MOS:JOBTITLES

I would appreciate it if you would avoid ascribing opinions to me which I have never expressed. I asked a question about the policy, months ago. At the time, the response to my question was unanimously yes. I, perhaps mistakenly, took the response as consensus and began to apply it in my regular editing. Which is when I bumped into you. Please stop saying I want one thing or another to happen. An RfC is a question. To this day, I myself can still !vote on the RfC "yes" or "no" if I choose. --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 15:29, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

well worth putting there, thanks for that JarrahTree 00:55, 18 January 2020 (UTC)

nope

as explained aowize - I have found some real humdingers, but then - when I just did a random sample, most lead paras and sentences are ok - so when the more atrocious ones arise I am adding a state to the 'was an australian politician' where obviously no effort was made to clarify where why and how... And the considerable inconsistencies of lead paras and sentences mean there is a substantial 'was an oz politician' that does not get qualified well into an article meaning many good eds couldnt give a rats.. The oh so fantastically notable footballer

Re your post here.

Oh how much I think that AfD / notabiltiy guidelines are so subjective. Totally agree. Why should a footballer who makes one appearance never to be seen again be "NOTABLE". Similary with cricket. One appearance at top level, no runs, no wickets, no catches, and they are "NOTABLE". Cheers Aoziwe (talk) 10:08, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

Reverting multiple edits

I realise that we have a difference of opinion about categorisation (which is not the topic of this post) but these reverts of multiple edits [2] [3] appear to undo perfectly valid edits unrelated to categorisation. Please be more careful, or discuss the matter on those articles' talk pages. Mitch Ames (talk) 01:15, 8 February 2020 (UTC)

apart from the categorisation, the dates things doesn't work everywhere yet (df=y) , try leaving it alone if you can't reliably and correctly edit-check the edit properly Dave Rave (talk) 23:37, 8 February 2020 (UTC)

Have I missed something? It's the only article on my watchlist with that issue so I edited it accordingly. Nonetheless - being in Category:National Trust of Western Australia suggest that the Trust owns or operates the building (which was why I actually checked out the page, because I hadn't thought Toodyay Court House was a NTWA museum) - that it is there because it is classified is absolutely not obvious. It really needs a Category:Places classified by the National Trust of Western Australia or equivalent wording if the intention is to form a category of classified places (which is a good idea). The Drover's Wife (talk) 23:31, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
gah its breakfast time here in perth, decorum please Slow down, have a look, there are actually up to four western australian editors working on the conflagoration of the national trust, heritage registers, lists of places, and the like - absolutely not obvious and whining etc, you may enjoy throwing NPOV language on talk ages, but hell, this is watched by some who will be seriously discouraged if they felt it was how things are worked through. JarrahTree 23:44, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
while you merrily improve the west australian project with vast amounts of local government history with the industry of editors of long ago, (of which we are indeed grateful for) there are a few things going on...
national trust article created yesterday
template for places created - what this means is the - three stage of any item that ends up on the state register has in most cases been
1970s listed by the national trust
1980s and later listed in Heritage/Municipal registers
2000s and later end up in the state register
(look inside any register entry and you can see the three level process templated inside their entries like that)
so if it is thought through, discussed, shared with fellow editors, we will have no doubt separate categories and so on to clearly indicate all of what has transpired from the original listing by the national trust, through to the stat register... then recently some of our editors cottoned in light bulb moments that heritage registers are tied in with local government so your insights and suggestions are helpful, but most who are involved are either on the way to work or breakfasting, cheers JarrahTree 23:55, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
if you consider some message of hold on, slow down as aggro, so be it - you are very productive editor, and you surely really get up quite a lot of other peoples noses regularly, think... you get to people, that can be both good and bad... JarrahTree 05:52, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

New river yard

I do not agree with your decision not approved to improve my page addition. To say it does not have significant context there is plenty of context on this page there is quite a few references everything listed is very relevant, not sure what what more is needed on this page I have seen plenty of Wikipedia pages with a lot and less information than this please explain if there's something I've done wrong let me know for can change it thank you.

There are some railroad Junctions that have Wikipedia pages though not many this one is relevant and important and the reason why plan on adding others in in the area is because this and others is a significant location for railfaining. The part about the steam excursions is more of an information included and for historical purposes is why that has included more so as in and about the location and about the history of the location.

But to summarize this Junction is important because it is a junction of two major railroad lines from two different companies and it is one of the most known a railroad Junction within this area so that's why it should be included all context is very relevant and on the subject matter.

so as far as this being notable as I have previously stated there are other Junctions on here listed I know there's not many but somehow those got approved also as far as reliable sources I do have references included what is relevant to the topic. if there is something I'm missing that I should add for this is more likely to be approved I would appreciate the suggestion I am a little new to editing subjects on here and adding adding subjects on here so now you're not coming across as harsh I hope I don't either but if there is something I can improve to suggest this I'm all ears I just like to know what it is?

I understand it's a topic that maybe only for specific people with a with a interest in railroads but for those that are this is a topic that those would be interested in. understand yes there's probably no way it could be improved but the but the dispute that it may not be a topic that should be included that is a matter matter of opinion that I cannot agree with so on that note there's really no reason for it not to be included either. though I can see you saying why should it be included but yet again there's no reason for it not to either I would say all I can do and prove it but there's really not much in proving that can be done the only thing left it is lacking pictures actually of the particular location but other than that that's it I think on that no doubt it's missing that that is another reason it should be included with the hope that someone else can add to this article to add pictures Etc. but I do hope you consider allowing this to be added thank you.

And I'm trying to understand your understanding of not enough context I am from the area I'm a huge real fan I'm very familiar with what I'm talking about so just did not sure where you get the not enough context. This more of something that would be a matter of opinion to say someone doesn't have enough context when I have plenty of information I have stated sources I put plenty of information on here any help would be appreciated but the say there's not enough context that is completely wrong. Your recent editing history at Jeremy Buckingham shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See the bold, revert, discuss cycle for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Please engage in a civil discussion over there as I don't want an edit war but there is no justification whatsoever for you to be so blunt in your deletion of my efforts to add well sourced material to the Wiki article. Also this policy Wikipedia:Ownership of content is being breached right now as you and the other editor disallow any well sourced additions by other editors trying to being some NPOV to this horribly, horribly bloated and grossly biased article where this living person is being demonized by the two of you and using our Wikipedia to do it! Jenny Mikakos

Would you please consider taking another look at Jenny Mikakos? Although the edit which you reverted had broken the markup with nowiki tags and may have appeared haphazard / spur of the moment, the issue itself has been the subject of some media coverage, the issue seems to be notable relative to the notability of the subject, and its inclusion in the article would avoid suggestions of bias in suppressing controversy. Me again

I wanted to a) genuinely thank you for pointing me towards that Newspapers.com account, and b) tell you how much your attitude really stank, and is starting to put me off contributing more towards WP. All I’m trying to do is to improve articles that can be saved, cut through the thousands of unnotable articles that are out there, and to try and make Wikipedia better. I’m a relatively new editor, I acknowledge, but I’m not stupid nor a punching bag for your ego.

I’m glad that you’ve found loads of sources for that article, brilliant, well done you, but look back at the way you said it - I thought you were very aggressive in the way you’ve done it, and it’s upsetting. I’m not here to argue, I’m here to improve WP using the policies. If you’ve got a tool that can help to indicate notability, brilliant - but work with your fellow editors and not against. Hello. I was wondering what kind of discussion was needed about this. Having a single template means that readers can navigate across all articles on parliamentarians, whereas having them split means a reader on the lists of the post-1977 MPs will only see lists going back to 1972. There seems to be no point at all in having separate templates, especially when one only has two links the other doesn't.

If you really want to keep the House and National Parliament lists separate, this can be done by groups in a single template (although even then, the National Parliament is just a renamed House rather than being a different body). Cheers, Number 57 22:57, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

I tend to disagree, but the main point was that having separate, unlinked templates is unhelpful to readers. If the two lists need separating, they can be done in the same template by something like this (which we could also add Legislative Council lists to). Cheers, Number 57 23:24, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
Cool, I shall do that. Cheers, Number 57 23:33, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Footballers

Hello again. I didn't want to get involved on any of the noticeboards about the women footballers due to the unpleasantness I've experienced from the canvasser in the past (and because unfortunately discussions about this sort of thing tend to descend into personal attacks quite quickly), but just wanted to engage constructively on your point about top division footballers.

I don't believe the guideline is discriminatory. Footballers are mainly notable because football is a spectator sport – we do not consider players of many sports notable, even if they have played for their country, because there is little interest in those sports.

Similarly, playing in a top division of a sport does not automatically make a player notable – what we need is some kind of evidence that playing in that league confers notability in some way. In terms of footballers, the professional status of a league is a key identifier that there is significant interest in the league (and therefore players are notable), as clubs have been able to raise sufficient funding via paying spectators, sponsorship or media income.

The guideline is simply a reflection of the real life level of interest in different leagues – that is where the problem is, and it is not Wikipedia's job to right societal wrongs. FWIW, I have an interest in women's football and travelled to watch England at the last World Cup in France. Cheers, Number 57 21:08, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

You talk about assumptions, but your first sentence ("of far less interest to less people)" contains a massive one :)
If the argument about levels of interest doesn't hold up, why can so few women's leagues afford to turn professional? At the top level, most of the money clubs receive comes from television rights rather than sponsorship, so surely if there was significant television coverage of the leagues, that would filter down into the clubs having enough money to pay a full-time wage? Unless the league can't negotiate a high enough price because it isn't deemed attractive enough for viewers?
The best real-life indicator of interest in leagues is probably attendances, and I have suggested in the past using that as a proxy for notability. Cheers, Number 57 23:25, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Interesting – and bizarre that they aren't fully-professional if they're pulling in crowds of over 10,000. Anyway, you should update List of attendance figures at domestic professional sports leagues as currently the Women's Big Bash is the only Australian women's competition listed as having higher crowds than the A-League. When I started becoming an active editor on Wikipedia, it admittedly took a while to find my feet and get the hang of what I wanted to do - which was to help edit and improve upon pages to do with Australian MPs, ministries and electorates. You were one of those who I looked to as an example to follow, and as already expressed by many others here I believe you've done a magnificent effort in helping improve the standards of Australian-related pages. I know very little of the circumstances that led to your decision to retire, but nevertheless I regret that it has come to this - especially over something as deplorable and petty as bullying.

We may have had our disagreements every now and again, but at the end of the day I like to think that whatever disagreements we may have had completely paled in comparison to the goals we had in common and areas of agreement that we shared. I have a lot of regard and respect for you, and I sincerely hope that this isn't the last we ever see of you. Nevertheless, I wish you well in your future endeavours. --Thescrubbythug (talk) 16:39, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi The Drover's Wife, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

Was just alerted to your retirement. Feeling a bit sad about it too. You've made an immense contribution to the story of Australia here - especially Australian politics. The Little Platoon (talk) 20:19, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Postage Stamp

There is a 2017 postage stamp from Australia Post. It depicts the Drover's Wife and her family plus dog confronting a snake in the doorway of their house. The wife is holding a babe in arms, while one girl is holding onto her mother's apron. The other girl is half-hiding around the corner. The boy is holding a large stick, while the dog is tense and ready to pounce. Are few cooking utensiles like a bucket and frying pan are out of reach as the snake is in the way.

See Stamp Bulletin.

Thank you

I logged in to formally retire and noticed you also have been bullied and have retired from Wikipedia in the last few days. I stopped editing a few months ago after harassment by a couple of editors (including administrators) over an article I was genuinely trying to edit properly, and ended up with a block. That was the last straw. A few months of not editing have been good and I haven't missed it. I'm sorry to see you go - your edits and expansion of the Australian Wikipedia have been outstanding, so please don't think that your efforts and work have gone unnoticed - we Australian editors in particular have been considerably grateful. Hopefully someone in Wikimedia management notices some day that if administrators treat others like that you lose your best editors. Unfortunately this seems to be all too common. Hope you can use your skills and knowledge to improve our world and country's collective knowledge somewhere else. Thank you and all the best! Bookscale (talk) 04:15, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

@Bookscale: Well last time "Wikimedia management" tried to get involved in stuff like that, it didn't go very well. Nil Einne (talk) 19:15, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
@Nil Einne:Dare I ask: Is that an allusion to a certain "whale" and a Japanese cisfemale editor? 😏 —Mohd.maaz864 (talk) 22:55, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
@Mohd.maaz864: no I have no idea what you're referring to. I'm referring to Wikipedia:Community response to the Wikimedia Foundation's ban of Fram and the other stuff that resulted from the WMF taking action against Fram. Nil Einne (talk) 06:43, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
I was actually self-censuring my words identifying that intervening party's stature in Wikimedia® Foundation's and the cross-border, cross-cultural admin at the receiving end of it. Given my cursory-obsession°, I've[ gradually] found that even her stature in English Wikipedia® is like what-I-term-as "Matriarch"/"Mother Figure" — particularly amongst her fellow admins and frankly, anybody with a greater WP:UAL in the hierarchy of this universe. Given human-nature, I could go on about third-parties but:
A) That would be gossip.
B) Talking about somebody behind their backs is frowned-upon. Arguably across all of the Human Civilisation.( I neither fully endorse, nor protest this morality.)
So as you might understand, for reasons aforementioned and to account for the nuance — for my self-preservation, I chose to censure myself. Hope this much of elaboration is enough for you to get the "L".( I could've tried dancing-around further by leaving number of[ informal/non-academic] Philosophical breadcrumbs but then.. Given my life-experience, that would've confused you even further — most-likely.)

Ahh... So it's clearly about a very recent case. My bad. I[ subconsciously] disregarded your “..last time..” by giving rise to my speculation that since it doesn't mean exactly the same as ‘latest’, perhaps you were referring to arguably one of the most, if not only — high[est]-profile community-administration( not in the Wikipedia®'s sense of the word, strictly for this sentence) case[s] in the whole of English Wikipedia® history. Thanks A Ton for your courtesy, though. I've[ got] nothing else to add.( I think.) Wish you wellness and prosperity in the rest of your lifespan. ☮️ out. —Mohd.maaz864 (talk) 16:40, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

Peterborough Town Hall

Hi - I had it in mind to move the article on Peterborough Town Hall to Peterborough Town Hall, South Australia as, with Peterborough, South Australia only having a population of 1,419, it is unlikely to be the primary topic. I note that you have retired from wikipedia but hope you are OK with that. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 14:03, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

NSW Heritage items

So the naming convention applied is that decided by a bureaucrat within the NSW Heritage Department. Am I right in thinking that these are just straight copy and pastes from their website? May explain the large amount of errors and outdated information. That is the problem when editors add articles on mass with little or no subject matter and thus cannot sense check. Oonoon00 (talk) 04:29, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

This. I've found this incredibly annoying. This is overkill. All that needs to be listed is that the entry has heritage listing, and then in your own words in maybe a sentence or two describe why. Including entire sections of texts copy-and-pasted directly is just incredibly unnecessary and clutters all of these pages. --Criticalthinker (talk) 08:51, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Sorry you're gone ☹️

Sorry (very belatedly) to see you gone. Totally not cool what has happened. In my case I'm a very sporadic editor so don't notice half the time that conflict is even occurring. There's been quite a bit written about the problematic culture here on Wikipedia. I don't know what to suggest, but accept really is a problem when it drives the likes of yourself away. The project is poorer as a result. Donama (talk) 05:16, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

Can I (even more belatedly) second this. Over the years I've seen your good work on all facets of Wikipedia and the place will be lesser for your absence.--Roisterer (talk) 23:41, 5 October 2020 (UTC)

I have given up on Wikipedia given the decisions it makes on deleting quality articles but this is one that truly deserves to be reversed. Maybe in death Wikipedia can see merit in Mark Bagshaw that it didn’t in life.

having been inthe bowels of rail history some years ago the contacts that I made at that time say I am totally wrong and the wagr to westrail transition saw no real difference - and that it was simply a marketing ploy - it eventuates thatthe changes that I had read into affleck narrative were prior to the wagr-westrail name change. I was sure I had alerted the proposer of the change that I was wrong, but this is wikipedia, some issues get up, sniff the air and wander off on their own merry way into the ether and they are hard to keep upwith sometime. Chris Crewther

Hi The Drover's Wife firstly, thank you very much for your extensive edits and clean up of the page, Chris Crewther, including eliminating the incorrect and libellous section. Noting the changes you have made, would you mind making a few minor changes and sourced re-adds as follows?:

1. Change "...international lawyer with the United Nations..." to "...international lawyer through the United Nations...".

2. Change "...CEO of Mildura Development Corporation (now Mildura Regional Development)[8]" to "CEO of Mildura Development Corporation (now Mildura Regional Development) and ran his own small business.[8]" (note: small business run both pre- and post- Parliament)

3. After "...under the Australian Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (JSCFADT).[1]." add the following factual and reliably sourced sentences (see below for relevant citations):

"In this role he instigated and led the 'Inquiry into establishing a Modern Slavery Act in Australia', resulting in the Inquiry's August 2017 Interim Report, December 2017 Final Report ('Hidden In Plain Sight') and Australia's Modern Slavery Act coming into force on 1 January 2019.

For this work, Crewther was named amongst Assent Compliance's 2018 Global Top 100 Corporate Social Responsibility Influence Leaders and awarded a Freedom Award from Anti-Slavery Australia in October 2019.

As Chair, Crewther also instigated and led an 'Inquiry into the Strategic Effectiveness and Outcomes of Australia’s Aid Programme in the Indo-Pacific', tabling the Inquiry's First Report in April 2019.

He was also a member of the Australian Parliament's Joint Standing Committees on Treaties and Migration, secretary and chair of the Coalition's Home Affairs and Legal Affairs Policy Committee, secretary of the Immigration and Border Protection Policy Committee, member of the Infrastructure, Regional Development and Northern Australia Policy Committee, member of the Foreign Affairs, Trade, Tourism and Investment Policy Committee and co-chair of the Australia-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group."

4. Change "...disadvantaged by an electoral redistribution, leading on primary votes..." to "...disadvantaged by an electoral redistribution which made Dunkley notionally Labor, leading on primary votes..."

5. Move "Crewther has also been a Board Director of Zoe Support Australia (helping young pregnant and parenting mothers to get back into education), Global Voices (helping engage and involve young people in international diplomacy), and several other boards and committees.[10][8]" to the base of the "Career" section. Labor members NSW Legislative Council

Following on from Fred Flowers, if you have the time / inclination, I would appreciate your views on Labor members listed in Members of the New South Wales Legislative Council, 1920–1922 - obviously those appointed are Labor, but what has me confused is this article in the The Australian Worker, which is usually reliable as to Labor membership, stated on on 1 September 1921 that there were only 4 Labor members of the council - Hepher, Bryant, Kavanagh and Sproule. which raises doubts about Connington (appointed by Holman in 1917), Travers and Wilson. While the later 2 were appointed by Labor, I'm struggling to find sources for which way they went in the Labor split. Cheers --Find bruce (talk) 01:04, 13 August 2021 (UTC)

Nice work on Connington - I hadn't noticed your recent updates & he's another interesting person who seems to have remained on good terms with all sides at times of deep division, especially as he expressly supported conscription without getting expelled from the party. As you say he was very busy as an industrial advocate & appeared for a host of different unions. Absence is one possible explanation, as is the independence that comes from a lifetime appointment. How they voted on abolition is a useful indicator - Travers voted against it in 1926, but wasn't in the 6 expelled, suggesting he wasn't Labor at that time.

The tougher question is whether he was independent, independent labor or nationalist. Won't help with Wilson as he died in September 1925. I will have a think about what other contentious votes might shed some light. Cheers --Find bruce (talk) 02:52, 13 August 2021 (UTC) Thanks very much for your help. I agree with Flowers & Travers - your research led me to a letter from Travers that confirms he resigned some time earlier, but not when. I will list Travers as independent from 1913 with a note that he resigned sometime after January 1913. I'm happy to leave Connington & Wilson as Labor until we find something clearer, but will add a note suggesting there is some doubt in 1921. --Find bruce (talk) 00:06, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

The Labor pledge, signed by Travers and others was I hereby pledge myself, on all occasions to do my utmost to ensure the carrying out of the principles embodied in the Labour platform, including the abolition of the Legislative Council The pledge: Premier tables papers. I am thinking that while signing the pledge was mandatory for candidates for the Legislative Assembly, it was not insisted upon for members of the council prior to their appointment, at least prior to Lang's involvement from 1922. Travers was clearly a Labor member at the time of his appointment - he was a member of the party executive up until March 1908, even though he was appointed by the Liberal government. I am surprised about the comment in the International socialist re Flowers - I would have thought he would have signed up as a candidate in 1895 and 1898 & I don't think they were required to sign it twice, which explains why Lang said 54 members of the Upper House have signed the abolition pledge, either when running as Labor candidates for the Assembly, or when nominating for the Council.Playing with fire In any event, as you say Flowers was a member of the Labor government up until 1915. --Find bruce (talk) 01:38, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

Castlemaine Brewery

My best guess is that the origins of the name actually comes from Castlemaine, County Kerry rather than Castlemaine, Victoria. The Western Champion

I've undone your changes to The Western Champion to make it a DAB page - in an ideal world that would be the correct approach. The problem is that Trove currently links The Western Champion (Queensland) to "The Western Champion" & The Western Champion (Parkes) to Western Champion. Until we get Trove to fix the links, I think its better to keep them linking to the correct articles. I have marked the redirects as R from incorrect name, which if I remember correctly will cause a bot to change the links to the redirect target.

You are right about the need to check the two different Trove pages are for the same newspaper & I happened to do so - Trove has 3 papers listed: The Western Champion (Blackall/Barcaldine, Qld. : 1879 - 1891) The Western Champion and General Advertiser for the Central-Western Districts (Barcaldine, Qld. : 1892 - 1922) and The Western Champion (Barcaldine, Qld. : 1922 - 1937), so continuous series and same publisher each time. Always happy to talk if you disagree. --Find bruce (talk) 09:16, 20 August 2021 (UTC)
