Social media and politics

Hi Philipnelson99,

I believe you have made a mistake in revoking what I published on Social media and Politics today. I would like to question why you have done so? Thank you. Cmn22 (talk) 21:24, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

@Cmn22 I was specifically referencing [1]. I apologize if this was a good faith edit. Regarding your other edits that I rolled back are those original research, if so you should refrain from adding them again. If not, feel free to add them back and I encourage you to use the article talk page when adding such a large amount of information. Also, some of the additions you added didn't adhere to the manual of style, for example, asking a question in the context of an article in not encyclopedic. Philipnelson99 (talk) 21:37, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
No worries at all, thank you for explaining. This edit was made as part of a portfolio for university, so the edit was done academically and in good faith. It is my first time using wikipedia, so I apologise for anything not matching the correct example. Thank you, Cmn22 (talk) 21:49, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

Using talk page as forum?

Hi Phil. I am very confused about your removal of the question I posted on the Mathematics Reference Desk. I used to be a regular contributor to the Reference Desk and would have assumed that it is a place to discuss any knowledge-based question when a person is doing research, to find better sources. I noticed you referred to it as an "article talk page", which is not the case. Was this a mistake?

Have the rules for the Reference Desk narrowed recently, to only allow questions that can result in a direct improvement to one or more Wikipedia articles? When I was active about 7-8 years ago, this was more the exception, rather than the rule. 142.127.187.55 (talk) 20:56, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

Apologies, that was an error on my part. Philipnelson99 (talk) 20:58, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

David Buehler

David is my little brother and everything I wrote is 100% accurate. I thought it might get banned though, sorry AJBuehler (talk) 01:43, 14 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi @AJBuehler, if you are actually this person's brother, you have a conflict of interest, and you need to properly disclose it immediately. Furthermore, since this person is currently alive, any material added to their page must adhere to the biography of living person policies which means that contentious material must be deleted immediately. In addition to this, I think mentioning relatives, like you did, clearly violates the privacy of names policy. I hope this explains why I reverted your edits. Reverted update

Hello hopefully I am doing this correctly because I do not know much about Wikipedia I was just trying to update the incorrect information that is currently posted. I’m not sure how to cite my source other than the fact that my family is the one that purchased the property, and it is no longer open for the public to walk around the grounds. We are attempting to correct the things we found online with people saying it is open to the public because there are people coming onto the property and walking through our home, as well as removing posted signs. I’m assuming because it is still saying online in numerous places that it is a place to go when that is currently no longer the case. We would kindly appreciate if the update could be replaced so they understand they are in fact currently trespassing. 2600:1005:B141:5C64:B000:3E55:A06C:E8D1 (talk) 22:19, 18 January 2023 (UTC)

RE: Edit

Hi Philip

I replied to your message but you did say to post on your wall (I'm new to this and not sure how this works).

The edits I made were to improve the article - in addition to this, this article is literally quoting from my site without a citation.

The article links to websites by other mortgage brokers - so linking to my site (which is considered the authority on reverse mortgages in Canada) should not be blocked.

I am a licensed Mortgage Professional in Canada - here's my license - [1]http://mbsweblist.fsco.gov.on.ca/ShowLicence.aspx?M14002251~. My brokerage license number and info is on my site that I linked to (as is required by Canadian regulations). I am considered one of (if not the) the foremost experts in reverse mortgages in Canada and have written dozens of articles on them. You can see them all here: [2]https://www.reversemortgagepros.ca/news/

Please reconsider and let me know if I am able to edit and improve this article - there are still many basic things in it that are actually completely wrong.

Thanks,

Mich Sneddon, CPA, CA

Note: I should also mention that my website was previously linked to (and is quoted) in this article but at some point someone deleted it. 174.95.161.162 (talk) 17:44, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not for advertising a business. If you're genuinely not trying to advertise, then, I suggest discussing your issues on the the article talk page. I do see you've been warned again for adding promotional material the article though. Philipnelson99 (talk) 17:59, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
Ok I have done that - what happens now?
It is important this information is corrected - a few of my customers pointed out this incorrect information out and this is a demographic of society (people over 55) that are more vulnerable to misinformation than others.
Wikipedia is seen as a 'trusted' source so it having false information is not good. 174.95.161.162 (talk) 18:25, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
Further note: this is a chunk of information in the article (including a quote) that's literally stolen word for word from my website too - so if not being referenced or cited I'd like this quote removed. 174.95.161.162 (talk) 18:36, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
Which part is that? And can you point me to the where it is on your site as well? Philipnelson99 (talk) 18:56, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
"Real estate appraisal = $150–$400[citation needed]
Legal advice = $450–$700[citation needed]
Other legal, closing, and administrative costs = $1,750[citation needed]"
This was lifted from my site - from here: https://www.reversemortgagepros.ca/costs-and-fees/
The legal costs have since been updated on my site (as costs change over time) - you'll need to update the article as what it has stated is incorrect (this is what used to be charged when there was only 1 lender in the market - now there are various lenders and each have different fee structures)
"Of these costs, only the real estate appraisal is paid upfront (out of pocket); the remaining costs are instead deducted from the reverse mortgage proceeds." taken from the same article - not word for word - I'm the only person that I know of in Canada to have written about this in detail - particularly the concept of costs being upfront (out of pocket) and deducted from proceeds.
"The money from the reverse mortgage can be used for any purpose: to repair a home, to pay for in-home care, to deal with an emergency, or simply to cover day-to-day expenses"
Lifted word for word from this article I wrote - https://www.reversemortgagepros.ca/8-interesting-ways-to-use/ - what's weird is that I'm quoted here but someone deleted the reference
"At present, reverse mortgages are available in all the Canadian provinces and territories with the exception of Yukon."
Lifted from my FAQ at the bottom of this page https://www.reversemortgagepros.ca/reverse-mortgage/
Also covered in the free guide that you can download on the same page
"Money received in a reverse mortgage is an advance and is not taxable income."
Taken from https://www.reversemortgagepros.ca/pros-and-cons/
Thanks,
Mich Sneddon, CPA, CA 174.95.161.162 (talk) 20:18, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
Much of this was originally added in 2012 by Molly-in-md (talk · contribs) and sourced to government sites that predate the creation of yours and modified over time. The Yukon bit was added by an IP claiming to be you here in 2017, and so on. Regardless, the unsourced material needs to be removed. I'll do that now. Sam Kuru (talk) 00:14, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
Unfortunately my IP changed as I installed a new modem over the weekend - so I've made an account to keep track of everything. Thanks for your info Sam - I see it's been updated and much of the incorrect info removed - I'll update the remaining info that's also incorrect. Some things it's impossible to ad references for since they don't really exist and don't really work that way in this industry - but since you won't accept my site as a leading authority on reverse mortgages, I'll just update them with no references. Mich Sneddon, CPA, CA (talk) 19:02, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
@Mich Sneddon, CPA, CA Please look at policy prohibiting original research, additionally any material that doesn't have a source my be removed at any time. I'm sure I also speak for @Kuru when I ask that you not add to the many problems the article already has by adding unsourced content or original research. Philipnelson99 (talk) 19:11, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
I get it - but you're asking me not to include my articles as sources. There simply aren't that many people that write about reverse mortgages in Canada as regularly as I do. Incorrect information that is sourced to outdated articles is much worse than unsourced but correct information surely? Particularly given the nature of this product and it's intended target audience. I think you'd agree that financial products need extra care - particularly financial products targeted to a market of folks aged over 55. I also understand this is creating issues for you - but trust me when I have customers quoting incorrect information on Wikipedia as a source it creates many more problems for me and other industry experts. Mich Sneddon, CPA, CA (talk) 19:24, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

Hello! I was trying to follow WP:DABPRIMARYTOPIC. Why did you revert my edit? Since it is unlikely this primary topic is what readers are looking for if they have reached the disambiguation page, it should not be mixed in with the other links. As stated above, it is recommended that the link back to the primary topic appear at the top, in a brief explanatory sentence. Onlk (talk) 23:09, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

@Onlk I'm sorry, that was a mistake on my part. Philipnelson99 (talk) 23:14, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi! Sorry about the change, i didn't know how to cite an article, so i didn't do it. I've found many articles that have stated that her dad is a iranian-azeri and only her mom is an immigrant from Azerbaijan. here is one of the links i found referencing that.https://allfamousbirthday.com/googoosh/ if it would be possible can you please change it, and use this website to cite it. Get back to me when you can, Thank you 104.249.68.246 (talk) 04:13, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

Sorry but that doesn't look like a reliable source so I will not be adding that info into the article. Philipnelson99 (talk) 04:19, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

Zhao Chunli

How is it not constructive? It is literally the character's name in the film. The character is a principal character of the film, so would be a term one would use to find the article containing the film character. -- 64.229.90.199 (talk) 04:30, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

I reverted an edit of yours (or someone who is editing at your IP address) in which a page about a mass shooting event was redirected to a fictional character. Does that need anymore explanation? Philipnelson99 (talk) 04:33, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
Perhaps you meant to redirect the other way? Philipnelson99 (talk) 04:38, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
You reverted an edit about a redirect to an article. The redirect Zhao Chunli points to the mass shooting article, not the film article. The character in the film and the suspect in the shootings have the same name (spelled as "Zhao Chun-li" in the film dialogue and "Zhao Chunli" accordingt to the NYT for the shooting). But the reverted hatnote is {{redirect}} template hatnote which is to indicate when an incoming redirect has other sues. That does need much more explanation, since incoming redirects with other uses normally are handled with hatnotes. This is normal, That the article having a hatnote is a mass shooting article does not change the fact that it's also the name of a film character that is a principal character of a rather prominent film. Crime articles do carry hatnotes, and some of those hatnotes are for incoming redirects that have other uses. Neither Zhao nor Chunli are particularly rare, so one can expect multiple uses of this name. -- 64.229.90.199 (talk) 04:45, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
Oh! I see, I apologize, I'll undo my revert. That was a mistake. I misread the edit as you redirecting the entire page, not indicating that the name would redirect to the event's page. This is fine. Sorry about that!! Philipnelson99 (talk) 04:52, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for the attention -- 64.229.90.199 (talk) 04:54, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
I suppose one solution would be to convert the redirect into a 2-entry disambiguation page. -- 64.229.90.199 (talk) 04:45, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

They removed the Chinese ownership again. Check the MG cars listing to see how that reads. It’s an honest listing. I’m not sure why these people are allowed to hide the ownerships of polestar. Ali baba is listed on the U.S. stock market but it’s a chinese company. It is so dishonest that some people keep deleting ownership 120.21.74.167 (talk) 21:21, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

I do think you removed in error. All the additions were factual and supported by evidence form the IPCC and the IEA. Thanks for reverting my edit to the article; Lochee. This is my first edit fir a very long time and I clearly made a big mistake. Virginia 2nd district

not sure why you reverted my edit when on the wikipedia page for 2016 presidential election results in Virginia it says Trump won the district 48-45... plus based on election data it makes no sense how Clinton would've won the district- 71.178.214.235 (talk) 18:39, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

@71.178.214.235: the section you changed is for statewide results not district wide, thus your edit contained a factual error. Philipnelson99 (talk) 18:47, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
no the section was referring to the results of Virginia's 2nd district in specific statewide races. If what you were saying was true then literally every other data point in the section would be incorrect- It makes no sense why a page about a specific Virginia congressional district would contain results for the entire state of Virginia... 71.178.214.235 (talk) 18:53, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
@Discospinster can you explain why you reverted an edit on this page from this editor? Philipnelson99 (talk) 18:56, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
I'm perfectly fine being incorrect, but I believe the explanation I provided was sufficient justification for the revert. Philipnelson99 (talk) 19:00, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
Because it was an unexplained change to cited content. ... discospinster talk 19:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
I have credible sources to back up my change, the original source was about the statewide results of the 2016 election in Virginia while the wikipedia page is about results in Virginia's 2nd Congressional district in specific statewide races. @Philipnelson99's justification does not make sense as the page is referring to the results of Virginia's 2nd district in specific statewide races. The current data also does not match the wikipedia page for 2016 presidential election results in Virginia, where it says Trump won Virginia's 2nd district 48 - 45%. 71.178.214.235 (talk) 19:07, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

@71.178.214.235 Please see WP:DAILYKOS, there's general consensus that this source should never be used. Philipnelson99 (talk) 19:24, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
I'm using Daily Kos because it publishes election results by congressional districts. The same article cites Daily Kos for another data point. 71.178.214.235 (talk) 19:32, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
@71.178.214.235 I know but just because someone in the past used a source considered unreliable doesn't give everyone license to! If you find a source that's listed at WP:RSP, I'd encourage you to replace it. Philipnelson99 (talk) 19:35, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

I tend to learn better by experience, but I realize that there are places where you should really just read the user manual. Please accept this sweet dessert as a peace offering for you. ~Tallulah (talk) 06:15, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

You’re no trouble, everyone makes mistakes and the stakes and consequences for mistakes here are really not that high. Whatever you did I’m sure it wasn’t bad Justanotherguy54 (talk) 01:12, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

Sorry for editing of credence hospital but I have taken from his website Baraigwool (talk) 14:02, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

Kari Norgaard Page

I feel like the links showing her research reports and such are relevant, seeing as she has switched her focus to working with Indigenous peoples more. I might be trying to fix this in the wrong way, but feel free to let me know if you think that there's a better way to incorporate her current work into her page. Adding an external link is different from adding a reference. If you were trying to add a source in good faith, I"m sorry but the link added here is a the list of reliable sources indicates that wordpress sites should never be used as sources. Philipnelson99 (talk) 21:54, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
Okay. I just noticed you deleted a bunch of other things too, would you care to explain why that is? SunSilverBerry (talk) 21:56, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
I rolled those edits back. We don't need a curricula vitae for biographies of professors.Philipnelson99 (talk) 22:17, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

Julie Benko

Julie Benko's birthplace was Washington, DC. I changed it to that (I was in the room) and it keeps reverting to Fairfield, Connecticut as her birthplace such that it now says she was born in Fairfield, CT and moved to Fairfield, CT at the age of 3 which makes no sense at all.

@Stevebenko54 Wikipedia does not allow personal experience or original research. If you've got an independent and reliable source for the info, feel free to add it back in. Philipnelson99 (talk) 22:20, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

The Saturday Independent

Hey Philip. I just recently tried to edit an old Wikipedia, listing for my newspaper, the Saturday independent that I owned and operated for 10 years. The paper is no longer in business, but I didn’t want to make some corrections and some additions to our Wikipedia page. Thanks a lot for looking out for the edits and all. But I’m legitimate. You can check me out. I’m Chip Ramsey. TardyBardo (talk) 22:54, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi @TardyBardo, Wikipedia does not allow original research or primary sourcing of material. If you add the material back, please add a reliable secondary source for your claims. Also, you will need to declare your conflict of interest immediately, if you continue to edit the page. Philipnelson99 (talk) 22:58, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

?????

Why did you give me a level 3 warning? 2601:600:C87F:2310:3900:962:723F:3440 (talk) 23:08, 29 January 2023 (UTC)

Malcolm Gaskill

Hello. I am trying to change Professor Malcolm Gaskill's photo, from the original British Library Zoom shot, to a better image. I have never tried to edit Wikipedia before, so I am not sure really what I am doing. As far as I can tell, immediately after I attempted to change the image, you reverted it back to the previous, poorer image. Can you please explain what I am doing wrong. Thanks. Regards, ES 95.150.230.202 (talk) 22:19, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

See Help:Images on how to correctly use images in articles. Philipnelson99 (talk) 22:25, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I'm afraid that I am technically pretty incompetent. Are you able to change this image yourself, to something more appropriate? Much obliged. Best Regards, ES. 95.150.230.202 (talk) 22:29, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
