PrimeHunter - help. I just got a notice of something called a deletion notice for a reason WP:BIO Notability. What is this? What should I do? Elliptic curve primality proving

I had not checked carefully that Morain's program is free. I assumed that since he wrote an article about it and since there was a separate section for binaries that it was. Apparently the source used to be available, but is not anymore, because he doesn't want to get bug reports about it. So the implementations are both non-free. Since they are non-free it is not clear that they are implementations of the algorithm claimed or that they do not contain malware. We shouldn't be linking to malware. --MarSch 15:41, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

(This originated at User_talk:MarSch#ECPP_programs) We shouldn't link to known malware but nobody (AFAIK) has ever mentioned the possibility that the 2 programs might contain malware. I would be extremely surprised if they do. I search primes and have cooperated with both authors. I have great respect for their work on Elliptic curve primality proving. Writing these programs is very hard and there are few potential users. Wikipedia links to lots of sites with programs which are not open source (is there a policy against that?). The lacking source means listing them under "Implementations" could be misunderstood, but I think the sites (which also have ECPP information) should be in external links. They are the fastest and most respected publicly available ECPP programs, and they have both set several ECPP records (no other publicly available program has set any AFAIK). By the way, the programs output ECPP certificates (verifiable by other programs) for primes not known at programming time, so they are by definition ECPP implementations. PrimeHunter 16:49, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi Jens,

...You closed Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 December 5#Fictional Her Majesty's Prison Service employees. Category:Fictional wardens pointed and still points to the same CfD debate. There is also a Category:Fictional correctional officers which should perhaps be merged with the others.

Thanks for spotting this oversight; Fictional wardens is now slated to be merged with Fictional prison officers and governors. I've also tagged Fictional correctional officers as a {{categoryredirect}} to Fictional prison officers and governors, so this too should soon be emptied. Smarandache-Wellin number

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Smarandache-Wellin number, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at its talk page. Removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, but the article may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. —David Eppstein 19:35, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Truncatable prime

Thanks. It's a short article with short references, and most information can easily be found in several of them. I don't know policy on this point, but I view the OEIS template as an inline citation equivalent to a footnote, but with no need to repeat under notes/references. The OEIS sequences include definitions, the first truncatable primes, the number of them, and the largest. All this information is also in MathWorld, the first in the references section. By the way, my own website has a page about truncatable primes [1], but I didn't reference it. PrimeHunter 13:40, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Reporting and removing vandalism is vital to the functioning of Wikipedia and all users are encouraged to revert, warn, and report vandalism. However, administrators are generally only able to block users if they have received a recent final warning (one that mentions that the user may be blocked) and they have recently vandalized after that warning was given. The reported user has not yet been blocked because it appears this has not occurred yet. There is no rule against leaving a redirect on your user page. Though several people seem to have disputed the idea since (what policy are they enacting???). Those were comments in an AfD discussion, so other editors could see your actions and possibly use them when judging your claims about the discussed article. I have not examined policies about them. The edit in your name was harmless and I don't mind. I don't know technical details of blocking. I think CheseeyPuff and edits by your IP without logging in could be blocked without affecting your account, but I don't know whether the same holds for "prevent account creation". I have no current plans to request blocking of CheseeyPuff at WP:AIV, but I may watch his edits. PrimeHunter 23:20, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

I have looked at the changes [2] and they don't affect my views. It's original research and it uses a time complexity definition I have never seen before and which is not used in those of your own references I have examined. The definition (to only count memory writes in time complexity) appears strange and of no practical use so I would be surprised if any reliable source has used it. Per WP:V If an article topic has no reliable, third-party sources, Wikipedia should not have an article on it. Brian Reddyb, Rednex

Please stop removing and thereby discounting my involvement in the band Rednex. I find it completely offensive. And if I have developed a cult following amongst people that have an infatuation with my name and therefore decide post it on articles such as that of Saddam Hussein, I apologise, but unfortunately that is out of my control. My involvement in Rednex may have been short lived, but I am credited as one of the initial producers. I have found no source satisfying Wikipedia:Reliable sources to Brian Reddyb being involved with Rednex, while there are sources for the other 3 named producers. I search prime number records and my favorite prime numbers are generally those I discover! I mostly search patterns of prime numbers but if you want an individual number then I suppose I like the largest known doubly palindromic prime. There are two prime number jokes I have seen several times. I once added the "2 is the oddest prime" joke to Wikipedia [3] - reliably sourced of course; we are making an encyclopedia. Thanks for the suggestion. It's not ideal because the two tables have to contain the same number of rows, so I had to cheat a little with "blank" cells. Unsourced Claim on Legendre's Conjecture

I removed the claim written on the Legendre's Conjecture page about "A successful proof of Legendre's conjecture would also resolve Brocard's Conjecture", since you removed my claim that "A successful proof of Legendre's conjecture would also resolve the Goldbach Conjecture". You said that my claim was a false claim. But if my claim was false, then that would be enough to imply that the first claim is false.

One source I read said that Opperman made the following claim in 1883:

Proving that there must be at least five prime numbers between p_n and p_{(n + 1)} for all p ≥ 3 (this is essentially Brocard's conjecture), would be enough to imply that every even number greater that 2 is the sum of two primes (this is the Goldbach conjecture).

I don't know Opperman's work, but p_n and p_{(n + 1)} are by definition consecutive primes so there are no primes between them. Removing the original claim is fine by me. It was me who tagged it with {{fact}} [4] because I seriously doubted it. PrimeHunter 21:34, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

On Lameness

If one were to relentlessly continue a revert war, by changing Copenhagen to Kóbenhavn (sorry couln't find the right "O"), I would consider them quite "lame". One of these editors in particular, P.P. has taken on the guise of a stalker in so far as my editing is concerned. If you take a peek at it (the talk: Cracow vs. Krakoof (sic) reverting), you'll find the argument of changing the English name of the city to be quite lame. Best. Dr. Dan 19:29, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

Thank you again for your assistance the other day!

Now I was wondering if I can get some advice......What do I do when one of the Wikipedia editors seems to have a personal "beef" with one of the article pages? I got the Marc Ostrofsky page all cleaned up and looking good and Richfife has gone in there and added a section that isn't factual or true. Mr. Ostrofsky has communicated this to me.

I have followed the Wikietiquitte and notified Richfife of this and asked that he remove the article prior to formally notifying WP of the slander.

He hasn't touched the article for Mr. Ostrofsky since 11-11-07, I get it cleaned up and he decides to add the slanderish piece on 11-28-07. If you view the discussion page for Marc's article you will see that he has touched the article on multiple occassions since April 2007 and never felt the need to add this until now.

Do you have any advice for me on how to handle this?

Hoe do you feel now about adminship? I know you previously stated that you don't need the tools for what you do now, which is clearly true for all off us, because if one is not an admin, you can't use the admin tools, and therefore can't take part in admin activities. I edited a page about this as the info on it was factualy inacurate and I was wondering how to prove the information is currently wrong. The problem seem to be around citing the information (aparently emails from Connecting for Health managers and an email from the BBC saying they are updating a news story after I made a fromal complaint about them claiming it would be 30,000 GPs and 300 hospitals is not good enough). With some newpapers reporting information that is wrong, how do I cite facts that I can back up? I fixed the mistake you pointed out. Had I simply added a reference when I added that statement this whole mess could have been avoided, an omission I have now remedied. Shanks was referring not to prime gaps but record prime gaps.

Perhaps due to the lateness of the hour or my slight illness, I have not been able to state this transparently and succinctly, and not at all in mathematical terms. If you can think of a better way to phrase this (with or without symbols) I would appreciate you fixing the article; I'm not comfortable leaving the phrasing as it stands now.

My wiki-markup skills are nil, basically (every time I've had to make a report or ask a question, I've had to copy my format from the last person on the page--I know, lame, right??) so I'm much more comfortable, in this case, having you do the job with that Defibrillation vs. User:Owain.davies/Defibrillation issue.

So am I understanding correctly that listing a page in a category is a function of code in the page itself, and NOT on the category page?? So ferexample, to get [[Foo]] to list in [[Category: Words ending in "oo"]] I would link to [[Category: Nonsense-words ending in "oo"]] on page [[Foo]], rather than putting [[Foo]] on the category page??? (Just to give you an idea, I cheated and copied the "nowiki" tags off the original answer to my question. New Year's Resolution #6.02x10²³--learn wikimarkup.)

I am going to respond on your talk page, as I don't want to annoy anyone who wants that talk page discussion not to stray too far from redlinks.

My reasoning is that when someone nominates an article for deletion they are really nominating an article with that title for deletion. WP:DEL used to have a table that spelled this out more clearly, but weak content is not supposed to be grounds for deletion, if the topic of the article is something about which a reasonable article could be written.

The title of the article wasn't "Red Mercury (2008 film)" -- it was just "Red Mercury (Movie)". And the topic clearly was notable.

When I said that I thought the nominator had a responsibility to do a web search, which would have showed them that a real film existed under that name the nominator responded (1) that they had done a web search; (2) were aware of the existence of the real film; and (3) they had a good reasons to ignore the existence of the real film and nominate the title for deletion anyhow.

However the nominator: (1) never volunteered what those good reasons were; (2) withheld from their nomination any mention of the existence of the real film.

The way I see it I am not the person who introduced confusion. The way I see it, it was the nominator who introduced confusion -- by withholding the important information about the existing film. I think we should expect nominators to give fair nominations, that don't withhold important information.

• good points!!! I didn't realize it was in size order, number 1, and number 2, didn't realize these were dimensionless. I just had so much trouble finding this fact, because first I tried powers of 10, and through 7 or so different pages finally arrived at the orders of magnitude page I had seen 5 months ago. Yes, that would save time doing it manually, but only if you can also delete the original species if it has one or more listed subspecies/varieties, i.e.

• Acer nigrum (N)

As for ×, I think it should stay because it signifies that the species is a natural hybrid.

Oops, sorry. Should have checked the article first. f. indicates a taxonomic rank below variety, which itself is below subspecies. The ICBN regulates this kind of stuff and is incredibly boring to most. Hi, and thanks for your comment on my bot request. You suggested that, rather than having a bot handle the edit I was requesting, I could have just inserted an anchor right before the renamed section. I see your point, I think, but I am not quite sure how that would work. From the page you linked to, it seems like all I'd have to do is put [[#SECTION NAME]] right before it in the article. Is that correct? Will it not show up in the TOC then? Incidentally, it would probably also require a comment to make sure that people didn't remove it because they didn't know what it was for, so I still think the bot was the best option. But I'd very much like to know how to do this for future reference. [[#SECTION NAME]] is the way to link to an anchor or normal section (which has to be on the same page when there is no page name before #). An anchor can for example be created with span like this: <span id="Municipality Reform 2007"></span>. I just inserted that on the line before this section so it can now be linked with [[#Municipality Reform 2007]] from this page, and with [[User talk:PrimeHunter#Municipality Reform 2007]] from any page. Re: Searching

Thanks for your comment on context and searching. If you log out of Wikipedia, close out ALL your browser windows and processes (In Microsoft Windows XP)- and use Task manager to close out any unseen instances of Internet Explorer, then start Microsoft Internet Explorer again (any autologin function should be disabled) and go to Wikipedia and search, you will get no context in the search results when you do a search. actually, the proof is quite simple, it follows from recursive definition of n-gonal numbers and pascal's triangle (and can be proven by induction). i don't feel like writing the proof now, but i may do that later if you're still unconvinced. you may also want to note that the relationship is already pointed out elsewhere: Pascal's_triangle#The_diagonals if you still have doubts, please reply, if not, return the article to the previous version.--Ghazer (talk) 02:30, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

in my contribution to the article i wrote: (...)s-th row from the left (or the right)(...) so i DID mean the "diagonals" (if you can even define a diagonal in pascal's triangle), not horizontal rows. actually the term "row" is more appropriate, if you take the definition of "diagonal" from dictionary.com:

Mathematics.

a. connecting two nonadjacent angles or vertices of a polygon or polyhedron, as a straight line.

b. extending from one edge of a solid figure to an opposite edge, as a plane.

(similar to the definition at diagonal) which doesn't seem to correspond to the rows referred to in the article.

as for the second part, there was indeed a misunderstanding on my part - i mixed them with polytopic numbers, as you have noticed, so thanks for correcting it.--Ghazer (talk) 12:00, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

The discussion should really have been linked in the move justification then. It's a very silly move - we're talking about a band that has sold <400,000 units compared to an Emmy-winning television show that drew ten times that for its final episode alone, on top of 46 more episodes and DVD sales.
