You added the "Title" section to this page a while ago, which was tagged as OR. I moved it to the talkpage with a query in January: I notice that shortly afterwards you (a) replaced the section, without (b) addressing the issue on the talk page, or (c) adding a citation needed, or (d) explaining what you were doing in the edit summary.

Hello Robin and thank you for adding the interesting Spitfire story to Gone for a Burton. Is this material copied from http://spitfiresite.com/2012/01/modification-xxx-beer-carrying-spitfires.html or a similar source? If so then unfortunately their copyright policy does not allow it to be copied to Wikipedia. Also, it is unclear how the tale relates to the phrase Gone for a Burton. For these reasons, I have removed it for the time being. If you can explain how it is relevant, you may want to add a short summary with a reference to the original source. PJM - the route forward[edit]

This looks like a great find. I'm not sure what to do with the personal papers you have referred to elsewhere. It is allowed to scan them and upload them here, but, and this is important that means that they are released for ever into the wild. Think hard before you do that.

You may find that editing here is addictive, but read this essay before you get carried away. Above all we need full citations. The freeBMD site is interesting, but you must quote the record, not the FreeBMD url itself. Use it to find what you seek and then quote the source document. Be aware that such items are primary sources. Items like the Montreal Gazette quote his death as January 1941, for example, and are at variance with the death date stated in the article, and the presidency of the Balovale Commission Fiddle Faddle 13:36, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]


Thanks for your input. I have a VAST amount of "stuff" inherited from my parents, which I am trying to scan and distribute as fast as I can[1]. I don't CARE about seeking references / citations for the stuff I put up! Someone else can do that - I've got "better" things to do, that only I can! But first... They are probably all true, but unfortunately that is not the question in Wikipedia, the (slightly different) question is if it can be verified.

Thank you for tweaking it. I have FAR more "important" (to me) things to do than try to learn all the nuances of what you mention (which I really don't understand - nor do I particularly want to, Sorry !) Wikipedia's "rule" is "Be bold". I put the stuff up. If you (or anybody) is not happy with the "presentation", that is their problem, not mine. The whole point of editing a Wikipedia article is to "improve" it. This can be done by adding to it - as I have done - OR by tweaking it the way you have done. Simply "reverting" is (a) extremely rude; and (b) does not "improve" the article. It actually detracts from it.
As an example, my mother unveiled the Stone on Brownsea. I checked the date in her diary. What "reference" could I give for that ??? Well, what I did was to transcribe her diary entry, post it on one of my WebSites and then use that as the "reference". But I have 70 of her page-a-day diaries. Yes; my aim is to transcribe them all and make them available. I also have 30 of her (400 x 270 x 65) albums; and 40 years of family correspondence (3 slightly different copies of each), etc., etc., etc.....RobinClay (talk) 12:24, 11 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The concentration camps, arguably the most significant and contentious British strategy of the war, and the issues raised about them by Emily Hobhouse and others like Lloyd-George, all took place in 1901 while the war only ended on 31 May 1902. The paragraph is therefore not about events AFTER the War like you seem to believe. True, the article is about the campaign medal, but the war is what the medal was awarded for and a brief mention about the applicable campaign is therefore not inappropriate.

Hi RobinClay,

I have reverted your recent edit to History of rail transport as it contains several significant errors. I was surprised when I looked ta your contribution history to see you have been editing on Wikipedia for more than a decade. I say surprised because you made some extremely basic errors. The most glaring was you were linking to other articles using the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_rail_transport_in_Zambia] form. The right way to link to that Wikipedia article is: [[History of rail transport in Zambia]]. Some of them you just left as bare links like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_rail_transport_in_Zambia; that's particularly egregious.

You should also not leave comments like "These headings are in anticipation of further information being added shortly, collecting together existing Wikipedia articles.." in articles. You do not need to leave instructions on editing in the article itself; articles are for subject content only. Then you linked to History of rail transport in Zambia in the section for Botswana - they are separate countries. And youn linked to History of rail transport in Zambia in the section for Zimbabwe! Your edits were also entirely unsourced. After 11 years editing here, how do you not know that you need to source information you add to articles? I see you have been repeatedly asked to cite sources. Why are you still adding unsourced material to articles?

There is a rule that competency is required to edit Wikipedia. Please take a moment to refresh your understanding of the basic policies and guidelines for editing. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
