Listing deletions for the transfer drive

Hey there, I just wanted to thank you for diving headfirst into this. Because space is at a premium in the logs page, and because you've already deleted three times as many files as is the requirement for the only deletion related barnstar, once you get to 100 deletions, please just update the numerical count, and stop adding the line items, or just say "100+". Deleting the files after they are transferred is an important task, so by all means keep doing it though. Thanks again! Sven Manguard Wha? 16:23, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Gotcha, will do. :) Glad to be able to help out! - The Bushranger One ping only 16:24, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
FYI, the initial goal for this drive is 5000 files (with the understanding that if that is surpassed, we make a new goal). You've already done 2% of the initial goal, on the first day, by yourself. That's awesome. What's your trick? Sven Manguard Wha? 16:34, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
Finding a nice treasure-trove of one editor's mostly-PD aircraft pictures that had never been transferred, combined with a nice cup of very strong coffee. ;) - The Bushranger One ping only 16:39, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Jim1138

Thanks for letting me know about warning Effy2012. I am not sure what happened there. I am aware of the meaning of an original author blanking a page, but obviously did not follow policy there. I'll leave Effy2012 an apology. Thanks again for letting me know! Jim1138 (talk) 00:58, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

No worries, we all goof up time and again! Only the bots get to be perfect. :) - The Bushranger One ping only 00:59, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Vandal or not

24.148.104.102 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) is changing the names of a number of council member in a large number of pages. Most, but not all of the changes do not match members on the town's web sites. I don't think there have been any elections. Do you think it OK to revert No Cite? I left him a message but have not seen any reply. Thanks Jim1138 (talk) 02:19, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

If the previous content is long-established and verifiable, and the revisions are not, then yes - go ahead and revert. Things like that are sneaky vandalism (and Sneaky Number(s-changing) Vandalism is the worst...). - The Bushranger One ping only 02:23, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
It seems that if I did some digging, I would find hints that an election might have taken place, so uncertain if it is vandalism. The IP never replied to my question. So I stopped reverting his changes. Thanks for the help. Jim1138 (talk) 09:34, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
No prob. Weeding out the GF edits from the sneaks can make you pull your hair out sometimes... - The Bushranger One ping only 09:35, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

ACG Strathallan

Hi there, can you please have a look at Talk:ACG Strathallan? Thanks! Schwede66 18:53, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. - The Bushranger One ping only 20:03, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Just a "heads up" here, but apparently there is some conjecture as to bias in the article that an anon has used as the basis of some radical reverting. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 20:45, 6 January 2012 (UTC).

Facepalm Facepalm. I've added it to my watchlist. - The Bushranger One ping only 20:51, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

I have a video of him setting fast time in qualifying at a USAC midget race at the Dodge County (WI) fairgrounds back in 2008 here. I can convert it to OGG and upload it -- but I won't if it's not helpful. I get irritated with wasting my time if I upload it just for someone else to remove it from an article (like someone did to me with an image in the past few days without discussion). Do you think it would be useful for the article? I know the quality isn't great so please be honest. Royalbroil 05:31, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Well, as long as it's Commons-suitable, I don't see why there should be a problem with it. :) - The Bushranger One ping only 05:34, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
But of course! Commons loves videos. Commons is looking hard for free-use videos. One of my ice racing videos was media of the day even though it's quite weak (dirt on the sensor). I have uploaded Sweet's video and I added it to the USAC page too. Royalbroil 06:22, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Awesome. Looks good from here! - The Bushranger One ping only 06:23, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Sockpuppet? or just a POV vandal?

User Armyjawan1 displays the same characteristics of Chanakyathegreat and socks, though has not edited the Great Power or Indian Navy articles as his most recent confirmed socks have done. Its a possibility hes not related to Chanakya at all and rather just a POV vandal, but something tells me otherwise. Hes persistently vandalizing the List of active Indian military aircraft‎ with figures he takes out of thin-air to satisfy his POV while the article already provides an authoritative source. Hes made in the region of 35 edits, about a third of those were purely to revert my edits, the rest all amounts to vadalism save for a handfull of edits.

He needs to be dealt with, what would advise if hes not a sock? cheers, and sorry to bother you again. TalkWoe90i 15:32, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
  • No worries. Hmm. Well, when he was listed with the Chanakyasocks at SPI, he came up unrelated. For the vandalising, warnings, escalating if he continues, then culminating with a report at WP:AIV if he doesn't stop, would be the way to go - if he's wikistalking you, perhaps a report at WP:AN/I might be in order? - The Bushranger One ping only 21:53, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice mate. Anyway, the below user is a self admitting sock (see my talk page) of Chanakya who popped up recently causing all the trouble expected of Chanakyas. Created the same duplicate article as before, Future of the Indian Navy which is routinely deleted soon after creation. TalkWoe90i 10:55, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Ambiguous blog

Hello, Bushranger. I see that you blocked Undeadproductions1234, giving the block log reason as a spamusername block, but in the block notice on the user's talk page you gave a softerblock. I wonder which you meant? If you did mean spamusername, you may like to correct the block notice. JamesBWatson (talk) 12:04, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Well, what I meant to do here was to indicate that the username is indeed spammy (hence the block reason), but I believed a soft block with offer of simply creating a new account for non-spammy contributions (WP:AGF or WP:ROPE, one or the other) was appropriate here. However if I shouldn't do that I'll change it. - The Bushranger One ping only 19:18, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

G'day. Removed your Prod from this school. You're right that it smells of advertisement, but it seems like it is actually a real high school (as opposed to the one deleted at AfD, which was a tutoring operation).

I've added a couple of maintenance tags to it as well. Add more if you like. ˜danjel [ talk | contribs ] 15:29, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Hmm. Are you sure it's a high school? "Years 1 to 13" makes me think it's not... - The Bushranger One ping only 22:29, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Yeah. Year 1 (or 1st grade) in NZ is at ~5 years old. Plus half the kids in the photos on the website are definitely high school kids. :-) ˜danjel [ talk | contribs ] 23:00, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Don't know what happened here, but it appears to be a "midnight" move when no one was watching. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 06:21, 11 January 2012 (UTC).

I moved it back - if he does it again, though, better call in another admin as I'll probably be too involved...or, alternatively, AN/I could be pinged at that point. - The Bushranger One ping only 07:53, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
There may be more of an issue of Wikipedia:Tendentious editing involved; reading a past edit history of one of the main participants was particularly [illuminating]. FWiW, a bit of a Napoleonic complex is seemingly involved. Bzuk (talk) 16:27, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
I believe it's time for him to drop the stick and back away from the dead horse. - The Bushranger One ping only 22:21, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

I recently looked at the 1952 film about Lt Col Paul Tibbets and his role in the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima and noted that the article was missing some key components including the plot section. After doing some work, one interesting DYK-type factoid emerged. When initial reviews came in, star Robert Taylor's performance in Above and Beyond was considered the "finest performance of his career to date". Taylor was also proud of his accomplishments in the film and urged MGM to allow him to promote the film on television. Taylor and Paul Tibbets, the pilot of the "Enola Gay" appeared together on Ed Sullivan's Toast of the Town show in order to promote the film, an unusual step at a time when the major Hollywood studios disapproved of its stars appearing on television, which they saw as a threat. (Taylor, a pilot himself since the 1930s and who had served as Navy instructor in the war, had met Tibbets and found that they had much in common.) Although the studio was hesitant about the television appearance, the publicity gained was important to the film's initial success. And this apparently was the first time a motion picture was actively "pitched" on that new upstart, television. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 16:00, 11 January 2012 (UTC).

Pretty nifty! I'll have a look-see. Unfortunatly it doesn't appear to be expanded 5x (yet?). - The Bushranger One ping only 22:21, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Another TCM classic film with some notable firsts, it was based on a story written by 20th Century studio head, Darryl F. Zanuck, under a pen name, features Betty Grable in her first role as "pin up" for the troops and actually had RAF cooperation in the filming leading to the deaths of two 20th Century Fox cinematographers. Reply - I was actually referencing WP:OC#EPONYMOUS, not WP:OC#SHAREDNAMES. Exact quote: "In general, avoid creating categories named after individual people, or groupings of people (such as families or musical groups)." Jeancey (talk) 00:13, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Well, there's quite a few of them at Category:American families, I'm just following the pattern. Also, that's not a valid CSD reason; categories can only be tagged for speedy deletion if they are empty (C1), or meet one of the general criterion, which this does not. - The Bushranger One ping only 00:17, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, my brain is somewhere else right now and can't think much. Can you educate me why blocking 82.45.198.134 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) for 6 months (you mistagged their talk page as indefblock), and where is the legal threat? Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 01:36, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

The legal threat was on AN/I; this diff. I tagged their talk page with the standard NLT tag; I would make it indef but the "don't indef IPs" applied, so I went with "practically indef". - The Bushranger One ping only 04:11, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Forgive my stupidity. (i) [1] Prioryman, your statement that it is 'probably Monckton' is definitely libellous unless you have some form of proof. See WP:BLP. Please remove your statement. To me this sounds reasonably polite. Is "libelous" = "legal"? Why? (ii) Consider this was a genuine legal threat. Why 6 months? That is, how do you see that this is a static IP with one person behind it? Materialscientist (talk) 04:34, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
1. The IP is obviously a sock of User:Mofb, who was blocked for legal threats, unretracted, and from that thread and others on AN/I the repeated use of the term 'your statement is libelous' and such is in fact by consensus opinion a legal threat. 2. I cannot; that is why I only set it for six months instead of the WP:NLT-prescribed indef. If you believe it's inappropriate, though, I have no objection to your retracting it. - The Bushranger One ping only 04:50, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Ok, thanks, my head is getting clearer, and after a glance at WP:NLT I figure that (i) a user should not make comments which might be perceived as a libel (not necessarily clear legal threats), (ii) an admin should clarify what the user actually meant (defamation, legal threat, none of those, etc.) (iii) in case of a threat, an IP should be blocked for as long as it belongs to the offending user. This time is off course tricky to estimate. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 05:06, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 January newsletter

WikiCup 2012 is off to a flying start. At the time of writing, we have 112 contestants; comparable to last year, but slightly fewer than 2010. Signups will remain open for another week, after which time they will be closed for this year. Our currrent far-away leader is Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), due mostly to his work on a slew of good articles about The X-Files; there remain many such articles waiting to be reviewed at good article candidates. Second place is currently held by Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions), whose points come mostly from good articles about television episodes, although good article reviews, did you knows and an article about a baroness round out the score. In third place is Mauritius Jivesh boodhun (submissions), who has scored 200 points for his work on a single featured article, as well as points for work on others, mostly in the area of pop music. In all, nine users have 100 or more points. However, at the other end of the scale, there are still dozens of participants who are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly!

The 64 highest scoring participants will advance to round 2 in a month's time. There, they will be split into eight random groups of eight. The score needed to reach the next round is not at all clear; last year, 8 points guaranteed a place. The year before, 20.

A few participants and their work warrant a mention for achieving "firsts" in this competition.

  • Florida 12george1 (submissions) was the first to score, with his good article review of Illinois v. McArthur.
  • Florida 12george1 (submissions) was also the first to score points for an article, thanks to his work on Hurricane Debby (1982)- now a good article. Tropical storms have featured heavily in the Cup, and good articles currently have a relatively fast turnaround time for reviews.
  • Russia Sp33dyphil (submissions) was the first to score points for a did you know, with Russian submarine K-114 Tula. Military history is another subject which has seen a lot of Cup activity.
  • Russia Sp33dyphil (submissions) is also the first person to successfully claim bonus points. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is now a good article, and was eligible for bonus points because the subject was covered on more than 20 other Wikipedias at the start of the competition. It is fantastic to see bonus points being claimed so early!
  • Byzantine Empire Speciate (submissions) was the first to score points for an In the News entry, with Paedophryne amauensis. The lead image from the article was also used on the main page for a time, and it's certainly eye-catching!
  • Mauritius Jivesh boodhun (submissions) was the first to score points for a featured article, and is, at the moment, the only competitor to claim for one. The article, "Halo" (Beyoncé Knowles song), was also worth double points because of its wide coverage. While this is an article that Jivesh and others have worked on for some time, it is undeniable that he has put considerable work into it this year, pushing it over the edge.

We are yet to see any featured lists, featured topics or good topics, but this is unsurprising; firstly, the nomination processes with each of these can take some time, and, secondly, it can take a considerable amount of time to work content to this level. In a similar vein, we have seen only one featured article. The requirement that content must have been worked on this year to be eligible means that we did not expect to see these at the start of the competition. No points have been claimed for featured portals or pictures, but these are not content types which are often claimed; the former has never made a big impact on the WikiCup, while the latter has not done so since 2009's competition.

A quick rules clarification before the regular notices: If you are concerned that another user is claiming points inappropriately, please contact a judge to take a look at the article. Competitors policing one another can create a bad atmosphere, and may lead to inconsistencies and mistakes. Rest assured that we, the judges, are making an effort to check submissions, but it is possible that we will miss something. On a loosely related note: If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question about deleted pages

Hello Bushranger, I have a question regarding a couple of pages that were deleted. First, I hope I'm doing this correctly: As I understand it, the first step is to contact the administrator to discuss the pages. The two pages are Jack Bergstrand and Brand Velocity. I have been asked to address the issues brought up by the various editors and make changes accordingly. First, in the spirit of full disclosure, I suspect I would be considered a single purpose author; however, I am not employed by the individual or the company. Since I don't have that connection, I feel I was able to objectively review the pages and address the editors' input, so I hope that will help with concerns about conflict of interest. That having been said, I would like to know how best to proceed with our discussion. I would provide you with a summary of how I addressed the issues, but considering I did major surgery to the pages--including rewriting most of the copy and reassigning or deleting references--I wonder if it might be better to have you review the pages first? If you'll let me know which is best (or if there is another option you prefer), that would be great. If you want to review the pages, can you tell me how to show them to you? I've read the documentation but am not sure how to provide a page for viewing without actually re-posting it. I'm looking forward to our discussion. Thank you... correction to question about deleted pages

One of the pages I referred to in the previous message was incorrect. The two pages are Jack Bergstrand and Reinvent Your Enterprise. Sorry about that. Thanks.Bgarofallou (talk) 14:06, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi there. :) As an admin I can view the pages, so no worries there. The Reinvent Your Enterprise page was merged to the author's page back in 2009 as the result of this discussion; last month Jack Bergstrand was deleted as the result of this one. Now, if you think the pages should still exist, there's two options; one is that I can restore a copy of Jack Bergstrand to your userspace for you to further improve to meet the policies the AfD felt were not met; or, alternatively, you can use deletion review to see if the community believes they should be restored. - The Bushranger One ping only 20:39, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Hello...first, thanks for your response. I didn't know those pages were merged in the past, but this makes sense because it seemed to me when I was reviewing them that they would be better together under one entry. I have rewritten the content and reviewed and cleaned up the references according to the AfD for both pages, so I think I'm ready to do an "official" revision of Jacks' page (I'll merge the Reinvent page content into it). If you could restore a copy of the Jack Bergstrand page to my userspace, that would be great. Once I have the updated completed, I'll let you know. Thanks again.Bgarofallou (talk) 21:26, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

about a page...

hi i was wondering why the page KuzzNshazziie was closed at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuzznshazziie , how do is not indicate the significance of the subject? thanks! (92.21.78.214 (talk) 13:52, 4 February 2012 (UTC))

If you're asking how you indicate significance (notability), the best way is a review in a national publication, preferably more than one; in the case of a musician, having a song chart on a nationally notable chart confers notability as well. - The Bushranger One ping only 21:31, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

The bird thing

I thought I should drop you a line personally to clarify some things, instead of continue to cloud the debate at WT:MOS. No one, at any time ever in this debate in 7 years that I know of has ever suggested that capitalization of the "official" common names of bird species is not a widespread practice in both mainstream bird books and ornithology journals. I'm sorry if it has seemed like this unquestionable fact has been at issue; it has never been. What has been at issue in previous debates about WP:BIRDS practice is whether or not this specialist writing practice from specialist publications for specialist readers is appropriate for a general purpose encyclopedia. Most respondents believe that it is not, for a number of reason I won't reiterate here, and your project ignores them. We're all tired of fighting with you about it. What the current MOS proposal is about is "Johnson had a Rock Pigeon but it was eaten by his Ball Python, who choked to death on it, so he instead got a Dog and two Goldfish." Even your own project would not capitalize "rock pigeon" here, in text clearly from a biographical article. That the discussion of how to word MOS properly on this got bogged down in the usual bickering about your project is unfortunate. But the fact remains that even the strongest of the variants of the proposed wording gives you what you want and leaves your project alone. Against my wishes and judgement, I assure you; I make no bones about the fact that I am a strong opponent of your capitalization scheme. But it is 1,000 times more important to me to stop the capitalization of random animals in non-specialist articles as in the Johnson sentence, which is happening all over Wikipedia with wild abandon. The one thing MOS cannot and will not do for WP:BIRDS is blatantly lie about the fact that your caps convention is controversial on Wikipedia. It's easily in the top 10 hottest and longest-running WP controversies of all time. I bear you, your fellow project members and your articles no ill will, I just don't agree with you on your style choice, nor with the way that some members of your project have gamed the system and browbeaten critics into silence over the years. Just because I oppose something you're doing doesn't make you my enemy, nor mean that I can't touch the subject of animal names and MOS without trying to remove your "exception". I've been one of the ones trying to keep it in, because I'd rather have quietude than more strife. — SMcCandlish   Talk⇒〈°⌊°〉 Contribs. 02:18, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the note; I don't see anybody as enemies, sorry if that wasn't clear. I do strongly disagree about it being a "specialist writing practice from specialist publications" though - and "Rock Pigeon" in the example you give would be capitalised. Rock python would not though - birds are (for whatever reason, and I've wondered about the reasons why myself more than once) the only group of species in which the common name is capitalised - but it is always capitalised, nd not just in specialist publications. I do agree though that all the other capitalizations of species are nonsense; the catch is figuring out how not to throw the baby out with the bathwater and not try to use two wrongs to create a right. Of course, if we could figure out how to do that, we'd probably go on to solve world peace the next day, it seems sometimes! :) - The Bushranger One ping only 02:26, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Hate to be argumentative, but "rock pigeon" in this case wouldn't be – your project has many times made it clear that its caps convention should only be used in ornithological articles; that's probably the only reason it's survived this long. And bird name are not always capitalized; various members of your project have publicly admitted that, and detractors of the practice have found lots of evidence of this. It's a very widespread and perhaps growing convention, but it is by no means universal in birding or in ornithology, just very, very common. I think we're just talking past each other on the definition of "specialist publications"; I think you are considering bird field guides and such to be nonspecialist and I'm not. The overwhelming evidence presented in many prior "editions" of this dispute is that near-zero encyclopedias, dictionaries, newspapers, non-bird magazines, general-purpose style guides, and even non-orn.-specialist, general zoological and science journals that sometimes publish orn. articles, including the world's most prestigious, Nature and Science, capitalize the common names of birds even in orn. articles (only one exception has been found in the evidence presented so far in the many versions of the debate I've read). Detractors of the practice here before I got involved have produced reams of proof that the convention is almost completely unknown outside bird-specific publications, and explicitly rejected by many, including general zoological journals.
This is all old news though, and I didn't come here to pick a fight with you, or rehash that stuff. Really, no one is at all questioning that it is effectively the ornithological practice. What is questioned is whether this has any relevance here, at a generalist encyclopedia. That's a long (seven years long!) bitchfest that has little to do with the issue before WT:MOS right now, which is actually trying to carve out a niche for WP:BIRDS "officially" in MOS, so the fighting at least died down a little, without endorsing it and leading to every WikiProject on the system demanding their own pet-peeve exceptions for every style rule there is, and with the primary goal of synching the guidelines and stopping rampant capitalization of things like Guinea Pig and Ball Python. That's really all it boils down to. I don't like the baby at all, but I'm honestly trying to get rid of the bathwater only. I may fight the baby again some day though. >;-) The bath water is poisoning the whole house, though, so it has to go immediately. Heh. — SMcCandlish   Talk⇒〈°⌊°〉 Contribs. 03:45, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Latter day Saints

The agents in 'charge' of editing links, history and facts related to Latter day Saints are biased. If someone wants me deleted I am quite sure they are apologist of said and prefer a more favorable account of their beliefs and history. The evidence is clear and this action affirms the obvious 'tending' of the view of the church. This medium should be unbiased as possible and this attack is an obvious effort to eliminate those who hope to show the church and all of its true documented history. Thank you. NPA

If you know anything about me you should know that I'm one of the most civil editors around. And I didn't violate NPA. NPA is a policy that is not meant to be followed blindly, that is why it says it is "a widely accepted standard that all editors should normally follow." And the word 'normally' is piped to WP:IAR and the subjection on commonsense. I see that Malleus also jumped in at the ANI to accuse me of violating NPA, which is a tad bit ironic and I'd say either making a point or even an attack on me. My comments were true and not a violation of NPA unless 'normally' means ignore even the most egregious comments of other editors. Dougweller (talk) 06:25, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

You have difficulty with English---"nasty piece of work", the distinction between adverbs and commands ("normally", "ignore ... editors")---self-understanding ("I'm one of the most civil editors around") and civility, here and at ANI. Why not silence yourself when you have nothing good to say?  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 12:45, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

ACG Strathallan being made live

Hello would like to revisit the topic of making the article User:Victor997/ACG Strathallan written by Victor997 live. I have now added one more reference from an external source website. Please indicate what other information may be needed. We simply need a basic wireframe up ASAP before we can start expanding. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.7.149.172 (talkcontribs) 21:34, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Hmm. To be completely honest with you, I don't believe the article is ready to be restored to articlespace yet - it is still far too dependent on primary sources that don't establish how the school is notable. I'd also suggest trimming out the bulleted list of deans - that seems a little too much, just saying there are "six deans for the various years" should be sufficent. Anyway, if you can find additional reliable secondary sources for information about the school, that would help. - The Bushranger One ping only 21:51, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

I think the Afd at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/ACG English school was probably a little harsh on ACG Strathallan, ACG Senior College, and ACG Parnell College, which are private secondary or comprehensive schools fully recognised as part of the New Zealand education system, but which were lumped in with English language schools run by the same company. This is not a criticism of your close of the AfD, which fairly reflected the consensus on that page. As a result of this AfD, we are now expecting that these articles meet the full requirements of WP:GNG, but in practice most secondary school articles are held to a lesser standard and are rarely deleted at AfD discussions. I am aware that there have been recent discussions about whether such articles should be exempt from GNG.

My inclination is to allow recreation of these three articles - User:Victor997/ACG Strathallan, User:Therondp/ACG Senior College, and the already recreated ACG Parnell College, with the appreciation that any editor can request a new AfD on any of these articles at any time. Alternatively, we could issue a deletion review for the articles.-gadfium 20:00, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

The discussion at the Village pump seems to have petered out. A simple count of the votes in the straw poll were 4 feeling that secondary schools need to establish notability, and 7 thinking they do not; however some of those 7 people appear to be arguing that the poll is flawed. I would appreciate your further input on whether the articles on these three schools should be reinstated.-gadfium 18:50, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear The Bushranger,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at [email protected] (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

CfD closure of Category:Mao Zedong family

Hi Bushranger, please will you reconsider your closure of the cfD discussion on Category:Mao Zedong family?

I think I understand why you acted as you did, and am sure that it was done in the utmost good faith, but for all that this seems to me to be a mistake. I think that a WP:SNOW close when only 3 !votes had been cast is stretching the definition of snow well beyond its elastic limit. When only 3 !votes have been cast and the discussion has been open for only 3 days out the usual minimum of 7 days, it seems to me to be far too soon say that it meets the WP:SNOW test: that the "issue does not have a snowball's chance in hell of being accepted".

WP:SNOW says that The snowball clause is designed to prevent editors from getting tangled up in long, mind-numbing, bureaucratic discussions over things that are foregone conclusions from the start. However, in this case, the discussion was neither long nor mind-numbing nor bureaucratic. It seems to me that despite your good intentions, the effect of your closure was to cast a supervote, and prevent any other editor from making a case for treating that category as an exception to the convention of Category:Families.

Personally, I would oppose the suggested rename, and would hope that the eventual outcome would be the same as your closure. But I have seen too many cases where a SNOW closure without any snow has caused a huge amount of meta-drama and resentment, which is much more disruptive than just letting the discussion run.

In this case, I think that the most likely outcome of not closing early was that there would be few more "keep" !votes over the next few days, followed by an uncontroversial closure. That seems to me to be much better than having the nominator (and any other interested editors) feel that they were unreasonably denied the chance to test consensus.

Please will you reopen the discussion? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 11:13, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Well, I figured that the result is a foregone conclusion, hence the snow. But I have no problem with reopening it - consider it done. :) - The Bushranger One ping only 12:38, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
I very much doubt that it will change the outcome, but nor can I see any benefit in an early closure.
Thanks for being so open to another view, and for acting on it so promptly. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:52, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Cfd closures

I do not see how you can be seen as impartial in closing the cfds on Old West Downs and Old Stoics when you have a partisan position favouring one side of the argument. Surely it would be better for you to leave the closing of such cfds to someone who is uninvolved? Moonraker (talk) 17:26, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

I think that Moonraker has a point here. Given the balance of opinion in those discussions, I don't see any way that another closer could weighed the consensus to reach a different conclusion, and I don't read Moonraker's comments as suggesting that your involvement affected the outcome. But I think that in future it would be better to avoid any concerns over impartiality. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:28, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

PS I see that Moonraker has selectively notified other editors of his post here: see [2], [3], [4]. It is a pity that Moonraker did not have the courtesy to alert you to of this.

In each case the notice was posted to an editor who shares at least some of Moonraker's substantive views on these categories, and Moonraker appears to have failed to notice the irony of canvassing Ephebi immediately below a warning to Ephebi about canvassing. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:37, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Hm, I suppose I can see the point here; I didn't consider it a problem as there was a clear consensus, but it's probably best to avoid any and all appearance of any potential conflict of interest. In the future I'll let others handle closures of CfDs of this type in all cases. - The Bushranger One ping only 22:24, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
I think this old fooian case is an unfortunate one. I would like to defend the retention of the old fooian format for 10-20 of major public schools, but not minor ones or grammar schools. I am an Old Salopian, for which WPO has a List of Old Salopians. For Stowe, the list is still in the article. Perhaps the relevant articles need to be created, if only as redirects. Hello, thank you for helping recently with a vandal. You said on the administrators' notice board to report incidents to WP:AIV. How do I do that? Many thanks (and sorry if this is the wrong place to ask) 109.152.27.112 (talk) 21:43, 17 February 2012 (UTC) (I'm registering with an account now)

No problem, and glad to help out. When you find a vandalising IP, you go to WP:AIV, and click 'edit' on the "User-reported" section. You then make the report using the following format:
* {{IPvandal|IP address}} reason for report ~~~~
replacing "IP address" with the address in question, and "reason for report" with a brief description of the vandalism, with diffs. An admin will come along shortly to address the problem. Hope this helps! - The Bushranger One ping only 21:46, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

  • [7] Mmm, seems determined to keep pushing it. For info, the incident he refers to was when I removed the edits of a sock puppeteer who had a habit of wikifiddling information, which he sometimes mixed with legitimate edits. I have explained this at length more than once [8], instead he persists with the rather ridiculous bad faith accusation that I'm trying to suppress the involvement of the USAF in the incident as well as pursuing a "vendetta" for clearing up after a disruptive editor. BK Racing

Thank you for the help with the BK Racing logo. I was not sure how to add all the copyright material but I did see that they changed their logo so I thought it was appropriate to add.

Glad to help. If you look at the way the logo is currently formatted as uploaded to Wikipedia, that's how the information needs to be done. You can't upload corporate images to Commons, unforutnatly. - The Bushranger One ping only 21:17, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

Topic Ban

It may be a good idea to start a new section on the topic ban for NYyankies58, instead of having it appended to a complaint on a seperate editor. Dominus Vobisdu (talk) 12:22, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Good point; looks like somebody else beat me to it though. - The Bushranger One ping only 20:32, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

ANI advice

Hey Bushranger, I can use your advice. This ANI thread about Honorsteem, "Deleting (references to) moved comments on Talk:Daniel Pipes", is going nowhere since it's way up the page and the content no longer matches the title. Can I copy and paste the relevant sections to a new thread? (Haha, in a manner resembling the original complaint!) Or should I start a new thread altogether? Thanks, Drmies (talk) 01:43, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

I've moved it down to the bottom and added a subheading for the cleanstart issue - that should help, I think? - The Bushranger One ping only 01:46, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
Good call. Thanks. Man, I almost feel like one of those crusaders, POV warriors, whatever, and I don't really like it, but I do want some answers, from Honorsteem and from some people with years of experience and weight. Drmies (talk) 02:32, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Might you assist with sourcing

...to THIS article? With hope that this is not the case, it seems the AFD nominator may not have not done as thorough a search for sources as WP:BEFORE encourages. Thanks, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 23:03, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

  • A quick Google turns up [9] and [10] among quite a few others. Looks like WP:BEFORE wasn't followed. - The Bushranger One ping only 23:08, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
    • I am inclined to agree. As the nominator has now been indef-blocked for pushing his POV and personal agenda even after being repeatedly instructed to not do so, would it be proper to procedurally close the remaining open AFDs he created as a disruptive abuse of process? Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 23:21, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
      • I'm not sure about that one, to be honest. I'd be inclined to say "yes" though. - The Bushranger One ping only 23:22, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
        • I believe the continued existance of poorly thought and rather WP:POINTY nominations of GLBT articles would act to continue disvision and animus where none should exist. And more, thay all seem to fail WP:DEL#REASON. Since he is now indef-blocked for pushing a personal agenda through his editing, it could be seen that the negative effect of his nominations could actually hurt any chances of having the block lifted anytime soon. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 23:49, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Revisions to deleted page

Hi Bushranger, I have made revisions to the page you posted to my userspace for Jack Bergstrand. I believe it's ready for a review. I rolled in the pertinent information from his book page (so that one will go away) as recommended, scrubbed the marketing speak, and really scrubbed the references. Can you take a look at it or advise as to next steps? I appreciate your guidance throughout on this. Thanks! Bgarofallou (talk) 14:09, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

It looks much better now; however, the 'Author and Speaker' section has, I think too much information from the book. I've trimmed it to what I believe to be a more suitable size; I'd suggest asking one more admin to take a look as well - The ed17 (talk · contribs) or Drmies (talk · contribs) might be willing to take a look - before moving it back to mainspace. It looks good though! - The Bushranger One ping only 20:46, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Koozie

I have to admit I never heard that term before, but I'm not into beer. Random looks at google suggest the term was in the public domain a long time ago. Here's one site with a history of sorts:[11]Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 01:18, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

I'm not into beer either, but I have heard the term (likely due to hanging round race fans!). Looks like their leg to stand on was even more wooden than I thought - I'll get the hacksaw! - The Bushranger One ping only 01:20, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
I wouldn't rule out that someone might have tried to trademark it. Look at the Frisbee, for example, which supposedly was named for a pie tin made by the Frisbie Bakery or some such. But it's fairly clear that the term koozie is in pretty wide use. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 01:39, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Template:Infobox Champ Car driver

Hi The Bushranger. Regarding the changes you made to some of the parameter names in {{Infobox Champ Car driver}} (e.g. "Wins" --> "Champ_Wins") - the reason that {{Infobox NASCAR driver}} includes the series name as part of the parameter names is that that infobox can contain data for mutiple different series (Cup, Busch, Truck, Corona, etc). Since the Champ Car driver infobox only contains data for one series, it's not really necessary to include the series name as part of the parameter name (unless you have a plan to expand the infobox in the future to cover multiple series?) My suggestion would be to remove "Champ" from the parameter names - yes it means you will have to go and re-update the 4(?) infoboxes you have already updated, but it would (mostly) "unbreak" all the ones you haven't updated yet (and would decrease the amount of effort required to update them when you do update them). Since you have undertaken to update all the existing transclusions of the template, it's your call, but that's what I would suggest. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 03:16, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Hmm, that's a good point...I'll give that a whirl. Thanks for the suggestion. :) - The Bushranger One ping only 03:17, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
Hmm. I tried simplifying the params, but they didn't "unbreak" on the ones I hadn't modified yet. Also, now that I think about it more, it might be handy to add additional series later - specifically, the IndyCar series instead of creating a seperate infobox? I think for now I'll change it back - but thanks again for the suggestion. :) - The Bushranger One ping only 03:24, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

February 2012 "This is your only warning. The next time you disrupt Wikipedia, you may be blocked from editing without further notice."

Excuse me? I apologize for that but if I see any one of you just deleting my edit, I will destroy the edit. But since i didn't know that i will be blocked from editing, then I will use a better way. I will '''block the person from editing''' who was removing my edit including you. Is that clear? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ramy A330 (talkcontribs) 09:53, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia does not work that way. - The Bushranger One ping only 09:58, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
Then,Do you think that this is automatically removed? no one removes it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ramy A330 (talkcontribs) 10:01, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
"destroying edits" will result in blocking for disruptive editing and/or edit warring. You cannot "block...person[s] from editing". When there is a dispute about content, instead of edit-warring, you discuss the dispute on the talk page in order to achieve consensus for its inclusion or otherwise. See WP:BRD. - The Bushranger One ping only 10:06, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

I see but what if you wrote disrespectful words such as bad language? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ramy A330 (talkcontribs)
WP:CIVIL covers that. If somebody acts in a consistently uncivil manner, you report it to an administrator with a request to look in to the matter, or, if it's particularly egrerious, to AN/I. In the latter case, especially, though, you must be 100% sure you have an airtight case lest you be hit by a WP:BOOMERANG. - The Bushranger One ping only 18:25, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
Ramy, I suggest that you use the talk pages of articles to explain why the edits that you want to put in the articles are important. Use the talk pages of articles to try to find out what people's objections are. Then try to find a way to meet those objections. My guess is that if you did this, you would probably get your way a lot of the time - but you might end up having to provide citations for both the material, and its importance.--Toddy1 (talk) 19:33, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Category:2012 Formula One race reports

Hi The Bushranger. FYI, Category:2012 Formula One race reports actually was populated for about a day and a half. On February 18, 2012 Australian Grand Prix was changed from a redirect into an article, so I created the category, then 2012 Australian Grand Prix was changed back to a redirect, thereby leaving the category empty. "Carinval" in the US?

The recent move of this category to Category:Carinval in the United States (Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2012 February 18#Category:Carnival of the United States) contains a misspelling, should be "carnival". I was gonna just move it, but didn't see a button anywhere. Think you can move it to the correct spelling? Cheers, Heiro 20:13, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
