Yes, and there's the issue: Wikipedia is a not-for-profit site that carries no advertising and is supported by charitable donations. Placing a free advertisement with lots of sales language, dozens of links to your website and photos of your products is, in effect, stealing from a charity. It's also something you, as Marketing Manager, should be wary of - the negative publicity if competitors or newspapers discover that you're ripping off a charity in order to boost your Google PageRank. Even if that's not what you intended, it will be spun that way. HI Redvers, Of course, Wikipedia was set up as a non-profit making, information sharing site. Point understood about the sales language, (could you care to clarify exactly where the language became in anyway sales orientated and I’ll try to stick to your guidelines). However I’m sure you will agree that the information on the site has to be correct and giving a non-impartial, balanced view of the subject in hand.

With this in mind we’re looking to clean up the Brill Publisher pages (appertaining to Brill Publishers, and it’s imprints Martinus Nijhoff and Hotei Publishers). And, as they stand now, these pages contain factual errors and misleading information which we wish to rectify and which I’m sure Wikipedia, as a database for impartial and correct information, would be happy to see rectified.

Obviously we don’t want to step on your toes but we do feel that we can work this out together.. A final thing. Hello again, Dagmar. For information on how to go about correcting information that Wikipedia has on your company, you'd be best off carefully reading the business FAQ, which will give you full details of what is and isn't allowed to be added and what changes can be made by which interested parties.

The sales language in the article started at the "history" section. The whole section was doomed the moment it was typed in, as it was not written with encyclopedia readers in mind, it was written to advertise the company. Lines like "Our main customers are academic and research institutions, libraries, and scholars" belong in a brochure, not in an encyclopedia. The language gets worse in the next section: "Martinus Nijhoff is extremely proud of its very special and longstanding relationship..." and "Working together, the Hague Academy and MNP have made this monumental book series.." and "enriched with extra information" are sales terms, not encyclopedia entries. You also managed to include 10 links to your website in the article, including two in the first sentence. That doesn't inspire much confidence that you're here to do anything but advertise for free.

As for the placing of free advertising I mentioned, I'll try to clarify. Wikipedia is the ninth most popular website in the entire world. Obviously, this makes it an attractive target for anyone wishing to advertise - literally millions of people a day go past our pages. Better still, Wikipedia is editable by anybody and any advertising is therefore free and totally under a compant's control! Great! Except not. Advertising on Wikipedia is fraught with trouble. First of all, companies are facing a very large community of editors here who really, really don't like advertising. Attempts to advertise get stamped on - hard. So that's Not Good. Second, Wikipedia is completely open - every edit is logged and those logs are publically available for all time. So a company's name, IP address (if they've edited without logging in) and what they've done here have all been made available to everybody forever. Anybody can see what they've done. My colleague Durova wrote a brilliant article that shows some of the pitfalls of this - mainly politicians caught flattering themselves. But Durova has a point in that article that applies to businesses: because Wikipedia is funded by chartitable donations and because everything is logged, it is very easy for a competitor or a newspaper to discover that someone has edited their own article. With a bit of "spin" on the story and the edits are suddenly "Look! X-Company NV has been caught stealing from a charity!!". Believe me, this has happened!

I hate that to happen to any legitimate company genuinely seeking to help Wikipedia and its readers, just as much as I enjoy it happening to companies that are just stealing my time and money. It really was my intention to use this page solely to inform people of my company - not persee to advertize for it. All that jazz

G'day,

I am trying to document the venues and bands that make up the Sydney Trad Jazz scene but you keep deleting my stuff with little notice and not alot of explanation as to why. I have no commercial relationship with any of these bands, musicians or venues and have done my best to ensure that those musicians I have covered so far are in fact notable as per the guidelines, I have noted the criteria that allows there inclusion on the discussion pages as per the guidelines along with notes pointing out my intention to expand the articles in the near future yet you and other admins just delete them. Where explanation is given no time is given to rectify any problems.

Why is this so? Is there something intrinsically evil about Australia jazz that it should be deleted on sight? Should I just give up and not try to document what I believe to be a culturally significant phenomina?

Welcome to Wikipedia. I'm sorry that you're annoyed by Wikipedia's rules on what we do and we don't allow in our articles. It's nothing personal - it can't be with thousands of articles created by hundreds of editors every day.

The articles you created were deleted by various people for various reasons. Bill Dudley (trumpeter), when you first created it, didn't assert notability for the subject. Wheelchair Epidemic (talk · contribs) nominated it for deletion and I deleted it. You recreated the article but used sales language; Ecoleetage (talk · contribs) nominated it for deletion and NawlinWiki (talk · contribs) deleted it because we don't allow advertising. The New Orleanians had the line You can catch The New Orleanians on stage every Sunday from 5pm to 8pm at the Strawberry Hills Hotel - clear advertising; Wheelchair Epidemic nominated it for deletion, NawlinWiki deleted it.

By this time, editors were spotting a pattern to your edits: low notability subjects being written about with advertising terms in them. So Strawberry Hills Hotel was proposed for deletion by Wheelchair Epidemic, Ecoleetage agreed and NawlinWiki deleted it. David Ridyard didn't assert notability; Rising*From*Ashes (talk · contribs) nominated it for deletion, Wheelchair Epidemic agreed and NawlinWiki deleted it. Adrian Ford didn't assert notability; Stijndon (talk · contribs) nominated it and I deleted it. You recreated it, again without asserting notability, StaticGull (talk · contribs) noted that it read like advertising, Stijndon nominated it again and NawlinWiki deleted it.

Category:Australian Jazz Bands was deleted by NawlinWiki because it wasn't a category - it was a list.

You're welcome to recreate any of these articles, but you need to say clearly and upfront why they are notable enough to be included and provide a reliable, third-party source for any such claim. Thanks it does help somewhat, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain what happen from "AdminSide" although I was in the process of going back to remove the reference to the showtimes (the advertising) and add references to press and radio interviews which as far as I can determine would have satisfied the notability requirement when I found them deleted - having now been though this "ordeal" I think preparing & editing the artcles in entirety offline first instead of building them piecemeal online may have avoided the problem alternatively a little leeway time wise from the admins to allow for corrective action to be taken would have also been helpful and resulted in alot less stress for me (having already had one heart attack in my life I could have done without that extra stress).

Can I respectfully suggest a little more time be allowed for corrective editing to take place before summary deletion - surely 24 hours to fix a problem would not be un reasonable, particulary when a hang on tag has been posted.

Anyway enuf sed, I'll toddle off and prepare some more substantial articles offline and thanks again for taking the time to respond.

Nice theory, but if we allowed 24 hours, that would be 24 hours Wikipedia would be displaying free advertising, libel and nonsense across some 7,000 articles that we would be waiting to delete, every day. And, to be fair, you got several message telling you what was wrong with the articles you created, telling you how to pause the deletion and telling you what you needed to read to learn more about avoiding such pitfalls. You just blanked your talk page and carried on creating and recreating these articles. The problem, I would suggest, is not entirely at Wikipedia's end. ➨ REDVERS in a car - no brakes? Redvers what you say is not entirely true, I read the guidelines, placed hang on tags and ascerted notability on each of the pages and notated the talk pages with my intention to add more detail. I suspect no one bothered to follow the procedure and read those notes prior to redeleting those articles. Having read your comments above regarding posting images to commons I believe you are working with double standards. As best I can make out my only real error was to make mention of the bands playing times and I am not entirely convinced that such information could not be considered relevant to an article about actively working musicians however I was prepared to remove it, only you deleted it before I could. As for my suggestion about allowing 24 hours to rectify problems I can see no problem with also quarantining such material during the "rectification period" so it could only be viewed and edited by the author and admins. I'm totally new at wikipedia. I have been writing a page about a new company that me and some other people are setting up in the US and the Netherlands, called OneCleanWorld. I've posted it twice now but have found out it was taken away because of, I believe, advertising. I would like to know how I could post something about this company without it being advertising. I just want to say what our goals are (partly for-profit/ partly non-for-profit) and what we're about. Could you please let me know what you think is wrong and how I could put something up... I noticed that you warned the above user for his violations of our image use policy. He has, as with all the other disruption warnings on his talk page, ignored them and continued his behavior. I'm thinking that sterner warnings, or even a block, may be in order, as copyvios are, of course, far more serious forms of disruption. I would block myself, but I want to go through and check the images to make certain that they are violations (even though absence of sourcing is bad enough). The next image he uploads without a source, I'm prepared to block indefinitely because he has been warned and has consistently failed to respond to talk page messages. I would leave him a note saying that he would remain blocked until we heard back from him that he understood the problem. It may just be that he is unaware of his talk page. No, that site only does upside-down characters. You can copy-and-paste individual letters from Wikipedia's articles on Unicode symbols (remembering that not everyone can see all of them): Letterlike Symbols, Number Forms, Miscellaneous Symbols (make sure you copy the type in the top right of each box, not the image at the bottom of each box), Latin characters in Unicode and following the links from Unicode symbols. I then restored the page (minus the vandalism) as I had no reason to remove the entire thing permanently - it seems a perfectly normal user page. Right now I can search for the most ridiculous, obscene and completely useless information on Wikipedia, yet you found it necessary to delete an article I created regarding an upcoming album that I happen to have intimate knowledge about (I am co-engineering it, among other things.) I was in the middle of adding more sources (MySpace links, for the most part), if thats what this is about. Aside from Sinister's MySpace and homepage links, there are no other sources I can provide at this time (aside from MySpace links, that I was about to add, for all the contributing artists I listed.)
