Flagging issue

Hi Shalor, Sorry to have to bother you with another student editor issue. A student from Wikipedia:Wiki_Ed/Xavier_University_of_Louisiana/Human_Rights_and_World_History_(Fall_2017) just added a chunk of text to Mothers of the Movement that was entirely unsourced, as well as had issues with tone, redundancy, NPOV, BLP, etc. I tried to clean it up but what was left was all unsourced BLP material, and I don't have time right now to go source all of the claims so I've removed for the time being. The bigger issue seems to be the student really was not prepared with the basics of how to contribute to the encyclopedia, so I wanted to flag; if there's anything you can do... thanks so much. Innisfree987 (talk) 18:59, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

  • Thank you Innisfree987 - I went and did some cleanup for the article (we actually had an edit conflict at one point!). I'll speak with them about this. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:36, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
    • Thanks for your attention to the entry and the course--I'm actually going to have to delete some more because lots of what was added this morning (by a separate student editor from the same course) is not actually verified in the sources. It'd be great if the instructor could make sure the students have a better grasp of what's expected from encyclopedia contributions. Thanks for your help. Innisfree987 (talk) 17:45, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Thanks! I tried doing some editing down myself but if any of it is incorrect please let me know! I tried to get rid of the stuff that looked to be openly wrong, but I could definitely have missed something! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:08, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
    • Thanks so much for your work on this. The latest stuff I've removed was chiefly unverified, and possibly (rather than overtly) wrong--e.g. the implication that the group was formed as a Clinton surrogate, I haven't been able to find a source that says that's definitely true, and meanwhile I see other sources that seem to indicate the mothers were organizing prior to their involvement with Clinton, so I cut that until it's verified one way or another. I've added a note on the talk page with yours urging the students to make sure they can link each claim to a specific source so hopefully that will help with accuracy/verifiability... Thank you again for your efforts here! Innisfree987 (talk)
  • Thanks! I wasn't entirely certain about that as well - there wasn't a lot of information about when they formed and it didn't really fit with the later statement by another person who appears to be a part of this group. Thank you so much! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:54, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Ay, sorry to report, one of the students in question readded all the problem material (and deleted some legitimate material) yesterday. I've reverted but wanted to let you know unfortunately it seems as though the students aren't getting the message about how to contribute constructively... Innisfree987 (talk) 22:49, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
  • @Innisfree987:: It looks like the student went to re-add the material before noticing the discussion content and then removed it after noticing it, but reverted it to the wrong version. I think that I should have left them a note on their talk page in addition to the talk page post, as pings may not be as immediately easy to identify as a "look over this" thing than the talk page banner does when there's a new message. Jclark17, please be careful about this! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 01:03, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

Need help request from SolFern (talk)

Hello!

I need help with citing sources properly. I have several statements about Sana Amanat that come from the same source. It feels strange to provide the same citation after every other sentence. Is there a way to properly cite many sentences into one source?

Also, I wanted to provide brief descriptions of some of Ms.Marvel's individual volumes. What would I name the section in which I do so? So far, I've got Early Life, Career, Bibliography, and References. Could it fit in one of those sections or would I have to create a new one? If so, what would I name the new section?

Thank you so much!

--SolFern (talk) 16:10, 24 November 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi SolFern! Are you using Visual Editor? If so, you can just copy the citation (which will show up like [1]) and paste it after the other claim. You may also just place one citation at the end of the paragraph if there are no major, contentious claims in the paragraph. If you need to cite specific pages, however, it's better to keep repeating the source. Hope this helps! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:40, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

Need help request from Digitalhumanitiestudent1 (talk)

Hello!

The thing I needed help with was an image I wanted to place in the article I am working on, 'Polybius' (urban legend) The 'screenshot' of the video game (it's an urban legend, so the 'screenshot' is probably faked by a creator, not a screenshot of a real game) was originally posted on a website called coinop.org Someone has recently cleaned up the image, pixel-by-pixel restoring and improving it, and I found it under CC commons image search. Does this sound acceptable to use? I just wanted to make sure. Thanks!! Digitalhumanitiestudent1 (talk) 18:29, 17 November 2017 (UTC)

Hello.

I need help with my article. I was trying to upload it to my course page to receive some feedback. Instead I got a flag from an editor saying it was unambiguous advertisement and it was deleted. I was wondering if I could send you my article to find out what was wrong with it.

Thank you,

Carleigh

Which academic paywalls did you run into? Or better yet which sources were you looking for? I have access to some of the databases like Questia, JSTOR, OUP and I can see if they are available. I'd be happy to help with a standalone article, and then a brief summary as Johnbod suggested. Seraphim System (talk) 04:59, 28 November 2017 (UTC) Seraphim System (talk) 04:59, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Seraphim System! That would be awesome - I can't remember which specific paywalls I hit, but they were the usual ones like JSTOR. I also ran into an issue with a lot of sources being book releases, so I could only really pull from things that were very visible on Google Books. I'll look for this later on this afternoon and try and pull up a list. :) Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:50, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

Hello! Thanks for your comment. I am just getting started on Wikipedia, so your criticism is extremely helpful. Shortly after your comment, I added on to the talk page of the article and did not receive any commentary. So, I took your comments into consideration and edited our addition to the article and little by little have been adding onto the article. So far, no one has reverted my edits or discussed it on the talk page. If you have the time to check it out and comment on anything else, I will gladly go back and edit it. Thanks for your help!

Samantha Irby

Hello Shalor,

I moved the article of Samantha Irby from draft to article. Also, I actually work in groups of Samantha Irby topic with Bre'Anna because my professor says that we can work in groups or my own. I told Bre'Anna that I want to work in groups with her, and I told my professor that I choose to work in groups with Bre'Anna. In case you ask what class I am, I am in ENGL 3380: Advanced Composition in Sam Houston State. Bre'Anna already wrote an article of Samantha Irby, and I work on it with her. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jnt018 (talkcontribs) 18:25, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @Jnt018: Are two or more of you editing under one username? That's not allowed: you all need to have your own username and take responsibility for your own edits. Nobody except "Jnt018" seems to have edited the article Samantha Irby. If your professor didn't explain that you must not share a username, then they have let you down. PamD 18:46, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Hi PamD - it looks like the other student (Breannasade) put their work in their userspace and the other student likely drew from their work. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:28, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

No, we are not editing under one username. My professor did explain it to the class that we cannot edit under one username. I did my own edit. Jnt018 (talk) 19:34, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

User:Jasonwujiaxi's non-free uploads

Hi Shalor. I believe you are helping out students involved in UCSD/HIGR_210_Socialism_in_China_(2017_Fall). I just found five files recently uploaded by User:Jasonwujiaxi as non-free content that have some problems which need attention. Since you have already probably established a bit of a rapport with Jason and the other students in the project, I'd figure I'd ask you to try and explain the following to Jason. I am happy to post something more user-friendly than a template on his talk page, however, if you think that would not unnecessarily confuse things.

The first problem was the files were being used in User:Jasonwujiaxi/sandbox which is not allowed per WP:NFCC#9. I've removed the files and left and edit sums explaining why, but perhaps you might want to post something on the user's talk page explaining why non-free content cannot be used this way.

The second problem has to do with the files' non-free use rationales or more specifically the lack thereof. Each use of a non-free file is required to have a seperate specific non-free use rationale per WP:NFCC#10c and those which don't may be removed per WP:NFCCE or tagged for deletion per WP:F6. In many cases NFCC#10c/F6 issues can be resolved by sinmply providing the required rationale, but in this case this might be difficult because after looking at the way these files are being used in Maoist Theory of National Struggle, it's hard to see how their respective uses provide the context required by WP:NFCC#8. Simply adding a non-free use rationale is not in and of itself a justification for non-free use per WP:JUSTONE and these particular uses look like WP:DECORATIVE and WP:ITSHISTORIC to me. NFCC#8 discussions can be subjective, so maybe I am missing something which is why I didn't just remove the files from the article; however, I've seen quite a number of WP:FFD where the consensus for this type use is that it is not policy compliant. This kind of thing might be pretty complicated for a student-editor to grasp, so maybe some talk page discussion would be helpful clarification.

Finally, the third problem has to do with the file names. These seem to be good candidates for a name change per WP:FNC#2. This can be done by adding {{Rename media}} to the top of the files' pages and a WP:FILEMOVER will then come along and do the rest. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:58, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

  • thank you! I'll definitely talk to him about this! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 00:27, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
Hi again Shalor. I noticed that Jasonwujiaxi removed the maintenance templates you added to Maoist Theory of National Struggle. It does look like some more sources were added, but I'm not sure if that addressed all of the issues you pointed out on their user talk. Anyway, I didn't re-add the templates because I don't want to discourage this student and figured you are in a better position to asssess if they need to be re-added. It is in the mainspace, however, which mean others might prefer might be a little more proactive in cleaning things up and removing what they percieve to be problems. If this is something that this student is being graded upon, then it might be better to userfy or move to the draft namespace since people will tend to leave it alone unless there are serious issue which need to be addressed. I'm not sure how many of these students are aware of WP:OWN and how many wake up to find "their" work to have been completely revised by others overnight; it also might not really be an accurate reflection of their work if the final product is something re-written/improved on by other more experienced editors. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:31, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
Just want to add that while doing some pretty minor formatting cleanup, I noticed some things that make me a bit suspicious of this as a possible copy-and-paste copyvio. In the editing mode, a number of the apostrophes and other punctuation marks look to be full-width in markup, and the quotation marks are MOS:CURLY. My experience at editing has been that Wikipedia tends to use half-width and non-curly quotes when content is typically added in edit mode, but such things show up as full-width when copy-pasted into the article. Of course, the user could've just been working off Wikipedia in MS Word or something, but might also unfortunately be a sign of something much worse. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:04, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Hi Marchjuly, I was thinking about moving it to the student's userspace since I'm really concerned that this may get AfD'd in its current state. I'm not familiar enough with Maoism to know if this specific topic would warrant its own page or not, so I'm worried that someone may think that it's too specific of a topic and is written in too much of an essay format to work on. I think I may reach out to someone at WP:SOCIALISM and see if someone would be willing to look over the page and give some feedback on the article's talk page and I think that I'll move it for the time being just to be on the safe side. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:57, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Also, I've run this through a few copyright detection programs (Grammerly's program as well as Earwig's Copyvio Detector) and couldn't find anything, so it doesn't appear to be a copyright or plagiarism issue. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:27, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
No worries then about the possible copyvios. I checked Earwig myself, and was going to post that my hunch was likely wrong. As for userfying the content, I think that's probably a good idea, especially if this student is being graded on their work. As an article, it's out there for everyone and anyone to edit, but in the user namespace it most likely will be left alone for the student to continue working on. One thing about userfication though is that non-free content cannot be used in the user namespace. The non-free files which were being used in the draft would've eventually been flagged as a WP:NFCC#9 violation by a bot, so I've hidden them. I've provided more details about this on the talk page for reference.
It might also be a good idea to encourage Jason to work on the draft in only one place since he appears to also be doing it at User:Jasonwujiaxi/sandbox. He also re-added the non-free images I removed from that sandbox, so I'm going to remove them again. I'm willing cut students a little slack, but they also need to check their user talk pages and edit sums left by others; otherwise, others are going to start assuming WP:IDHT. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:08, 23 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Hi again Shalor/Tokyogirl79. Just thought you should know that Jasonwujiaxi has just created Maoist Theory of National Struggle. I think it would've been much better for this editor to have submitted it via AfC or at least had someone take a look at it before moving it to the mainspace again. I'm not sure if this editor fully grasps WP:OWN and that once something has been added to the mainspace that it's there for all to poke at for better or worst. Personally, I don't know enough about the subject matter to offer a detailed critique, so I guess we'll have to wait and see what others do. Anyway, I'm going to ask members of the Philosophy, China and Socialism WikiProjects to review and asses the article. I do still have concerns, however, as to how this project is being graded since I don't think it would be an accurate reflection of the student's if other more experienced editors go in and clean up or improve the quality of the article. I'm not sure how WikiEd deals with such things, but maybe the course instructor should be made aware that this is how Wikipedia works. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:11, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Hi Marchjuly - typically instructors grade their students on effort and how closely they follow guidelines rather than what "sticks" or how much is altered. I say typically because once in a blue moon we'll get someone who does grade on these things and we will have to step in. I will get one of my supervisors to ask the teacher about this just in case, since it looks like they're new to the program. BTW, thank you for posting at the WP talk pages asking for assistance - I tried getting people to look at the draft, but I don't see where anyone gave him feedback. However I will say that the student seems to have been doing some pruning on his sandbox version of the article, so it does seem like he's listening to our concerns. I'm going to see if I can find someone specific to look at the article - I'm pretty much just going to pull on names who have edited Maoism related articles and look like they would be a good resource for this. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:26, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
    • Some others have started to cleanup the article, so perhaps it will all be sorted out now. As for the grading aspect, I know little about how these things are assessed, and also noticed that the insgructor does not seem to be an experienced editor as well, but this too will most likely be eventually sorted out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:58, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

Hey Shalor. Continuing work on my article for Vickie Vertiz. I am wondering about the CC of a photo that I am hoping to be able to use for the article. I am including a link to the page I hope to take the photo of her from. The photo with the licensing are included here. https://vertiz.wordpress.com/ Let me know what I can do going forward. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pchartrand22 (talkcontribs) 03:16, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Pchartrand22! The blog doesn't have any information about the copyright so we have to assume that this is held under a copyright that would not be compatible with Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, meaning that it's not held under a CC license. In general all content (images, text, other media) is considered to be copyrighted to the content creator under a non-compatible license unless it's explicitly marked as being either in the public domain or has a compatible Creative Commons license. It's often very difficult to get photos of a person into an article because of this, which is why so many articles lack photos or only have photos that they took themselves, often in a public setting. Need help request from Ejps19 (talk)

Hello.

I need help with looking over my draft of the additions to my Pesticide Drift Article. When I added in my findings to the live article I was given this comment: "Removed good-faith edit which was riddled with errors (spelling, syntax, punctuation, formatting), which removed existing good content, and which was entirely too focused on one incident with migrant workers. The scope of this topic is broader.". I am trying to restructure my article so that it focuses on the sociological and health implications of the phenomenon of pesticide drift without getting into other topics areas but also not being limited to focusing on a handful of specific incidents. I'd appreciate any feedback you'd have to give on my draft article. Thank you.

--Ejps19 (talk) 20:57, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Ejps19! Since this goes into science and medicine related topics, one of the first things I would recommend would be to look over this module on editing these topics, as this can give you some tips on sourcing and writing styles.
In the general vein of sourcing, make sure that the sources aren't primary. For example, an article that was written by the researcher who conducted a research study would be considered a primary source for that person's findings - however an article where someone else mentioned the study would be. The module goes over this a little. I would also make sure that when you look at your research, that you make sure that the coverage is general, as an article that only covers a very specific topic area (ie, pesticide drift in one state or one town) would most likely not be of huge help unless it also discusses the issue on a broader level.
Another good option and one I recommend is to ask the person who removed the content for advice. Jessicapierce may be able to give you some specific pointers on what the article specifically needs. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:06, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Janelle Asselin Article

Would this be an appropriate addition to Janelle Asselin's wikipedia page?

Teen Titan Cover Review

In 2014 with the release of a new DC Teen Titan cover, Janelle Asselin released an article with her criticism of the new artwork displayed on the cover. Asselin deemed the artwork as "embarrassing" and "a mistake" due to the way that the artist portrayed Wonder Girl [1]. Asselin remarked that Wonder Girl's body was drawn inappropriately and disproportionally, overall emphasizing that Wonder Girl's portrayal was unrealistic to an actual teenage female body. After Janelle Asselin released this criticism, she began receiving rape threats and other derogatory sexual remarks questioning her professionalism and experience in the comic book industry [2].

Use of talk pages; volunteer time

About this, do not abuse your editing privileges to lecture people on article Talk pages. Please remember that you are paid to help students. See also here. Jytdog (talk) 16:52, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

and here, please don't suggest that students parrot a company's marketing in Wikipedia -- "digital industrial transformation" is corporate PR mumbo-jumbo. Thanks. Jytdog (talk) 19:09, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
  • My basic gist is that you need to be careful about how you respond to others. I understand that you are editing as a volunteer and that in this capacity I am a paid employee, however this is something that is good in general to take into consideration. People can't read intent and body language over the internet, so it's easy for people to read into a comment as rude and assume that the person is operating out of bad faith - even if this wasn't the case at all - and then get defensive. I do think that the student could have responded better but we've got to remember that they're newbies here and they likely won't know what to look for as far as sourcing goes and they're also used to a completely different way of writing. We do give them tutorial material, but writing and sourcing on here is very often a hands on learning process.
As far as the terminology goes, I wasn't quite sure how to phrase that since I wasn't entirely sure what it was. A quick search shows that this is an industrial term of sorts that looks to generally refer to bringing digital technology into industries that may not have used it before and making advances on existing technology in the field. Rather than use the wrong word, I decided to just leave that in for the time being - which is why I said on their talk page that the revamp still needed work. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:49, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
  • It's honestly what I try to do with my main account when I come across people. I've blocked my fair share of people who were obviously here to promote a company or person. I've also tried to work with people in the hopes of getting them to edit appropriately and convert to good long-term editors. I've found that a good chunk of people who have come on to Wikipedia really don't know how things come across and will still make the mistakes even with things like WP:ADVENTURE and other tutorial material for whatever reason. (Language barrier, confusing text, works better as a "hands on" person, etc.) Basically, I try to start by explaining things (hence the long paragraphs I'll often leave on newbies' talk pages) so they can understand why their specific writing was problematic, as this often (albeit not always) helps them learn as they go. Need help request from ShalorJingwennn (talk)

Hello

I found that there was a page showed that the born year of Sarah Dyer was wrong on Sarah Dyer's talk page. And I corrected it. I removed the wrong information. So, did it break the policy any more? Should I do anything else? Thank you

--JingwennnJingwennn (talk) 21:47, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Jingwennn! Did you add a reliable source that verified Dyer's birthday when you changed it? If not, then the best course of action is to just remove it and leave a note on the article's talk page that says why you removed it. The reason for the source is that sometimes a person's date of birth can be widely reported as incorrect, so a good source would help show that its verified in some way. Need help request from VT235 (talk)

Hello.

I need help with editing my addition onto the deviance (sociology) Wikipedia page. I just want to ensure the grammar and spelling is correct.

Containment theory is a part of the Control theory because it also revolves around the thoughts that stop individuals from engaging in crime. Walter C. Reckless studied the unfinished approached meant to explain the reasoning behind delinquency and crime. He recognized that societal disorganization is included in the study of delinquency and crime under social deviance. Reckless claimed that majority of those who live in unstable areas tend not to have criminal tendencies in comparison those who live in middle-class areas. This claim opens up more possible approaches to social disorganization, and proves that the already implemented theories are in need or a deeper connection to further explore ideas of crime and delinquency. These observations brought Reckless to ask questions such as, "Why do some persons break through the tottering (social) controls and others do not? Why do rare cases in well-integrated society break through the lines of strong controls?"

Reckless asserted that the intercommunication between self-control and social controls are partly responsible for the development of delinquent thoughts. Social disorganization was not related to particular environments, but instead was involved in the deterioration of an individuals social controls. The containment theory is the idea that everyone possesses mental and social safeguards which protect the individual from committing acts of deviancy. Containment depends on the individuals ability to control and separate inner and outer controls for normative behavior.[1]

Question about publishing my page

Hello Shalor! Thanks for the welcome in my talk box. I just had a quick question about publishing my article about Irene Koh. Since she didn't have a Wikipedia page, I've had to create it from scratch. I'm afraid of it getting deleted for not having enough content, or my sources not being good enough. I was wondering if you could take a look at my sandbox where I'm working on it and let me know if it looks alright so far. I'm almost done adding information to the 'career' section, so it's almost ready to go live.

I also just wanted to make sure that when I make it live, am I supposed to publish a little bit at a time instead of publishing the whole thing? Again, I don't want it to get deleted for insufficient information when I first start publishing the information.

Sorry about all the questions, I just want to make sure my page looks fine and it won't get deleted. Please let me know!

Thanks in advance,

Alora (aka Percykitty)

  • Hi Percykitty! I've made some tweaks to the page for flow and tone, however I'm mostly concerned about the article's sourcing and overall notability, as Koh would not be able to inherit notability from the comics she's worked on. The sourcing is almost entirely primary, meaning that it cannot show notability for Koh. Only a few of the sources were non-primary and those went to a fan-made wiki, which isn't considered to be a usable source on Wikipedia at all. I did some searching and found a few sources, however the coverage for her seems to be predominantly for her work on the Legend of Korra series. This poses an issue since the article needs to show how she's independently notable and for more than just the LoK series. It looks like it may be a little bit too soon for an article for her since she hasn't gained a whole lot of coverage beyond LoK, so definitely try to find more independent sourcing. As far as the moving goes, with a new page you can just move the article to the name "Irene Koh", however I wouldn't do that until you have more sourcing. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:46, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Ah yes, I completely forgot about how the Avatar Wiki wouldn't be a good source, thanks for pointing that out. Forgive me for the next questions, since the trainings about sources on Wikipedia did confuse me a bit. Does this mean I cannot use her actual website as a source for her biographical information? I'm also assuming that the Comic Book DB page about her isn't an independent source? (The primary sources confused me in the training module too) Also, if I can find interviews where she has been mentioned about being involved with the comic books she's been a part of, will those work as good sources? Again, sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I can actually make a page about her!

  • Hi Percykitty! You can use her website for very basic information, however ideally these facts will be backed up by secondary, independent sourcing. As far as the database goes, that's considered to be relatively routine coverage, so it can't show notability. Be careful of databases. At best, these will be considered routine coverage and will not be able to show notability as the information is often provided by the creative professional or someone who represents them. At worst these sites are considered to be unreliable because they accept user submitted content and don't verify the information very well or at all. (I can actually tell you a few stories about IMDb not verifying information.) It looks like the Comic Book DB accepts user input, so I wouldn't use it as a big source of information - although you could put it in the external links section of the article.
Now when it comes to the mentions of her, those typically will not be able to show notability. They can back up basic details, but they can't show notability because they're usually too brief to be considered an in-depth source. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:19, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

Hello.

Moving the Contents box to between my opening section with the title of the article and the next section (called Panic).

--Jonjjjej (talk) 14:53, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Jonjjjej - I took a look at your draft and it looks like this is written like a persuasive essay rather than an encyclopedia article. In other words, you're taking available information and drawing your own conclusions and writing the content in a way that supports your argument. As a paper it wouldn't be bad, but it doesn't fit Wikipedia. On Wikipedia we can only summarize what other people have stated in reliable sources and present it in a neutral fashion that doesn't support any specific viewpoint or opinion. Need help with a page redirect

Hi Shalor,

I am working on a page for 'cell lineage tracing' that is in my sandbox right now, but when I try to open it, I get redirected to another page. I thought I should contact you to see what to do about that because I am getting ready to move my page out of my sandbox. Thanks! Biorun24 (talk) 00:12, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Biorun24 - I don't see where the page is redirecting anywhere. Clicking on User:Biorun24/sandbox just takes me to your sandbox. Also just as a note - Ian (Wiki Ed) is watching over your class now since it's science oriented, so if you need any help as far as draft evaluation goes, you'll need to go to him. User:Venderbye619

Hi again Shalor. It appears that Venderbye619, another one of the students in Wikipedia:Wiki_Ed/UCSD/HIGR_210_Socialism_in_China_(2017_Fall), is having difficulty understanding how image use works on Wikipedia. I removed two non-free ones from Draft:Beidaihe Conference (1958) and also tagged them for speedy deletion per WP:F6. The editor also uploaded two other images to Commons as "own work", which I'm pretty sure are not.

Like Jasonwujiaxi, Venderbye619 is also a student of FanZiben who, to put it politely, seems to have zero experience when it comes to Wikipedia. I'm not trying to totally break bad on anyone here, but it seems it would be beneficial to the students if the course instructor had some understanding as to how Wikipedia works. Perhaps someone at WikiEd can get in contact with FanZiben and ask to him/her to instruct the students in their class to be very careful when it comes to file uploads. It might even be a good idea to advise them to avoid uploading any new images altogether and instead just try to make do with what can be found on Commons. In cases where it's absolutely essentially for a new file to be uploaded, the kids should be advised to ask for help at WP:FFU or WP:MCQ so that someone with a better understanding of image licensing, etc. can help them out. This might seems a little too restrictive, but if these kids keep uploading copyvios or using files incorrectly, somebody's going to eventually ask an administrator to step in and take appropriate action. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:47, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Marchjuly, I've asked for the teacher to step in and ask the students to be more careful. I've included a bit of information about the non-free guidelines, specifically that they can't use it except in a live article. It may actually be better to have the class not upload anything else at this point in time until they get a better understanding of image guidelines. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:03, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
    • Thank you for checking on this. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:47, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
    • See now this has the potential to become a bigger problem than it needs to be because the two non-free file's I tagged were re-upload to Commons by the editor under a CC license as File:Propaganda Poster.jpg and File:China Pictorial.png. At best, this as good-faith mistake which shows very little understanding about images; at worst, this is an attempt to game the system by someone not really here. Continuing this kind of thing is a sure way to end up blocked on Commons. — Marchjuly (talk) 23:14, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Marchjuly: They haven't responded yet, so I am going to get my manager to speak to them. That should hopefully get a deeper impact with the teacher. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:21, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Also, I'm going to go through the images and either nominate them for deletion or try to fix the copyrights. Thank you for being so patient with all of this! You've really gone above and beyond here! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:47, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

Hello.

I am wondering if the three paragraphs in my sandbox have the right balance between summary and analysis. Thanks.

--UCSDeascanio (talk) 19:30, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi UCSDeascanio! The paragraphs still need work in order to read less like analysis. It's good, but you need to be careful of things like "in fact" since in most occasions you're summarizing claims from a specific person or group of people. Also make sure to attribute claims, as this can help with making things seem less like analysis as well. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:30, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

--Pedlann (talk) 18:10, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Pedlann! I made some slight changes to the page, as it lacked a lead paragraph. Offhand I would suggest that you try and add more sourcing to the article to help establish why this specific Indian school is notable and help back up claims. Other than that, I would also recommend just going over the text and make sure that it flows and that it doesn't contain original research or personal opinion. The sourcing looks to be the main thing, though. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:50, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Karen365 - will this be an independent article or will it be added to the article on San Francisco? Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:36, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

I'm not sure what would be best, I was planning on adding it to the article on San Francisco though. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Karen365 (talkcontribs) 15:58, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Karen - adding to another article would definitely be best. I'll weigh back in in a little bit. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:48, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Hi Karen365! It looks good, but one main thing to remember is that since this will be in the main page, some of this information will already be in other parts of the page so make sure that you aren't redundant and that if you do repeat information, that it's clearly tied in with the topic of global cities. The other thing I would recommend is that you give a very brief definition of a global city at some point in the lead paragraph. Like "Such cities are considered to be an important node in the global economic system and are characterized by their ethnic clustering, network of international connectivity, and convergence of technological innovation." If you do take this sentence, make sure that you note that some of it was taken from the main article on global cities, since that's where I pulled the brief definition. Content Removal

Hi Shalor, I recently added an education section to the Digital Phobic article, and I was curious as to why some of the information that I added was removed. Just wanted to know so I can explain it to my professor. This was a grade and I didn't want him to think that I didn't put any work into the article. Thanks Dsudjr (talk) 01:20, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Dsudjr, there were a few reasons that I removed the content. The first reason is that some of the portions were unsourced and as such, came across as original research. The following portion is an example of this:
With this recent technological shift happening in the education realm, many teachers fear that they are losing their classroom. Everything that is on the lesson plan each week for them to teach is readily available on the internet for their students to access, so the job of the teachers these days is basically just to monitor the progress of their students, or merely just to maintain an order and structure in the classroom.
This wasn't sourced at all, so this came across as original research. Some of the content was also a little subjective to the person or area, as some of the sourcing was written from the point of view of a person in a specific area. For example, what is true for a person working in one portion of California may not be true (or at least the same type of true) for someone in Georgia, so you've got to be careful not to generalize based on this input. Some of it felt a little bit like it was repeating itself slightly, so I also wanted to tighten it up a little for that reason. One portion I removed because the source wouldn't be seen as reliable on here (this source) because the source looked to be a self-published blog posted on a site that offers courses and products to incoming visitors, meaning that it's an e-commerce site. Always be a little leery with sites like that because you never know how well they'll factcheck their work or if something may be a sneaky advertisement for their wares. As a paper this wouldn't be bad, but it's just something that would need a little more work on here. You can re-work the content, though - my whittling down of the content doesn't have to be the version that stays, of course! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:57, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

Bad advice

Please do not give students bad advice about editing health content, as you did here. We simply gather MEDRS sources, read them, and summarize them. We almost never write about "studies". Jytdog (talk) 20:59, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

  • The gist of what I was trying to do is summarize what they would need to do if they did want to include study data - basically, what I intended to show what that the requirements for including information about studies is so specific and strict that the amount of times they would be able to include the information is fairly slim. I'm admittedly more used to covering primary source requirements from a non-science point of view. I will definitely be more specific from here on out and say that it's rare that studies can (or should) be included when I go over why studies are seen as a primary source, thanks. Best, Hannah — Preceding unsigned comment added by HannahPark0709 (talkcontribs) 23:10, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi HannahPark0709 - by this I predominantly meant the sections of the content that were unsourced, but sentences like these come across as original research due to the way that they're written and because they're unsourced. If they can be attributed to a source that would help the sentences out a lot, as writing things like "According to ...", "So-and-so believes that..." will more clearly mark it as a conclusion drawn by one of the authorities in the sourcing.
It is highly likely that during the time that Domenico worked as a Gharzone for the Opera's projects, he received many influences from many of the mentioned sculptors.
The same concepts are shown in Jacopo della Quercia's work of Madonna in the Fonte Gaia. Both artists recall back to international gothic art by presenting their figures with bunched drapery and a gentle flow of line. It is therefor entirely possible that Jacopo della Quercia may have even provided some guidance in the creation of Domenico di Bartolo's work. This type of mentorship is comparable to that of Ghiberti in Florence, who, as stated in the Commentarii, provided the same kind of assistance to the painters in that city during his time.
I hope that this helps! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:22, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

Article Evaluation

“Start School Later Movement.” Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation, 12 Dec. 2017, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Start_School_Later_movement.

This article is focusing on the idea of getting school to start later. Throughout this article it has been proven that if school starts later then students will perform better in school. As students get older they need more sleep because they are working harder in school each year. When the amount of sleep required is not being produced by the students then that causes failure for the student not anyone else. I think this article can be improved by giving more present research that has been done as well. The idea that school should start later now should be more brought out in this article with relevant and updated information to support the reasoning. Since this article is more heavy based on the fact that school should start later, most of the argument is against why it should not be earlier. The sources to support this article, but can be updated as well. The information in this article mostly comes from reliable source such as schools and universities. However, this article could give more support on the impact starting school earlier makes on a student, rather than giving little information. Also, I fell this article should give more information on what lack of sleep can do for your health as well and how to not let that happen if you are getting lack of sleep.

https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2015/08/why-school-should-start-later/401489/ Richmond, Emily. “Why School Should Start Later in the Morning.” The Atlantic, Atlantic Media Company, 17 Aug. 2015, www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2015/08/why-school-should-start-later/401489/.

This article above is another supporting article that backs up why school should start later. This article gives updated research along with factual evidence on how school starting later could make a great impact on students, especially those in their teen years in high school or maybe even some of those in college.

  • Hi Imayes01, global is usually better when it comes to articles on general topics like this one unless you're editing a section or article that deals with a specific country. As far as author names go, I would recommend leaving this blank when adding sourcing to Wikipedia. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:02, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

Need help request from JPiechocki (talk)

Hello.

I need help with...

How do I get my sanbox into the main article? There is nowhere that says how to do that, or it is very confusing?

  • Hi JPiechocki, it looks like there's already an article for CROs, so you should look and see what you can merge into the existing article. Basically, just look to see if there's anything in your draft that isn't in the main article and if not, then look into merging it in. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:29, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

Publishing this page

--Salucci95 (talk) 21:07, 18 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Salucci95, are you talking about your sandbox draft? If so, there are two major issues with the page. The first is that the source you've used would be considered a self-published blog on Wikipedia, since we cannot verify the editorial oversight of the person who created the page, especially as they go through a basic web hosting service. (These web hosting services do not perform any sort of editorial oversight and only check to make sure that the patron is not violating a hard set rule, such as hosting illicit material or posting threats.) The other issue is that you look to have copied directly from this website. This is considered to be plagiarism and a copyright violation on Wikipedia, even if you were to link to the original site per the module on plagiarism and copyright.
On a side note, it looks like the person running the Mekoart website copied the material from somewhere else as well - it's actually pretty common for people to do this. This is another reason why you should avoid using self-published sources unless they're very widely considered to be an authoritative source. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:25, 19 December 2017 (UTC)

Help request

Hi Shalor - I was taking a look at the international volunteering page and wanted to make some edits. It unfortunately does not let me view the Talk page. It says: "This article is/was the subject of an educational assignment in 2014 Q3. Further details are available on the course page." Does this mean I cannot make any edits? It still allows me to open the "edit article" tab but I wanted to post in the talk page first. Any advice going forward would be appreciated! Thanks.--Sbhaiwala (talk) 02:47, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Hi Sbhaiwala, it looks like there wasn't any talk page conversations on the talk page's history, so that's why it looks like it's empty other than the assignment tag. As far as editing goes, absolutely feel free to edit the page! If an article is in the mainspace then that means that users can edit it and add content to the article in one form or fashion.
