Adoption

Hey! There is a user looking for an adopter and when I looked through the Adoption headquarters and saw your name, I think you'd be a good fit for this user. He likes doing maintenance tasks just like you do. His name is User:Cyberpower678. If you look at those pages, particularly the Idlib and Damascus clashes, as well as the 2011-2012 Syrian uprising, you would see a high usage of those 30 sock accounts that were blocked. Sopher99 (talk) 19:52, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Are you sure these edits do not qualify as vandalism? BLPPROD is very specific about the criteria under which it should be removed, and I think it is quite clear that those standards are not being met in the current article? Gaijin42 (talk) 20:29, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

If that type of edit was usually revision deleted, we would have to revdel hundreds of edits daily, because vandals constantly add "penis!", "COCK!", "shithole", "nigger", etc. to articles. RE: category removal on | Shooting_of_Trayvon_Martin

I saw your removal of the category I placed in the article, and I saw your reason as well. I disagree that the category I placed in violates BLP. The shooters own words back up that this was indeed racially motivated. Yes, he hasn't been charged as such, further we have only his word that it was self defense. So, how about this, I won't replace my category, but self defense has to go as well, as we have only his word on it, and in this case, it can't be considered reliable either. Appeal of Speedy Deletion: The Pledge of the Computing Professional

I'm part of the team of founders behind the organization The Pledge of the Computing Professional, whose new page you recently marked for speedy deletion based on criteria A7 (notability). Can we contest this with you? Admittedly, we're a very new organization, but we've been endorsed by two existing notable organizations and have 15 existing chapters. Details on all of the above are on the "Talk" page of the deleted article, as well as our website [1].

Most of us are also fairly inexperienced in the ways of Wikipedia; I'm probably the "most" experienced, but I'm hardly more than a novice myself. We think we objectively qualify for inclusion in Wikipedia. (I didn't see the original article, so I don't know if there were other issues that we didn't address the first time around ...) Hi! First of all (although not a factor in the page's deletion), the page was in the wrong namespace. It had been submitted under the "Wikipedia:" namespace, which is generally reserved for policies, guidelines, and the administration of Wikipedia. This can be easily rectified by submitting articles without a prefix; however, other problems existed.
The reason I deleted the article was that it did not indicate why "The Pledge of the Computing Professional" was important or significant. Rather, the article merely described the organization, its rites of passage, and a bit of its history. If you want the article to be kept on Wikipedia, you will need to provide verifiable, reliable sources to show that the article passes the notability guidelines for organizations.
Lastly, if you would like, I could restore the article to a userspace draft for you to continue working on or email the contents to you since the article contained nothing blatantly inappropriate like copyright violations, libel, or vandalism. Reaper Eternal (talk) 12:24, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Removal of Howie's question

Hi... I'm just a random user of Wikipedia, who rarely makes significant edits (I'm on a library computer). I'm not completely sure if removing Howie's question was the right call. I don't see him or her as a troll, just someone unfamiliar to Wikipedia. Many of the answers pointing them in more helpful directions were perfectly appropriate, IMHO. I'm not convinced it would do any real damage to Wikipedia's reputation. The case you linked to (Billy Ego) involved an editor engaged in highly disruptive behaviour. Curious what your fellow admins (or Wikipedians in general) think. We do often get potentially controversial issues discussed on the Reference Desk, and I think caution is called for in removing genuine (if somewhat inappropriate) questions. 119.225.16.46 (talk) 00:54, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

If there is a policy or guideline which justifies your deletion of the question and responses to it, please cite same on the Ref Desk talk page, rather than just removing the question and some responses to it by respected Wikipedia contributors. Revdel request

Hi Reaper, I'm contacting you not because you were involved with this issue, but because you are listed in CAT:REVDEL. Please take a look at The Barney Bunch. Many of the revisions there would fit under CFRD 2 or 3. I realize that most of the attack content targets fictional characters, but there is plenty of mention of real people, living and deceased. I'm not sure if it would be better/easier to selectively revdel those edits, or to speedy it as an attack page. If you decide to revdel it then could you also fully protect it to prevent this vandalism from appearing again at this title? Request for arbitration assistance

Hi, I just want to ask your help in resolving this issue with another editor on the Mount Pinatubo article. I'm Briarfallen and a regular editor of said article. The problem is on the second sentence of the lead section about the Cabusilan Mountains. One disruptive editor, (User:FromTarlac) keeps changing it to Tri-Cabusilan Mountain Range which is wrong, even though I presented two online references: an online copy of a Geography book and an online topography map of the area from the 1950s by the US Corps of Engineers. I thought he did not check my references. In his defense, he says, "he lives near the mountain and that's how they call the mountain range" and he gave two books as references: one is a book and not verifiable online, but the other "Fire and Mud" is also a book but has an online version from the USGS website. It is also one of the External links of the Mount Pinatubo article. I checked the website but 'Cabusilan Mountains' was not mentioned. In the Philippines, misinformation is a problem so together with my references, I presented him with the link for WP:Verifiability, not truth and WP:Verifiability. On his last edit on March 19th, he again changed it to Tri-Cabusilan but the worse part is that he removed my reference link to the topographic map!!! What kind of editor would do that? Well, the main problem I can see is that neither of you has yet engaged in discussion on the talk page. Try discussing with the other editor, and perhaps reminding him that the burden of proof is not on you to find the sources that disprove you; rather, he needs to find them. Decic equation

Hi Reaper, sorry I've had to revert your last edit to Decic equation, but the paper I added as further reading is not a source for any part of the article. I came across the article when checking the contributions of a new editor. It was unsourced and a messy half-copy of Septic equation, so I did my best to clean it up. I couldn't quickly find anything to source it to (although it's clear to a mathematician how it should be). I did however find a paper that proposes a possible method of solution, so I added it as further reading for others to make use of.

I'm grateful for your attempt to clean up the article, but there's no point in pretending that it has any sources at present. It's possibly a candidate for deletion, as there are potentially an infinite number of polynomial equations of increasing degree and we need to stop somewhere. Article Feedback Tool updates

Hey all. My regular(ish) update on what's been happening with the new Article Feedback Tool.

Hand-coding

As previously mentioned, we're doing a big round of hand-coding to finalise testing :). I've been completedly bowled over by the response: we have 20 editors participating, some old and some new, which is a new record for this activity. Many thanks to everyone who has volunteered so far!

Coding should actively start on Saturday, when I'll be distributing individualised usernames and passwords to everyone. If you haven't spoken to me but would be interested in participating, either drop me a note on my talkpage or email okeyes@wikimedia.org. If you have spoken to me, I'm very sorry for the delay :(. There were some toolserver database issues beyond our control (which I think the Signpost discussed) that messed with the tool.

New designs and office hours

Our awesome designers have been making some new logos for the feedback page :) Check out the oversighter view and the monitor view to get complete coverage; all opinions, comments and suggestions are welcome on the talkpage :).

We've also been working on the Abuse Filter plugin for the tool; this will basically be the same as the existing system, only applied to comments. Because of that, we're obviously going to need slightly different filters, because different things will need to be blocked :). We're holding a special office hours session tomorrow at 22:00 UTC to discuss it. If you're a regex nut, existing abuse filter writer, or simply interested in the feedback tool and have suggestions, please do come along :).

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. You dealt with a sock a few months ago at Bikini Beach. The same sock seems to be back (Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/John Daker). That username block

Was there something I was missing that I should know in the future? It's not every day I make a username hard block only to have the block made even harder. Ks0stm (T•C•G•E) 17:15, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Actually, I had initially thought it was yet another sockpuppet of the serial harasser who makes usernames attacking User:B.wilson. I had seen it on the user creation log and then immediately blocked it without talkpage or email access, then found out it was actually just a random attack account. Speedy deletion template filter

Does the filter that catches removed speedy deletion templates cover:

  • placing the tag in <!--invisible comments-->
  • changing the template to {{db-u1}} or {{db-g7}} and then removing that template
  • inserting random characters between the braces (something like {-{db-g13}-})
  • removing braces ({db-g13} or {{db-g13} rather than {{db-g13}})
  • wrapping the tag in any tag that does not properly display templates (such as <source> or <nowiki> or <pre>)

Filemover decline

I don't know either. For some reason, the upload log was showing the several deleted images you uploaded in December 2011 as your last uploads, so I declined your request. Now, however, the log seems to be working properly, showing that you have uploaded a great many images since then, so your request is now  Done. I've never seen that bug before.... Ooh, that would be wonderful! There is one filter in particular that we could use your help on: "247- Adding emails in articles". We recommend 'auto-flagging' posts that contain email addresses, to help oversighters comply with laws that require deletion of posts that include private email addresses (as described in the feedback guidelines). Well, I had the rollback usergroup for about nine months prior to becoming an admin, and I used it extensively to revert vandalism to various articles. I also commonly used antivandalism scripts and programs that depended on having rollback, such as igloo and huggle. After several months, I became an edit filter manager to help prevent gross abuse of Wikipedia and its editors by several banned trolls. After several more months, HJ Mitchell nominated me to be an administrator, which passed unopposed, as can be seen here. Reaper Eternal (talk) 12:58, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

No. The bureaucrats have made it pretty clear that they want only bureaucrats to force-close RFAs. (Regular editors can still "close" an RFA after the candidate has withdrawn and when he does not know how to stop it.) I probably pushed the limits by snow-closing the previous RFA, but I am an administrator in decently good standing and the RFA was rapidly degenerating into a dramafest with plenty of insulting. I agree that the vote is stupid, but votes are really only stricken when they are from sockpuppets, when users accidentally double-vote, or when the general consensus is that the vote is purely disruptive (which may be true in this case).
