Wikipedian linguists category change

Hi Psychonaut. I just noticed your edit of Category:Wikipedian linguists to remove the fields of interest designation. I originally created the category with only Category:Wikipedians by fields of interest as a parent since I don't believe most trained linguists ever actually "work" as linguists. I always had the impression that most trained linguists got other sorts of jobs. Subsequent to my creating the category, a number of people added themselves and then somebody added Category:Wikipedians by profession as a parent. Now that you've removed Category:Wikipedians by fields of interest as a parent, it sucks for me since I don't belong in the category anymore (I'm only a former linguistics student and amateur linguist). I wouldn't be surprised if there are others in the category in the same situation. Did you intend for someone to create Category:Wikipedians interested in linguistics? What about letting the miscategorized folks know about your change? I only saw your change because I created the category page and had a watch on it. Also, you didn't change the navbox at the top of the page to have the profession category as a parent. Please let me know if you'd strongly object to my reverting your changes. Mike Dillon 15:52, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

Sorry for not tying up those loose ends. I do think, though, that it would be better to separate those formally trained in linguistics from those with a mere "interest" in linguistics, as practically every other profession/field of interest in Category:Wikipedians is split this way. I'll take care of creating separate categories and notifying users so that they can reassign themselves if necessary. —Psychonaut 16:51, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

Because of the vandalism, the username "Psychonaut" was blocked on wikibooks for 1 month. If this is the same psychonaut, i can only assume your account was hijacked or misused. Let me know if there was a problem, and you want the accound unblocked. --Whiteknight 14:42, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
It's not my account; most likely just someone impersonating me. —Psychonaut 15:43, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

BTW, if you were the victim of an impersonator using your account name instead of the person who actually did the vandalism, I will understand. If you want to "claim" the account name on Wikibooks with the same name, let me know and I can unblock you as well. If you want to, you can also leave me a note on my Wikipedia page just in case you have problems trying to get back onto Wikibooks. --Robert Horning 03:00, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
If it is permitted to claim accounts of confirmed impersonators, then yes, I think it would be prudent for me to claim wikibooks:User:Psychonaut, wikispecies:User:Psychonaut, meta:User:Psychonaut, commons:User:Psychonaut, and wikisource:User:Psychonaut; what must I do to gain control of these accounts? (In any event, the likely perpetrator of this impersonation, User:JarlaxleArtemis, was recently unbanned on the condition that he repair damage caused by impersonation on other wikis [1], which I take to mean that he is obligated to hand over control of the accounts to me.) —Psychonaut 23:38, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

What is this about? --Striver 01:25, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

JarlaxleArtemis unbanned

Just a heads up...you had participated in the arbitration case against JarlaxleArtemis. Linuxbeak has since unbanned him, saying that Jarlaxle had apologized. Just wanted to make sure you knew. Ral315 (talk) 09:42, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

Are you sure this person is running a bot? It does not seem like it...I have been following his/her edits all night long...very quick welcomes, but still, it's not impossible to do so I think. --HappyCamper 03:32, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

No, not absolutely certain, but their behaviour is very suspicious. Their vanity articles, vandalism of user pages (including mine), and now RfA makes it pretty clear they're up to no good. New users generally don't know their way around Wikipedia well enough to immediately start doing mass welcomes and nominating themselves for adminship. —Psychonaut 03:35, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
I agree that Polysciwantacracker is an odd case, but not, I think, a bot. Maybe the T-word is more appropriate? --Merovingian 03:39, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
Visit the talk page again. I'm ready to permanently block the account. A good idea? Also, the RFA, should it be completely removed and deleted then? --HappyCamper 03:55, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
I think so. You might also want to investigate the possibility that User:Polysciwantacracker has been himself creating all the user accounts he is welcoming; if that's the case then they should be deleted as well. —Psychonaut 03:57, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
I don't think he's creating all the accouts. That's a lot of logging in and out, etc. --Merovingian 03:59, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
I would permaban, but it's up to you. Also, the RfA needs to go; it's a moot point. --Merovingian 03:59, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Pope Linus

Hello,

Psychonaut...I appreciate your help on the Pope Linus page...but will revert it and open up a discussion on it's talk page. If a consensus is reached I will gladly change it back to your version. :D Thanks, Chooserr

Copyright

I would like to start by thanking you for your help. I was mistaken in the fact that I thought GNU meant General Use...don't know why. I didn't mean to cause any problems, and have added my opinion to one of the pics no longer used. As for The Noa gif...delete it, and if you want the Baby in the womb one too for that isn't my image but one someone uploaded to replace the original. Chooserr

The only image that I believe shouldn't be deleted would be the Suffrajep.jpg one. I wasn't given permission to use it but to the best of my knowledge it is uncopyrighted. I don't see one thing on their website saying Images are copyrighted. And this image is IMHO very important...Chooserr

My RFA

Hi there Psychonaut. I came here because of your vote on my RFA. I wanted to clear the air with everyone who voted oppose because of the link provided by Howcheng and freestylefrappe. I am sorry for ever posting that version of my user page. I really can't control my temper or actions at all, I'm Bipolar. I never meant to use "gay" as an insult, call anyone "gay", or hurt anyone's feelings. I am not trying to pursuade your or anyone elses vote but I would like for every one to think of me better than worse. — Moe ε 15:05, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

In your delete rationale, you stated: No matter how the message is worded, it's going to smack of asserting ownership over an article and discourage others from contributing.

The template now includes the following statement:

Note that this does not connote any form of article ownership, and you do not need any approval to make changes to the article.

The current form may not be perfect, but it's a big improvement. Please consider at least switching to neutral, as the template's biggest opponents have. Thanks. — 0918BRIAN • 2005-12-19 00:11

Vandalism?

Are (you) accusing me of vandalism? I can't believe that (you) would do such a (thing), especially since my (edits) were completely justified. Think before (you) speak. Chooserr 07:55, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Nonsensical pronunciation info?

What is so nonsensical about the following?

Grimace's name is pronounced GRI-muss, and may have influenced the increasing tendency to pronounce the word "grimace" that way, rather than the traditional gri-MACE.

You might object to the quasi-speculation about the increasing tendency of folks to pronounce "grimace" that way [2], but there is a clear difference between the name of Grimace, the McDonaldland character, and the traditional pronunciation of the word grimace ("gri-MACE"); not all dictionaries, or English teachers for that matter, accept "GRI-muss" as correct.

It follows that the pronunciation of his name ought to be mentioned. If you have a better way of phrasing this, please do so.

And if you simply didn't know how "grimace" was pronounced, Grimace may indeed be to blame. ProhibitOnions 19:11, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

My apologies; I was a bit confused by your terminology. I'll reinstate your claim with IPA for better clarity. —Psychonaut 17:30, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, Psychonaut, it certainly looks more scholarly in IPA form... Regards, ProhibitOnions 09:51, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Wikimedia Canada

Hi there! It seems you have been attending the University of Toronto at some point. It might interest you to know that we are trying to form a list of people interested in formaing a local chapter for Canada at Wikimedia Canada. A local chapter will help promote and improve the organization within Canada. Even if you are not living in Canada, if you're interested, you could think about it.--DarkEvil 15:00, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi, please turn this gallery (or at least all the fair use images on it) into a list of links instead or something like that as soon as possible. Wikipedia policy doesn't allow fair use images to be displayed in userspace (see Wikipedia:Fair use#Fair use policy), and acording to this report you have 33 of them on that page (if you have fair use images on other userspace pages please fix those too). I'm working pretty much at random off that list, so don't feel singled out if others on the list with more images have not yet been notified. Eventualy I'll get around to them all (though hopefully I'm not the only one working on it). Thanks in advance. --Sherool (talk) 01:47, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for the alert. I have removed all non-free images from the gallery. —Psychonaut 08:17, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

I renamed this from Hahn [Unicode dash character] Banach theorem to Hahn [ascii hyphen] Banach theorem thinking the previous name was accidental, like someone pasting it from MS Word. I noticed afterwards that you'd changed it on purpose. Was there some reason for that? The hyphen is much more conventional and easier to type, plus almost every link in wikipedia to the Hahn-Banach theorem uses the hyphen, so IMO it's best not to mess with it. Phr 07:40, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

Actually, the en-dash is much more conventional. One tends to see the ASCII hyphen character used for noun–noun compounds on computers simply because, until recently, there was no standard way of representing the en-dash. Even though Unicode has solved this problem, most people still don't know how to input non-ASCII characters with their computers. Another contributing problem may be the low level of typographic literacy amongst the general population. However, ask any professional typesetter whether a hyphen, em-dash, or en-dash is appropriate in this case and she will answer correctly. —Psychonaut 08:09, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:EmilRulez.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:EmilRulez.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. list of musicians by academic degrees

Psycho,

Thanks for the list of musicians by academic degrees. I noticed you posted a comment wondering whether I had a J.D. or a different law degree. I do have a Juris Doctor from DePaul. I know that Michael Gerald also has a Juris Doctor. I'm fairly sure his is also from DePaul. I wrote a letter of recommendation for him, and we keep in touch. John Kezdy who sang for The Effigies, a great Chicago punk band, also got a Juris Doctor from DePaul. Thanks again for the list.

ContiE has impersonated me on other wikis

Hi, I'm in a potentially awkward position with an Administrator. I have read the Wiki pages on dispute resolution but I'm still not sure how to proceed.

The Admin ContiE has a personal grudge against me for reasons I do not fully understand. He has been this way since I began frequenting wikipedia.

I have done work improving the furvert article. He has basically gone on a crusade against any edit I make. He controls every furry category article and several others ruthlessly. He is an iron fist and bans anyone he edit wars with. I had uploaded pictures and he deleted them with no talking. He seems to believe I am every person he has had an edit war against. He is always using personal attacks, calling me troll without reason. I uploaded them again and he voted them for deleted, but to his surprise the person who runs the images, thank you Nv8200p, found they were acceptable once I tagged them properly. Just recently he removed both the images without himself discussing it in the talk page (unless he was the same person who discussed only one) with the edit here [3] Then ContiE assumed bad faith, added his constant insult of troll in the talk page. It appears on a completed different wiki, a comedy one in all things, somebody else stole my username and I believe this was Conti himself and uploaded them. ContiE showed it as his reason. While vandalism like his, I would revert and mention it, he would ban me permanently if I undid his edit. That is why I am asking admins for help. He holds a couple of accounts on wikipedia and I think they are administrators so I have to be careful who I tell about this. Arights 07:07, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Your images

Would you like this website used as a screenshot http://www.fursuitsex.com/ SnowConeYellow 11:05, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

You shouldn't use a screenshot of a website to illustrate anything other than the website itself. If you want to add a picture of fursuit sex to an article, find or make a photograph licensed under the GFDL. —Psychonaut 11:10, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Hmmmmmm.... Is there any case where a fair use image from a website or a webpage screenshot can be used to illustrate a concept related to a website? SnowConeYellow 11:31, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
You should read over Wikipedia:Fair use and related pages. If you have any questions then, ask on the associated talk pages. —Psychonaut 11:39, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Arthur T. Murray

Hi Psychonaut... you might remember when I (or maybe my old FleaPlus alias) tried creating a wikipedia article on Arthur T. Murray a couple of years ago, which was deleted because Murray himself kept on vandalizing it, even though the subject itself is fairly encyclopedic. Do you think the anti-vandalization mechanisms in wikipedia are now good enough for another attempt at creating such an article? --NeuronExMachina 19:53, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

My objection was not so much to his constant vandalism as to the fact that he simply isn't notable enough to warrant an encyclopedia article. —Psychonaut 11:12, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Motion article titles

Please explain in detail your reason for using equal topic dis-ambiguation and not primary topic dis-ambiguation at Talk:Motion (physics). Georgia guy 01:09, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Several articles linking to motion clearly intend the term to be used in a non-physical sense. Also, many of the motion articles on other language Wikipedias are of the form motion (physics). —Psychonaut 01:11, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
Another thing, adding an Afd template without doing 2 additional things won't allow anyone to notice it. These things are:
  1. Creating its Afd page
  2. Adding its Afd page to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion

Georgia guy 01:14, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Hold your horses; I was in the middle of posting the AfD notice when you posted these comments. ;) Anyway, since the matter is now on AfD it can be discussed there instead of here. —Psychonaut 01:16, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Cities named for Soviet leaders

Good job on those. I have been adding cities to the Eponymous cities category as well. Just a question to see if we get on the same page: should we add the category or subcategory to the appropriate redirect page(s) or to the main article. I notice that you did the former. I did the latter. Should we be consistent or just savor the difference? Carlossuarez46 21:25, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

I favour using the redirects, because Stalin (for example) is obviously the namesake of "Sztálinváros", but certainly not the namesake of "Dunaújváros" (to which the city was later renamed). To put a "named-for-Stalin" category marker on the latter seems incorrect to me. —Psychonaut 21:52, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

"Climate changes of 535-536" redirects to "Climate changes of 535-536"?

I was reading the entry on Climate changes of 535-536 and noticed the redirect that seemingly leads to itself. On the talk page (see "Weirdness!"), I saw that someone named Litefantastic was confused as well. When I looked at the the history for the redirect, I noticed that you had created it (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Climate_changes_of_535-536&action=history for the history page or the redirected article's history is shown). How/Why did you create redirect? It seems odd that the titles of the articles appear identical. Is it perhaps that HTML codes were used for the characters in the title at some point? Thanks in advance - badmonkey 10:06, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

The correct title of the article is Climate changes of 535–536, with an en-dash (–). It is incorrect to use a hyphen (-) to separate date ranges. —Psychonaut 12:14, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
