Hi Sir Nick, Could you see your way to unblocking this user and reblocking as Block anonymous users only ? This IP is one of the ones for Adam Internet (I've marked the talk page) and blocks to Adam usually have some collatoral damage against user's in Adelaide. I can get around this using the secure wikipedia links but it is slow and turns VP and AWB into boatanchors. Thanks in advance - Peripitus (Talk) 10:13, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Question - Protecting a page

Is there any way to allow only registered users to edit a page so that any random person cannot edit and mess with it? (Aneesha 09:51, 16 August 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Yes, there is. Only administrators have that function of semi-protecting or fully protecting a page so that only registered users or administrators can edit a page. Is there any way I can help? --Nearly Headless Nick 09:56, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
People have been vandalising the Ghaziabad page. I have to keep check to come back and clean it up again. I was wondering if it could be protected. Can you help? Thanks. -- Aneesha 16:36, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you feel that a page is being vandalised, you can report it on WP:AIV using the correct format as instructed on the page. In case you think that some user is adding POV version of his own to the article, you can report it on WP:ANI and try to get administrator assistance. Best wishes. --Nearly Headless Nick 10:30, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unblocking

I didn't necessarily object to the unblocking of MatthewFenton since he had apologised and it was a one-off thing (had I been around I'd probably have done it myself), but I do object to your characterisation of it as "clearly unwarranting a block".

He tried to prod, then AfD, the featured article while it was on the main page, at a time when it was likely receiving many hits a minute. We trust in our editors to use at least some common sense and not to do Really Stupid Things, and frankly, when it comes to doing Really Stupid Things, that was pretty high on the list.

If this is the sort of thing that warrants an instant unblock from you, then I suspect my opposition to your RfA was highly warranted. Rebecca 08:19, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blocks are preventive and not punitive measures that administrators use against other editors. Though I agree that MatthewFenton's edits bordered upon being disruptive, I suppose a warning prior to the block would have been in order. I also happened to have a talk with Matthew over IRC, where most of the editors (if I must say) agreed upon giving him another chance. Blocks like these would do no better than scare away geniune editors who are interested in taking this project further. I assumed good faith in his case. Best wishes. --Nearly Headless Nick 12:46, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, we expect users to have the barest minimum of common sense. A user with Matthew's experience should know better than to do Really Stupid Things, and frankly, I feel that unblocking them on the sole basis they hadn't been warned specifically not to do Really Stupid Things is a lapse of judgement on your part. Rebecca 07:27, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I will stick to what is relevant here. Please review WP:BLOCK; and if you think that a block was warranted, a 3 hour block for disruption would have sufficed in this case. --Nearly Headless Nick 10:33, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gandhinagar

Sure. I too feel that Gandhinagar should be better than now. I am thinking of a project (and/or portal) to improve Gujarat related articles. There seem to be a fair number of people from Gujarat here. Articles like Surat, Gandhinagar, Vadodara and Gujarat itself could be made an FA. Also other aspects of Gujarat like history, educational institutes could also be improved. But it is too big a task for me alone. Karmafist

Karmafist has openly stated that he is operating a number of sockpuppets for the purpose of continuing his ongoing vendetta against the project, and has made it plainly clear that he has no intention of editing the article space under the Karmafist account again. I was happy to unblock him as long as he was prepared to behave himself, but he hasn't even gone so far as to apologise for, let alone own up to the specific edits for, the subtle vandalism he had previously boasted about. In these circumstances, I see absolutely no benefit in his being permitted to edit. Rebecca 11:11, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!

Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.

3RR

Try reading the talk page of the article: I'm removing spam, something which has been the subject of FOUR (4) AfDs and two DRVs, a link which fails WP:External links utterly, a subject that the editor has been attempting to shoehorn into Wikipedia for the last year, at least, even changing the name to get around {{deletedpage}}.

Play closer attention before pasting in your templated messages, please. --Calton | Talk 06:56, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You need to report that on WP:ANI, instead of revert-warring with another editor. Its against WP:3RR. If you make more than three reverts in 24 hours, I will have to block you. Best wishes. --Nearly Headless Nick 06:58, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
From WP:3RR: In cases of simple vandalism that is clearly not a content dispute (e.g. graffiti, link spam [emphasis mine]), the three-revert rule does not apply.
This isn't content, it's linkspam. --Calton | Talk 07:06, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And as for WP:ANI, this isn't an admin action, so I doubt they'd be very receptive to a minor complaint like this clogging up the page. --Calton | Talk 07:08, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Don't you think seeking administrator intervention would be proper in such circumstances, instead of taking on another editor and revert-warring with him? You are a credible editor and that is the reason I served you the notice. Please assume good faith while dealing with other editors. For your information, WP:ANI exists for dealing with editors who vandalise wikipedia with linkspam or gibberish. You would be in no way clogging up the page by taking your request there. Revert-warring is not the answer. --Nearly Headless Nick 07:11, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am well aware of what WP:ANI is, thank you very much. Also WP:AIV. And while I think one problem user spamming one link to one page doesn't justify bringing out the big guns of WP:ANI, I'll post a notice there, especially since the RFC notice I posted failed to get a response. --Calton | Talk 07:23, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

welcome

Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to the India WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of India.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every India article in Wikipedia.
  • Can you code? The automation department uses automated and semi-automated methods to perform batch tasks that would be tedious to do manually.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! -- Lost(talk) 08:30, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Horizonte Medio

Hi Glen, I was wondering if you could give me a hand. I discovered a copyright vio on Horizonte Medio, and was going to list it for speedy deletion, but, unfortunatly, the article was created more than 48 hours ago, so I took it to AfD. Since then, the original article creator, User:Priscilla D has removed all of the copyright vio (along with the AfD tag), so I was wondering if you wouldn't mind just deleting all of the history for the page, bar the last edit. It seems that this would save everyone a lot of time and effort. Thanks for any help you can give. Yours, Thε Halo Θ 09:35, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Queer. — Nearly Headless Nick {L} 16:01, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandals

You may not have noticed but that is two we have "met" over - thanks for the blocks - points for a third today??!! Cheers --Nigel (Talk) 13:52, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User:(bunch of korean characters)

I unblocked the 3-character username you blocked earlier today per an unblock request. They have a namechange pending from 2 days ago so there's no reason for them to be blocked atm in my opinion. Just wanted to drop you a note. Syrthiss 17:01, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that's okay then. I did not place an autoblock myself. Getting a new account is much easier for newbie users, though. — Nearly Headless Nick {L} 17:03, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fairy's greetings

Wow, this sorcerers school here is really great. I just type in eight characters, and within five minutes I'm greeted by a nearly headless ghost! That's magic indeed. Do you think an apprentice fairy like me could become part of Gryffindore? These other guys over at Greater and Lesser Tunbs are certainly Slytherins, I'm sure... :-(

Thanks for giving me that link. It looks complicated with all those different steps, but maybe one of those "requests for comments" is what I need. But look what they are doing now: one of them not only has reverted me pretending he was only doing "copyediting", now he has also slapped some weird sign on my user page saying I'm a "sockpuppet"! What can I do? Am I allowed to just remove that sign? I have no idea who that other person is and why he thinks he's me. This is really frustrating. FellFairy 08:46, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I will certainly help you out in this case. But, you need to get help from other editors regarding that article, because I have no knowledge of the subject. Perhaps you can check the history of the article to check out the contributors to the article and message them regarding the dispute on the page, and try to gain consensus. Best regards, — Nearly Headless Nick {L} 08:55, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have not warned him. If you can do so, that would be great. - Ganeshk (talk) 08:59, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
FellFairy, the user has been warned. I hope you can resolve the dispute soon. A better option than filing an RfC would be to talk to the users involved and go to other editors invovled with the article and form a consensus on the talk page. — Nearly Headless Nick {L} 09:03, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your intervention. Actually, ManiF has now inserted some of the content back in, so that it now looks much better. The trouble about discussing with the other editors involved previously is that apparently they were all quite one-sided. All of them wanted either the one extreme version or the other extreme version, this is really the first time anybody even tries to write a neutral version in months. FellFairy 09:10, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've now gone ahead and did this "Request for Comment" thing nevertheless. I hope I did it right. There have been two other users on the article now who just revert everything I write without responding to what I say on the talk page. I'm rather frustrated. FellFairy 06:35, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I keep pestering you with this, but I don't know who else to ask for help. You are an administrator on this site, right? I made those "Requests for comment", but nobody has answered. Instead, this other guy, Khosrow II, keeps reverting me. He doesn't even bother to discuss what I say on the talk page, and he reverts blindly, even wiping out other correct things I wrote that he doesn't even disagree with. I told him I'm sick of it and I will only come back to the article and change it when I've read up more and have all the sources. Then the same guy goes to a weird page where all the Iranian editors seem to be hanging out, and says they should create a list of all Iran-related pages so they can monitor them better. Wikipedia talk:Iranian Wikipedians' notice board. Apparently, these guys have a system of watching all Iran-related pages together and not letting anybody else edit them. That page is full of nasty polemics too. I can't believe that's how Wikipedia is supposed to work! And look also at what the same guy is doing at another page, Pan-Turkism. Stupid page, for sure, and he and some opponents of his have been reverting this to and fro at least twenty times within a few hours. Sure, what the other guys write is just as silly as what he writes, LOL. I'm no longer sure I like this place. I just wanted to find some info on those territorial disputes and make a few additions to one article, and what I find is it's all nasty fights here. FellFairy 07:46, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Please provide me with a list of all the pages where this is happening. It will be helpful to me. Thank you. — Nearly Headless Nick {L} 07:53, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really know of all pages. But look at this list at Iranian Wikipedians' notice board. There's a whole list of articles and it sounds as if they are saying: these articles are all "ours", let's watch them together to make sure only our point of view is represented there and nobody else can slip their opinion in. That's certainly how they operate on that Greater and Lesser Tunbs page I was trying to edit. And the Pan-Turkism page, I think Khosrow reverted it at least on 30 September, 21:20, 21:59, and 1 October 14:39, 14:39, 15:41 and 18:31, and one opponent of his did it even more often. FellFairy 08:05, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
To tell you the truth, FellFairy. I am an editor from India, and I do not have much knowledge regarding Iranian stuff. It would be much easier if you contacted an Iranian editor/admin to help you out on this particular issue. Meanwhile, I'll do whatever I can to help. Regards, — Nearly Headless Nick {L} 08:08, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sock-puppet

I highly suspect that User:FellFairy is a Sock-puppet of User:Jidan. As I understand the use of "suspected sock-puppet" tag is legitimate as long as there is reason for suspicion. The tag is used to alert admins and other users to take notice and file a request for check-user. --ManiF 09:07, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to add that if you check User:Jidan's block log, you'll see that the user has a history of sock-puppetry, and User:FellFairy perfectly fits User:Jidan's profile in terms on interest, behavior, editing, language, location and etc. --ManiF 09:13, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So you are still at it? That's not nice. What's that check-user thing? A kind of ordeal where I'm required to hold a hot iron or walk across water to prove I'm innocent? Okay, let's do it. FellFairy 09:10, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Er... that template is intended for cases of extremely obvious vandalism to articles, like replacing them with profanity or obscene images. It is certainly not intended to talk to an Administrator whom you believe has reverted an edit in mistake. Please read template usage notes before doing such things in future --Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 09:12, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"Welcome to Wikipedia." Just out of interest, when was the last time someone welcomed a sysop with a {{blatantvandal}}? Please Assume good faith and use the test templates (starting at test1-n for something like this) when this occurs. Also, please sign your comments with four tildes for a timestamp reference to assist other users in analysing the situation. --59.167.101.54 09:15, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
