Ben Breedlove's Deletion Discussion

I do appreciate the information you put forth to try and help someone navigate. I'm sorry that my emotions got the best of me in trying to keep this page...though of course I still strongly believe the page has its place here.Petersontinam (talk) 15:09, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
  • No problem. Although I try and avoid British humour when I write stuff on here, it leaks through occasionally. What I certainly don't like is a newcomer abandoning Wikipedia due to being whacked round the face multiple times by regulars, even if those doing the whacking have sound arguments. --Ritchie333 (talk) 15:15, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
Believe it or not, my whole family is plagued with dry humor...you'd think I would easily recognize that..sorry.Petersontinam (talk) 08:56, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
  • Well hopefully this AfD will be gone soon and we can all get on with something else. Anyway, FWIW I think your arguments are getting stronger with better understanding of WP policies, which is good. --Ritchie333 (talk) 12:17, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm sincerely trying.Petersontinam (talk) 16:53, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
Ritchie, I think I just accidentally changed the shape of your paragraph when I inserted my comment. I may have had a symbol in the wrong place. Is this something I should go back and edit on the discussion page, or leave alone? I'm sorry.Petersontinam (talk) 18:03, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
  • I think your edit went a bit wonky somewhere, so I've reformatted so everything looks okay. Some indenting and bullet points maybe aren't perfect, but I'm not bothered about those. Wouldn't worry about doing anything else --Ritchie333 (talk) 18:06, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. I promise to be more careful. I think that I may not be using symbols correctly and had better get that figured out. Also, on a this laptop sometimes when my palm touches the pad, things get really screwed up.Petersontinam (talk) 18:20, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

VdGG citation

Hi Ritchie333! In Van der Graaf Generator you added a citation for the remark that although Hammill is the primary songwriter for both PH and VdGG songs, Hammill's songs get arranged by Hammill and VdGG songs get arranged by the band. Thanks for looking into it. Any cn changed into a citation is a good thing, I feel. But I can't find anything about arrangements in the article you quote. Can you let me know where in the article you read that? Thanks in advance. Mark in wiki (talk) 14:29, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

  • Hi. The specific part I looked at is : "But it is (sic) ... collectively Hamill (sic) with backing musicians, expressing his personal vision, or a joint persona?" - "Absolutely, it's a collective, despite the fact I write most of the songs and all of the words. VDGG is a band, a real band". Because Hammill explicitly dismisses suggestions made by the interviewer that the band are merely his backing musicians, this implies they must have all arranged their individual parts. Would this explicit quote sit better as a citation? --Ritchie333 (talk) 14:38, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. Now I see where you found it. Maybe it would be worthwhile to add the quote to the link in the ref...? To be honest, I'm not sure how such a thing is usually done in Wikipedia. Anyway, thanks for the clarification. Mark in wiki (talk) 14:58, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Please see my sandbox

Ritchie, I have tried to add an edit to Ben Breedlove's article. I have failed miserably with reference links, and also I think my quote is too long for the HEARTs Act. I read that a long quote is like cutting and pasting. Please, if you have any advice or help. thank youPetersontinam (talk) 20:12, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

  • Right, so are you looking to add another reference to the main article? I would basically put at the point you want the reference to go
    <ref>{{cite web|url=http://what.ev.er|title=My reliable source|publisher=Who made this|date=05 January 2012}}</ref>
. I wouldn't cut and paste the reference text itself, because it's not backed up with anything - you need the original link to the press release.
Alternatively, you could ask someone on the article's talk page to put in what you actually want. --Ritchie333 (talk) 21:09, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
  • I think I may have to back up a bit- My understanding is so poor right now, I'm not even sure if there should be a reference of the news source as well as an http link to the news source...or not the link at all and just the reference within the list of references with the reference link. I can't even explain what I am trying to say! I have tried to use various help info, but to my brain it is getting more confusing. I never knew I was this obtuse. Maybe it is best to put a link of my sandbox on the talk page and beg for help. That sure feels like I'm asking someone else to do it for me, but I don't want to screw up. Can I say right now, I give you all massive amounts of respect for knowing what you are doing?!Petersontinam (talk) 21:24, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
  • Your http link to the news source is the reference. Have a look at WP:Tutorial/Citing_sources, where there's a tutorial and sandbox that you can play with changes. In regard your last comment, I'll tell you the story of a 70+ retired AA patrolman who claimed he was never going to be good at computers, to which I replied that I was never going to be good at patching up a radiator leak in the dark 100 miles from home! --Ritchie333 (talk) 21:32, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm going to have to work on it later and pray there is still an article to try and add to. I have to get the laptop to my boyfriend and I have RA, so the desktop is very painful. Not to be corny, but I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate your patience and your help. I imagine you have a hundred things you are doing all at once and it can't be fun to stop and answer frantic, dumb questions. I promise to study and play in the sandbox. I feel like a jerk for misunderstanding you on the discussion page...you really are a stand-up person.Petersontinam (talk) 22:40, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
If I get a polite and well formed question, I'll make a point of answering it. Particularly if it's from someone who's not male and 25 and can offer a fresh perspective on stuff. --Ritchie333 (talk) 00:11, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
I saw that...what is that all about? To me it seems pretty diverse here.Petersontinam (talk) 01:18, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
  • Please, one last question/comment and I swear I will look into getting adopted. I am afraid to add the edit to the article. I fear that a mistake by me could harm its chances of being kept. And there are a hundred ways to make a mistake when it is your first time. Is there someone very neutral (and also patient) who would look at it? Thank youPetersontinam (talk) 18:53, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
  • I wouldn't worry about adding anything else to the article for now. Wait and see what the consensus is for the AfD. I can't really justify adding stuff on behalf of other users just because they want me to, I'm afraid. --Ritchie333 (talk) 19:01, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
  • Understand. I went to the (hopefully) approriate place to ask questions. As far as the consensus..I think it is 7 days now. Do you know when the discussion page closes and how long, in general, it takes for a decision to be made? Thank youPetersontinam (talk) 19:31, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

Azzam Pasha quote AfD

I have suggested on the AfD regarding the Azzam Pasha quote that the article be merged with Azzam Pasha and have already moved most of the material to that article. Please note your opinion on a suggested merge at the AfD.--The Devil's Advocate (talk) 16:42, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation style

Hi there,

Thanks for adding the disambiguation line back to Something Anything. I put one in earlier, but some careless editor had removed it (I assume accidentally!)

If you're wondering why I unlinked most of the links from your line, (except the one to the Something/Anything? article itself), it's because disambiguation pages and lines follow a different set of rules to standard Wikipedia articles. Normally there should only be one blue link per line (i.e. the most likely article that the person would be looking for); the standard Wikipedia MOSDAB article is probably better at explaining this than me. :-)

All the best, Ubcule (talk) 20:47, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
