Its OK, I can handle the screenshot. In fact, I am thinking of an alternate presentation in the article. Unfortunately, the sshot I visualized does not fit into the new format. I have to rethink the screenshot as well. May be this will be a chance to show off my window clippings skill. :p Sorry for bothering, though. About the blog link, it detailed Microsoft's plans for a Master Data Management offering. But it was not clear whether it will ship as a different product (or any inkling of the final name) or will the functionality be bundled into SharePoint. But it mentioned codenames of first two iterations (which the author collectively referred to as Microsoft MDM). Windows Media Player[edit]

Just because it was called "Media Player" instead of "windows media player" does NOT mean my addition was irrelevant or was incorrect. And no the name Windows Media Player was not introduced with Windows Me regardless of what you think as the name was infact introduced as early as Windows 98. And when I say Windows 98, I'm implying that the media player Included with the operating system infact title's the program as "Windows Media Player both in the application title and in the "about" section. I at this moment have not checked to see if this is so with the Media Player included with Windows 95 but I'd be more than happy to check. Criticism of Windows Vista[edit]

Per WP:PROT, you shouldn't fully protect articles that you are actively editing, and per WP:ROLLBACK, you shouldn't use rollback in a content dispute. It's a fairly similar situation to what we dealt with last year on the Vista articles around criticism, quality of citations, and inline comparisons with other operating systems. This time it's a little different because we have a self-described security expert (which appears to really be the case) who's adding a lot of this information, often without citations at all, or the text doesn't match the given citations, or he's citing his own blog. I've been accused of being a Mac fanboy because I'm removing the text -- I'm sure you'll see the irony in that. :-) ... but there is some value to the content, it just need some work. -/- Warren 16:54, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This showed up on my watchlist for some reason. Sorry to butt in, but in the interests of saving time: I'm the "self-described security expert". User:AlistairMcMillan straightened me out. I may not budge for "I have 10x as many edits as you", but I can read a consensus clearly. The self-cite, which I did to make a point, was spectacularly ill-considered given WP politics. Alizée image[edit]

Wow, great find. Now we can remove the baldness from the article (hopefully). :)

But, the image looks a bit over exposed. Probably this one would look better when cropped and slightly retouched (red eye reduction et al). She is also in a more natural pose in this. The only caveat - the chick in the front is in focus, not her.

Help needed...[edit]

Hi, this user, User:Pyaremohan contribs, is adding warning messages to user pages without any reason... What should be done...? His edit counts are just 4, of which three edits are to warn me of vandalism twice (without any reason) and another person once... I suspect some sort of "sock puppetry" here... Yes the lists I started are taking a while but I'll get there. I've only read two of those five pillars on how to make a great article as I hate reading instructions but I'll eventually read them. I'm picking stuff up gradually like the stuff you showed me, and people putting in 'metropolitan area|city name' which was handy so I do that now.

All in all things are going pretty good. Cheers. :)

Comments for Windows PowerShell[edit]

Hey Soum! Here's my thoughts on the revised PowerShell article....

- The lead needs a couple of additional references to cover some of the non-obvious & forward-looking statements like Microsoft's plans to incorporate PS as the back-end for future management tools. I know I've heard that before on one of the blogs or a Channel 9 interview, but it'd be good to link that up.

- Acronyms in the lead section... I try to avoid them whenever possible. :) I tend to approach it like this: If a term is only used once, I use the full expansion ("command-line interface") with a wikilink to the article, but I don't define the acronym (CLI). If a term is used twice, I'll use the full expansion. If it's used more than twice, then I'll put the aconym in brackets and use that. We're tech people, so yeah, it's easy to get caught up in the alphabet soup we all seem to love so much, but it's good to avoid it in the lead section to make it easier for people who are very new to the subject.

- I feel like the examples would really help make the text more understandable if they were integrated with the text, instead of (or inaddition to) being in their own section at the bottom.

- Using the full citation format would be good... yeah, boring work I know. :)

- The part in the Background section talking about cscript's deficiencies will need a citation so that readers interested in understanding why cscript has been a problem can get further information on that topic.

- There's still too many external links. It's a useful list, but surely there's a web site out there that can cover this better than us, and we could link to them instead?

  1. The background section was more or less copied from the previous version of the article. The lack of citations is due to inheritance. :D I will try to find some links though. (I myself am in doubt about some claims, especially pertaining to lack of documentation).

Thank you, Soumyasch, for the compliment and encouragement you gave me on my talk page, and especially for the idea of changing my username. I didn't realize it would be a good idea, or that I could do it. Since my mnemonic for "021317" is "Oh, to unfree one's heaven!", I've decided to ask for "Unfree".

(At the top of your talk page, you mention "the project", but not which one it is; I'm sure I'll find out soon!)

I assume, by the name of the places you mention, that you're in India, a long way from my home in Miami, Florida, U.S.A. I've always been fascinated by and fond of India. In 1972, I went there, as one "premi," among thousands, of Guru Maharaj-ji, to celebrate his 13th birthday anniversary. It was a huge celebration. Five "jumbo jets" (Boeing 747s) were chartered just to carry visitors from the US, and several more for other countries. By chance, I was on one of the earliest planes to arrive and the last to leave, so I spent about six weeks there, including two or three in New Delhi and the rest in and around Hardiwar. It was marvelous, despite the poor sanitation at the guru's ashram, which made lots of people sick for a while with dysentery. I became a volunteer amateur pharmacist specializing in one pill, Metronidazole, which, needless to say, was (temporarily) my favorite drug.  ;-)

In New Delhi, we stayed in an ashram in the Punjabi Bagh neighborhood. I witnessed an amazing wedding, and had a delightful breakfast in the home of some nice people I met outside the ashram. We woke every morning to the crowing of roosters and Islamic calls to prayer. I thought it was wonderful, how so many diverse religions, languages, cultures, and personalities there were, all jumbled together in the big city!

Later, people asked me whether I found India's poverty depressing; I found it moving, a bit overwhelming, but also inspiring. I found poverty oppressive in other countries, such as Mexico and Morocco, where I couldn't stop thinking "Why don't the government or the people do something about this?", but in India, it seemed ancient, solid, and permanent, yet softened by immense compassion everywhere. I found no resentment of the poor, and much personal daily charity. It made me love philanthropy and inclined me to goodness and goodwill.

A maharaja once proposed to my mother, and I've often wished she'd married him, but he was already married to one woman. I forget his name at the moment, but his son is Narendra Singh of Sarila, whom I met a few times in New York and once at his embassy in Madrid, and who has written a book called _In the Shadow of the Great Game_ (I think), in which he says he was the aide-de-camp of Lord Mountbatten at the time when the British wanted to partition India, but for appearance's sake, wanted Jinnah to claim it as his idea. I haven't read the book, but I did see his letter to the _Times of India_, which stirred up a storm of controversy, having revealed important political secrets kept for sixty years. He was the ambassador to Spain, France, Switzerland, and perhaps other countries, and retired as the CEO of Nestle's of India to become its chairman emeritus, if I recall correctly. I've often wondered what his palace is like. When I was in New Delhi, I went to the office of some cartographic agency to find Sarila, but they told me it didn't exist, and I believed them. Oh, well. It was so long ago!

I'm delighted to hear that India is prospering these days, and always saddened to hear any bad news about it.

I majored in math in college, but despite getting straight A's in calculus and analytic geometry, I never felt I quite grasped it. I repeated it at another college one summer and got A's again, but still felt lost. I never did finish differential equations; I dropped out.

In 1971, I read in a newspaper that 30,000 jobs would arise in the new field of computer programming, so I went to school for that, but it's a long story. After a year and a half, I gave up (despite excelling at school) and decided to study piano technology (including piano tuning) instead, a wise decision at the time. Thanks for the response. I should have realized this page is read by newcomers as well, so should have explained it properly. Anyways, "the project" refers to the entire wikipedia. Here, various informal (and topical) projects (called WikiProjects) are active which aim to bring articles related to the topic under its banner. The WikiProject then becomes the main (but not the sole) maintainer of the article. In WikiProject speak, the "project" (with quotes) refer to the mother of all WikiProjects - Wikipedia itself.
Your account of your visit is most entertaining and not to say, informative as anything. I didn't know some things myself. I have currently completed my graduation, and am preparing for higher studies. I am in talks with profs at MIT, lets hope everything falls into place. Anyways, see you around. Here is my answers to your questions:

1. What sysop chores do you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Wikipedia backlog and Category:Administrative backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list. I would like to help out with everything, but I don't think I would do a lot in WP:PROD though.

2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any with which you are particularly pleased, and why? Well I've only created one article, and I think it needs to be expanded. I revert a lot of vandalism and once in a while I try to welcome new users, and recently I've started to tag articles for issues like the article not having any references, I'm also trying to help categorize articles.

3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future? I was in a conflict about Criticism of Windows Vista because I thought it was against WP:NPOV, but I understand why they have the article now. If I ended up getting in a conflict again I would ask fellow editors what they think about the situation and then try to reason with the editor I was in a conflict with.

My response to the CSD test:

  • Halo 3 trailier - I would delete it per CSD A1, because it's one sentence that doesn't explain anything about the Halo 3 trailer itself.
  • Union Milllwright - I would delete it per CSD A3, because it only consists of links elsewhere.
  • Webs - I would delete it either per CSD G3 or CSD G11, I'm not sure which one fits this best because it sounds like vandalism, and an advertisement for the "webs team".
  • Neil Haverton Smith - I would delete it per CSD A7, because the article doesn't say anything that makes him noteworthy, and I did a Live Search and nothing mentioned his name.
  • Fall Out Boy - I would keep it, because it is a notable band. But the article could go into more detail about the subject.
  • Nathaniel Bar-Jonah - I would keep it, because he was a convicted criminal but I would change the article from:


He was convicted in Dec 2002 of murding a neighborgood child. He made hamburger patties out of his child victim's meat, then invited his mother and neighbors over for a barbecue. Everyone agreed that the hamburgers "We're the best we ever had!"
To:
Nathaniel Bar-Jonah is a convicted child predator that is serving a 130 year prison sentence after repeatedly molesting, torturing, and attempting to murder children. He was also suspected of murdering a child then disposing of the body through cannibalistic ways, but those charges were dropped after the boy's mother said she did not believe Bar-Jonah had killed her son.

The answers are pretty good. But could do with some improvements. For example, the sysop chores answer, you did not pin point any area of interest. While that is good in some sense, admin responsibilities are too vast for one admin to be active in all. That way, it does give a sense that you want the buttons because of the power it gives, and not the responsibility it brings with. As for CSD, if the article mentions any claim to fame for the subject, it passes CSD. Verifying the suitability of the claim is not the job of CSD. So, if the article says some band is notable because it made the first release in year 200x, it passes CSD even if it turns up no web search hits. Do not delete such articles on CSD; rather prod or AFD it. Conversely, it is humanely impossible for admins to fix all salvageable articles. If you think it deserves a chance, but don't have the time to fix it yourself, delete it but make a note of what needs to be done in the deletion summary.
These are general tips. I havent gone through the CSD answers. (I am in a hurry right now). Will be back with an analysis soon. But, in general, they are satisfactory enough. --soum talk 11:32, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FCL & BCL[edit]

G'day. I noticed that you'd reverted the last edit I made on Base Class Library and changed the stub I made, Framework Class Library, into a redirect; which you then reverted back to my version. Your comment was "there is no such thing as FCL, as a separate entity from the BCL". Now, the way I understand it, BCL is just a collection of namespaces, and their classes, within the FCL. So, the FCL article should list all the namespaces and the BCL article should only list the BCL namespaces. Whereas I'm not close to being a professional, I might be wrong. My apologies. I got confused. They r indeed different. But after 1.1 release, the entire class library is informally called BCL, causing the confusion. Also, listing all namespaces would be an overkill. Wiki articles are not to be intended as API documentation. Rather the current format of following up a namespace with a desc is much better. Yes, you're probably right, it's too much to have all the namespaces on the list. All though I think that this view (User:Soumyasch/List of System.* namespaces) isn't really bad. Maybe it's possible to have it within one of those expanding/collapsing thingies, like above. But how do we choose the most important namespaces for the table?
