• I googled a bit after your reply. There might be something interesting here. According to Columbia Encyclopaedia 'The Dutch captured it in 1663 and the British in 1795.' A site on Kerala history says that after the Mysore war of 1799, both Travancore and Kochi 'were forced to accept British residents for the rest of their history'. From here, Travancore had their first resident in 1800. So it looks like that British had some sort of foothold by the very early 1800s. I'll check Britannica and add their POV in the evening. When the Portuguese penetrated the Indian Ocean in the late 15th century and reached India's southwestern coast, the Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral founded the first European settlement on Indian soil at Cochin in 1500. Vasco da Gama, discoverer of the sea route to India, established the first Portuguese factory (trading station) there in 1502, and the Portuguese viceroy Afonso de Albuquerque built the first European fort in India there in 1503. The city remained a Portuguese possession until it was conquered by the Dutch in 1663. Much Portuguese architecture still exists in the city.

Under Dutch rule (1663–1795) Cochin had its greatest prosperity. Through its harbour were shipped pepper, cardamom, and other spices and drugs as well as coir, coconut, and copra. Allof the city's racial and religious groups, including its Hindu majority and Muslim, Syrian Christian, and Jewish minorities, shared in the city's prosperity.

British rule over Cochin lasted from 1795 until 1947, when India became independent.

Since EB and Columbia states it in a straightforward fashion, they must have been here. It is for us to find out whether they had the complete Cochin under their control, or just some pockets. If it is the former, the treaty might have validated something that had already been accomplished.

No idea what the Portuguese and Dutch did. During the time of the Brits, they were nominally the rulers but paid a sizable amount to the British empire (represented by the Resident) to 'protect' them.The others also may have followed the same model.

Portuguese_Empire#in_Asia says that Cochin was colonized in 1500. They landed here in 1500, so we have to be clear about what we mean by 'ruled from 1503'.

These are little things but the Wiki article is already the best article about Kochi online. People are bound to refer this for info about Cochin and quote our data. So, I have to ask...

I notice a number of articles created by you recently that deal with... well, individual streets, non-notable companies... train stations? Most of these have no notability asserted and are non-encyclopedic. While I appreciate your efforts to create articles about your home town, and some of the articles you've created meet notability criteria, many of them don't.

For instance, a page on Hight_Court_ferry would be approximately equivalent to my writing an article on a particular marina in Toledo, OH. It would not be something useful to a researcher.

I'd hate to AfD a score of articles; can you establish notability for some of these places? --ES2 15:17, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

• I hadn't noticed the PR tag when I originally looked at the base article. I think the problem here is balance, as you say, between too many wikilinks and too few wikilinks. I think the solution is to cut down on the number of things available for linking. Only the most prominent companies, places (for instance, Park Avenue (Kochi) presumably compares with Park Ave in New York or the Champs-Elysees, or something like that), etc. Discard the rest, and suddenly you have many fewer excess NN articles. Yes to make Kochi (India) properly readied in response to peer review, Deepujoseph had to built so many stubs. Basically, my advice would be to curb the number of institutes etc from Kochi. Please look at the peer review. There also it has been suggested that you keep the really important institutions, roads, etc rather than a whole bunch of it, each with a link to a stub. If these are non-notable, they do not deserve to be in Kochi article. While if they are notable, they deserve their seperate articles also, and not just one-liner articles.

Deepu, I faced similar problems while Kolkata was in peer review and FAC. I had to remove some entries, but I took care that the stubs I am making are not so small. I took time of course. You take time, and go on creating substantial stubs for things that you feel really necessary. If you cannot make a substantial stub for an entry, that entry does not deserve to be in the main article either. But for FAC, you should be ready for any sorta question, which sometimes may include demand for wikilinks. You have to make a balance between really notable stuffs and stuffs that are just mentionable. There is no point making a list of stuffs related to the city. However, take care, what you mention does have a proper stub, if not non-stub articles! Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:11, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Don't remind me...

I've had asthama since childhood. I have consistently refused to have a live fish stuffed down my throat despite however much my mother insists it'll cure me :(

The Goud brothers have been holding this fish swallowing event every year, sometime late summer.... Apparently they are following their father's footsteps cause this event has been held for the last fifty years. Until recently these guys used to be supplied with fish by the fisheries department. But when a few newspapers questioned the treatment and someone filed a PIL against the brothers the government stopped helping them. The brothers are really not concerned actually. They don't make a profit (usually spending a lot of their own money every year...) and the crowds are only growing bigger every year. It seems as far as they are concern they are doing a religious family obligation given to them by some saint.

They keep their paste formula a close family secret, with the only known fact being the type of fish they use. Its a very small fish (I not sure of the type) I don't know if the treatment is effective or not, but with 5 lakh(and counting) annual visitors its pretty good for the local tourist industry! --hydkat 04:49, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Some of the links there ARE commercial links. To information pages, not sale pages, but still commercial. If we erase those, we have nothing but some pages put up by an American who pretends to be be a Bharatnatyam dancer at Society for Creative Anachronism gatherings. On Wikipedia, we generally only allow the attribution and sharealike-attribution CC licences, because these are compatible with the spirit of the GFDL, which allows commercial use. Joseph, once again thankyou for all your assistance with Wikipedia. I hope i am not bothering you asking your help on such topics. i have 2 more questions.
1 on user talk pages and discussion pages i notice next to their signiture it sais in brackets (talk) and sometimes (talk|contributions), what do i type to make these appear in my signiture(as all i do at the momment is cut and paste from examples).
2 The more of Wikipedia I explore the more i see examples of advanced editing, and the only way i know how to replicate them is cut & paste, is there a help section on advanced editing within Wikipedia. example, your signiture has differewnt fonts and font colours, how do learn things like this without having to ask you all the time.

I do not know where I can refer you for reading the advanteges of citeweb and citenews. From my own experirence, those are much extensive, and are automatically formatted (italicised as needed, dates hyperlinked) once you fill up the template. Moreover, during the FAC of Kolkata, someone raised the question of proper formatting of references. After that, the references there had to be changed to those format. I just saw the article Kochi. I must say that the referencing may look good, but not perfect. Because, they do not give date of retrival (date when the URL was accessed). This is needed, as URLs can change over time. However, if one has the date of accessing, one can see the cached image of the URL, or retrieve from the Internetarchive. Also, IMo, some citations lacked the name of the author.

If you want to know my opinion, I would like to see health care in Kochi. However, if you want the opinion of Wikipedia, you should remove it as per Wikiproject Indian cities. There was some talks going on regarding introducing some flexibilities in that project, however, for the time being you should follow it, as the criteria for FA requires following of relevant project.

Some points: History still is lacking by 40 years! Economy may need summarisation, with creation of a daughter article. You should wikilink any person/places you name in the article- thats not a rule, but gradually FACs are becoming strict! The idea is if something/someone is worth mentioning in an FA, it shoiuld at least have a stub article for himself/itself. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:58, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Inclusion of Hindi

Hi Deepu, I don't personally have a problem with its inclusion, but we are trying to get Indian cities' pages to conform to Wikipedia:Wikiproject Indian cities, which states that only the local language translation need be added to the article. Well, I am the only source at present as I belong to that region :-). The local newspapers there would carry the news every year. It is a small event not very well known in Tulu Nadu itself. However, I am not sure if I got the name correct. It has been almost a decade since I left that place. And not many of my acquaintances there aware of that event.

accuracy of wikipedia articles

Thanks for suggesting that I become a registered member. I am just about to sign up.

Anyways, I'm quite curious how Wikipedia makes sure the articles are accurate.

I was reading an article on recent anti-reservation demonstrations and found that the article mentioned "T.B.Chandrahari" instead of "V. P. Singh" as India's PM of 1989. Looks like some guy named Chandrahari had played mischief with the article.

How is this monitored?

All of us registered wikipedians have included certain pages in our watch list. We monitor these pages often, and check all the changes that are made. If any inconsistency is noted, people will either edit it and correct the mistake (as you have done - thanks! ), or flag it was possibly inaccurate data using different methods available on wikipedia (this includes usage of templates). The anti-reservation page was just created yesterday, and it went through a lot of editing in one day itself, as it appeared in the news section on the main page.
The accuracy of articles here on wikipedia cant be guaranteed fully. See Wikipedia:General disclaimer. However there are hundreds of registered and unregistered people working behind each of these articles, and we strive to make it as accurate as possible. Also, you might have noticed that each page has a talk or discussion page, where you can discuss stuff with other wikipedians. Perhaps, if you like the power-related articles I hope you would take a look at People's Republic of China as an emerging superpower. For some reason it seems that Indians and Chinese try to push their POV on each other, leaving the European Union to its ultimately very peaceful rise. Brought Kochi Rajyacharithram by KP Padmanabhamenon (not Puthezhathu Raman Menon as mentioned earlier). It seems to contain everything that we need to know about early history. I am not able to read the Malayalam font in my browsers but this is what Menon says in p.575 (rough translation) : On August 18, 1790, Mr Powney (not sure who he is) informed the British govt that the King of Cochin had agreed to accept the dominance of the British, in place of Tipu. But the treaty between the Brit govt and the King was written on January 6, 1791 (the word used in the place of 'written' is 'ezuthi pakarnnu'). There had been discussions with Powney as early as in 1789 about a treaty with the British. This was the first treaty between Perumpatappu swaroopam and the British. The next three pages describe the treaty. In it the British agrees to recover the areas conquered by Tipu, and the King agrees to pay Rs. 70,000, 80K, 90K for the first three years and 1 lakh from the fourth year onwards.

To continue the story, with some help from History_of_the_Netherlands#Batavian_Republic_and_French_rule, France invaded Holland in 1795 and William V of Orange fled to England. From there, he issued a proclamation giving away the Dutch posessions in the East for 'safekeeping' with the English who were the allies of the Dutch. The Cochin fort was under the Dutch governor J.N. Van Spall at the time. When the British 77th company under Major G Petrie came to take posession, he refused to give up the fort. The standoff lasted for a few months. On October 19, 1795, Petrie brought more soldiers and ammunitions for an attack. When a cannonball landed near the residence of Van Spall, he raised the white flag. The fort came under the control of the British on October 20, 1795.

The treaty of 1814 passed the control of the fort etc. (the book uses the word 'kochi kottayum keezhetangalum - not sure what the last word means) permanently to the British. So the years 1791, 1795 and 1814 are all correct to some extent. Tintin (talk) 01:36, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Joshna Chinappa article

I was browsing through and saw the Joshna Chinappa article. I felt that this sort of sounds odd.

Joshna Chinappa (born 1986) is a squash player based in Chennai India who used to coach at the India Cements Academy until her father made her quit it. Instead of thanking the Academy she ungreatfully said that they had never coached her, a fact which is false and can be checked by reading any of the back issues of the Hindu newspaper online.

I was looking at the article to see who Joshna Chinappa is. I dunno anything about her. But, the article sounded odd. What should be done? I started the talk page on it and wrote Should this be reworded?. Is that what I should have done? Or is it ok to go ahead and reword it myself?

Unwanted tips

You should concentrate on building up daughter articles (demographics, economy, culture etc.). Write in the daughter articles in details. Summarise in Kochi. This works good. Also, if someone else tries to summarise/edit, it would prove to be helpful. As many number of wikilinks as possible is a good way for city articles, since it becomes often difficult to finalise what to leave in the main article.--Dwaipayan (talk) 10:00, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Kochi looks really good! Should be there in FAC soon. However, some daughter articles may be needed. And an invaluable suggestion, request Nichalp (talk · contribs) for a quick look. He can point out stuffs we cannot even think of. I see you have sacked healthcare quite mercilessly, where have all those link gone? Have you created any direct link in the article? For example, under economy, you can state that Kochi has a flourishing health care industry, and wikilink "health care industry" to a daughter article, say, "healthcare in Kochi" that will discuss all those hospitals (a stub article, no probs). I see you have the mention of health services, but that links to "medical tourism". A few points:

• inward remittances by Non Resident Indians (NRI) is a major source of income: may be hard to understand at one go fot non-Indian readers.
• IMO, in Transport, intra-city transport should be given slightly more space, may be at the cost of national/international transport. Is there local trains? Is there only private buses, no govt buses? Any special kind of transport?(ok, I see ferry is there)
• There are 1,024 females to every 1,000 males - – which is higher than the national average. - is there any reason behind this?
• what is the status of communal harmony on the city?
• I see the article does not say major things about the "Utility services" like who supplies water from where? Where does wastes go? Electricity?
• Culture: What about films, architecture (any speciality?), any museum? There is a notion that Kerala produces a good portion of Indian porn movies - is it so? is the Malayalam movie industry based in Kochi? Any menrionable non-religious festival? Ok I see Kochi carnival (should wikilink that).
• You can name 2 or 3 famous colleges.
• What's the most popular sport? Cricket or football? or something else? Any special local game?

Kochi

I'll reply in a few days time because Hyder Ali's story is a 40 page chapter and I won't be around for most of this week, but it doesn't look like he reached anywhere near Kochi. There are a couple of mentions of Kochi making payments to him in 1765 and 1766 but as far as I can find in a quick glance, Chittoor in Palghat is the closest to Kochi that he came. Hyderali seemed to be in good terms with the Dutch.

How does literacy affect sex ratio ? Because that leads to girl children not being discriminated against and as women have a longer life expectancy ? Tintin (talk) 16:15, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
