You have three choices: First, edit an article like you would normally edit an article. Add categories to the bottom of the page such as these examples (you can try them on your userpspace):

[[Category:Wikipedians]] ::[[Category:Foo]]

Two: Activate HotCat on your widgets option in Special:Preferences. You should see some +, +-, and - buttons on the category bar.
