Though we have a massive snowstorm coming up, spring is just around the corner! Personally, I am looking forward to warmer weather.

An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Two edit-a-thons coming up!

Hello there!

I'm pleased to tell you about two upcoming edit-a-thons:

  • This Tuesday, April 29, from 2:30 to 5:30 PM, we have the Freer and Sackler edit-a-thon. (Sorry for the short notice!)
  • On Saturday, May 10 we have the Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon, in partnership with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Washington, DC meetups in June

Greetings!

Wikimedia DC has yet another busy month in June. Whether you're a newcomer to Wikipedia or have years of experience, we're happy to see you come. Here's what's coming up:

  • On Wednesday, June 11 from 7 to 9 PM come to the WikiSalon at the Cove co-working space. Hang out with Wikipedia enthusiasts!
  • Saturday, June 14 is the Frederick County History Edit-a-Thon from 11 AM to 4 PM. Help improve local history on Wikipedia.
  • The following Saturday, June 21, is the June Meetup. Dinner and drinks with Wikipedians!
  • Come on Tuesday, June 24 for the Wikipedia in Your Library edit-a-thon at GWU on local and LGBT history.
  • Last but not least, on Sunday, June 29 we have the Phillips Collection Edit-a-Thon in honor of the Made in America exhibit.

Phillips edit-a-thon this Sunday (a draft on Agnes Weinrich)

Hi,

I'm attending the Phillips Collection edit-a-thon this Sunday. After I signed up I made a list of American artists represented in the Made in the USA exhibition who didn't have Wikipedia articles and selected Karl Knaths as my first target. In working on that page I became interested in his sister-in-law, Agnes Weinrich, also an artist, and, since she also lacked a Wikipedia article, I've begun a draft on her. I plan to work on both pages Sunday, if that fits with the program.

The Knaths page is exactly where you'd expect it. The Weinrich draft is in my sandbox, here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Delabrede/sandbox/Agnes_Weinrich

If you've time and interest, I welcome help in improving the Weinrich draft. I've completed the basic stuff and am taking a breather before double-checking facts, nosing out typos & misspellings, and dealing with awkward phrasings and the like.

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.

What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

Creating an institutional GLAM page

Hi Sarasays. We spoke earlier today at the SAA 2014 edit-a-thon session. I have a small group of editors who are museum staff members, and I'm looking to host a local cultural professional edit-a-thon later this year. Our contributions are on a small scale, and I think they'll stay that way for the time being. Right now I'm using a LibGuide as a home for editing tips, glass resources, and potential articles to edit. I know other GLAM orgs have their own pages (e.g. Wikipedia:GLAM/Smithsonian Institution) - should I create a page for my museum and put the resources I have gathered there? At what stage of wiki participation does an org merit a GLAM page? Do we need to keep up a certain level of activity? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks, extabulis (talk) 22:23, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

The Amazing History of Jerome Myers' daughter, Virginia

Hi Sarasays,

It's been a while since we last were in contact. I want to thank you again for your great help and generosity of time in getting the Ethel Myers article into proper shape. Quite a number of people have found it quite helpful. I've been thinking about you as I took on another project I had no idea even existed. It laid buried away in a cardboard box titled "Virginia Dances" in the family art storage room here in New York. I just discovered it last year. The box had not been opened in at least 60 years. Ethel must have packed it away among much of the art work. After dipping into it, I did begin a start on an article that I thought might be quite appropriate for inclusion in Wikipedia about one of the most exception dancers who ever lived and yet little is known about her today. The reason I stopped was I realized it was far too important a history to present without some really careful and confirmed research in hand. Its subject is Virginia Myers (my mother of all people much to my surprise) and many of the documents found extend back as far as 100 years or so to look at a little child of three who quickly became famous in just a few years because of her extraordinary creative performances in front of New York audiences as well as in an Edison Pictures film titled "The Dream Dances of Virginia Myers" which was distributed all over the United States as well as overseas.

Rather than tell you about it in a note, I should have most of the research in a work up form on the Internet where you can see it quite soon at any time you find convenient. I'll send you a link to it at one of my sites. It's not meant yet for public showing. I think I can promise that what she accomplished in the field of dance will blow your mind. That this kid existed at all and was able to do what she did is really hard to believe. Also its probably a fact that before that box was opened by me nobody on the planet, including even the most knowledgeable in the world of dance, would have ever heard of her. You'd have to even include me, her son, as one of the ignorant.

Anyway there are a couple of other projects I might like to discuss with you which may have somewhat controversial aspects about them. I'd also very much like your opinion about them as well as possibly your guidance. Perhaps if you have the time we might chat a bit about them on the phone. By the way all the documentation I discovered -- reviews, essays, articles and such about Virginia's early career will become a permanent part of the famous collection of the Jerome Robbins Dance Division at the Library for Performing Arts in Lincoln Center.

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Sarasays. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

Museum hacks and museum edits

Hello there!

Upcoming events:

  • February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
  • February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
  • February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

Invitation

Have you heard of the Kaffeeklatsch? It is a test area for women to hear and support each other. The idea came about as a result of a discussion at meta regarding my IdeaLab proposal (yet open) for WikiProject Women.

Now that the klatsch has survived an MfD and WMF legal has said that it does not violate the non discrimination policy,[2] I am looking for women editors who might like to join.

Although I have started a couple of discussions, they are not urgent. For now, the "Please introduce yourself" discussion is more important! I want to take it slow at first and build a small group before trying to address heavy topics or come up with big goals. For now, the klatsch is there as a sort of refuge. Hi, it's Barry Downes again. I have tried leaving messages for you because I did want to talk and get your advice. I was hoping to enlist your help in advising me in creating an article about the daughter of artists Jerome and Ethel Myers. Being Virginia's son I want to be very careful in what I write about her. Relatives being what they are. This is particularly true since I knew next to nothing about the early course of her life and the impact she made in the world of dance. My recent information only came out of finding a box in storage with a great deal of startling information about her career starting from the age of three. It is almost certain that there has not been a creative dancer before or since that ever matched her early accomplishments. Almost all those documents I discovered are now part of the permanent Virginia Myers collection in the Jerome Robbins Dance Library at Lincoln Center.

Since I haven't expanded the very brief start I did on her Wikipedia page, I am getting a severe warning that it will soon be eliminated because of lack of activity. I certainly don't want that to happen. Here is a link to the Internet site I setup with published newspaper and magazine articles, as well as essays, programs, letters, pictures and all manner of material attesting to the "genius" of her dancing without ever having had a single lesson, or any choreography prepared before performance after performance in front of major New York audiences. Also the Edison Film Company produced a film starring Virginia at the age of 5 and released as their 1,000 production in all their theaters in the U.S. as well as overseas.

First I'll just include below one article about Virginia to give you a taste of the kind of reviews she was getting.

Elsewhere in art, literary and dramatic circles, she is called a great tragedienne and compared to Eleonora Duse and the “Divine Sarah.” The fact is that Virginia has upset all calculations. She is the daughter of Jerome Myers, painter, of the East Side, and a born artist. At two years of age she danced to the tune of a toy piano so that her doll might be edified. They were an inspiration, but not an incentive. She tired of their stolidity at three. At four she made her first public appearance. This, at the Hotel Plaza for the benefit of the Bloomingdale Day Nursery. Since then Ruth St. Dennis at her studio, in Fifty-second street, pronounced Virginia “uncanny” and wept emotionally at the wonder of her dancing. Miss St. Denis had considered teaching her.

“But there is nothing to teach her,” she said, after seeing her. Madame Mattfeld, the Hansel of Humperdinck’s fair opera, has played accompaniments for her. Edna May, with her husband, Oscar Lewisohn, admired her at their home, along with a host of enthusiasts which included Miss Fola La Follette (Mrs. Middleton) and Lady Henry. Sylvia Pankhurst heard of Virginia in London and was given, on request, a special performance here.

Others contribute to the charm of her dancing—the painters Elmer McRae and Henry Fitch Taylor; Reginald Torrence, poet; Mr. Benjamin Wood, who gave a valentine party in her honor; Miss Mary Armour, daughter of Ogden Armour; Helen Morton and the pupils of the Finch School.

Hi, Sarasays! Please allow me to follow up on a project that was discussed at the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin a couple of weeks ago:

I am writing you to ask for your support for the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 250 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.

The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has recently passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Now, we are working with the Wikimedia Foundation staff to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.
