Editing URL's[edit]

Hi Tillingbourne, when editing the URL in the infobox, please use the URL template which is written as {{URL|www.example.com}}. Thanks, Steven (Editor) (talk) 19:06, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Steven, problem is that this allows the heading column to grow too wide. The URL template allows a break at a . - permitting a rescale which makes the template hard to read. Tillingbourne (talk) 19:10, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Can you give me an example of where you are having this issue? URL templates does not make the infobox wider, without the URL template it does. We should be using the URL template Steven (Editor) (talk) 19:15, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Steven. The problem is that the Infobox preferentially breaks the URL if the URL template is used rather than the label in the left hand column. So you get Department of Education URN across one line on the left and then the right hand column is compressed. Is there a way of getting the Infobox to preferentially put longer labels in the left hand column across two lines? Tillingbourne (talk) 19:30, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There's nothing wrong with that if the URL appears on two lines, if the URL is shorter then the URL template won't break it onto two lines — ultimately it stops making the infobox wider than it should be and instead conforms to the width of the infobox. When you add the URL template, Department for Education URN should automatically appear on two lines and fixes the compressed problem in the right hand column. Hope this helps, Steven (Editor) (talk) 19:42, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Steven, But that's the point it doesn't. The URL template appears to tell the infobox to break the URL in preference to Department for Education URN. So the URL us broken over two lines, but the Infobox tries (mostly unsuccessfully) to keep Department for Education URN on one line - it's just a mess!!! Tillingbourne (talk) 19:50, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please give me some examples so I can take a look, thanks Steven (Editor) (talk) 20:17, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Just have a look at the edits I've made today. Tillingbourne (talk) 20:21, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ewell Castle School is a good example. If I add a URL template, I get an overwide left column with Department for Education on one line and URN on the next. Tillingbourne (talk) 20:36, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I had a look at that one, I'm seeing Department for on the first line and Education URN below it? The infobox is displayed properly to me? Steven (Editor) (talk) 20:39, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It is now (the current version as edited by me), but if you look at the previous version (which used the URL template), you'll see the problem. Tillingbourne (talk) 20:42, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed — the reason why this was happening was because of the line break that was added to the colour boxes so that they appeared below the text. We don't usually add line breaks to the colour boxes, only if it doesn't fit on one line do we use it. Now for this school, it has three colours and needed a line break, as it didn't look nice having one colour box on the same line as the text and the other two below it — this issue doesn't happen for every school that uses line break, it may just be a rare occurrence or because the Department for Education title being too long, however it's likely this title will be shortened to DfE URN. Anyway for this article, instead of using a line break, I added a nowrap so they all appear on the same line. Steven (Editor) (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

But you haven't fixed it. All you have done with the no wrap template is force the right hand column to be wider. That was precisely what I was doing with the URLs. You've just found a different way of getting the same result! Tillingbourne (talk) 21:11, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You’re right, I didn’t notice that! I will raise the issue but please add the URL template as we should be using this in the Infobox. Thanks, Steven (Editor) (talk) 21:32, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK. If you would like to put a request on the talk page for Template:Infobox school asking for Department for Education URN to be shortened to DfE URN or even just DfE, I will happily support. Tillingbourne (talk) 21:37, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
