Re: Maharashtra Barnstar.

Good, I didn't knew Project Maharashtra did not have a barnstar of itself yet. Good that you noticed and took lead to create one. How about replacing the saffron flag with seal of Government of Maharashtra? I know most of us relate ourself to Maratha Empire for historical background and the flag was of Hindavi swaraj. But not all Maharashtrians will like it I guess. See this image of seal of Maharashtra. Similarly WikiProject India has it's own barnstar of tricolor but in that case it works good as flag of India relates to all Indian. I fear people might not relate the same with the Maratha Empire flag. What are your thoughts? --gppande «talk» 13:00, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

your request

Hi, i saw your message here, and see that you need a message sent to members of a specific WikiProject. My bot is not approved to deliver messages but because its not a huge list of people i can do it manually using AWB and it should not take long. It would be much quicker than you doing it by hand one page at a time. Let me know if you would like me to proceed Printer222 (talk) 04:51, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Sorry it's taken a while. I had it all set up but then i got distracted with real life. Its coming now.
Your most welcome, its not a problem. Thank you.

Message from Suyogaerospace

I have created a Barnister for Maharashtra potral it can be found over here

Questions

1. Promotion to A-class status. Someone would need to nominate the article to go through an A-class review: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Military_history/Review#A-Class_review 2. If they have only one or two references, personally, I would not promote them. But check the criteria for B-class; I may not be correct. Happy editing!! Buckshot06(prof) 04:35, 9 July 2008 (UTC) 3. Response. Why don't you list the articles here and we can go through them together? Buckshot06(prof) 05:15, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Take care :) -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 10:45, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

I did see that you actually changed the formatting and as a result the inter-wiki links were not linked any more. That's why I reverted. Please note that, when it is a Wiki entry, the link will have [[]], for example, [[User talk:Suyogaerospace]]. Thanks. Shovon (talk) 17:44, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi, please refer to this. You will see that as a result of your edits, the Internal links such as Field Marshal, MC etc. became [Field Marshal (India)|Field Marshal] & [Military Cross|MC] respectively. Likewise, all the other wiki links were also gone. I believe this makes it clear. If not, please leave me a message. Thanks. Shovon (talk) 08:03, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
Hi, please do not apologise. After all, we are all humans and therefore it happens. I saw your quote. I believe that it goes on to add "...although some of them in recent times have resembled the latter." Of course, it is cited and there won't be any problems in adding this. I was just going through the memorable quotes of Sam Bahadur, and I think that the article needs a bit of expansion. Please feel free to expand it. You may perform Google News Search of "Sam Manekshaw" and will get enough quotes. But do not classify them under trivia, rather put them under "Famous Quotations" or something like that. If I can be of any help, do message or mail me. Thanks. Shovon (talk) 16:08, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

India

Hi! I saw your signature in Wikipedia:Changing username: your request is just below mine. I'm Italian, but I live in India, your country (in Kerala, but I know Maharastra also, from Mumbai to Kolhapur, to Tarkarly). Nice to wiki-meet you! :-) --Roberto Mura it (talk) 12:22, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Wow! So you know also a bit Italian :-) Think, I'm here in Trivandrum to study geography! But also to learn about a different culture (and, why not, "indian" english ;-)). About your food, I like very much chappati, I tasted in Mumbai for the first time, with a lot of sauces. About your languages, I hope, in future, to have more free time to learn Hindi, one of my favorite languages; here, I had to learn Malayalam alphabet (so strange!!), to be able to read road signals. About my "wikipedian life", I write expecially in Italian, in the astronomical project (and here from Kerala I can enjoy also near all the southern hemisphere!). Enjoy, my friend, "wiki"see you soon! --Roberto Mura it (talk) 14:33, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Of course, if I will go to Mumbai, I'll tell you before. Now, I think to stay here, to study (if I had more time...haha). In future, why not? Yes, I heard about the difficult to learl southern Indian languages, but, I saw, the difficult is in particular in pronunciation: grammar in spoken languages is very elementary, no conjugations, no pronouns, only a declension. take care! Bye! --Roberto Mura (talk) 15:04, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
I have been here since March 2007, so I saw this and last monsoon. Your rain? Is like our Italian november! Not more. :-) I have only a simple e-mail address, rigilkent84(at)hotmail.com (about stars again... Rigil Kentaurus). Is it enaugh to comunicate? ;-) Ah, thank you for this site! I'll enjoy it in my free time, of course. Bye! --Roberto Segnali all'Indiano 15:37, 14 July 2008 (UTC) (My Italian signature, adapted for en.wiki)
I see! Yes, our cultures is very different, but I think all cultures are good, only if we keep them with moderation. :-) I'll add your contact. Now I've to solve a problem in it.wiki, my e-mail account is tempested of messages (bad thing to be an admin ;-)) See you soon! Bye! --Roberto Segnali all'Indiano 16:14, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes you're right, sorry: in it.wiki (I don't know here) there is a mailing list for admins; when we have to decide about a particular type of vandalism (particularly subdolous) we use this mailing list, and sometime is very very difficult to follow it, because sometime you can get 10-20 e-mails per minute! :-S A nightmare, really! Bye! --Roberto Segnali all'Indiano 17:08, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Adminship

Hi! You asked me about adminship. There is no objective "eligibility" criteria. It comes through maturity and experience and respect. To be an administrator, you need to know the workings of wikipedia very well. (AFD, RFA, and so on). It would help you a great deal if you could get one or two articles featured. The community loves FA writers and holds them to great respect. And you would need to maintain calm and cool in times of crises, so you need to show evidence of that. First look at adminship in about six to eight month's time, and then look further. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:54, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Its adminship > bureaucratship > stewardship in user rights. But stewards have access across all wikimedia projects unlike an admin and bureaucrat. =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:24, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
See Wikipedia:Userrights =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:25, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
I suggest you not worry about it for now. It's too early to tell. You should look to improve and help out Wikipedia first. Adminship is a natural progression for hard working individuals. So, I wish you luck. =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:06, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Mumbai Fire Brigade Logo Enhanced.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Mumbai Fire Brigade Logo Enhanced.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 06:25, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Adminship

If adminship is what you are looking for then here are some pointers:

  • Get three articles up to featured status. The first one will be a challenge for you, but subsequent nominations would be easier.
  • Contribute images and diagrams if you can.
  • Know the licensing criteria inside out: GFDL, creative commons, fair use etc
  • Know when to use image file types (PNG, GIF, SVG, JPEG)
  • Spread your edit count across the wiki namespaces (article, article talk, template, wikipedia, wikipedia talk, template talk, user talk)
  • Simplify your signature. The simpler the better. It looks very odd on a Linux PC.
  • Participate on RFA. You need not support/oppose. Comments are good enough
  • Participate on xFD
  • An edit count of 3000 is considered to be a safe value.
  • Help out in stub classification, template creation and other such stuff.
  • Regularly contribute to the Village Pump
  • Take part in mediation disputes, lend opinion there.
  • Help root out vandalism by making regular partrols.

Its more difficult these days to get adminship, but by having the above on your CV, you can sail through without opposes. Good luck. =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:12, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

You need not address anyone on WP as sir. :) As I said, all these comes with experience. You need not be actively involved with each of the above, but some amount of experience is needed in these departments is needed. As far as images are concerned, be cautious when uploading logos. Your personal images and drawing carry more weight. It helps. And I will help you out with the Police and Fire Brigade if I have the time. PS you should work on spellings. Use Firefox to help you. =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:39, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Non wiki chat

Hi! This is something not really related to wikipedia. Since you mentioned that you would be pursuing EXTC, would you be interested in learning about amateur radio? It would be a useful addition to you course, and also has wide scope in marine and aircraft communications. Take a look at the article Amateur radio in India that I wrote over the last four days. =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:09, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Yes I have given the exam, but have yet to get my licence and call sign. If you want to be an amateur radio operator, you have to act fast. Classes began in the first week of July. Let me know. =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:36, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
I've sent you an email on the same. =Nichalp «Talk»=
No I'm not a nut. I want to promote amateur radio in India, and this is one of the best forums to do so. Writing in four days is not a problem if you have good sources. Once you get experience writing featured articles, it becomes easy. I plan to list it on FAC tonight. =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:53, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

If you have any interesting information that you wish the world to know of, then you can list a one line hook on DYK. See my user page for examples. Criteria:
  1. The article and the hook should be referenced by a credible source.
  2. Article should be new: ie. less than 5 days old OR an old article expanded 5 fold in the past 5 days.
  3. Content should have around 1500 words

Incidentally, if you're keen to keep your assessing skills honed, we are currently very short of reviewers for Milhist A-Class reviews. Broadly, the five A-Class criteria are just beefed up versions of the B-Class criteria and anyone with B-Class experience should have no trouble with them. Also, as a reminder, in the wide-ranging A-Class review, it is not necessary to comment on all five criteria: if you're short of time, you can simply focus on the aspects that interest you most (sources, comprehensiveness, prose, graphic content or whatever). You can track which articles are up for A-Class using this template: {{WPMILHIST A-Class Review alerts}}

MilHist coordinator election

Hi Suyogaerospace

I have been a coordinator 3 times and have been editing wikipedia for more than 2 years. I'm glad you accepted my suggestion to organize your wikitime. I did that myself. However, the problem with running for coordinator is , that it means you get involved into unplanned extra work because you have also a modell function. Taken your current state of getting rid of an unhealthy addiction, I strongly urge you not to step so close to the border of getting addicted again. You need some time to get along with your schedule. If after half a year you are well established, then I have no doubts supporting you as a coordinator. So let me make a different proposal. Currently, you are editing history articles and have no background on that topic other than what you read somewhere and learned at school. What if you tried to become more professional on that topic and take a few courses in history during your free semester. This helps you to become a better wikipedia editor and thus achieve better results in less time and you can learn a lot about presenting yourself and your conclusions. An issue that is strongly emphasized for history students, but less so for engeneering students. However, after university such a know-how gives you a cutting edge in any discussion(and presentaions), plus you can show an employer that you didn't waste your studying time and you spent your time organized, doing something you like to do. Greetings Wandalstouring (talk) 16:03, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Re: Coordinates

  1. My camera does not have auto GPS tagging.
  2. I have a GPS device with me, and usually take it along when clicking photos. If I do not carry it around, I use the Google solutions.
  3. Now I wish I could use Google Earth, but it has issues on Linux with my Graphics Card, so I use Google Maps instead. I use the Link button on Google Maps to determine to coordinates. You can also use other methods of sourcing the coordinates. See commons:Commons:Geocoding for other workarounds.
  4. For altitude, I use http://topocoding.com after getting the lat & long
  5. I don't use the upload form when uploading, I use my batch script to do that. My script also embeds the GPS coordinates as Exif data, so that Google Earth/Maps can pick it up and display it.
  6. Finally, the GPS coordinates are for the location of the camera position, not the location of the subject. You must also ideally supply the heading (ie N, S, E, W etc (compass points)) along with the coordinates.

Project news
  • Following a lengthy discussion, three new coordinators – EyeSerene, Maralia and the_ed17 - have been coopted. The purpose of the appointments is partly to fill the place left by the retirement of TomStar81 and partly to provide increased/improved coordinator capacity to cover existing coordinator absences and to help with upcoming major projects. As a reminder, coordinators are merely editors who have committed to go the extra mile for the project and that there are very few processes that require coordinator input. Specifically these are closing A-Class reviews, and endorsing two project award nominations. Any editors who wish to help with the nitty-gritty of this busy project (cross-posting A-Class review, peer review and featured article candidate alerts; responding to member questions and queries, helping with drives) are positively encouraged to do so.
  • A workshop has been set up to redesign and improve the newsletter. In our recent competition, a new name was chosen – The Bugle. All editors are welcome to participate, especially those with graphic and design skills!
  • Administrator and Milhist coordinator, Nick Dowling, has changed his user name to Nick-D.

It should be really a shame for us, that on the 'Astronaut' page, of the top 5 indigenous space-faring countries {NASA, RKA, ESA, CNSA, ISRO}, local translations of the word have been described somewhere in article (astronaut, cosmonaut, spationaut, taikonaut) except indian on (AntariksaYatri/Gaganaut).
I added 'Gaganaut' neologism in wikitionary, and added it in 'Astronaut's 'Other Terms' almost more than five times, but each time was reverted and warned to blocked. Hope your help.
Also I've edited a bit in Asian Space Race, for which I need support if later it is reverted.

Obviously not :-D --GPPande talk! 11:17, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Don't get into these nasty things yaar. These things are not good. Edit war can bring about blocks. I would advice stay away from these bad things as much as you can. --GPPande talk! 06:57, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
That is a good pic. Sure, if you have good pics do upload on Wikimedia commons. This way we can improve Maratha empire related articles. --GPPande talk! 08:16, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
