Gascony + Viking invasion

Hi ! it seems you added info on viking invasions to Gascony. I checked the etymologies of Hossegor and Bayonne on the relevant wikipedia articles for these cities. List of Testudines families

Thanks for helping out with the article, but I don't like the seperation of the table. It stuffs up their widths at my resolution. The 2nd table is about 4 cm wider than the first table. It is caused by the common names of the families. Podocnemididae has a long common name, and so it takes up as much room as possible. The first table has none with long names, so it doesn't take up the max. amount of room. --liquidGhoul 23:30, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Fleagle Gang Article

Rmhermen:

You asked if I (Marklemagne) had the authority to reproduce the content on the Fleagle Gang which also appears on http://markgribben.com.

I am the author of that piece and the sole operator of markgribben.com, so I believe that I can reproduce it according to the terms I saw on the Wikipedia: Copyrights page. I don't know much about copyright law, so I don't know if I created some kind of problem because of the Creative Commons license on my personal website and the GFDL. As far as I, as the author and grantor of the CC rights, I'm only too happy to allow Wikipedia to do with that article as the community sees fit.

I added the Fleagle Gang article not to drive traffic to my website, but because I stumbled across a user's request for articles on certain criminals and I happened to know a bit about the gang.

I hope this clarifies the situation. If my article remains on the Wikipedia site, should we add something to ensure other users are not vexed by this same question?

Templates:

• Template:Agricultural production box looks alright, and I doubt it can be further streamlined besides removing the extra table line. If it'syour first time dealing with optional parameters, I tip my hat to you. I'd consider making the footer in a smaller font, and maybe parametering it (with the current content as a default) so that people can use other sources.
• Template:City locator is unnecessary: look at Template:Superimpose (documentation on Template talk:Superimpose). If you want, I can speedy your creation.

Help with GJRFMorelligu

Hello, Rmhermen. I am currently having trouble with User:GJRFMorelligu. I have tagged many of his images with {{PUIdisputed}}, and listed the images at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images. Instead of visiting that page to justify his various claims that the images are indeed released under the GFDL, or are in the public domain, or whatever, he is removing the {{PUIdisputed}} tags from the image description pages. I have asked him several times to stop; first at User talk:GJRFMorelligu#Images you have uploaded, then in my edit summaries to restore the tags, then in comments above and below the tags themselves, then at User talk:GJRFMorelligu#DO NOT REMOVE PUIdisputed TAGS, and then in big bilingual comments, but he seems to have ignored me (see, for example, [1]).

A similar thing usually happens when I tag any of his images with {{no source}} or {{no license}}. He always removes these tags. Sometimes he provides useful source information, but often he just changes to a different random copyright tag with no explanation (see, for example, [2]). I have added {{fair use disputed}} tags to some of his images, but these are invariably deleted as well.

I believe that many of the images he has uploaded have very inadequate source information and probably false licensing information. I am coming to you for help because I know that you have dealt with this user before (your name pops up in most of the image histories). Someone else already wrote a stub on the Mheger 4, and since there is some reports that the Misrad might not be a Mheger, I decided to do a seperate article for the type. Chad: towns & cities

Thanks for your interest in these places. I don't think either Aozou or Ade would qualify as a "city". Neither is much more than a dot on the map and, in these thinly populated regions, where most of the population is nomadic (or at least semi-nomadic) the population fluctuates with the seasons, migration patterns and other factors, such as the state of security in the surrounding area. What both have is some sort of water supply, so, in times of crisis, people are likely to congregate there. Getting up-to-date, verifiable, info. on these places isn't easy, though. GJRFMorelligu possibly evading block

Hello again, Rmhermen. I just thought I'd let you know about User:Caracas 2000, who appears to be User:GJRFMorelligu by a different name (probably to evade his 237-day block). Caracas' edits have popped up on some of the images that Morelligu uploaded and that I'm watching; so far I haven't seen anything as bad as Morelligu's blatant copyvios, but Caracas seems to have the same level of English proficiency as Morelligu and a rather poor grasp of the concept of fair use, and there are edits like this that make me think that Caracas is Morelligu reincarnated (notice that Caracas refers to himself as the provider of that image).

I'm posting this here because I'm not sure about the correct procedure for reporting things like this. The relevant talk on Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard has been archived, and I'm not sure I have strong enough evidence to post on Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets. I made the assumption that New Horizons would hold its speed, which is currently 4.956 AU/year relative to the Sun (vs. 3.615 for Voyeger 1), which was probably wrong of me to do. I don't know how much NASA expects NH to slow down or speed up. But the year 2070 came from a simple calculation of the difference between the 2 speeds. Go to an page which uses it and hit edit. Below the edit box will be a list of links to all the templates used. Go to the correct one and edit it. However, I don't see why Navarte should be changed. Elimination of External Links

I noticed that you changed a number of the external links in the article White Mountain art. Although I have a number of images in the article, there were references to other images that I linked to images of these paintings on White Mountain Art & Artists. IMO, thses images greatly help the article, allowing the user to see the paintings I have referred to. Can you explain why you eliminated these exterenal links? Several points: that page is already linked in the external links page; there is no reason to link those pictures we already have images of on Wikipedia; external links do not belong in image captions; excess linkage to singular site gives appearance of link spam. In the section titled Benjamin Champney and the allure of North Conway, I refer to two paintings, neither of which I had space to include in the article. Their titles are Mount Washington from Sunset Hill and Artists sketching the the White Mountains. You removed the links to images of these paintings. I don't consider this link spam; it enhances the user experience to be able to view these paintings. Can you explain why I should not link to images of these paintings? Also, I was already taken to task for the Characteristics of the Artists gallery for having so many images. But, no one could suggest a better presentation. I uploaded the Mount Washington image and created a link to it on Wikipedia. The second image mentioned may be a good addition to the article as it fits well with the first artist colony statement. You left me a note on commons about this. The pale green area is Nagorno-Karabakh, a self-proclaimed but de facto independent republic within Azerbaijan. I figured the most neutral situation was to include it but color it differently. So the rayons that are part of N-K are dark green. I made these maps before I got the bright idea to actually explain my maps in the image file, rather than letting the article define them, so I'll eventually get back to that and explain that.

Even more complex is Image:Azerbaijan-Kalbajar.png, where the rayon is only halfway in N-K. --Golbez 10:05, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Licensing

You added a license statement to the Champney image that is too broad. Champney died in 1907, so, technically, he has not been dead for 100 years. Unfortunately, this is true for other images, such as those of Thomas Hill paintings, since he died in 1908. How should this be handled and/or corrected? Found it. That tag was originally written as life-plus-70 but later one country in the world, Mexico, was found which uses life-plus-100 (since 2003). I found an alternate tag: Template:PD-art-life-70. Rmhermen 13:42, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Sources for removing unsupported claims

I find idea of taking time and providing sources information to back up removing rumors or someones original researches totally insane. I believe the guy who introduce information into article should be the one who have to back his edit. And I would bet most will agree with me. So please stop vandalizing wiki. You reverted my edits (including some which were not in any way contentious). What process, exactly, leads you to do that? There is no wikipedia requirement that I discuss edits before I do them, and I do not believe that my edits can be construed as vandalism in any way.

I didn't agree with you removing the Henry Ford passage from the Detroit article. While you are correct it is not in the city (by about 3 miles), I feel that it is worth mentioning in the article. I think that there are other things that are not in the city that could be removed first, i.e. the Somerset Collection and Great Lakes crossing mall passages. RefDeskQuestions

We don't get that many questions in Mathematics and Language, which is why they haven't been split. We do get a huge number of questions in Science and Miscellaneous, and to a certain degree Humanities, which is why we have thought to split those. I guess it depends on how smoothly you can browse and reload the Science desk with your computer; it's a pain on mine, and my computer isn't even that shabby. I wish to know why Authors of these Wikipedia Encyclopedia entries don't sign their signatures on them, such as for example, the entry "X-ray"? It's very difficult for someone like me who's pressed for time to have to spend my time searching for these Authors when instead I should be spending my time posing questions to these Authors; aren't most of these Authors experts or auhtorities themselves on these encyclopedia entries? How much control do you, as a Wiki-Administrator, actually have over these Author signatures?

Now then, in what little time I have left, for my question (I wish I were a speed typist); Can you please pass this on to the Author of "X-ray" Encyclopedia entry?; I'm searching for an inexpensive portable X-ray device for personal medical use; or would it be more cost effective for me to build my own X-ray device from scratch, or from a mail-order-kit, both of which I could include radiation protection features in their design? If I had my own personal x-ray device, then I could save myself the travel time and waiting time for a physician's appointment. I widh to operate my personal medical X-ray device to take images, myself, of the physical conditon of my own internal anatomy - I'm age 45 (specifically my bones, vertabrae, ligaments, cartilage, and spinal discs.).

Signing articles is against our policies. Many people contribute to each and every article. These authors can be found by pressing the history tab. Many of these will be experts in grammar, not x-rays. However, I can tell you that you that airport x-ray machines are not medical x-ray machines and even if you had the skill to construct an appropriate one, you would still need the skills to correctly take the image and to correctly interpret the image. This is normally the work of three different kinds of trained specialists. X-ray machines may need to be licensed and you may need to be licensed to operate it. Yep, take a look at today's featured article, Slate industry in Wales; The same code exists in it's references section. It's pretty common among the featured articles as we can't use the col-start, col-break and col-end on the collected references. Technically, it's code from CSS3. I noticed your article survey on your userpage and thought it might be interesting to repeat the experiment. My 250-article sample is obviously tiny, but what's overrepresented and what's underrepresented is not terribly surprising. We do seem to have made some progress on the history articles compared to your original data, but apparently 14% of all knowledge is about TV, movies, bands, and games. Ah well. As evidenced by my comment on Talk:V-2 rocket, I have read the lead, hence there was no reason to repeat your advice. I am asking for date, and it turns out from sources available for me now (Astronautix, etc.), that neither exact date nor circumstances of 189 km launch are known. Such rocket is reported to may have been launched somewhere in the early 1944, according to few accounts. But once again - nothing is clear. To allow it as it was, we would have to assume that the uploader, who only contributed for one week in August 2006, was not only an official of the Maryborough Swim Club with authority to dispose of its copyrights but also the photographer of an image taken in 1956. Redirect

I really don't want to be rude but I really don't agree about the changes you did to some of my articles. Just to put an example: why redirecting Pomacochas lagoon to the article Plain of Bagua?? Even though the lagoon is part of the plain of bagua, both are not the same place. If I broke it before, or I created a new article on that, it's because I do believe there is more information to put in them. When I put the lagoon as part of the Plain of Bagua article, I just put a brief summary of it, and I'm sure, anyone can improve (at least any Peruvian) it by adding some more relevant information on it in a deeper way. I really hope you understand my point, and if I'm wrong please let me know before reverting any of my articles because my students and I are working really hard on them. Edits to Kansas articles

I see you reverted several changes to various Kansas-related articles by a certain anon, something that I was tempted to do, but I only did a few relating to my particular subject area. I previously had to undo a bit of a mess at Oregon Trail created by that user. Anyway, I'm curious if there is anything that can be done about these bizarre (at best) edits, since they are not quite vandalism? I have a feeling this is going to be a continuing problem. Size of wels catfish

I´ve seen you have written that wels catfish grow to 4m and in the Volga and Danubia, but I can confirm you that this are all big fish stories without any prooves, although it can be read in several book(and you can also read many other false dates, for example that great white sharks reach a size of 12m...). I have taken really much research in the last years about the maximum size of wels catfish and other large fish, many comparisons and calculations with known record specimens and known growth rates. The result was that it is nearly impossible for a wels catfish to grow to a size of 4m, and there are in fact really no prooves that such big specimens ever existed. Timeline of first orbital launches by nationality is an expansion of Satellite#Launch capable countries. I change the former so it agreed with the latter. Your changes mean the two pages now directly contradict with each other. Please fix one or the other. (NB I didn't add Australia to the former, only fixed the year.) I also disagree with your assertion that it used "donated U.S. Redstone rocket and infrastructure, not their own technology." The satellite was Australian, and the launch infrastructure was Australian. The Redstone was a US design, but it was a leftover from project SPARTA, a joint US/UK/Australian research project. Can I also point you to this web page: http://www.astronautix.com/lvs/sparta.htm which clearly lists the launcher of being of the Redstone type, but the country being Australia. From what I can gather I think that there is a consensus on the available materials that Australia was indeed the fourth country to launch a satellite, and Satellite agrees with me. No this is not an expansion of a section in Satellite - it is a featured list with clear inclusion criteria which Australia fails. Australia did not "sen[d] objects into orbit using their own launch systems" - they used American rockets and the Woomera facility was constructed by the Australians - with the British and had been used for years by the Americans to launch Redstones before they left and gave the last outdated rocket to the Australians. "U.S. Department of Defense donated the modified Redstone vehicle and the services of the TRW vehicle preparation team, while the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) supplied global tracking and data acquisition services. Facilities of the Joint Australia/United Kingdom Weapon Testing Project supported the launch activities."[4] There is certainly no consensus that Australia was the fourth country to develop native launch capabilities. No, it's because I know you're not talking about mitochondrial DNA, but that that fact is omitted, and because the article is about mitochondrial DNA, that I know the article is contradictory and incorrect. If it's an article about mitochondrial DNA, and all of a sudden you start talking about nuclear DNA, you must explicitly state this. Same with botany articles, which switch among the various genomes all of the time in phylogenetic systematics. Many articles are solely about chloroplast DNA. When the author switches to discussing the nuclear DNA, no matter how obvious it is, the author explicitly announces this change. This is pretty basic, it's courteous to the audience, and it makes certain their is no uncertainty. It's not just with DNA, when talking about one thing, then moving onto another in the text, an editor alerts the reader somehow, doesn't just expect him to say, okay, well all talk about DNA is about mitochondrial so far, but an unannounced switch to nuclear genome has just occured. You readded comments from two sources claiming that the elections were unfair. Given that I would count radio free europe as a anti-communist propaganda organisation and a relic from the cold war I think it is not a good source - at all. I have a similar feeling about both. I removed both references previously and left a message on the talk page. I will do so again now.

Personally I think such things belittle both wikipedia and world affairs harking back to the days of The Great Game - surely we've moved past that. It is simply put propaganda.

I do not find inclusion of positive comments to be a balance to the statements - but that would be one solution.

Quoting two organisations who are uniformly negative about any country not closely allied to the UK/USA is not the way to go for neutrality.

I misspoke on the "growing season". However, for the starch component of corn, the "grainfilling period" is about 51 days. For the cellulose component (totally dried stalk and leaves) -- Over the long growing season you mention, the cellulose production varies from near zero to some peak and then declines. I have no references on the details of cellulose production by corn over the "growing season", do you ? Your typo - Photovoltaic devices convert from 5% to 30% (0.05 to 0.30) of the incident energy, not "0.07%". Of course, from this must be subtracted the "area overhead" of the physical facilities, just as one must for agricultural crops. Photovoltaics (PVs), too, suffer a bit from the effects of a sort of "growing season", related to the effects of ambient and device temperatures, but conversion is only somewhat degraded and never ends or even comes close to ending over the year. Cost has not been discussed for either corn or PVs-- but corn production efficiency has pretty much topped out, where there is still enormous room for improvement in photovoltaics. Thus raising corn can be viewed as an unnecessary, unproductive and costly step for converting the energy of sunfall to a more convenient form of energy. Agricultural operations are for growing food, soon not all of that or even fiber and certainly not fuel. World Heritage template

Hi! I created a template for World Heritage Sites: {{Infobox World Heritage Site}}. Since many of the protected areas are also recognized as World Heritage Sites, I thought that it will be appropriate to forward this template here, and hopefully, for the community to help improve the template. Someone mentioned that the footnotes are unclear (i.e. why the need to emphasize "official" there). It's because the official name (or the name as inscribed on the List) is different from what we usually know. And the Region also has footnote to tackle specifically the classification of those regions which may fall ambiguously between two continents (e.g. those in Russia, Turkey, Cyprus, etc.). In addition, I think that the info provided in the template is much like a jargon for most readers since it box is more of use for internal references in the World Heritage program. I hope that the community will help improve the template and make it more relevant to the readers of wikipedia in general. Thanks. Joey80 13:51, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Corn

Hi Rmhermen. I noticed that recently, the corn page was eliminated and turned into a redirect for maize. Given that there seemed to be an extremely large amount of dicussion (discussion that resulted in non-consensus) for such an action on the maize talk page, and that all corn is not maize, was this a correct thing to do? Capital punishment reference tags

The problem was that there were extra /s placed at the end of the initial naming of the references meaning that the actual reference text was ignored. I fixed it for 11 and 13, but 12 doesn't actually have any reference text to display. It probably was at some point and was later deleted. Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani

Back in 2004[6] you added a few sentences to Ghailani's bio, including the following: "At some time in Pakistan or Afghanistan, he married an Uzbek and had children. Many Uzbek separatists moved into Pakistan and the woman is thought to be from that group." But - Uzbekistan has been independent since 1991, so who are these Uzbek "separatists"? I think you must have meant Islamists, terrorists, extremists (I think that is what they are called in Uzbekistan itself), or some other word - but rather than guess and modify, I thought I would first bring it to your attention. Separatists could still be correct if they are trying to break off a section of that country as in Chechnya. I don't know and couldn't find the original source for all the stories on his capture. I changed it to Islamists. Rmhermen 13:32, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Pravda[7] does refer to "Uzbek separatists" (and "Uzbek fundamentalists") in an article from just before 9/11, but I think it must be an idiomatic error. If anything, they are "unionists" since they wanted an Islamic Turkestan of which Uzbekistan would just be one part. Mporter 02:20, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
