Congratulations! The cabal is proud! I have the quirky DYK today, which is rare, and I don't quite know why music for peace was deemed quirky ;) - With the next pictured one, I'll be able to proclaim that I had all positions, and that's already in the pipeline. Many placements are thanks to you, so thank you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:46, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: I think we ran out of quirkies ;) congrats on getting Switch! It's much fun to see you throw yourself at this :) theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 17:49, 3 May 2022 (UTC)

Just an answer to what I did over the last days. (unsure if I know what "square" means here) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:10, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
I made my imaginary set of DYK in all positions (within less than a month, and focused on a broad topic, performances in Ukraine - for Ukraine - for peace), please check, so far on my talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:42, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

I saw the difficulty, so said that he is from Odessa and works at a German University. Struck by the reviewer. He has both passports, but traveled with only Ukrainian, and it took mighty diplomatic efforts to set him free. So I heard him play. Orange County charter vs. state constitution

Hi User:Theleekycauldron I see that you have added an alternative to the suggestion for a DYK for Florida Right To Clean Water. adding an alt :) theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 18:11, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

ALT0a: ... that Florida's Orange County was the first in the country to charter a right to clean water?

Thank you for contributing an alternative. However, there is a difference between the amendment to the county charter and the proposed amendment to the state constitution that makes the suggested alternative incorrect. The wording in my DYK suggestion is about the first county charter amendment that gave legal rights to nature, specifically, to the waters in that county alone by amending the existing charter for the county government.

... Orange County, Florida was the first county charter amendment in the United States to provide a legal basis to protect the waters within its boundaries? Source: Hightower, Jim, ‘’Give nature a seat at the governing table’’, The Hightower Lowdown, January 5, 2022

This is a fact based on the passage of the county charter amendment in the 2020 election.

The right to clean and healthy waters being proposed for the state constitution (that is not the subject of the DYK) differs, and I believe that the wording you have suggested as an alternative is misleading because the state constitution amendment will not grant a right to nature. The amendment of the state constitution will provide a law about enforcement of a recognized right of Florida citizens to clean and healthy waters and to provide the legal pathways to enforce that.

Could you please retract your alternative suggestion?

If you do, I will add (or you could add) the following as the alternative suggestion,

... Orange County, Florida voters passed the first county charter amendment in the United States to provide a legal basis to protect the waters within its boundaries? Source: Hightower, Jim, ‘’Give nature a seat at the governing table’’, The Hightower Lowdown, January 5, 2022.

I am open to other suggestions and I would be glad to provide the new alternative, but I am unsure of how to do that, now that the suggestion has been submitted, so it might be easier if you made a new alternative, Please advise... _ _ _ _ 83d40m (talk) 22:33, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

Textile

Hello! @Theleekycauldron, I need your help to promote Textile to GA. I have expanded and cited it to a certain level. Kindly spare some time to visit the page and guide me through which areas we can improve. I have identified that that some areas needs improvement . Thanks and regards RV (talk) 03:34, 10 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, @RV! Unfortunately, broad-concept GAs are, like, really not my thing. I'm a niche gal. I see you've asked Gerda – she's probably better for this than I am, although very busy. I will say that references to Britannica should probably be replaced- and you're right, that list is wonky. theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 06:28, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Hartsfield's Landing

On 13 June 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Hartsfield's Landing, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that The West Wing's "Hartsfield's Landing" is a homage to three tiny towns in New Hampshire? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Hartsfield's Landing. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Hartsfield's Landing), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

I should finally be back on Wikipedia "full-time" (as in, previous levels of activity). I will continue to fill in prep sets again like i was before. I had one quick question: where is the script you had made for promotions? I had lost the link.

GIF and "graphics"

I see that you reverted my addition of "graphics" as an example of a word with a hard 'g' sound in the lead section of Pronunciation of GIF. I disagree with your view that the example was inappropriately "pointed". In fact, that is a highly notable example that is discussed extensively in the body of the article, supported by five citations. Please see the first paragraph of the "Arguments" section. I think that example is worth mentioning in the lead, since much of the discussion of how to pronounce the acronym centers around the relationship to that word. — BarrelProof (talk) 19:31, 15 June 2022 (UTC)

@BarrelProof: Yes, I know it's highly discussed – that discussion is precisely why it should not be included in the lead as a one-word mention. It's not an accepted argument, it's disputed, and putting the word in the lead makes it seem like it's not (or like we're making a point in favour of it). Putting graphics in the lead that way has the effect of unfairly setting forward the system_acronym argument without the context of why it's disputed. For those playing along at home, I reverted this edit. theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 19:38, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
I disagree, since I think omitting any hint of that from the lead while describing the advocacy of the soft g approach there results in a clear bias in the other direction. I have just edited it again, trying a different approach that is not "a one-word mention". — BarrelProof (talk) 19:58, 15 June 2022 (UTC)

Mayoralty of John Lindsay

I added US$100,000,000 to the Mayoralty of John Lindsay hook per MOS:CURRENCY and not having it as "US$" has had a hook mentioned on ERRORS. SL93 (talk) 03:41, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

The reason for it being treated as an error is because the main page isn't US-centric. SL93 (talk) 03:47, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
@SL93: I'm not indifferent to U.S. centrism, but it's about a U.S. figure and the hook mentions that a U.S. organization is striking. People can put together from context which currency is relevant. I'd do the same for any other currency. theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 04:25, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
Alright, I guess. Though I wouldn't be surprised if such a thing is changed at ERRORS per when The Rambling Man brought it up there with a different hook. SL93 (talk) 04:28, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

Latter / last

Hi Leeky

Hope you're having a good morning. Just a quick heads up that I think you may have introduced a grammatical error in your edit here: here, changing last to latter. Per [1], if there are two things in the list, then "latter" is correct but if there are three or more then it should be "last". For example:

This point was also mentioned at Template:Did you know nominations/Betts, Hall, Leavell and Trucks during the nom page. It looks from WP:ERRORS like we might be about to change the hook anyway, but just thought I'd let you know for future reference! Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 13:13, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

Oy va voy, my mistake – thanks for the primer, Amakuru! theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 22:44, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
I was confused also so I searched Google for the proper use. I would have let you know about it, but I didn't notice the change until now. It's moot though with the new hook. SL93 (talk) 00:33, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

Possible PSHAW problem

Hi, in this edit you promoted a hook that had been struck. I dunno how PSHAW is used, but I'm guessing that you told it to promote hook ALT0a, but it erroneously promoted ALT0. Anyways, this has ended up at WP:ERRORS, so I thought you should know in any case.  MANdARAXXAЯAbИAM  09:57, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

  • Hey, Mandarax! What I'll tell you is that this isn't explicitly a PSHAW error – the error was fully my own in selecting and promoting the stricken hook. That said, the problem could have been avoided if PSHAW refused to recognize stricken hooks; I remember including a piece of code like that, but it ended up breaking the program in ways I can't quite remember. In any case, I'll definitely get on it in earnest; thanks for letting me know! theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 10:31, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
The salient difference being that in manual promotion, you really can't miss when a hook has been struck, the angle bracket tags are right there. With PSHAW, there's no indication left over in converting the hook to morebits. theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 10:33, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello Theleekycauldron/Archive/2022,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 12721 articles, as of 18:00, 4 May 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.

Juneteenth flag image and Claudia Riner

Kentucky Representative Claudia Riner in article from The Lexington Herald
Kentucky Representative Claudia Riner and her children and husband in article from The Lexington Herald

Hi, Leeky. Two points

  • Can I appeal to you to withdraw your objection to the image at Wikipedia_talk:Did_you_know#Prep_4:_Juneteenth_flag_(nom)? After making the objection, many, many people have shown up supporting the image, and, perhaps their arguments, and, I humbly hope, my arguments, might be convincing? Because we only have one day now, and an admin won't put it in the top slot for that day without consensus, which is everyone except you, and one other editor who objects because he wants the image to be even more similar to the flag, not less, it's Kafkaesque. Could you please review the arguments, and hopefully have them convince you, and say as much?
  • I added a couple of free images to Claudia Riner - even if you don't withdraw! Because any case, I appreciate your work, and I still remember your support on the DYK Yulia Tolopa. --GRuban (talk) 12:23, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
    • How are these two images free? The tag used, PD-US no notice, is from images published between 1927 and 1977. Both these images are published in 1980. – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 12:27, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
Right, thank you, fixed. I did the copyright search, just chose the wrong template. --GRuban (talk) 12:38, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
Hey there, GRuban! First – listen, you gotta know that I only have the highest respect for you and Bruxton. And thank you for the images for Riner :) I didn't know about the U.S. Copyright Office index when I first wrote that, so I thought those two were copyrighted by nature of being published by a large newspaper. Unfortunately, I can't say I'm on board. For me, it simply comes down to the idea that this collection of symbols is copyrighted, no matter what order they're in – and the fact that we're not pretending that this doesn't represent the Juneteenth flag makes me squeamish. I know it's not a pixel-for-pixel recreation on two of the symbols, but all the same.[a] I think you're right that there is consensus for the idea – I don't know why an admin hasn't acted on this yet.
That said, maybe there's a compromise solution? Narutolovehinata5 has an interesting idea I definitely support... maybe we could get that up and running less controversially, and an admin has already said they're willing.
I do recognize your predicament bureaucratically, which I'm sorry about; these decisions often come close, too close to the deadline. I know we disagree on this one, but in the end – flag or person – I do hope an admin will come along and swap in an image that we all can live with. In the end, it is just one. theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 17:21, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
Claudia Riner
My updated computer does not support my photoshop software so I cannot change anything. But I will re-register my disappointment in your efforts here. I did not at all understand why you just started a fire and then left. And when you have new information you dismiss it. Regarding Eeng, they are just disagreeable in my experience. DYK is clearly your fiefdom and you have well earned clout there: unfortunately you can use it to jam things up. As a relatively new editor here I have not experienced much friction from editors yet; when I had an inkling of it I withdrew, like I did with a DYK nomination. I just felt this was an important one, and after watching an Easter hook get run weeks after Easter I nominated this one early. Then when an image issue arose, I asked us all to discuss the new image on May 30. You waited until 3 days prior to hit this image. I know editors can have bad days and take it out on others, but geez. I would like to see your promoted set stay as it is because it is a great window into "making of the sausage" on the project, like other ridiculous discussions on wikipedia. Again, I am so disappointed in your efforts on this DYK. Bruxton (talk) 17:50, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
Presumably "disagreeable" is your improved estimation of me once I saved your bacon at the last minute [2]. EEng 03:32, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

Notes

  1. ^ Not for nothin', but if you wanted a way out of EEng's objections, there's plenty of options for colour display that don't give the Dutch inversion therapy; maybe three dots?
  • Leeky: I made the version with the dots, on the other place, and if you'd support it there we might yet get there.
  • Bruxton: You colorized the Riner image! That's wonderful! But how?!? I needs to know. --GRuban (talk) 19:00, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
@GRuban: It is an image app called Remini. It is free to use on your smart phone if you sit through some forced advertising. It does well on faces, but not backgrounds. Look at the LaVere Redfield image to see how it can clear up an image. Bruxton (talk) 19:15, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
Hah! I went to https://app.remini.ai/ and uploaded File:Ruth L. Bennett headshot.jpg - a very grainy image of an elderly light skinned black woman. It turned her into a gray eyed white man with a moustache and goatee! --GRuban (talk) 23:57, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

My friend once made three different cheesecakes and wanted to know which one we liked best. Tough. (She had none because she doesn't like cheese cake.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:30, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
how does one experience joy in the world, if not through cheesecake? baffles the mind... theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 06:28, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

surprised you are around today ;) - joy found on a bike tour, songs updated, but with a sad heart as explained on my talk, next to the flowers (or look for "Can we forget pettiness, please." - Language question: I understand that "advanced" means something like "moving forward improving"? If so, the hook about Paula Lizell, sayings that Wagner singing is an advancement over coloratura, is questionable, because I just don't think any reliable source would say so. (Heavy and loud is no advancement over sparkling and brilliant.) Is there a better expression to say neutrally that she first sang this, then that? (... on top of my problem with any hook that could be applied to hundreds of subjects, because guess what, it's just typical for opera singers to go from light to heavy, ... and on top of me being cross that a wonderful featured picture was not taken, which was the only reason to create the article.) Sorry for letting go frustration, - only the language question please. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:28, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Ugh, I gave up – the rule was designed to prevent me from spend sleepless hours in front of the computer, editing when no one's around, and it doesn't seem to have worked. But hey, messages from Gerda, always a fun time :) Sorry to hear about May's story, though. I think the equivalent case for others might be Jimmy Saville or Bill Cosby, they were both childhood heroes to many. Advancement can just mean "moving forward" – it's generally meant positively or at least affirmatively, but that's not necessarily the case. "The knight advanced menacingly towards the king, sword in hand". If you ever want to talk about something that's frustrating you, my emails are open – don't hesitate, I'm here. theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 08:36, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you on all accounts, and no need to ping me to discussions I initiated, at least not the same day. - The son of friends was chaplain where May was priest, - it's not only hero. We talked when he was in Wiesbaden, - and - laughing, chatting, last time - in 2008, when a friend and I, singers of St. Bonifatius, headed towards a station in Rome (!) and he did the same, - what a coincidence! - I saw the viral sermon the day it was given, I remember it being passed - and people holding their breath about his future. - Other notable chaplains of St. Bonifatius: Lothar Zenetti and Stefan Scholz (theologian) right (I recently wrote about the left). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:48, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Today. your day, thank you for Pronunciation of GIF, introduced: "Is it pronounced "gif", or is it pronounced "gif"? No one knows! But people seem to have very strong opinions on it, strong enough that many dictionaries, linguists, journalists, and even the White House took notice. The result of that ripe-for-Tumblr chaos is this article, neatly summarizing quite a few months' worth of research."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:44, 15 June 2022 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: An excellent work if I do say so myself! Let's hope C. J. Cregg is next :) theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 17:40, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for improving articles in June, and DYK! My song collection is especially rich, look, and the hall where I first heard DFD, Pierre Boulez and Murray Perahia. Do you find the baby deer in the meadow (last row)? - 20th of a month is for a round of thanks, as you may have noticed, - I hope I'll get to the Claudias tomorrow. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:37, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: good crop of articles this month! I do wish I had your motivation for the outdoors :) take your time on the claudias, all's well that ends well. theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 22:43, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
thanks for patience - today: a song about getting through the night, after plenty of music over the weekend --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:48, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Book of Common Prayer (1845 illuminated version)

I was thinking of this as a tweak to the hook - ".... that Owen Jones' elaborately ornamented Book of Common Prayer was said by the Oxford University Press to have "pointed to the direction that books in general were to follow in the Victorian Age"? The publisher of all the Oxford Guides could be added to the article with the book title also. Prior discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Words to watch has pointed to "reportedly" being a weasel word. SL93 (talk) 14:03, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

@SL93: true, but weasel doesn't apply to DYK hook if the full attribution is contained in the body of the article – it functions just like a lead. theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 02:18, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
I'm not sure where that has been stated at. On a side note relating to Errors, I could have sworn that there was no difference between the two soccer types considering every sport has players competing. I could post this at errors, but I don't want a certain editor to unfairly dig into my comment. SL93 (talk) 13:52, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
Amakuru mentioned a weasel word when pulling Template:Did you know nominations/LaVere Redfield from prep. SL93 (talk) 14:08, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, Bruxton! I am always getting flak from my family about not getting enough calories ;) theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 22:17, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
