Why can't I edit some particular pages?
Some pages that have been vandalized repeatedly are semi-protected, meaning that editing by new or unregistered users is prohibited through technical measures. If you have an account that is four days old and has made at least 10 edits, then you can bypass semi-protection and edit any semi-protected page. Some pages, such as highly visible templates, are fully-protected, meaning that only administrators can edit them. If this is not the case, you may have been blocked or your IP address caught up in a range block.
Where can I experiment with editing Wikipedia?
How do I create an article?
See how to create your first article, then use the Article Wizard to create one, and add references to the article as explained below.
How do I create citations?
  1. Do a search on Google or your preferred search engine for the subject of the Wikipedia article that you want to create a citation for.
  2. Find a website that supports the claim you are trying to find a citation for.
  3. In a new tab/window, go to the citation generator, click on the 'An arbitrary website' bubble, and fill out as many fields as you can about the website you just found.
  4. Click the 'Get reference wiki text' button.
  5. Highlight, and then copy (Ctrl+C or Apple+C), the resulting text (it will be something like <ref> {{cite web | .... }}</ref>, copy the whole thing).
  6. In the Wikipedia article, after the claim you found a citation for, paste (Ctrl+V or Apple+V) the text you copied.
  7. If the article does not have a References or Notes section (or the like), add this to the bottom of the page, but above the External Links section and the categories:
==References==
{{Reflist}}
What is a WikiProject, and how do I join one?
A WikiProject is a group of editors that are interested in improving the coverage of certain topics on Wikipedia. (See this page for a complete list of WikiProjects.) If you would like to help, add your username to the list that is on the bottom of the WikiProject page.

Disambiguation link notification for October 30[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Giuseppe, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Pino and Peppino. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hi[edit]

Why did you move this page [1]? Is there some policy that prefers full names even if it isn't common? DareshMohan (talk) 06:50, 17 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I thought moving it to his full name would make more sense since that's how most pages related to people are anyway, and it's not his pen/stage name (some people are credited with only their first name). If you still don't agree with me, I will move it back (with a redirect), and leave moving pages for fixing spelling errors

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:38, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

November 2023[edit]

Information icon Hello. I have noticed that you often edit without using an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This helps your fellow editors use their time more productively, rather than spending it unnecessarily scrutinizing and verifying your work. Even a short summary is better than no summary, and summaries are particularly important for large, complex, or potentially controversial edits. To help yourself remember, you may wish to check the "prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" box in your preferences. Thanks! Danners430 (talk) 07:21, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I just turned on that preference. OpalYosutebito (talk) 14:37, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for removing the deprecated border parameter from film infoboxes. Can you also do the same with image_size please? Kailash29792 (talk) 05:16, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Pages using infobox organization with motto or pledge‎[edit]

Just curious, are you using AutoWikiBrowser? And if you are, I'd like to help.Naraht (talk) 16:16, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I just applied for it OpalYosutebito (talk) 16:46, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You've been doing this by hand? AWB should make it easier and if you would like to work on the query together let me know. Easiest may be one of us starting with organization_motto and pledge to at least get those without getting in the way of the others. (no organization_motto or pledge at this point.)Naraht (talk) 22:08, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds great. I'll let you know as soon as I get approved for using the bot. I'm also planning on cleaning up Category:Pages using infobox film with unknown parameters - OpalYosutebito (talk) 22:37, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Some things that you may or may not know. The Sort criteria in the unknown parameter pages are (almost) always done as "bad parameter" followed by the name of the article. The effect of this is that a large group of articles in alphabetical order in one of these categories almost always have the same bad parameter. So for example, in Category:Pages using infobox film with unknown parameters , the first 8 or 9 pages (didn't count) are all in order (except 2 entries) under the letter B so, they all have the same bad entry, which is Border. (one of the others is Box Office). So you search and remove Border. However, it is possible that such a parameter could have the pipe prior to it on the left on the line, or on the right (or theoretically neither, but unlikely) and there could be space before and after. After you get it, I'll send you the combinations of regex that I tend to use. If I get on tonight, I'll try to take out a chunk of the motto/pledge. Let me know what your status is.Naraht (talk) 23:03, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think I already knew that, thanks OpalYosutebito (talk) 23:30, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
NP. I was able to do most of "N" and "O" using AWB, but as you can tell, it didn't get *everything* some of them are in a form that trying to make a regex to get them is too complicated, like if all of the infobox is placed on one line (like say cite web is normally done). I'll keep attacking it using AWB when I have a chance. And no, I don't have the ability to approve people in AWB. :(Naraht (talk) 00:20, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not gonna use the bot for motto and pledge because more often than not I've seen sources in there which could screw things up and get us in trouble if they're removed - OpalYosutebito (talk) 00:22, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Which is why the user needs to look at each one before saving. AWB gives more control than pure Bots do. I'll keep going on motto. Naraht (talk) 00:28, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to be busy for the next couple of days due to final exams, but I'll still be available if anything happens - OpalYosutebito (talk) 02:57, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Update: I got approved to use the bot, and I'm doing my best to get stuff done. I'll let you know if things go south - OpalYosutebito (talk) 03:49, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. I'll head to bed soon, but I'm into the Ss, Didn't catch all of them, but we are down to around 700 with what I've done so far.Naraht (talk) 04:07, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nite. I hope I'm helping out :D OpalYosutebito (talk) 04:08, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Saw your request for AWB access and wanted to reach out with an offer to help if needed. I've long had tackling unknown parameter categories on my list of potential tasks and find them perfect candidates for AWB work, but potentially quite tricky to make regexs which is the part I would be happy to help with. I also noticed that there's a lot of empty bad parameters and I see no reason why those shouldn't be done using a bot which I could seek approval for if you want. --Trialpears (talk) 15:20, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't been using regexs, but it would still be great if you had a bot to help out too - OpalYosutebito (talk) 15:42, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Trialpears I (naraht, not OpalYosutebito) am using AWB to handle some and I use four different regexes to handle pipe before, pipe after and a couple of other situations as well. I *think* it is handling about 75% of the ones that are motto (the other two parameters that feed into that cat aren't generating any). All of these are in Find and Replace - advanced settings replacements with everything checked. (and all of these are replaced with |)
  • \| *motto *= *[^|]+\n\|
  • \|\n *motto *= *[^|]+\|
  • \|\n *motto *= *\|
  • \| *motto *= *\n\|
Naraht (talk) 16:00, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nice! I would use something like\|\s*motto\s*=[^|{}]*({{[^}]+}})?[^|}]*. This way it can also deal with parameters containing a template and if the parameter is the last one in the infobox with only one regex. \s means any whitespace character so tabs, spaces and newlines and is probably the most useful character set imo. If you want to know more about what everything means I would recommend regex101.com which explains everything and has a regex debugger.
I also filed a quick BRFA. No idea how long it will take since it was a long time since last time I filed one. Probably between a day and a month. --Trialpears (talk) 16:21, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Trialpears I know what it means, I just didn't think it was quite safe enough. For example, Philodemic Society has | motto = {{ubl|{{lang|la|Eloquentiam Libertati Devinctam}}|([[Latin]] for "Eloquence in Defense of Liberty")}} and it thinks the end of the entry is in the pipe prior to ([[. I am trying to use what you had though, but expecting them to have issues, and it does appear to be getting some of the rest.Naraht (talk) 03:20, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You could expand it to \|\s*motto\s*=[^|{}]*({{[^{}]*({{[^{}]*}})?[^{}]*}})?[^|}]* to deal with nested templates. If you need to remove more templates you can always add in options for that as well, the expression just grows and the risk you make mistakes when writing the regex increases. Generally I go back and forth quite a bit between running AWB and improving my replacements since I enjoy that part and it usually makes it faster in the long run. --Trialpears (talk) 05:26, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all your help! I don't have much patience when it comes to programming/coding with bots, but maybe one day, we'll make a regex script or something that gets rid of those nonexistent/unknown parameters once and for all! - OpalYosutebito (talk) 01:24, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It seems like you guys have done an incredibly amount of work on these categories. Is approval for bot removal still of interest for other categories or is it kind of moot now? If so I will withdraw the BRFA. Trialpears (talk) 20:46, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
TrialpearsI periodically do these, the question is whether a bot would simply be given an infobox, or an infobox and a bad parameter.Naraht (talk) 00:36, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm thinking it would only remove certain manually specified empty parameters to keep it as simple as possible. If it's common for there being large And I'm not planning on it being run on a schedule, but rather on request. There's no technical reason why it couldn't be run on a schedule removing all empty parameters from a large number of pages, but that would need an explicit consensus to implement. Trialpears (talk) 23:08, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Since the end goal is to clean up the unknown parameters from the infoboxes...
Here's the method I use to get rid of unknown parameters (for reference: right now I'm working on cleaning up the infobox Russian inhabited locality template calls): Under "Options", I open "Advanced Settings", and I create a new "in Template call" rule under the "Rule" tab. It's important to know that in order for this to work for all pages in the category, you need to need to take redirects into consideration (ex: Infobox Russian village redirects to Infobox Russian inhabited locality, which is what I'm ultimately focused on). I hope my explanation made sense, and I hope this method helps everyone out a bit more - OpalYosutebito (talk) 21:59, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nonexistent parameters[edit]

The LOGO parameter of the organization template is technically obsolete; it was removed from the template a couple of years ago, so it did exist. Mgrē@sŏn (Talk) 04:35, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Good to know, thanks. I'll work more on Wikipedia over winter break - OpalYosutebito (talk) 05:30, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the rollback, but you made a mess of something there; not quite sure what. I invite you to look again! Josh Milburn (talk) 22:08, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yeah. Now I understand. I accidentally removed a parameter without removing its value. I hope my more recent edit cleaned it up - OpalYosutebito (talk) 22:44, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

1998 CPSL League Cup[edit]

Hi there, just wanted to bring your attention to various errors created by your recent edit of 1998 CPSL League Cup. Your changes broke the infobox and duplicated the first paragraph. No big deal, it's been fixed - mostly I wanted to give you a heads up in case this was the result of a script running amok somehow. If it was just an oversight, no worries. Thanks, Jessicapierce (talk) 04:22, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Some parameters exist![edit]

Hello.
I saw some of your edits, checked one(diff) and checked the documentation for the template {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and found out that one of the parameters you are removing "blp=no" exists!
The documentations says the following, among other things: "[..] Set to |blp=no for dead persons. This parameter must be added for biographical articles.".

I didn't know that, thanks! I'll try to keep an eye out for that - OpalYosutebito (talk) 04:17, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You might consider removing all unsupported parameters instead of one or two at a time[edit]

Re this edit, some unsupported parameters were left behind, so another edit to the article was needed. I have fixed the unsupported parameter check in the relevant infobox template, which may help you. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:13, 22 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
