Nice work[edit]

Nice work on Out of Doors (Bartók). I found it while browsing through Category:Compositions by Béla Bartók. I hadn't heard the work before, but I knew about a free recording of it from Pandora Records and decided to check it out. The depiction of the night in the Night Music movement is nothing short of amazing ... you can almost feel the countryside around you. The other Bartók works available on Pandora Music are the first two movements of the Suite for Two Pianos and the first three Romanian Folk Dances. The latter is allowed on Wikipedia - the first two are not because of copyright uncertainty. All the free music is actually uploaded to [[Wikimedia Commons - see Wikipedia:WikiProject Free music for details about that. Graham87 03:37, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. To clarify, Out of Doors is not free music because it was written after 1923 and is therefore not public domain in the U.S. Freedom in this sense refers to whether you are allowed to distribute the music any way you like, not the price. You can upload samples under fair use though. You might also be interested in WikiProject Contemporary music. Graham87 23:25, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Night music[edit]

That's a fascinating article on Bartók's night music. I was wondering if other composers could be said to have composed night music, too - was it a genre? I'm thinking of Hindemith's In einer Nacht for piano, and maybe I could find a few Szymanowski pieces. By the way, all mp3's of audible music are Not Available anymore. Could you find them again? I believe credit for pioneering the genre belongs to Gustave Mahler, a generation ahead of Bartok, who included such music in a number of his symphonies. In fact, Mahler's 7th symphony features, not one, but two movements designated "Nachtmusik"! It would be wonderful to have an article encompassing the genre as a whole.
