals were reached and the backlog shrank to its lowest total ever, 997 articles, the first time it had fallen under one thousand (click on the graph above to see this amazing feat in graphical form). It was also the first time that the oldest copy-edit tag was less than eight months old. Of the 25 who signed up, 16 editors completed 159 articles (285,929 words).

2018 Coordinator elections: Voting is open for the election of coordinators for the first half of 2018. Please visit the election page to vote between now and December 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Thanks for participating!

Housekeeping note: We do not send a newsletter before (or after) every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your watchlist.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Miniapolis, Corinne, Tdslk, and Keira1996.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Comparison of version control software, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Unreal and Unity (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

You might want to read WP:TPOC. There's no need to fix typos in other editors' talk page posts and it's not considered good talk page etiquette. It was a two-week-old post and you were not even replying to that thread. Please, just leave it alone next time. Normally I wouldn't get annoyed about this, but this is the second time someone has done this to my talk page posts on this same subject today, and you don't have the excuse of being an inexperienced editor. Meters (talk) 00:39, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

No need to undo your corrections or anything like that. It's just not a good idea to make them in the first place. Meters (talk) 00:43, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up - I was in copy edit mode and did the edits instinctively. I would never edit to change meaning, but if you've read Thinking, Fast and Slow you'll know that a typo is as harmful as a poor argument when trying to make a point. We immediately subconsciously discount arguments made with typos, so writers trying to sway others with their arguments should appreciate the fixes. In any case, I'll avoid this in the future. Cheers.TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:54, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
No biggie. Sorry, it was a bad day. Meters (talk) 23:59, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

Moving articles

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Perforce a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. -- intgr [talk] 09:31, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

intgr Thanks for pointing out my mistake. I’ll request the move. It’s not likely to be a contested move. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 15:19, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
I just undid the move and requested the technical move. There is one edit that was done to the new article after I moved it. Is there a way I'm supposed to account for that? Should I undo it after the move, and then notify the editor so he can make the change again? TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 15:35, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

GOCE February 2018 news

Guild of Copy Editors February 2018 News

Welcome to the February 2018 GOCE newsletter in which you will find Guild updates since the December edition. We got to a great start for the year, holding the backlog at nine months. 100 requests were submitted in the first 6 weeks of the year and were swiftly handled with an average completion time of 9 days.

Coordinator elections: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2018 were elected. Jonesey95 remained as lead coordinator and Corrine, Miniapolis and Tdslk as assistant coordinators. Keira1996 stepped down as assistant coordinator and was replaced by Reidgreg. Thanks to all who participated!

End of year reports were prepared for 2016 and 2017, providing a detailed look at the Guild's long-term progress.

January drive: We set out to remove April, May, and June 2017 from our backlog and all December 2017 Requests (a total of 275 articles). As with previous years, the January drive was an outstanding success and by the end of the month all but 57 of these articles were cleared. Officially, of the 38 who signed up, 21 editors recorded 259 copy edits (490,256 words).

February blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 February, focusing on Requests and the last articles tagged in May 2017. At the end of the week there were only 14 pending requests, with none older than 20 days. Of the 11 who signed up, 10 editors completed 35 copy edits (98,538 words).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Miniapolis, Corinne, Tdslk, and Reidgreg.

Proquest

Paywalled sources, which include not only Proquest, but many academic articles and a great many major newspapers, are not dead links, and should not be so marked. they are accepted on an assumption of the good faith of the editor who posted them. This is similarly true with quotations form and citations to books, somehting else that I often do. The problem, of course, comes when editors do not cite such articles in good faith. This does happen. But most editors in most articles act in good faith and we therefore accept such citations - and do not tag them as dead links. Wikipedia:Offline sources. But with specific reference tothe question you posed at an AfD, teh template you want is Template:Subscription required. Cheers.

Hi there. Continuing our discussion from the "List of wealthiest families" talk page, I was wondering whether you received any answer from that website regarding the questionable figures they provided. It is quite evident that their estimates are often based on clear rumors (here's another exmaple [3]), and a quick look at WP:RSN further confirms this concern. Yet the website is used as a source on several dozen wiki articles - from most of which it may need to be removed. Yambaram (talk) 20:15, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

Nope – they never got back to me. Which likely tells you how reliable their numbers are. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 23:03, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
Well, this is what I assumed. Their wealth estimates cannot be cited if no other reliable source (Forbes, Bloomberg, or any other trustworthy investigative news publication) backs it up. I will soon go over these articles and replace/remove the web-link when needed. Regards, Yambaram (talk) 07:57, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

Desai is a surname and is not a title of royalty here

Hi Timtempleton, Recently you removed the word "Desai" from Shirasangi Lingaraj Desai which is a full name. Desai is a surname in this context hence is no more the title of royalty here. I will be briefing how the usual naming convention in North Karnataka would be. If we take the example of Lingaraj Jayappa Desai. Lingaraj is his name, Jayappa is his father's name and Desai is his surname. Usual naming convention in North Karnataka would be "Name/Father's name/Surname". Shirasangi is his village name. He was famously called Shirasangi Lingaraj among people. So, don't remove the word "Desai" from his name. Rishi Muni (talk) 05:35, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
