Ehm...what's the problem with the edits? I can get references, but they're certainly verifiable. Wotapalaver (talk) 19:18, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

I'll go find em. Just for my own info, do you dispute the edits or do you just insist on references for every edit on certain articles? Wotapalaver (talk) 19:25, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Please make sure you do not revert to an earlier vandalized version, as in [1]. Thanks for vour nandal fighting efforts. The socks are out in force today vandalizing this article. Edison (talk) 15:50, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Note: replied on Edison's talk page that I had noticed, and spent 5-10 minutes cleaning up article afterwards. For the record, the paper clip article still needs work. Tan | 39 15:57, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Nope you didn't miss anything, I didn't see the sig and assumed the candidate answered the question. My fault, though there's a discussion going on at WT:RFA about questions and so on, I made a comment there if you want to know why I said what I did (aside from me being an idiot of course!). RxS (talk) 04:09, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

not trying to vandalize

Hi Tan , I guess this is a liitle more difficult than I knew, I am new here and unfamilliar with the rules etc. I have no intention of Vandalizing wiki. I saw several mentions of the Band STP on other pages. And being familliar with the boston hardcore scene in the 80's was suprised that there was no reference on the STP page. I did not know I would have to make a full page, although I guess i could, with albums released etc. maybe later when I have time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Boldskool (talkcontribs) 15:53, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Edits

Tan, I don't know what you've got against me, but I merely deleted the words "suffered heavier casualties". Does that really warrant a discussion? (Trip Johnson (talk) 17:14, 9 April 2008 (UTC))

I don't have anything against you. Seriously. You aren't just deleting the words, you are changing lots of things and really having ownership problems. Instead of discussing things, you delete my questions on your talk page. Instead of discussing the changing of "Continental Army" to "United States" in the belligerents section, which I totally dont understand (why a link to the current US is better than one to the Continental Army is baffling to me), you just go ahead and do it. Considering the comments that are still on your talk page, I don't think you have a good understanding of the Wikipedia process. Tan | 39 17:16, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Call it a surrender if you wish, but I have no desire to carry out a long, boring and ultimately pointless bashing session. I have, out of the goodness of myself in redemption, put aside our differences, and edited the articles ahead up till the Battle of Bound Brook in this current campaign series, to Continental Army, Militia forces and British Army / Hessian Army where necessary. Since this is your project as such, I'll leave the in-depth details down to yourself. Also, is it okay to have a link such as this United States, it does link back to the Continental Army. Joee Guilas

Firstly, it was tagged as speedy, which I removed. Secondly, the article claims the subject to be a TV personality, a writer, a businessman and a model. It sounnded unlikely to me so I removed the speedy tag, since there was a claim to notability and PRODded as I suspected a hoax. Since you removed the PROD tag, the system worked as it should. Perhaps if sources were cited, the article would not have been tagged for speedy or PRODedin the first place. -- Mattinbgn\talk 04:51, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

That's fine. I didn't mean to sound snappy. Keep up the good work. Tan | 39 04:53, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Comment on ANI

Regarding this comment on the metal discussion on ANI:

I really don't understand why you feel compelled to label this discussion as wikidrama and I don't think it was constructive.

I didn't take this to ANI to be dramatic. I had issued two warnings over the past month and a half and discussed on User talk: Riverpeopleinvasion, User talk:ElisaEXPLOSiON and my talk page before coming to ANI. Rather than being dramatic, I went to ANI seeking guidance/consensus from more experienced admins.

Frankly, I didn't come to Wikipedia to explain to 15 year old kids why suggesting strangers get sodomized with metal is inappropriate. If the admins feel that suggesting such is fine, so be it. I strongly disagree, but we'll leave it there. This place is built on consensus, and this certainly isn't the first thing about Wikipedia I disagree with.

I'm a fairly new admin, and as was noted earlier this week, I have made at least one mistake. You seem to feel bringing my interpretation of common decency to ANI was my second: something else I disagree with.

Toddst1 (talk) 00:12, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Without making my talk page WikiDrama, my point was that you probably could have taken care of this yourself, with a few messages on some talk pages, or just have been bold and removed it yourself. AN/ANI has been full of people complaining about WP:CIVIL lately and I feel that if people would either a) have thicker skin and let some things roll off their back, or b) take care of it themselves, we could concentrate on real issues to make Wikipedia a more robust encyclopedia. I didn't (and don't) have any sort of personal problem with you, and although I meant no actual disrespect, I did mean to say that I thought your post was frivolous. Take it as you will; if you don't think you did anything wrong, then that's fine. My goal here isn't to convince you. It's to point out that too many people are getting caught up in the metaspace of Wikipedia and losing sight of what is actually important. Tan | 39 00:19, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Posting this on ANI likely avoided me making a controversial block. That's exactly the kind of thing it's for. Toddst1 (talk) 01:10, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

The fact that you considered blocking for this is amazing to me. The options were probably to do nothing, ask the user to remove it, or remove it yourself. If you need to post in ANI to avoid blocking people for trivial issues, I guess that's your prerogative. Tan | 39 02:00, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

RFA thanks

Thanks for your support in my RFA, that didn't quite make it and ended at 120/47/13. There was a ton of great advice there, that I'm going to go on. Maybe someday. If not, there are articles to write! Thanks for your support. Lawrence § t/e 17:49, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your comments on my RFA. This is a misnomer. Installment sales are not anything unusual, although maybe only in the USA. I changed it to a speedy, as that is all that is required, not a discussioin about whether a bad name should be deleted or kept. Articles aren't usually called things like Rolling Stones Article, just Rolling Stones, and there is a tag ready made to deal directly with that issue, improper titles. {{db-redirmisnomer}} . --Blechnic (talk) 04:41, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

There was material in the article, however, and typically we can't just delete articles that don't meet the CSD criteria. Also, I appreciate your diligence, but if you review my user page or contributions, I am aware of the conventions of article naming. However, I have no real opinion on this, so whatever you want to do with it is fine. Tan | 39 04:43, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
I have no real opinion on it, either. Still, it seems a lot of time is spent spinning wheels at AfD, when things should just be taken care of. Most of the stuff seems to need discussion, but this one was so obviously just someone getting the name wrong it seemed faster. However, I will, in the future, look at the content and remember to at least put it on the other article's talk page--which I will do with this one now, in case it was valuable. Whatever, someone will hopefully just speedy it. --Blechnic (talk) 04:46, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure you and I have the same goals in mind here. I have no problem with the AfD I started being speedily closed - so if your process works faster, go for it :-) Tan | 39 04:47, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I'm pretty sure we do. It was also a copyright violation.[2] It has been speedied. --Blechnic (talk) 04:50, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Run Devil Run (diambiguation)

Well gee, that's nice of you. I only created the thing 10 minutes ago. Why don't you wait at least 15 minutes? Pdfpdf (talk) 15:44, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Because I don't think another 15 minutes would make it any more useful to Wikipedia. I could be wrong. Make your argument on the AfD page, not here. Tan | 39 15:45, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
Gee, you have an open mind, too!
And pray tell, what leads you to say Make your argument on the AfD page, not here.? I hadn't noticed that I had started making a argument anywhere. Yet.
By-the-way, have you ever heard of Assume Good Faith?
Also, please advise me next time you nominate for Administrator so that I have the opportunity to express my opinion. Pdfpdf (talk) 15:56, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
My nomination for deletion of your recently created page was not meant as a personal attack. What I meant to say above is that you are welcome to participate in the deletion discussion or improve the page - AfD discussions continue for about five days, so you have plenty of time to improve it if you mean to do so. As it is, I don't believe that a disambiguation page is useful for this term, thus I nominated it for deletion. Notice I did not nominate it for speedy deletion. Also note I put a civil, courteous note on your talk page to make you aware of the deletion discussion, but you opted to make your comments here. Your comments here probably won't help others make an educated decision during the deletion discussion.
I'm sorry that you feel slighted by my nomination of this article, but that's just the way the process works. If I am ever up for RfA, you are completely welcome to oppose it based on your feelings here. Tan | 39 16:01, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm pleased to read your reply.
I had formed the opinion that you were a WP:Dick, but your reply has changed my opinion.

Battle of Harlem Heights

We didn't really ask your opinion at the end, but what is your view on the resolution that came about? Also, Trip and I are again having a clash at the Battle of Princeton which I have gotten protected for a few days. I would appreciate your input for either article. (Red4tribe (talk) 22:42, 19 April 2008 (UTC))

Well, I decided I needed to let it go for a few days. Stating opinions here is hard without violating WP:CIVIL; I don't have a whole lot of respect for Trip's method or motivations. I'm going to work on one article at a time - for the time being, Landing at Kip's Bay. Looking at his talk page and interaction with other editors, he clearly isn't an asset to the MilHist wikiproject. Just stay focused on policy, especially WP:V - and don't let him push you around by calling your four historian references "bullshit" while relying totally on his britishbattles.com. Tan | 39 23:49, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

He is a very diffucult person to get along with. You and I aren't the only ones who have found that out. As you know, he was blocked briefly, and so was I becuase of the edit warring. (Red4tribe (talk) 22:56, 20 April 2008 (UTC))

Billy Mitchell

You asked me why I added a link to Billy Mitchell's website. Why isn't that valid? Coke's website links Coke, Apple's links Apple, Honda links Honda, ad infinitum. Can you provide a policy link which invalidates furnishing such a link?Pisomojado (talk) 04:27, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Semicolons

Regarding your reversion to Monica of Hippo:

I believe my changes to have been mostly correct according to semicolon (English usage, point 2). I'll happily agree that the last one should have been left out, though; my default is to always use the serial comma, but I don't see any authorities supporting the proper existence of a 'serial semicolon'. Stationary (talk) 15:10, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Very confusing here. You took a list of commas and changed them to semicolons. I reverted it, and notified you that it was grammatically incorrect. You state here that you don't see any "authorities supporting the proper existence of a 'serial semicolon'", which really supports my position. If anyone who watchlists my talkpage is reading this, can I get a third opinion? Case should be obvious at the top of the history of the page in question. Tan | 39 15:18, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
Actually Tan, Stationary had this right - (didn't explain it well above, but nonetheless, right). Good move asking for a third opinion. Here's an external source: [6]. It's a pdf, go to page two for the example of the proper use of a "serial semi-colon", which Monica of Hippo matches. Cheers, Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 15:44, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, meant page 3 of the pdf. For a serial (list) of things that already contains commas as part of the list (for example a list of city/state, or city/country, it is proper to use a semicolon between the different items. Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 15:46, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
Well, I learned something today. Thanks Keep; apologies to you, Stationary. Keep up the good work. Tan | 39 15:49, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
As pennance, you need to go find at least 5 other examples of incorrect comma usage to switch to serial semicolons. And then whip yourself on the back with cat-o-nine, enough times that you start to enjoy it.  :-) Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 15:53, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
Not a problem. My point would probably have been clearer if I'd linked serial comma and/or called them "Oxford comma"/"Oxford semicolon" since it's not obvious that I was referring to the question of whether there should be a semicolon before the "and" at the end of the list, not whether semicolons were OK in the list at all. Thanks, Keep, for clearing things up. Stationary (talk) 17:04, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

final warning query

Hi there... It's a judgment call, but I added the final warning due to the long history this school IP address has of vandalism. If you look at the history, each time a block expires the vandalism returns and it's blocked again. I often add a final warning ASAP so the next time vandalism comes from this address it can be blocked. IMHO, the quicker these kinds of IPs are re-blocked the better. Note that I'm generally am a big believer in WP:AGF even for anonymous users, but in the case of known long time serial offenders they don't deserve that assumption. --Dfred (talk) 16:26, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Not sure I agree 100% with your rationales there, but fair enough - it's not like I'm going to change your system. Keep up the vigilance. Tan | 39 16:29, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
I'll think about taking a lighter approach in the future. But also remember these IPs are generally Schoolblocked, so registered users can still contribute from them. --Dfred (talk) 16:35, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

(undent)BTW, are there guidelines beyond WP:BITE for dealing with longtime abuse from shared IPs? I'd not ever gotten any feedback before for jumping ahead on the warning continuum for these types of IPs. Any more specific advice? Thanks. --Dfred (talk) 17:06, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

If there is, I haven't found it or been pointed out to it. I don't think what you did was horribly wrong - my issue was that I had already reverted and warned, and you sort of "double warned" the user. Was I not already involved, you could have been justified in your warning. Really, it's no big deal - everyone is going to have their own style. I like to use a slightly friendlier approach, but there are certainly times when AGF is frankly foolish. No need to be blind to obvious vandalism. Tan | 39 17:13, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
There is usually a shorter leash for school IP's that have a history of vandalism. I have no problem with his jumping to a final warning with a school. Admins will generally not block new account creation from these IP's, but will want to block them ASAP when problems arise. Admins are also generally more prone to block a school IP for a little longer than a generic IP.Balloonman (talk) 06:06, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
Good to know, and a lot of the time I agree, but in this particular case I thought he came down a little hard. At any rate, Dfred and I seemed to get along quite well here ;-) Tan | 39 06:10, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

I've deleted this at your request; I think that, once you kindly moved it to userspace, it qualifies as housekeeping to delete the remainder and I tagged it as such. Posted to Accounting4Taste also: 04:50, 25 April 2008 Accounting4Taste (Talk | contribs) deleted "Archive Okina" ‎ (G6: Housekeeping and routine (non-controversial) cleanup: Article mistakenly archived into article space moved to userspace)

if you felt it was inappropriate to have in archive, then why put it in my space? Remove it completely if it is not sufficient for archive (done to clear space to continue the debate on appropriate usage of Hawaiian grammer -- are you familar with this discussion? It is important & that is why I felt It wasn't deemed to be deleted but archieved for others to refer back to.)

This has been pretty well explained on your talk page by myself and another editor. It wasn't inappropriate to "have in archive"; the issue was you created an actual mainspace article for your talk page archive, which isn't the way this works. I simply moved the article to your userspace, then requested that the mainspace one be deleted. I didn't read any of the actual text, which was irrelevant to me. Tan | 39 14:43, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Just to clarify myself. When I said details on my talkpage I meant that I thought you wanted the exact point that the edit war stopped. Not that the discussion should be moved to my talkpage. No, no, I wasn't really assuming anything, just trying to clear it up. Sorry if it was short. I just added a rather unscientific reasoning to the gmail talk page, !voting for the 100Mb increment. Tan | 39 01:34, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for your vote. Sorry about the assumption comment. I take it back. Your math got the about the same answer as mine so it should be correct. A monthly update sounds fine!!!(Again sorry)Xp54321 (talk) 01:38, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Right on. I guess someone is going to fire up an RfC about this, which seems sort of like sandblasting a soupcracker to me, but I'm not going to argue it. No one is arguing in the 500Mb camp anymore, and I think when people see that that would mean two updates per year, they'd agree that an update every month or so would be far more reasonable.
