Contentious topics procedure adopted

You are receiving this message because you are subscribed to updates on the Arbitration Committee's discretionary sanctions review process.

The Arbitration Committee has concluded the 2021-22 review of the contentious topics system (formerly known as discretionary sanctions), and its final decision is viewable at the revision process page. As part of the review process, the Arbitration Committee has resolved by motion that:

The above proposals that are supported by an absolute majority of unrecused active arbitrators are hereby enacted. The drafting arbitrators (CaptainEek, L235, and Wugapodes) are directed to take the actions necessary to bring the proposals enacted by this motion into effect, including by amending the procedures at WP:AC/P and WP:AC/DS. The authority granted to the drafting arbitrators by this motion expires one month after enactment.

The Arbitration Committee thanks all those who have participated in the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process and all who have helped bring it to a successful conclusion. This motion concludes the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process.

This motion initiates a one-month implementation period for the updates to the contentious topics system. The Arbitration Committee will announce when the initial implementation of the Committee's decision has concluded and the amendments made by the drafting arbitrators in accordance with the Committee's decision take effect. Any editors interested in the implementation process are invited to assist at the implementation talk page, and editors interested in updates may subscribe to the update list.

Sock advice

You had previously mentioned at the SPI case page for Andrew5 that stronger measures might be warranted if disruption continues. This person continues to IP hop and edit (including edit warring) at multiple articles (e.g. here and here). I can bring it to SPI if you thinks that's best, but I didn't know if you had different measures in mind at your last comment. TornadoLGS (talk) 21:29, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

  • Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 9 January 2023.

Recent changes

  • On a user's contributions page, you can filter it for edits with a tag like 'reverted'. Now, you can also filter for all edits that are not tagged like that. This was part of a Community Wishlist 2022 request. [1]
  • A new function has been used for gadget developers to add content underneath the title on article pages. This is considered a stable API that should work across all skins. Documentation is available. [2]
  • One of our test wikis is now being served from a new infrastructure powered by Kubernetes (read more). More Wikis will switch to this new infrastructure in early 2023. Please test and let us know of any issues. [3]

Problems

  • Last week, all wikis had no edit access for 9 minutes. This was caused by a database problem. [4]

Changes later this week

  • There is no new MediaWiki version this week or next week.
  • The word "Reply" is very short in some languages, such as Arabic ("ردّ"). This makes the Discussion tools button on talk pages difficult to use. An arrow icon will be added to those languages. This will only be visible to editors who have the Beta Feature turned on. [5] [6]

Future changes

  • Edits can be automatically "tagged" by the system software or the Edit filter configuration system. Those tags link to a help page about the tags. Soon they will also link to Recent Changes to let you see other edits tagged this way. This was a Community Wishlist 2022 request. [7]
  • The Trust & Safety tools team have shared new plans for building the Private Incident Reporting System. The system will make it easier for editors to ask for help if they are harassed or abused.
  • Realtime Preview for Wikitext is coming out of beta as an enabled feature for every user of the 2010 Wikitext editor in the week of January 9, 2023. It will be available to use via the toolbar in the 2010 Wikitext editor. The feature was the 4th most popular wish of the Community Wishlist Survey 2021.

Automatic move-protection of DYK pages

There's a discussion resolved in favour of move-protecting DYK articles for their appearance on the Main Page – if I wrote some code in Python/Pywikibot, would you be interested in managing the task with an adminbot? Block log

I do not see the block in my personal block log. Am I good after all? That would seriously relieve a LOT of stress that this has caused. Also, I'd like to continue sending some, since literally everyone else was appreciative and is even STILL sending my thanks and good wishes as well, but I WILL NOT start back up without first receiving some seriously positive consensus. Where might you suggest that I seek to ask such a question so that it is fair and widely seen? I do not wish to be seen as WP:CANVASSING my ask either. Believe it or not, I take editing on the encyclopedia very, very seriously. Maybe you and I will come across each other in other ways one day too, and I try my best to have a sterling reputation for only producing edits of value. — Moops ⋠T⋡ 18:27, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

@Moops I'm sure you didn't mean any harm by this, but please understand that mass editing like this, even if it's for something as innocuous as a holiday greeting, is generally considered inappropriate. From what I could see, it sure looked like an automated process, given the high rate of speed the edits were happening and the amount of time it had been happening. My first concern was to prevent disruption to the project, hence the block. As long as you don't start doing this again, we're fine. -- RoySmith (talk) 18:39, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Many people are sad and alone. Myself included. And it can be incredibly nice and kind for them to receive a simple message like this. I am not sending to all editors on the platform, only the top by edit count, and only this one time per year. And many of them I HAVE had an edit history interaction with in some way, shape, or form. RoySmith. If I send these at a slower rate, or something else, would that be tolerable without risk of being blocked again? Thoughts MarnetteD? I am trying not to step on any toes here, but this was really how I planned on spending my new year was to welcome in some of the top editors by edit count with a pleasant 'Happy New Years' greeting. I hope to be able to continue if at all possible! At least for the top few thousand and then I'd be done. Just for their continued contributions and great work. By the way, I do check each and every page before sending the 'Happy New Years' template, and do not send to blocked users, retired users, or many other users that I felt were not recently or actively contributing to the current building of the encyclopedia. You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our Wikipedia Day 2023 at Jefferson Market Library in Greenwich Village, a Wikipedia and Public Domain Day celebration and mini-conference as part of birthday festivities marking the project's founding in 2001. In addition to the party, the event features presentations by Jason Scott of the Internet Archive and Anne Hunnell Chen of the International (Digital) Dura-Europos Archive, panels, and, of course, lightning talks. Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues!

Recent changes

  • You can use tags to filter edits in the recent changes feed or on your watchlist. You can now use tags to filter out edits you don't want to see. Previously you could only use tags to focus on the edits with those tags. [8]
  • Special:WhatLinksHere shows all pages that link to a specific page. There is now a prototype for how to sort those pages alphabetically. You can see the discussion in the Phabricator ticket.
  • You can now use the thanks function on your watchlist and the user contribution page. [9]
  • A wiki page can be moved to give it a new name. You can now get a dropdown menu with common reasons when you move a page. This is so you don't have to write the explanation every time. [10]
  • Matrix is a chat tool. You can now use matrix: to create Matrix links on wiki pages. [11]
  • You can filter out translations when you look at the recent changes on multilingual wikis. This didn't hide translation pages. You can now also hide subpages which are translation pages. [12]

Changes later this week

  • Realtime preview for wikitext is a tool which lets editors preview the page when they edit wikitext. It will be enabled for all users of the 2010 wikitext editor. You will find it in the editor toolbar.
  • Some wikis will be in read-only for a few minutes because of a switch of their main database. It will be performed on 10 January at 07:00 UTC (targeted wikis) and on 12 January at 07:00 UTC (targeted wikis).
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 January. It will be on all wikis from 12 January (calendar).

Concern about bias of a user

The user Pngeditor is misappropriating sources and using them to enhance their own narrative, the things that they link to the source are not mentioned in the source and have been completely twisted from what the source says. Salandarianflag (talk) 22:31, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

For example in the Mercaz Harav article, they wrote promotes Israeli settlements, but in the source it does not say they promote Israeli settlements. Salandarianflag (talk) 22:33, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

Thank you. Re: {{r}} v {{cite book}}, I simply haven't mastered the various formats, templates, etc., nor have I memorised the MOS (and best practice thereof). Not sure if that's a sufficient or justifiable reason, but it's the best I can offer by way of an explanation (lots to learn). Thanks for drawing my attention to these nuances. It's been something of a long march re: these images, but I thought it was resolved (or at least that some sort of détente had been established). The funny thing is, the editor who suggested I nominate the article for DYK in the first place was actually involved in the kerfuffle over the photos on some level (on the Commons side), and they have been super helpful and supportive throughout since they realised I had nothing to do with that matter.
The complexities of image use on Wikipedia seem intractable (at least to a this newcomer). It often has felt like a waste of my time and energy delving into this aspect of the Wikiproject, and I have given up to a degree (at least for the time being). Cl3phact0 (talk) 15:57, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, I hear you on the image use policies. I've had all sorts of images I've uploaded taken down for what I consider absurd reasons, but it's all just part of life on wikipedia. In general, the folks on commons are ultra-conservative about copyright issues, which is a good thing, even if it can sometimes be annoying. -- RoySmith (talk) 16:00, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
Maybe I've mis-read ultra-conservativism for tacit smugness and apparent glee. Could just be me (probably is), however it seems that my travailles over there on the Commons side of the divide have resulted in, well, not much of worth actually — especially when weighed and measured against the time-sucking vortex of a cold bath it's been trying. None too inviting or appealing a place that, alas. A bit alienating, actually (though they do seem to enjoy themselves tremendously doing whatever good and important things they do do). I say: Godspeed.
The fact is, information is often better retained and assimilated (especially by certain kinds of people) when accompanied by imagery, so it's truly a shame (in my view) that more and better visual material seems to be anathema to the folks who seem to be the keepers of this particular gate. Anyhow, enough of that, it's all just my subjective (and thus possibly likely flawed) point of view.

Problems

  • The URLs in "prev" links on page history now contain diff=prev&oldid=[revision ID] in place of diff=[revision ID]&oldid=[revision ID]. This is to fix a problem with links pointing to incorrect diffs when history was filtered by a tag. Some user scripts may break as a result of this change. [13]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 January. It will be on all wikis from 19 January (calendar).
  • Some changes to the appearance of talk pages have only been available on Talk: and User talk: namespaces. These will be extended to other talk namespaces, such as Wikipedia talk:.   • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 24 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 25 January. It will be on all wikis from 26 January (calendar).

DYK-Tools-Bot remnants?

Hi, am I correct in assuming that {{DYK-Tools-Bot was here}}, Category:Pending DYK biographies, and Category:Pending DYK American hooks can be removed from all nomination templates, and the only ones that should remain are {{Pending DYK biographies}} and {{Pending DYK American hooks}}? Yes. {{DYK-Tools-Bot was here}} and the raw category tags are obsolete at this point and could be removed.
I did get a complaint that {{Pending DYK American hooks}} should be changed to {{Pending DYK US hooks}}. I haven't 100% decided what I want to do there, but I suspect I'll do the rename at some point. -- RoySmith (talk) 20:45, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

@Mandarax Thank you for undertaking this cleanup task. It's been on my list of things I was going to get to eventually, but I really appreciate you doing it for me. I am curious, however, about Special:Diff/1137625062, from a technical point of view. I got a ping "Mandarax mentioned you in an edit summary on Template:Did you know nominations/Charles Redd". But I don't see where the mention of my user name is actually in the edit summary. How did that work? -- RoySmith (talk) 17:18, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
You're welcome for the cleanup. I removed all "raw category tags". I considered replacing them with the corresponding templates (where they weren't already present), but I saw that the bot had rescanned pages it had visited in its previous incarnation, and I assumed you had refined the algorithm to exclude some which were previously miscategorized. In this case, I happened to notice that it was a US hook, so I added the template. As for the ping, I didn't think it needed to be visible in the history, so I piped it to a blank ([[User:RoySmith| ]]). MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 17:44, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
