Partially reverted change in One Time Pad article

Phr, I partially reverted your change of 18 July 2006 in the One Time Pad article. You had removed some external links at the end, some on the grounds that they were dead links, and some on the grounds that they linked to "bogus implementations". I checked which links were still dead, and didn't restore those. Only one link remained, to an implementation that I have no reason to believe is bogus, so I restored the link. (I forgot to sign in, so the change shows up as from IP address 67.120.84.254). If you think the implementation linked to is bogus, please state why. Thanks. Kfogel

You removed the reference to Number stations, because you would not use "One Time Pads if you run a Number Station". But there are many reasons Why we to believe that One Time Pads are the format of Number stations. Over the years spys have been caputered with one time pads and shortwave radios. The reson for using one time pads, is not just security but the simple use of pen and paper methode in the field.

Need help on using the Fair Use tag

"No consensus" is between keep and delete. Merge is a keep !vote anyway. Merge doesn't need AfD - editors can do it. It was a poor time to nominate it, as things are still uncertain. I have no issue if you ask the candidate on his talk page. But asking personal questions ("have you read this book") should stay off the main RFA page. Asking the candidate questions about whether he/she understands copyright policy are one thing, promoting a particular book is another. More Kosovo weirdness

We've had some disruption on Kosovo, Kosovo Liberation Army and Template:Kosovo-InfoBox from an anonymous user who's been using multiple proxy servers to make highly contentious edits and personal attacks against me. It would appear that the person responsible is the operator of the Tonycdp account. I'd be grateful if you could check my reasoning on User talk:ChrisO/Tonycdp and let me know what you think. If I'm right, the user in question has clearly been acting dishonestly and disruptively; the question is, what should we do about it? -- ChrisO 18:58, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

A Question, if you will please

May I ask, Phr, what is the motivation? It is not just you, but several editors who perform a similar action. I don't understand it and since you are the most recent editor who did, who might respond honestly (User:Fahrenheit451 won't respond at all), I am asking you. I once had an arbitration. I am constrained from editing Scientology articles. Yet it seems, almost anywhere I post, an editor comes along and mentions my past arbitration. It has never, in any instance had any application to the discussion going on. I ask because of your recent post editing difference. My question is, "Of what relevence is the mention of my months ago arbitration to what is being discussed?" Or, if you prefer, "why do you mention it?" Google ranking

My understanding from the recurring discussions on Wikipedia is that links on Talk pages and User pages don't get followed by robots and so don't count towards Google rank or other ratings. It's hard to tell looking at our website logs because the proportion of Wikipedia hits is so small. I wondered if you had a reference for your concern about this subject. Video formats

It is now rare to originate video in an open format. Camera outputs such as DV, Digibeta, MPEG2 and MPEG4 are all proprietary. So Wikipedia's video policy can (in practice) only extend to the format the video is stored in on its servers - video has to be converted at some stage. So the maximum a solution for Wikipedia needs is conversion into a free format at the publishing stage. Although, as it happens, FORscene could extend much further. What do you think? One step at a time

I appreciate that you have a plausible viewpoint. This is why I linked to the videos in the answers to the questions. So it is no coincidence that this issue has arisen in my RfA. You will also notice that the Video policy page on Meta has also had some video links for months. This is not some secret plot to subvert foundation issues. Like RfA, it is no big deal. It is a good way of teasing out requirements.

The process is to find the constraints first, and then fit the solution to these. I know people often start with the solution and then tell people the constraints, but this is not as productive. Anyway, the next step I'd like you to take is to acknowledge that "Free on Wikipedia" does not mean restricted everyone/anywhere else. You have stated in my RfA that you think that Free on Wikipedia is inconsistent with foundation issues, and this risks triggering a splurge of me-toos from people who will not take as much care as you. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

Rudy Colombini

Dear Phr,

I noticed you were looking into spamming by Rudy Colombini. Good job investigating this by the way. Anyway, I know just a little about this guy and maybe able to fill in some potential gaps in the information. Maybe some of this will be able to stop future spam from him, as he appears to be a really prolific spammer not just on Wikipedia but around the internet.

1. First of all, he runs all of his businesses through a company called Pacific Equities West LLC and their offices are on the ground floor of the Nob Hill Hotel, 835 Hyde Street. They're a pretty disorganised bunch of 10-12 persons and fittingly have two websties.. http://www.pacificeq.com/ and http://pacificequitieswest.com/contact.html.

2. On thier website you will see the much talked about 1353-1355 Bush Street. Actually the user Zepheus was correct - it is an apartment building of sorts, but it goes by a coulpe of names - The Nob Hill Pension http://pacificequitieswest.com/photo_html/bushstreet.html or The James Court Hotel http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60713-d226827-Reviews-James_Court_Hotel-San_Francisco_California.html. Its not much of a hotel really - its more like a dorm, as it's 90% filled with students from the California Culinary Institute down the road. He has plans to set it up as a musical venue but these this has stalled and they are at least 3-4 years away from opening. Perhaps it will never open at all, as aparently local residents have been objecting as they're worried about potential noise etc. As you mention that did not stop him from advertising it. For some odd reason this same project seems to go by three different names - 'SFMusicCity', 'San Francisco Rock and Roll Hall of Fame', and 'Rudy Colombini's Center for the Performing Arts', but no matter what the name, none of them appear to exist at all, and its basically just a dorm. He has apparently advertised these three all over the internet, not just on Wikipedia, as if they exist, and as of they are three seperate ventures...cheeky!

3. I have also deleted references to the "Nob Hill Blog", "Union Square Blog" and the "North Beach Blog" on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Neighborhoods_in_San_Francisco%2C_California&diff=prev&oldid=187545559 I did this because they were placed there by the same IP address as the other spam relating to Rudy Colombini and also because these blogs do nothing but heavily advertise his hotels and the non-existent Musical venue. I am suspicious that the anonymous blogger here that lists his occupation as 'professional hipster' (lame!) is actually Rudy himself?

4. I have just joined up on WikiTravel, where he has apparently done even more spamming there than on Wikipedia - see http://wikitravel.org/wiki/en/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&limit=500&target=66.47.253.226 He keeps advertising his hotels in every area of the city like they are omnipresent or something. Also he has been persistently deleting references to other hotels and replacing them with his own. Most of the time though he just logs in and cuts and copies the references to his hotels so that they appear above everyone elses, so that they appear first on the list - in an obvious attempt to make them more visible.

In relation to the last point, I was hoping that you could actually help me here as I am completely new to the 'Wiki' thing. I know that you are allowed to advertise on Wikitravel, but clearly you are not supposed to be deleting references to your competitors and spamming venues that do not exist. I was thinking of setting up a page like you did to draw attention to this matter..kind a like a 'name and shame' thing, and perhaps ask other genuine Wiki contributors to help in stopping further spam from this guy. It's hard though, as unlike on Wikipedia, I cannot seem to find any links to staff on Wikitravel to help me. Do you have any ideas in that regard?
