help request[edit]

{{helpme}} I'm trying to get my article published but JBsupreme keeps removing it. It is properly sourced with articles from 3rd party sources. What else should I add?

  • Please remember to sign your messages, by putting ~~~~ at the end.
  • I recommend that you work on some other articles before creating this one - for example, see the 'help out' part in Wikipedia:Community portal. This will help you to learn how Wikipedia works.

{{helpme}} I redid the article in User:Skiguy06880/test. Can someone check it and see why I'm getting my article removed. Thanks--skiguy06880 13:18, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

There was no references section, I added one.

The references are not reliable sources. Myspace should not be used as a reference - anyone can edit it.

For example, I could make an article about myself, saying I was the King of England - and I could edit my myspace page to say this, and use that as a reference. This would not be acceptable. I would have to 'prove' it, by referencing, for example, a BBC News article that covered my coronation.

The reader must be able to verify the information you give. For example, how can you 'prove' to me,as a reader, that this person was raised on the west side of Detroit? That his father was murdered, that he learned piano at age 6, etc etc. You need to give sources such as major newspapers or books. If the facts are not available in such sources, then we cannot assert them to be true on Wikipedia.

{{helpme}} Is this better? User:Skiguy06880/dwele--skiguy06880 13:43, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Better, but not great. I'm not convinced that allmusic is an RS, because it's a blog. It might be. This would help though;

<ref>
{{Cite web
| title = Dwele - news, reviews, biography, video, youtube videos, discography, books, DVDs, concerts, gossip, pictures and tour dates
| accessdate = 2009-05-13
| url = http://www.nme.com/artists/dwele#biography
}}
</ref>

I think that the NME is an RS, and this article looks like it covers most of the facts, I think? The link is http://www.nme.com/artists/dwele#biography

You might be able to find more too - try this google news search.

Cheers,  Chzz  ►  13:49, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

myspace[edit]

{{helpme}} Can I quote the artist on his birthday that he put up on myspace himself? Thanks skiguy06880 15:46, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

In general, we should avoid relying on primary sources, such as "the artist said so himself". For a bit of information as minor as the artist's birthday it's probably not a big problem, but if you can find a secondary source that confirms it, that would be even better. Re: Dwele[edit]

Hello. Sources were found mainly from a Google News search, and also using the bio that you found at the NME site - the bios there are syndicated from The Encyclopedia of Popular Music, so I used that without copying it word for word and pointed to the original source. Regards.--Michig (talk) 19:47, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's never ok to copy word for word unless the material you are copying is licenced for you to do so. Unless you see this explicitly stated on a website, you must assume that the content is subject to copyright and that it cannot be copied. You can use facts from these sources and cite those sources as references but copying word for word will end up with the whole section, or even the article being deleted. See WP:C for more details.--Michig (talk) 19:56, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Citations[edit]

{{helpme}} Can I copy and paste something word for word from an article with proper citations?

Yes, of course, but you will need to reformat it into Wikipedia style - e.g. bold, italics, links will not be transferred, you'll have to edit it and do those manually.

You should first copy the article into your own user space and work on it there before making it a live article - for example, make user:Skiguy06880/testpage.  Chzz  ►  20:03, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No you can't if the text you want to copy word for word is subject to copyright. You need to at least rephrase the content. You can copy from another Wikipedia article, but avoid having the same content in multiple articles.--Michig (talk) 20:10, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

{{helpme}} Why is User:Michig telling me that I can't?(look above)--skiguy06880 20:20, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

They were explaining that it is not permitted to copy text from a copyright website or other source. Same as anything - you can cite a source, and paraphrase it, but you can't copy and paste whole blocks of text from other sources.
They said, it's not OK to copy word for word - ie verbatim.

For example, if a book says, "Chzz was born in Footown in 1938, and he went to school at Baa Middle School from Jan 1927 until Feb 1942' - then you should not just copy that and use it in an article. It would, however, be fine to write;

Chzz was born in 1938, in Footown, Blahcountry. <ref name="book"> name of book </ref> After attending Baa Middle school (January 1927 - February 1942)<ref name="book"/>..."

reflist[edit]

{{helpme}} i have the same source, how do I make it the same source and have the ref list have abc. Example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwele#References look at the 2nd source--skiguy06880 16:25, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Named references[edit]

Chzz was born in 1837, <ref name="MyBook">
"The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009.
</ref> in Footown.<ref name="MyBook"/>

Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section with a {{reflist}}, of course; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.

Hope this answers; For more help, you can either;

Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  16:40, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How do I cite a newspaper[edit]

{{helpme}}

ex. Star-Tribune (Minneapolis, Minnesota), January 8, 1996, p. D7.

You'd fill in things like this;
{{citation
|first=
|last=
|authorlink=
|title=
|publisher=
|location=
|page=
|date=
|url=
|accessdate=
}}
Not all of that is essential, just whatever you have. If it is online, you put the URL and the accessdate, otherwise you don't do that bit.
Give it a try; if you need more help, let me know.  Chzz  ►  20:48, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

profanity[edit]

{{helpme}}

what's wikipedia's policy on profanity if it's used in a quote?

Just say it as it is. Wikipedia is not censored.  Chzz  ►  20:48, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
