I was stumbling around when I came here a couple a month ago, but give it some time, you'll get used to it and everthing will be fine. Sovereignty[edit]

Re:

How large is your nation? You say you consider yourself sovereign, but if you feel as if you need the UN's "permission" or "recognition" to be able to consider yourself sovereign or a First Nation, you are already giving up your sovereignty. Rest assured, the larger nations are confident enough of the fact that they were sovereign first, and never surrendered their sovereignty, that they do not need anyone's permission to call themselves "First peoples", and do not have to pretend they are not just to avoid upsetting the occupation government. As for whether or not "First peoples" is "technically" incorrect, I still fail to see how it is so, according to the dictionary definitions of English words like "First" "peoples" or "technically". In the large scale world, recognition of Sovereignty by other Nations would certainly go along ways towards improving things for our people. To that end we have already taken steps to apply to UNPO http://www.unpo.org/ -- for assistance in that regard. The size or the number of people of our nations is not important. We do exist. We have existed for thousands of years and we will continue to exist as a Sovereign Nation. We've been at this struggle for quite some time, and it doesn't help when people use incorrect terminology to describe us, and insist on describing us in a fashion that doesn't assist us with these efforts to achieve recognition.

Suggestions for more articles[edit]

Uh, not that I want to pawn work off on you, but like you said someone who doesn't know anything about a people shouldn't be writing articles about them. Which is why I stayed away from defining Cowichan beyond delineating its disambiguation page and various potential meanings and uses/articles named with it (e.g. electoral districts); I'm not sure there should even be a Cowichan people, especially after reading your account of the old divisions of the Cowichan Valley peoples; but in practical English-speaking terms all the groups you listed, including yours, are "Cowichan people", so such an article could just be a comment that this is a misnomer referring to the following groups, etc.

Any chance you might want to write up Quamichan, Lamalcha, and all the rest? At least in skeleton/stub form? When you do, remember to try and separate the cultural/ethnic article content from articles describing organizational groupings, and also the need for separate language pages (there is already a Halqemeylem page which incorporates Upriver, Downriver and Straits (not Lower STraits, of course); it may be that three articles are needed there; but certainly Somena and other Cowichan-area peoples should be listed in "See Also" or, if there is such a section, "peoples using this language" or something to that effect. Also, while I've assigned myself the task of writing the Chilcotin War and Fraser Canyon War articles, would you be at all interested in writing a Lamalcha War article?Skookum1 06:17, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

vandalism[edit]

Hi S. You asked about vandalism. On the whole, the wiki-way is to always assume good faith, which means if there is an innocent explanation for something you should accept it. Change things back, of course, if you think that is better. Sometimes, of course, the problem isn't vandalism, but Point of view. As for the vandalism box, I don't think I've seen it on any pages except user pages, which makes the "is-it-vandalism" question a little easier, since if it's your page, you get to say what is vandalism there. Hey B,

One of the "edits" in questions was in the middle of a blogwar debate, and somebody from "No Treason" who I assume wanted to lash out at me for pointing out (in the blog debate)their admitted connection with the Cult of Scientology, changed the name of my Grandfather from Douglas Williams, to Hank Reardon as a "joke". That doesn't strike me as a POV, especially when they know it's not true. There was another edit that made reference to "The Great Pumpkin" or something... and again, none of these "edits" occured until after I had my little run in with you KKKnow who. I would be more than happy to assume good faith, if the IP of one of the people involved in the "Hank Reardon" edit, was not involved in (simultaneously -- I mean within hours) making jokes about my dead mother and so on, while "editing' in things about my family on the Somena page. And again, none of these vandalism attacks on Somena occured until after I had made the Kate McMillan stub. Much like the Rachel Marsden entry, it would seem for some reason that if you cross such individuals, they and their Amen corner are more than happy to use things like wiki vandalism to "protect" these two women. I dunno. I defer to your advice and will only keep the vandalism box in the discussion section of the Somena entry, and not on the main page. Thanks for your two bits Buckets! Janice Switlo[edit]

I rewrote the article Janice Switlo becase another editor considered it a copyright violation. That is, it was copied from Janice Switlo's web site, and Wikipedia doesn't accept articles that are copied and pasted from other web sites. Please take a look at the article as it now stands and make any changes that seem appropriate, as long as they don't violate anyone's copyright. WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America Newsletter - July '06[edit]

The Indigenous Peoples of North America Portal has been established, as a starting point for those wishing to learn more about the subject, with information and links on a wide variety of issues. It also contains news regarding the continent's various tribes and nations. It's a graphically pleasing site, and everyone is encouraged to check it out.
The project's home page has a new design, featuring tabbed subpages on participants, templates, articles, categories, and the to do list.
The Article Classification lists have been moved to their own subpage due to size. This is a sign of progress in the ongoing work of this project.
The project's talk page template has been updated, along with the classification system, to include the assessment on the talk pages of the articles that have been classified and assessed.
Balance
As the Project reaches its first six months of activity, the great effort all of you have invested in it has turned the vast information available on Indigenous North American topics from a deorganized cumulous into an excellent and easy to consult database. Although much work is still in order, few WikiProjects are able to obtain the amazing results we are proud to show today. To all of you, thank you and congratulations!
The assessment of articles within the scope of the project is still an ongoing process. We need people to help in this who are not contributors to the articles they are assessing. Also, there is the ongoing need for identifying and cataloguing articles that fall within the scope of this project. As of today, nearly 1,500 have been identified within the Project's scope.
