Moorhen

I would have left the nomination there. Moorhens are a good contender and many of the older nominations are going to be archived soon anyway. Sabine's Sunbird talk 03:15, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

California Condor stuff

After you told me about the redirect from Gymnogyps to California Condor, I decided it was easier to show how one could move the evolution section than to explain what I was thinking. No doubt if you or others don't like this organization, you'll go back to the old one or try for something better. Otherwise I'm glad if I did anything helpful! —JerryFriedman 22:13, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

I have moved Rufous-crowned Sparrow/Sandbox/CapeHatterasLight to User:Rufous-crowned Sparrow/Sandbox/CapeHatterasLight. Similarly User:Rufous-crowned Sparrow/Sandbox/CaliforniaCondor. -- RHaworth 06:15, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Oops. Thanks.Rufous-crowned Sparrow 13:17, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Just a brief note: The photo you removed actually does show a Common Ground Dove. It was initially uploaded to wiki as an Inca Dove (and also featured on that page, twice, despite an updated text below the photo itself), but this ID was mistaken. Hence the misleading file name. Wikimania in Atlanta!

Hi! I noticed your involvement on U.S. South-related articles, categories and WikiProjects, and I wanted to let you know about a bid we're formulating to get next year's Wikimania held in Atlanta! If you would like to help, be sure to sign your name to the "In Atlanta" section of the Southeast team portion of the bid if you're in town, or to the "Outside Atlanta" section if you still want to help but don't live in the city or the suburbs. If you would like to contribute more, please write on my talk page, the talk page of the bid, or join us at the #wikimania-atlanta IRC chat on freenode.org. Have a great day!

P.S. While this is a template for maximum efficiency, I would appreciate a note on my talk page so I know you got the message, and what you think. This is time-sensitive, so your urgent cooperation is appreciated. :) Mike H. I did "That's hot" first! 22:42, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Barnstar Thanks and info link

Thanks so much for the 'Random Acts of Kindness' Barnstar. My first ever. ;-)
I posted a few things about the map under your request on the WikiProject Birds talk page. Please be sure to check them out if you haven't already. 'Card 19:25, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Cali Condor

For one citation this is the syntax: <ref> details in here</ref> . If you want to use that same reference in several spots you can use this syntax: <ref name="NameOfRef"> details in here</ref> then later on <ref name="NameOfRef"/> will bring up the same ref. Congratulations on getting the California Condor article to Featured Article status! Your efforts are admired and appreciated.Cszmurlo 01:04, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

re: King Vulture

I'd read your post on the Wikiproject Birds talkpage which said that you were working on the article in your sanbox- and apparently I promptly forgot all about it! It's no problem at all, and thanks for telling me. Cheers, Jude. 00:56, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

As far as reffing - to diversify and also make it look more reputable if website X clearly got a fact from book Y, then (eg range of King vulture) I'll get the books details for the ref. Some reviewers at FAC get a bit dismayed and vote accordingly if all refs at bottom are web ones. I got a load of bird books but mostly all aussie ones which doesn't help much here :) cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 20:16, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
No the article isn't overreferenced -always better over than under these days. More diversity is good. If there is more depth you find elsewhere then add it but it is not essential. cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 00:38, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
You're welcome. Hah, I just realized that I forgot to write in my support at its FAC! I'll run off and do that now. Cheers, Jude. 00:38, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
It now has a shiny new range map! I downloaded some photoshop software and spent the afternoon figuring it out, so now I can make range maps, as long as they're relatively simple. It's actually not as difficult as I expected it to be. I also made one for Turkey Vulture and the Greater Yellow-headed (based on the IUCN data). Cheers, Jude. 22:26, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
You're very welcome! To make it, I took a blank world map[2] from Wikimedia Commons, then used a photo editing program to color it in. I used Ultimate Paint, which is downloadable for free[3], but other programs probably work just as well. It took me a little while to figure out how to use the program, but after that it was pretty easy. --Jude. 22:59, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Greater Yellow-headed Vulture

I've been working on the Greater Yellow-headed Vulture article, and I can't seem to find any references that mention number of eggs laid, age of sexual maturity, courtship displays, or anything of that nature. I was wondering if there are any sources that you've seen while writing the other New World Vultures articles that talk about general reproduction characteristics for either Cathartes or Cathartidae. I thought that these could be used if there are absolutely no reference to be found for the Greater Yellow-headed Vulture specifically (which may be the case). Cheers, Jude. 21:47, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

My local library doesn't have a copy of that book (unfortunately). I expanded the lead of Greater Yellow-headed Vulture, but I think that otherwise I've gotten as far as I can with the references I have available. How much longer do you think it'll have to be to get to GA status? Jude. 20:38, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
I've already looked for photos at Flickr, where there are photos, but none with a usable license, and there for photos taken by government employees(which would be free license), but haven't found anything. Do you think a photo is absolutely necessary for GA, since it appears that there are not free-licensed images of the Greater Yellow-headed Vulture? Obviously, it would be infinitely preferable to have an image, but the GA criteria says that "The presence of images is not, in itself, a requirement for Good articles." Also, I'll add another paragraph to the article on the reasons why it was separated from the Lesser Yellow-headed vulture. Cheers, Jude. 19:00, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
I haven't seen anything about GY-hVs in culture, zoos, or anything of the kind. There's really not a lot of information on them out there; I can't even find a source that gives a weight for them. As far as the King Vulture article, it looks pretty good. I'll add anything that my bird encyclopedia has on it (the only bird book I own), and check for typos and so forth. But I'd support it at FAC. I can't make a range map, though. Jude. 01:03, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
I was thinking about nominating the Greater Yellow-headed Vulture for GA; all the information that I could possibly find has been added. Do you think it would pass? --heyjude. 19:07, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your suggestions. I just nominated the GY-hV for GA. I also made a map for the Andean Condor, which I put in the article. Cheers, heyjude. 23:02, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

I'm terribly sorry, but I just haven't found the time. I tried a few days ago, but was interrupted. I think you should close the candidacy. I'll try to work on it in the future and try again. Thanks for your time. - Mtmelendez (Talk|UB|Home) 01:37, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

King Vulture

I saw it, I try and review all animalia, but I've been busy, and I'm oncall this week. I'll see what I can do. -Ravedave 20:32, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Swiflets

Thanks for the kind words, I'll see what I can do Jimfbleak 06:07, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

I've done the refs - is there a good way to integrate the general ref (Swifts) with the in-line cites? What this article really needs is an image, but afaik none of the members of this genus have a photo (swiftlets are not an ideal subject for photography) Jimfbleak 06:49, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

New World Vultures

The Greater Yellow-headed Vulture just passed GA. That was surprisingly fast! I just filled out the Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture article a bit more; it's very much like the GY-h V article, and about the same length now. I'll let it sit a day or two so that it'll be "stable", then nominate it for GA as well. --heyjude. 19:46, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

A lot of the information on the LY-h V is applicable either to New World Vultures in general (taxonomy, the lack of septum, lack of syrinx -most of the physiology), or to Cathartes (the ability to smell decaying flesh, the eyelashes). I'll run through it and make sure that I didn't copy-paste anything that only applies to the GY-h V, though. I think the Turkey Vulture article is nearly ready for FA; I still have to get around to locating descriptions on the subspecies, though. We're making a lot of progress! Cheers, heyjude. 00:03, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your help with the Turkey Vulture article! I haven't seen any good photos of the Yellow-headeds, unfortunately. The illustrations look very nice, and the articles looks so much better with images in the taxoboxes! Cheers, heyjude. 17:25, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
I did some work on American Black Vulture this weekend, and I think it'll be about ready for FAC sometime this week. It's about the same length as Turkey Vulture now. If you have the time, could you take a look at it and tell me what you think? Cheers, heyjude. 20:39, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
Alright. Thanks so much! heyjude. 21:28, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Peregrine rv

Hi R-cS - saw you'd reverted an addition by User:Miriamelise, and posted a warning on their talk page; right on the reverting, as the addition didn't add anything new to the article, but it wasn't vandalism, just a newbie not really knowing well what to do. "Please don't bite the newcomers!" It would be better to direct them to the help page or the tutorial, rather than post warnings - thanks! MPF 22:45, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Reread the edit and have to agree with you. I'll fix up the talk page. Rufous-crowned Sparrow 16:17, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

One in flight image, hope it captures the id features. I am unable to find a closeup image of the head which I would like for the sitting illustration. I am not able to find high quality image to do comparisons of the two species and their wing tip versus tail positions to produce identification quality illustrations. One of the external links on the pages (VIREO) needs a login to see high-res images. 16:36, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Added another illustration, not entirely satisfactory, I would like other side profile photographs to fix some of the details and posture. So do let me know if you find any better photographs, and I can improve on this illustration. Shyamal 11:55, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Variegated Fairy-wren

In Australia we alternate - I just asked my colleague and he spells it with an 's' as do most folks but I often used 'z'. We do always stick the 'u' in though (colour etc.). Not fussed. cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 22:28, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Northern Cardinal

Thanks so much for spotting that. I couldn't remember how to spell granivorus, so I copy-pasted it from the Goldfinch article and forgot to change the name. Seems like I'm always doing that sort of thing! Anyway, thanks again! heyjude. 11:55, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Your Wikibreak

Wikibreak

Hi Rufous, hope you are enjoying your break. I wanted to leave a note now (so I don't forget later!) that even if the Javan Rhino FAC has closed when you get back I'd still love to have your input on it for two reasons. 1) No article is ever finished, and so I'm always happy to work on improvements and 2) I want to have a good framework in place for working on other rhinos. I've already started chipping away at Sumatran Rhinoceros a bit (check out the sound files I linked in communication. Pretty cool, huh?) and I know you're a really good animals editor and would love any input at any phase. Happy November to you! --JayHenry 07:04, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Barn Swallow

Thanks for all the effort you've put into this and for your support - still no one has opposed it yet, so fingers crossed!. I've fixed the area units and remodelled the altitude bit to include a more general Birdlife reference and a specific NAm ref. I've rewritten the Gilbert White bit, which I tend to think is relevant because of his importance and his error in this matter, but if you still think it sits badly, please chop the sentence. Many thanks, Jimfbleak (talk) 08:21, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

One minor point, the punctuation of martin was changed to "'martin". instead of "martin." by a British editor. I noticed that you changed it to the US use, but the rest of the article is in British, so I've restored Meeg's version -hope that's OK. Jimfbleak (talk) 09:06, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
No problem, the American style looks odd to me! A classic case I came across in another article was a mini edit war between "a herb" (brit) and "an herb" (US), where neither side had realised that the "h" was sounded in Europe, but silent in the US. Jimfbleak (talk) 06:26, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your help copyediting. Not one of my strongest suits. Sabine's Sunbird talk 23:55, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

Footprint

Hey Rufous, thanks again for the image! The second print I mentioned is one recently reported from Montana. I wasn't aware there's a second print associated with the Philmont one, odd that it doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere... are you sure it's from the same animal as the first? Dinoguy2 (talk) 22:30, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

What's next?

Thanks again for the helpful review. I think I am going to keep working on rhinoceros articles :) I've got a pretty good knowledge base now, so the next ones will be easier going I hope. Takes a lot of work to get up to speed on any type of article. Debating between Black Rhinoceros and Indian Rhinoceros... might have to flip a coin. It's funny... animals aren't a huge interest in real life, but I've gotten into a rhythm on wiki with 'em. I like to think that there's a kid out there reading the articles who's going to get inspired and grow up to figure out a way to save all the poor beasties. --JayHenry (talk) 06:50, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Bird

Your edit to Bird was pure vandalism, you edited a simple fact that you are dening the public to see! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Westvoja (talkcontribs) 22:08, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

I know the current classification of birds is Aves but the people have the right to Know what is currently being arguied about consurning classification, and the reason why I didn't add any reference is becase it is already listed, maybe not in bird but in other dinosaur related articles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Westvoja (talkcontribs) 22:24, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Crested Shelduck

Here is my attempt. Vermiculations and fine patterns are a bit of a problem to draw easily in Inkscape so I have skipped it for flat colours. Happy holidays ! Shyamal (talk) 06:13, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

I have attempted the colour corrections and vermiculation of the female as well. Feel free to let me know if there are any other alterations needed. Would have been nice if there was a real photograph to work with. Shyamal (talk) 06:56, 25 December 2007 (UTC)
I ran a quick copyedit through this, fixing things like capitalisation, sing/plural etc. One thing I left is that, in the references. the "retrieved" date for the IUCN link has a completely different format to the others. Jimfbleak (talk) 07:38, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

GA

I don't have a problem with COI, I don't think anyone checking our GA reviews could spot anything too cosy about my review of the shiner article. I did think of doing the shelduck, but since it's short, I thought it would soon get picked up anyway. I've already got two reviews on the go. I think as long as we don't review each other's article simultaneously or exclusively, there's no problem. Jimfbleak (talk) 14:52, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

One positive thing is that with the current GA backlog, is that I keep checking through and thinking "what else can I add?" so hopefully the worst of the errors have been fixed! Jimfbleak (talk) 14:56, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
