archive-url[edit]

Regarding your recent edit to List of power stations in South Carolina. There often is a better way than deleting the citation with a dead url.

I suggest you become acquainted with the Wayback Machine web site for finding the URL for an archived copy of an obsolete web site. Go to archive.org and paste in the dead-link URL from the citation. The wayback machine will show you the dates that the site was archived. Pick one, and you will see the page as it was saved. Take the url for the archived copy, and put it into problem cite template using |archive-url= ... |archive-date=... parameters.

Look at some cite templates in the source code for wikipedia pages, you will see how this works. (Or you may know all this already and decided it was better to junk the old citation and find a replacement, rather than an archive copy.)

I've put your talk page on my watch list for the next week, if you respond here I will see it. -- M.boli (talk) 23:40, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, not something I knew at all... I'm familiar with the site but I didn't even think to search it up. I'm still fairly new here so I appreciate the help! I just checked and the most recent archive was from 2018, but the info is dated to October 2008, so it's probably worth scrapping under WP:OLDSOURCES anyway. Maybe an issue with WP:NPOV too, but I guess the question is about the verifiability of the claim since it's a matter of fact rather than opinion. My hope is to replace the citation with the actual DHEC permit, but I haven't had a chance yet to look and see if it's available online.
Anyway, thank you for the help! I've recently been working on improving/adding information about power stations in SC, but I am still learning the ropes! Phosphoreux (talk) 08:19, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Righto!
A year ago I updated information on the Jeffries hydroelectric station, which is covered briefly in the Pinopolis Dam article. I couldn't find much information, but more than nothing. Seeing as you are attending to this area, I figure I'd point you at it. -- M.boli (talk) 13:56, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I had no intention of greenwashing or avoiding coal as a "dirty" word. I based these two articles off of the existing Cross Generating Station article, which does not mention coal in the headline. I would have no objections to changing the first line to include a link to Coal-fired power station, as well as adding that retroactively to the article on Cross. I am new (these are my first ever drafts), and I hope it is clear that all my contributions so far have been in WP:GOODFAITH. Thanks! Phosphoreux (talk) 18:58, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The reason I have not progressed on editing this article is because I have been waiting for guidance on two other draft articles, Draft:Winyah Generating Station and Draft:A.M. Williams Generating Station, two large coal-fired power plants in South Carolina. However, both have been denied twice now and neither reviewer has been willing or able to give me any assistance. The first reviewer denied the articles for "greenwashing" and accused me of trying to downplay that these are coal plants. I was frankly somewhat offended--both articles were drafted almost entirely based upon Cross Generating Station and the language I used was already used on that published article--but I made changes to address that user's concerns by including a link to coal-fired power plants. However, that user did not respond to me when I posted on their talk page requesting further review based upon my changes to address their concerns. I waited a couple of months before resubmitting for another review. Again I was denied, this time by a second user because the sources were not "in-depth" enough. I requested clarification from that user as to what this meant, again pointing out that I had simply used the same sources used in the existing article on Cross, including official federal and state government information from the Energy Information Administration and South Carolina Public Service Commission. Again, they did not respond to my request. Admittedly, I am somewhat frustrated, because all I'm trying to do is add these articles to Wikipedia because I believe it is detrimental to the site that Cross gets an article but not the other coal plants in South Carolina. But I keep facing roadblocks and denials without receiving any real guidance on what to change, all while the objections to my articles are equally true of the extant Cross article which I based these articles upon in the first place! I apologize for the soapbox, but clearly in the many years since the Cross article was published, no one has bothered to try and document these other stations on here, and in spite of my attempts to do so I have faced several months of unhelpful and dismissive attitudes from two reviewers now. Frankly, it has all but killed my enthusiasm for editing on this site. If the powers that be have deemed my articles unfit, then so be it, but I would be lying if I pretended that this whole process hasn't felt arbitrary and capricious.
