Thanks to YOU if you are the one who created the template france-geo-stub! Anyway, my addition of the too many French geo stubs was part of my attempt to clean up the huge list of Calvados stubs. C'était moi - and I'm glad it's been of use! There are many more French geographical articles that are simpy listed as geo-stubs - some of them on pretty famous places that deserve bigger articles (Verdun?? Versailles???). I'm sure that you're right, but I thought that I'd double check to make absolutely sure. The original article referred to 'F. Fouquet'; after some research I found that Nicolas' father was François. It seemed more likely to have been Nicolas who was being referred to — on the other hand, the orinal author must have had some reason for giving the initial F. Honestly, I don't know. Since the castle was acquired and upgraded by Nicolas, it just made sense to me that the article should refer to him rather than to a François (I didn't know, by the way, that it was his father's first name). List of Hong Kong-related topics

Hello Olivier. I've recently created list of Macao-related topics, and I understand it's not easy to maintain a list. I would like to know your opinion on how the Hong Kong list should be going. Should it include any article with some reference to Hong Kong? The main question is: what do you want this list for? As a matter of fact, most country-related lists tend to grow so much that it eventually does not really make sense to maintain them (see List of China-related topics for such an example). The List of Hong Kong-related topics is still fairly manageable and is useful in tracking HK-related changes. Therefore, I no not see any real need to include any article with some reference to HK, but rather articles directly related to HK. If what you want to create is a page where HK-related articles are easily retrievable, you may consider creating a portal. olivier 12:47, Apr 8, 2005 (UTC)

Nü Shu

Hi Olivier,

I see you've contributed a lot to the Nü Shu article. Would you happen to know what the script is called in Yao, and how that name is written in Nü Shu? I'm designing a replacement for the map in the Writing systems article (see talk), and would like to include Nü Shu. Instead of "Wikipedia", the sample text will be the name of the script in the main language that uses it. I'm afraid I may have to use a random string of glyphs for some, but I'm hoping to avoid that as much as possible.

Qing Dynasty

Be bold in updating pages. Your statement is not exactly correct:

I did not remove the attribution for all: I did not remove it for Puyi and Yongzheng Emperor (I was in fact going to do so)

The attribution Category:Qing Dynasty is redundant, since each emperor is already in the category Category:Qing Dynasty emperors, which is itself a subcategory of Category:Qing Dynasty

In fact, no big harm was done by putting them in that category. It was just redundant, I believe. Since the emperors are already in a subcategory of Category:Qing Dynasty, then having them also in the category is a duplicate, and tends to overpopulate the top category, thus reducing the benefit of having these categories. olivier 07:59, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

Le Puy, Doubs

Hi, I notice you've done some cleanup - thanks. Two things maybe worth discussing:

• Deletion of (doesn’t appear to have any information) from Quid. What I was trying to say there is that Quid is a site that normally should be visited for commune information but that in this case it's so small as not to be listed. So I'd prefer to either leave the comment in or delete the link totally. It'll just frustrate anyone following it.
• Change of template. I deliberately made changes when I copied this from fr.wiki on the basis that boxed titles should be in English (even if the French is more accurate). Similarly I've been creating page titles without accented characters and creating a redirect from the correct French name. What are your thoughts on this?

OK I am replying here, but I would rather move the discussion to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject French communes, so that all project participants could, well, participate.

• Quid: I agree with you. The information available for free usually does not add anything to the suggested infobox. In some cases, though, it might include some historical information. Maybe the bot should leave the link, and this link could be removed manually for those articles which do not contain additional info.
• Other links: the list of links at the bottom of the article pages is really long. Is there any way to reduce it, maybe less maps?
• département vs. departement: there have been quite a few discussions about this type of topics in many places in Wikipedia, including in the WikiProject French départements. There seem to be some consensus around keeping the original word, and I definitely agree with that. If you look around, you will find something like 99% occurences of "département" and 1% of "departement". olivier 15:07, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

Maybe you should read more news before you'd like to correct me. I do not see anything about foreigners' ignorance on the article you are mentioning. Your point could have been made more NPOV by saying something like "people unfamiliar with the Cantonese language may believe that it means 'Happy Chinese New Year', but it is not the case". The statement as it was written was implying that the foreigners' ignorance is a fact, while I believe that it is largely debatable (maybe that's true in DB and on the forums you are mentioning though...). In any case, I do not see the point of such a negative statement, and the mere usage of "gweilo" is derogative. Why don't you go to every article about HK culture and places in Wikipedia and add a comment like "that's a typical HK thing, and most gweilos have no idea or understanding of it", would be cool, huh. On the same note, why not write in the "Christmas" article something like: "Christmas is called Julen in the Danish language, but when they hear that, most Hongkongers believe that it is something related to the month of July"? olivier 13:11, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

Well, I can't see the statement offensive. Sometimes misconception may not be ignorance, but confusions of certain people towards different languages, cultures, etc. (So there are more disgraces when we said the Church used to believe that the Sun goes arouf the Earth, or people once believed that there're real lead in pencils.) The example you've mentioned is just the same case (In fact you can add that as well, thought I deeply believe that not much native Chinese in Hong Kong know Danish). In fact the statement you've deleted does not refer to all foreigners, but some of them. Also the gweilo in brackets has implied NO derogatory meaning, which merely shows the situation the way they're commonly denoted by the locals. Nancy

I saw that you moved the pics in the Nancy article. The problem is that some large spaces now appear in the article with Internet Explorer. That's the reason why I had collected most of the pictures below the table, so that they are arranged automatically on the right hand side, without these spaces. I used Firefox for a while and noticed quite a few "problems" with viewing pictured in Wikipedia. My suggestion would be: if the prior version was OK with Firefox, then let us revert to this prior version, since it appears better in IE, and yes, most people use IE. Do you think the article should better be moved to Hong Kong Government? The latter is the much more common conventional short form. Paris Page

Olivier,

I see that you are one of the Paris page's original contributors, and would like to ask your opinion and perhaps help in situation that has blown all out of proportion.

I'll try to make this short: I've been trying to improve the Paris page since four months now, but am in a "stall/revert" deadlock with Hardouin. I had been advised to wait for consensus which I did, in the meantime working on the edits I thought would be useful. After a few months of unanswered talk meassages (REAMS of them) I finally announced that I was going to make the first changes, only to be "warned" that my changes would be "massively reverted" by "other users". Sure enough, my changes were reverted, but by Hardouin himself, and it has been the same way ever since. Only a few weeks ago I thought to look at the Paris page's history, and found that in fact Hardouin is the authour of over half the page.

I understand that the Paris page in its original version had a "tourist nostalgia" theme unsuitable to a modern city, but its present version is an equally-untrue yet vague "thriving unbroken metropolis" theme inaccessible to the average reader for its lack of explanation (numbers cited, regions, etc). This is only my second misgiving, because what first motivated me into wanting to edit the page was its haphazard order and cut-and-paste writing style. I have nothing at all against a modern theme (and in fact am quite for it) but the information there must in some way be sorted, explained and cited in a way comprehensible to the uninformed "greater user". Remember that this is English wiki.

As it stands Hardouin not only refuses all discussion about change, the only "improvements" he has undertaken is to add even more inaccessable statistics to an already full page architecture in leaving his "original" and contested texts unaltered and unreferenced; what's more, should anyone dare to make changes, he reverts, and that without even accomodating the reasons changes were made in the first place - always the answer is a smokescreen of vague details that themselves (IMHO purposely) miss the point completely. For myself all of the above tactics together are paramount to "squatting" the page, and as far as I see, without any outside opinion or consensus in this matter, this behaviour will continue undaunted and the page will remain unchanged - or worse.

Over the past months I have become mired in the "what will be reverted and what not" details of the changes I propose, but I would like this rather silly situation to stop so that we can get back to worrying about what is most important in the Paris page - or any Wiki page for that matter - its content and quality.

Olivier, I see you have added comments on the Paris discussion page, which is a good thing since I was getting really tired with this dialogue de sourd with Josefu (aka ThePromenador). Could you specifically express your opinion about the introduction? Josefu has rewritten the introduction entirely, because he thinks the introduction as it stands now is so totally flawed that it can't be amended, it needs to be entirely deleted and replaced with an introduction of his own. Could you read the introduction as it stood until now and the introduction that Josefu wrote instead, and let people know what you think? Personally, I think a Wikipedia user should not single-handedly replace entirely the introduction of one of the most read articles on Wikipedia. I have already told him that if he thinks there are wrong statements or wrong figures in the introduction, he should delete them (with sources backing his deletion), and if he things there is any info that is missing in the introduction, he should add it. But to simply change the introduction entirely, I think it's a bit far fetched. Besides, I find many of the sentences he wrote quite awkward (I'm talking of style), but then that's just my own opinion. What do you think? Hardouin 15:24, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

Paris Page II

(unrelated to the discussion above) I note that you removed the text "Paris is one of the global cities" and reverted it back to "Along with New York, London and Tokyo, it is often listed as one of the four major global cities." The thing is, "global city" is a well-defined term (see the article), and there are just the four "major" ones. So it might be ok to leave out the hedging. "Global city" is well defined in the context of the related article. On the other hand, many people have their own definition of what a "global city" may be and the statement "Paris is one of the [four] global cities" may seem to lack supporting evidence for the many people who won't bother clicking on the global city link. Another way to phrase it would be "Paris is one of the [four] global cities according to the GaWC Inventory", but that sounds quite specific and therefore the phrasing "it is often listed as one of the" is true and will sound more exceptable to most readers, I believe.olivier 15:31, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

If you have any suggestions for changes to the program that generates them, please let me know - they might be easier to do programatically rather than having to cleanup manually. EB 1911

Hi Olivier, I see that you work with articles on French geography. Do you happen to know that the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica, available online, contains tons of material on French cities, particularly on their history and sights. It is copyfree, so you may want to use it to improve France-related articles. Today, I adapted some stuff to expand the articles on Evreux and Vauban, but my main sphere of interests lies elsewhere. Thanks. Yes I know that EB 1911 has a lot of yet untapped info about French towns, although quite a bit of this may be outdated, for instance regarding the economics. In any case, it could be interesting to set up a list of French towns articles available in EB 1911 and have a status page about the porting of the content into Wikipedia.
