Sports people stubs

Thanks for creating stubs for members of national teams and others who clearly meet Wikipedia's notability requirements.

Be careful with stubs though - not all countries have stubs for all sports. If you preview your post and it says Template:....... in red instead of the usual sports-specific-bio-stub message, that's probably the problem.

I've already fixed Mahmoud Elkoumy for you (diff). Consider scanning Special:MyContributions for other red-linked stub templates and fixing them.

See Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting for details.

Again, thanks for creating these stubs.davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 17:27, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi davidwr, thanks for letting me know. Instead of fixing, I created Template:Egypt-volleyball-bio-stub and Template:Tunisia-volleyball-bio-stub :). Cheers Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 17:43, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. Be sure to update Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/List of stubs and Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/List of stubs. Oh, also add
{{WPBiography|living=yes|listas=Lastname, Firstname}}
or some similar template to the talk pages of all living people. For non-living people change living=yes to =no. For people from countries that "sort" their names by first name (and where that name matches the page title) the listas isn't necessary (the listas= should match the DEFAULTSORT on the article page). davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 17:49, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the inspiration

You inspired me to create Gigantes del Sur, based on es:Gigantes del Sur from the Spanish Wikipedia.

That page still needs some cleanup, so dive right in if you want to. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 23:27, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi davidwr, great!! I adjusted the table a bit. Good work :) Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 22:49, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages

Thank you for your recent articles, including Leandro Macías, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Thanks to them, WikiProject members are more easily able to defend your work from deletion, or simply help try to improve it further. Feel free to ask me any questions if you'd like more information about using those talk page templates. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:17, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

Please do not bold a non-verbatim reiteration of the title

Please do not bold a non-verbatim reiteration of the article title in lead, as you did in European Track Championships – Women's elimination race and other articles. "[I]f the article's title is absent from the first sentence, do not apply the bold style to related text that does appear" (MOS:BOLDTITLE). Thank you. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 22:54, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi Finnusertop, Thank you for letting me know. I did't know I did that.. Sorry. I just created the page from a bold link on the main page. So is it always that a bold wikilink becomes a bold page name? How can you see it? Cheers, Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 23:07, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
Hello, Sander.v.Ginkel. Text is surrounded by three apostrophes to make it '''bold'''. This is only used when the title of the article is repeated in the lead (with some exceptions, like the one I just told you about). It does not matter if a link you clicked to create that article was bold or not; if the wikitext on your article has those three apostrophes surrounding text, it becomes bold. But don't worry, this is a very minor issue and I've seen very experienced editors make the same mistake. Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 23:17, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

A beer for you!

Article talk pages

Hi Sander! There is nothing wrong with creating many articles, but if you want to do that, I'm sure you want to make sure you do it the best way possible. When you are creating these volleyball biographies, could you also make the article talk pages and tag them with {{WikiProject Biography}} and the relevant parameters |living=yes|class=Stub|listas=Surname, Firstname|sports-work-group=yes ? Consider also adding {{WikiProject Volleyball}} with |class=Stub . Cheers, Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 22:33, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

Which echoes my request above. Please, consider them. Cheers, --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 05:42, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Hi Finnusertop, I made a list of all volleyball categories, and made a bot request to Tagg them all for WP Volleyball. So all pages will be tagged with WP Biography and WP Volleyball. See User talk:Yobot. Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 16:59, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Yumi Nakano

The article Yumi Nakano has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

lack of notability.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I guess this edit was an error? Dan Koehl (talk) 01:16, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi Dan Koehl, thank you for dropping the message. But in fact, it wasn't an error. The time trial started in a zoo and riders rode after the start along the animals. That's why I added the WP Zoo to the page. Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 12:05, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

DEFAULTSORT

When you're creating new articles on people from many different countries, you may find the guidelines at WP:NAMESORT helpful in order to get the DEFAULTSORT right. In particular, Chinese (including Taiwanese) and Korean names are generally written with the surname first, and thus there's no need to reverse it for the DEFAULTSORT. (When in doubt: if there's a hyphen, that's nearly always the given name. If one part of the name is shorter than the other, then that's nearly always the surname.) Regards, 210.6.254.106 (talk) 01:05, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

Czech volleybal

Hi Sander. The source http://todor66.com/ contains many errors and I suggest to you to not use it on Wikipedia. I suspect that the player Eva Adamod (an unusual form of a Czech female surname) is actually Eva Adamová. The Czech article doesn't mention her participation at Sao Paolo WC in 1994, but it notes her collaboration with the "famous" coach Milan Kafka (who coached Czech team in Sao Paolo as Milan Kanfka, according to http://todor66.com/). The names Svetlana Cenkove or Dita Jerarkova are almost certainly wrong and I can't identify the real names of the players. There's a reliable information containing correct names and Czech line up at Sao Paolo WC at the official website of the Czech Volleyball Federation. Here is a photo of the Czech team in Sao Paolo. There are 13 players on the photo but http://todor66.com/ mentions 18 which is strange. I think that adding missing information to Wikipedia is commendable, but we should also strive for maximum accuracy. --Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 08:08, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Vejvančický, thank you for your message. I digged into it :). Yes I see that todor66.com/ has many mistakes.. However it is the only page I can find on the internet with the names of the teams, or do you have a link of the official Sao Paolo WC website? Usually a team at the world championships consists of 12 players. So I think the picutre witch 13 players will probably be the 12 players + 1 reserve. So the players listed will be the full team of that year, that's the reason I also didn't add that they played at the WC because they didn't play all. I'll change the page so that will be more clear. As all Czech female surenames ends on 'a' I moved Eva Adamod to Eva Adamodá. I found out that Dita Jerarkova has to be Dita Jerabkova. Probably Svetlana Cenkove has to be Svetlana Cenkova, but I can't find anything about her.

Same person two articles

Hello Sander.v.Ginkel, keep up the good work. These articles: Theodoros Chatzantoniou, Georgios Drakovits, Marios Giurdas, Nikolas Samaras, Antonis Tsakiropoulos have to be deleted because they already exist.

Theodoros Chatziantoniou, Georgios Ntrakovits, Marios Gkiourdas, Nikos Samaras, Antonios Tsakiropoulos are the main articles and they should be kept as they are, because they are pretty much expanded and very well sourced.

See you around and congats on your work. Gtrbolivar (talk) 03:19, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

"Former [...]"

Greetings. I would like to let you know that the format you are using for former athletes is grammatically incorrect: "[Name] is a former [nationality]" makes no sense at all, as there are very few instances where a person is made stateless, or a "former" citizen of a country. e.g., In the case of an athlete from Canada, they cannot be a "former Canadian"—no such thing; it just doesn't work. Instead, they are a "Canadian former [athletic occupation]". Therefore, the correct way to present such an example is: "[Name] is a Canadian former figure skater", etc., which correctly indicates that a person of a given nationality is a former athlete, not a former citizen. Hopefully you are able to bulk-rectify this on the articles you have corrected; so far I have only corrected all the ones pertaining to Finnish athletes. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 19:00, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi Mac Dreamstate, thanks for the message. Yes I see your point. As I will create over the next months probably thousands of more pages, it's great that you tell it. However for the previous pages I created, would be about a thousand articles, I don't know how to resolve it. Do you know if a bot could be created that can solve the problem? But from now on I will write Canadian former... (or do you prefer retired Canadian...)? Thanks again, Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 19:07, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
A bot... oh man, if only. I've been clamouring for one of those ever since I spotted the "former [...]" mistake pretty much everywhere, but for now all I can do is go around fixing it manually whenever I have the patience. As for "retired", there is no guideline for it on WP, but I personally prefer to use "former" instead of "retired"; many former athletes still work in some form of employment right up until old age (especially if they never got rich, or switched to working as a TV presenter, etc.), so to call them "retired" outright often ends up being rather inaccurate. Ashlei Neimer

Hi Sander.v.Ginkel, I'm sorry that I did not notify you about Ashlei Neimer. Is there a reason that you think that it should be kept? From what I could see, he does not meet the criteria at WP:SPORTCRIT by being the subject of "multiple published non-trivial secondary sources which are reliable, intellectually independent, and independent of the subject." If you would like to contest the deletion, you can always bring it up at Wikipedia:Deletion review. Thanks, Natg 19 (talk) 18:11, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi Natg 19, Yes I think he is notable. I found several seconday sources. I recreated the page to show. Put them up for deletion if you like so we can have a better discussion. Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 18:49, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
I've started a discussion about this matter at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2016 January 28 (as you should have done instead of just re-creating the article). Pinging Natg 19 as well. Deor (talk) 23:43, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
Hi Deor, Thank you. I didn't know the deletion review process, otherwise I would have done it. Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 07:34, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

gymnast articles

You added a ton of gymnastic articles. In the Infobox's |gender= parameter, it is not w or m. It is Female and male. w doesn't register. Bgwhite (talk) 09:56, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi Bgwhite, thank you for you message, and yes this is a big error... I digged into it. The parameters are |gender=m or |gender=f. But because the articles are like.. " - Men's qualification"; " - Women's qualification"; " - Women's balance beam" etc. I used the |gender=w. Because I think it's logic, I proposed this extra parameter. See Template talk:Infobox gymnast#New subheading. Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 20:59, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Ashlei Nemer, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Please wait for the deletion review to conclude, and do not re-create the article unless you get a consensus for it. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:36, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Actually, no, I've restored it so the deletion review can examine it, and it's trending towards acceptance so far. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:39, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
