Why did you request red on white? There are 60 such maps (User:renata3/gallery) and the rest of them are green on green (because it's sort of theme color for Lithuanian subdivisions). Renata3 17:36, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, green on green is hard to see, and I imagine the difference can be impossible for some people to make out. Of course, I think all the maps should be changed, not just one. Also, they should all be SVG now, and they should be put at the Wikimedia Commons instead of here. dbenbenn | talk 23:28, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You wanna change them? :) 'cause for me they are fine as they are. And they are on commons - first they were here, and then uploaded to commons (my mistake, I admit). Renata3 01:43, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No, sorry, too much work for me. Feel free to revert the one that got changed to red and white. (Though perhaps User:Mysid would be willing to change the colors on all of them?) By the way, is it okay with you if I delete the local versions, so the Commons versions will show? dbenbenn | talk 02:03, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Juan Moreira[edit]

Yes, I'm thinking of cleaning up that article and another one I've written. I will do it later, since I'm out of time these days. That article was based on a Spanish printed source and it contained several informal and gaucho slangs so it was very very difficult to translate and get the information organized. Templates and Categories[edit]

Regarding your question on WP:CFD...I'm not an expert but I believe you need to do an edit of some kind to the pages that have the template on them in order to get the category to update. This can be a null edit (i.e. adding an extra space, etc.). Christopher Parham (talk) 06:32, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What will kill Wikipedia[edit]

I agree entirely on what you are saying. The vandals always make big edits people know not to trust and are reverted quickly. Accuracy is no problem in long, looked-at articles (stubs are a different matter). But server size and lack of volunteers is a major threat. Unfortunatly life indeed does love irony; and there's only so much server room. Which means I can't say with any certainty that your prediction is wrong (I hope it is). But...it's going to take a long time before we get to that point, and everyone is happy to help and prevent this. Right? Right? HereToHelp 01:41, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I guess I could split the Community portal up, but I think we should give people time to eliminate all possible opposition before doing something and come up with names for the two new portals. I like Help portal, but To-do portal? Maybe Open tasks portal, or something someone else might suugest. Give it time, I think it will come out well. As for What will kill Wikipedia, just hope we're wrong. I'm going to copy this over to your userpage so you see it. (you'd think we'd figure out how to have it all in one place, you know? Until then see both of our talk pages.) Regards, HereToHelp 18:47, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

List of national coats of arms[edit]

Best to break them out into a seperate list like List of non-sovereign nation flags. Certainly basing the main list on List of Soverign states does make life much easier from the POV side of things. You might like to add a comment to Talk:List of sovereign states (where I have mentioned you name) because if a line was added to that, then a link to "flags of" and "coat of arms of" might be the solution for both. Expellees[edit]

Sure Renata, I'll try to dig and come up with something. It's just something I knew all my life. The expellees were settled in the southern parts of former East Prussia. In fact, half of the population of the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodship is descended from the expellees from Lithuania. My dentist's family was settled in Lidzbark Warmiński for example. Who told you it's not true? Space Cadet 00:28, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about "Reniu", but it just wrote itself. In Polish it means "dear Renata", that's it. I will temporarily delete the statement in question and find something to your satisfaction. Space Cadet 12:55, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ukraine is a different story to me, because my own huge familiy was expelled from Lwów. I need to ask you something: Are you also questioning the expulsions of Germans from the "Recovered Territories" or just the expulsions of Poles from the former Eastern Poland. My RfA[edit]

Thank you so much for nominating me for adminship, I wasn't really expecting it quite so soon. I am quite speechless!, although I still managed to blab on when answering the candidate questions on my RfA. I have added it to the main list as you requested. Please see Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Wackymacs. I have accepted the RfA and answered the questions. Heck...I'm even blabbing now *tapes my mouth shut* Many thanks again! — Wackymacs 19:29, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • It is hard for you to say I should keep cool when someone was rude to me behind my back, and lots of people are voting unfairly on the basis of edit summaries and one wrongly tagged image. I am obviously not going to get the administrator tools because of a few idiots arguing over edit summaries and other silly reasons. How do I withdraw the RfA? — Wackymacs 06:59, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Some strange festival[edit]

Unfortunately, I can't answer with any "correct" answer, as I haven't specifically studied ancient Latvian traditions and festivals. However, my common sense tells me this was probably meant to be Katrīnas diena ('the day of Katrina', which nevertheless ocurs in November 25, not November 5), but I have never ever heard of any festivals associated with this date.

As far as I know, most of the articles in English Wikipedia that are about the mythology of ancient Latvia are from some strange source and need to be reviewed. --Jūzeris | Talk 21:54, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. Unfortunately, I had to temp block the user who was trying to make WP an umlaut-free zone! I think that I have reverted all of the removals. If it comes up again, let me know. Regards, --Fire Star 16:28, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

For determining sockpuppetry, you have to be a bit of a detective. You have to look at the timestamps of the edits, the area of the edits and the nature of the edits. Over time, patterns start to show themselves. For instance, Diacrit never discussed his edits at all. Does the new guy edit this way? Even so, it is an inexact science. Until it is clear, the best way to act in good faith is to treat the suspected sockpuppet as a different user. If the user vandalises, he gets warned 1, 2 or 3 times (depending on the nature of the vandalism) and gets blocked in turn if they continue. If a new one pops up immediately after that doing the same things, then the indefblockeduser and sockpuppet templates come into play. If the puppets (or their bots) are attacking just one page, or a small suite of pages over and over sometimes temp protecting the page(s) is a time saving option. Cheers, --Fire Star 16:44, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Most of them have only 1 edit. And list is growing every second! just look at new user log. Renata3 22:41, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use for coa[edit]

You wrote (on my talk page): Thanks for your answer fair use for coa, but I am bringing this here. Hope you don't mind. I have uploaded all the coa's in List of cities in Lithuania and some more. But what I should do now? Redraw them? Most of them are from geraldika.ru, ngw.nl, litva.lt, or crwflags.com. Very few are from gov sites.

Note: I have no idea what is fair use (even though I have read the wiki article about it) and I hate law. So if you could just tell me what to do... :) Also my graphic abilities on scale from 0 to 10 are about 1. So redrawing them is not really an option for me. Renata3 20:28, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a simple answer. You could ask for someone qualified to redraw them; or you could post this to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Fair use and ask for a clearer guideline there; or you could use a template which claims fair use and try to proved a proper rationale; or you could not have images of the coats of arms.
Fair use is a tricky but important legal doctrine in US copyright law. It says that when you use a limited amout of an admittedly copyrighted work for a proper purpose, in a way that doesn't hurt the copyright owner too much, you are acting leagally. Ther is no automatic formula for what is and what sin't fair use. The only way you know for sure that soemthing is fair use is if soemone sues you for copyright infringmenbt, you defend on the grounds of fair use, adn the court rules in your favor. it is very much a case by case question, and depends hevily on the facts of the particular case. You can be almost sure if soemone esle has used a simialr copyrighted work in much the same way, and has won in court. If there has been no court case very similer to yours, then you have to tro ro reason from less similar cases, adn guess what the court would do if you were sued. Fair use is a defense, which means it is only raised by someone who has been sued for copyright infringment. The classic form of fair use is a book reviewer who quotes passages from the book under reveiw to analyze them, or the teacher who makes copies of a passage for his class, to serve as the basis for a lesson or discussion. Note that in both cases the person using the copyrighted work is analyzing or discussing thst work, not just copying it. Note also that neither uses the whole work, only a small part of it. Note that neither is at all likely to hurt the comercial intersts of the copyright holder -- people will not refrain from buying a book because they can read a reveiw instead. Note also that both uses are of a kind generally considered socially beneficial. These are the kinds of factors considered when determing whether a use of copyrighted materiel is fair use.
Wikipedia tends to be suspicious of fair use, partly because it is often claimed by people who realy mean "I don't have any right to use this, but i want to and don't think it does any harm". Also, sicne part of what makes soemthign fair use is whether it is being used in a commercial setting, contet that is acceptable fair use for wikipedia itself might not be for comercial mirrors and re-users of wikipedia content. Also fair use is specific to US copyright law, and similar concepts in the laws of other countries where they exist, are much more restrictive. Because of all of this, our fair use policies are rather more restritive than the law probably requires.
I'm sorry not to be more help, this is a tricky and complex subject, and much depends on the exact source of the content being sued, who the copyright holder is, and exactly how it is being used. DES (talk) 21:42, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Copied from User Talk:DESiegel: Ok, thanks for such a long answer. But are coa's copyrighted? I mean, some family coa might be, but governmental? If I would redraw them, how somebody would say that I did not just copy paste it from somewhere, because they all are the same. There is one original, confirmed by a decrete by the president and then it is reproduced by others. How do I reproduce reproduction so it could be released to public domain?
I just read a copyright law by the Lithuanian government. Now it reads (official translation):
Article 5. Works not Attributed to the Subject Matter of Copyright
1. Copyright shall not apply to:
3) official state symbols and insignia (flags, coat-of-arms, anthems, banknote designs, and other state symbols and insignia);
Now the question is: are city, municipality and county coa's official state symbols?
Ah, I loved that template... Such a no-brainer... And I hate law. :) Renata3 03:28, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well in traditional heraldry, the only official think is the balzon, the written description, and different heraldic artists can do different versions of the CoA which all match the blazon, but are not identical in artistic detail, and which would be subject to copyright by the artist or the artist's employer. In more modern use, particuarlly by a goverment or institution, the actual visual form would be official, and all correct versions would be direct copies. In the latter case there is less of a copyright issue, IMO.
I think CoA's probably are "State symbols" under the above law, but not every country has that law -- some claim copyright in state symbols, I think. I think the above law would be reason enouigh to create {{tl:LithuanianStateSymbol}} which would declare that anything taggeds with it was a Lithuanian state symbol, and exempt from copyright under that law. if you send me the details on the source of the law (so that I can cite it proerply -- I mean it's official titel or number or whatever, and where you got the official translation) I will create that template, and that will solve the probelm for Lithuanian governmental CoAs. No, of course I don't take it too much to my heart, though I do take it personally (as people are judging who I am, which is a pretty personal thing). As to my alleged or real bias I would be really glad if you provided me with some diffs and links. Perhaps not now, perhaps after this whole RfA ends, but it would really be helpful. So far many people accused me of bias or pushing some irrational POV, though seldom was I able to speak of some specific issues. Anyway, take care and say hello to Deir once you meet him. In a way I miss him as we still have lots of open issues and there are not enough Lithuanian speakers to help us with the sources... Halibutt 03:08, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No need to be sorry about the spelling, it's 5AM here and I've been at work for some 24 hours now. A new day is starting and it will not end any time soon...
A to your comments - I must say that I'm quite puzzled as I remember the whole thing differently. I listened to all proposals and decided to stay with mine. At the same time I also work on finding some better solution (together with Piotrus, Irpen and many other guys) to suit all and fit in all articles on cities, be them in Poland, Ukraine or Rwanda. Anyway, it's kind of sad when people remember you as the person to refuse to accept some crazed users trying to pretend that the city in question was Lithuanian since times immemorial and not as the guy who wrote most of the article on Vilnius, or whatever you want to call that city. So, basically, people critisize me for defending my point of view at the talk pages, sometimes completely forgetting that the article pages are in most cases unaffected by the content disputes... Anyway, have a good day/night. Halibutt 04:00, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder if we can find a single unbiased (100% NPOV) editor at wiki. As users of various nationalites who have cast their support behind him have attested, Halibutt is always willing to discuss and reach a consensus. Lithuanian Copyright symbols[edit]

I noticed your post regarding Lithuanian law and copyright. This is probably farfetched but I was wondering if Latvia passed similar laws. See, I am trying to upload the flag of Courland,http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/lv-cour.html, but it appears that copyright would prohibit it unless a special case would apply. The flag is sourced from a 1936 book, and is of a former nation. So I don't know if it would qualify even with the law, or if it would qualify because it is no longer a nation. Sorry, this post was a bit of a ramble. Have a good day! Falphin 03:54, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to inform you that there is an ongoing discussion at article Territorial claims of the Baltic States (formerly was known as "Lost territories of the Baltic States", but was recently renamed; some users seems to disagree with that renaming). Recent edits as well were accused of POV, and, in fact, article was disputed for a long time already. There are currently no Lithuanian contributors to that article, therefore your opinion is much needed. It would be nice if you would add that article to your watchlist and continue helping to improve it until a decition will be reached about its future (there is currently a poll about it in the article's talk page). I hope together we all will be able to make that article neutral. Kaiser 747 10:46, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Picture[edit]

Hi! I'm having trouble uploading my photo. The photo is in public domain. The image first appeared on Government public access t.v. Channel 17 in Burlington, Vermont in 2004. It was re-aired on C-Span as public domain. http://crisericson.com and http://chrisericson.com Every time I try to upload it I recieve a message that says: "." is not a recommended image file format. Have any ideas? [email protected]

Would you take a look at talk:Partitions of Poland. We are discussing a possible change of the name of the article there and I believe that a Lithuanian perspective view would be helpful. --Lysy (talk) 10:21, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Subdivisions[edit]

Hi, Renata! I can tell you for sure that I do have that information. Problem is, it's very scattered and unorganized (which is, along with the lack of time, is the reason why I stopped working on the project for a while). The other thing is that most of it is in Russian. If you have no problem with Russian (which is probably not the case, because it's not in your Babel box), I'll be more than glad to ship you everything I have so far. If Russian is an obstacle, I can translate the bulk of the information so you'll have a good starting point, but that may take a while (and a long while at that). Please let me know what you prefer.

And, hey, great job on Subdivisions of Lithuania! A very interesting and a high-quality article so far.—Ëzhiki (erinaceus amurensis) 02:16, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please check your mailbox—I sent you some materials you might find useful.—Ëzhiki (erinaceus amurensis) 16:02, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Bernardines[edit]

No, they are not exactly the same but the redirect is the best could be done now. You're right that all this is a bit confusing. The orders divided, joined and changed their names throughout history. To make it more complicated, the names and other datails are often different in various countries. Benedictines is one of the names used in Poland (and Lithuania ?) to call one of the Franciscan orders: Friars Minor. I'm not sure if this name is recognized in English, but I've created the redirect in hope to avoid some confusion (but I created more instead ?). --Lysy (talk) 09:01, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You may be right, that this is something different. Probably that's the matter of wrong (and naive) translation. Need to investigate. --Lysy (talk) 13:40, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If you have a minute, maybe you could take a look at and hopefully improve Pažaislis monastery, a small article that I've started recently but do not have enough information to expand. --Lysy (talk) 09:14, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reply re:your Partitions of Poland inquiry[edit]

Crossposted with my user talk page.

Wow, the discussion for some reason reminds me of that at Talk:Oleg of Chernihiv and Talk:Mikhail of Chernihiv. It is a mix of nationalism, Wikipedia policy issues, common English use issues, the terms used by other encyclopedias and literature on the subject. All in all, I believe it boils down to the general naming policy of Wikipedia, except in this case we are not talking of the name of a place, but of how the series of events should be named. I'd recommend to bring this to a higher level by initiating something like Wikipedia:Naming conventions/Geographic names; only, of course, it would be regarding the names of historic events.

I also choose not to participate in the discussion—partially because I am not so sure myself which name is better, partially because I am going to be eaten by both Polish and Lithuanian editors :), and partially because it looks like a time committment I cannot afford at this time. I am sure, though, that you will be able to find other Russian editors who would be delighted to participate.—Ëzhiki (erinaceus amurensis) 16:19, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar[edit]

Thank you for awarding me a barnstar. I, perhaps, do not completely deserve it, both because the project is not finished and because I had too much fun working on it :) I will wear it with pride, though. Thank you!—Ëzhiki (erinaceus amurensis) 16:26, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Polish monarchs[edit]

Hi Renata3, I think the situation with Polish monarchs is different. The naming has been giving historians headaches for a long time. There's no real consensus so we're trying to hash it out on the talk page. As far the the PoP/PoPLC is concerned, I don't believe Google results are the answer to everything. The argument I've been trying to make for not moving the article consists of two parts: 1) that PoP is a valid term 2) that PoP is used *much* more often than any other term. I provide the Google results to prove the second part by illustrating the overwhelming difference in usage. If there difference wasn't so dramatic, I wouldn't be opposed to the move. Appleseed (Talk) 00:48, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry about not being precise with my Google comment. It's my understanding that some folks on WP use Google like it's the be-all and end-all. I was only trying to say that the Google results were only one part of my argument, and the reason I was using them was because they were so dramatic. Appleseed (Talk) 02:21, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding your suggestion to create a disambig page--even before the proposal to move the PoP article, I was going to create "main articles" for each of the partitions with links from PoP. But by turning the PoP article into a disambig page, we would have a disambig where other languages have an actual article. More imporantly, we would still need to come up with titles for the three partitions. I assume you would prefer First Partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth rather than First Partition of Poland. But what about the second and third ones, which occurred after the May 3 Constitution? If you do not want to call it the Second Partition of Poland, would calling it the Second Partition of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth be valid? Appleseed (Talk) 02:35, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Request for English verifying[edit]

Hi. I extensively rewrote the article St. Sebastian (Mantegna). As I'm not so confident about my English, can I ask you to jump there for a minute and correct savagely what you feel bad written? Thanks. Attilios.

My RFA[edit]

Hey Renata3! Thanks for your support on my RfA. The final outcome was an unanimous (45/0/0), so I am now an administrator. If you need help, or have a question, please don't hesitate to let me know! Again, thanks! :D --Eliezer | £€åV€ m€ å m€§§åg€ 03:38, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Note[edit]

Hello. Firstly, thank you for contributing at the article Territorial claims of the Baltic States and its discussion. I would like to notify you that I will leave to Frankfurt soon where I will spend quite much time; thus I won't be on Wikipedia for long. Therefore, I would like to ask you and others to continue to contribute there and watch that a solution would be reached, factually accurate name would be chosen, and the article wouldn't just stay disputed forever as it used to be previously. Check the article from time to time (or, even better, put it on watch list) and if you will see that no one discusses anything anymore nor edits the article for a long time (e.g. a week), try to act by implementing voting decition and such. Good luck! (you shouldn't reply to this by the way as most likely I won't be able to check Wikipedia anytime soon as I will leave quickly). Merry Christmas to you :) .Kaiser 747 09:51, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Paksas, litas ir t. t.[edit]

Sveika. Ačiū už žinutę. Vistiek apie Lietuvą angliškai wikipedi'joje straipsnių yra, ir kai kas yra pasakyta. Tobulinti reikėtų, be abejonės.

Linas Lituanus 16:09, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

ĮDĖJAU LIETUVIŠKAI medžiagos apie litą. Linas Lituanus 16:20, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reply by SCA[edit]

I didn't intend to offend you. This is not an argument to "throw away Lithuania" at all (I'm married to a Lithuanian from Vilnius!), but rather an argument against the more complex title for the partitions on an English-speaking site. All we're talking about is the title. If I were Lithuanian, I might feel sad that few English speakers know anything about my country, but I wouldn't take offense over it. Anyhow, Atleiskite. Sca 18:38, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I know they don't know. And it's ok with me as long as they show at least a tiny bit of interest and willingness to know. But to say "Ah, I don't care; I can't find on the map, I cannot pronounce the name, and thus it does not exist for me" - I take it deep into my heart. And that's exactly what were you saying (in very different words, though). Renata3 18:53, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
No, that's not what I was saying. You misunderstood. Sca 02:38, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

DYK[edit]

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Krzysztof Zygmunt Pac, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Voice samples[edit]

Hi there! Recording voice samples is fairly easy. If you're using Window$ XP, then you don't have to install the microphone, just connect it to the correct port (micro port, not the headphones) and it should work fine. If it still does not work, you might want to check the sound volume settings, at times the micro is muted by default - just uncheck the box then and it should work just fine.

As to the software used, I strongly reccomend Audacity. It's the best program out there, it's free and it's easy to use. As to the tips and tricks - after recording the sample, you might want to separate the stereo onto two channels and save only one of them in mono, it is much lighter and the quality is just fine. Also, try to cut out as much silence as you can, it saves a lot of space. Halibutt 12:48, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's great! I thought I might critisize it, but alas! there's nothing to critisize for me :) As to other tips - apparently your microphone is much better than mine. In most of my voice samples I have to do quite some work to de-noise the background (Audacity is good at it, BTW). Halibutt 12:10, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent contribution(s) to the Wikipedia article Krzysztof Zygmunt Pac are very much appreciated. However, you did not provide references or sources for your information. Keeping Wikipedia accurate and verifiable is very important, and as you might be aware there is currently a drive to improve the quality of Wikipedia by encouraging editors to cite the sources they used when adding content. If sources are left unreferenced, it may count as original research, which is not allowed. Can you provide in the article specific references to any books, articles, websites or other reliable sources that will allow people to verify the content in the article? You can use a citation method listed at How to cite sources. Thanks! mikka (t) 21:15, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Spinmaster plantpot AFD[edit]

Hi, I was reminded by User:Search4Lancer that you recently tried to close the Spinmaster plantpot article. I deeply appreciate your help, but there's some times when an AFD closure is best left to an admin. Wikipedia:Deletion_process#Non-Administrators_closing_discussions is a great place to read about it. I've went ahead and finished it. Good luck on your quest for Adminship. If you have any questions, please ask. --LBMixPro<Speak|on|it!> 09:45, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
