From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello, I saw that you are a portal peer review volunteer. I have worked much for the improvement of my portal, but some concerns may remain:

  • Is the image at the top of the page useful and aesthetic, or should I remove or replace it ?
  • Problem with the selected biography: I contented myself with writing a short sentence as an introduction for each personality. Then I wrote the beginning of the biography, then put a link "more..." to the complete article. Is it approriate ?
  • Selected images are not of the same size. Is it really a problem ? It should be noted that free images for comics are very rare.
  • Is the presentation of the news correct ? I did not specified the exact date of each event, only the month, because I do not know it.
  • If you have any other recommendations about other aspects of the portal, do not hesitate ! It MUST become a featured portal ! Thanks.--Pah777 (talk) 22:01, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Reply

In response to your comment, I had a quick reply, so I really didn't create a detailed report. What I meant was he was helping the backlog, just a mistake on my part saying he created it. I also forgot to mention Badminton was nominated when it was already a GA. None of these articles meet criteria for a GA. (I honesty didn't know you could just nominate, I'll have to give you that) Should I quickfail these articles then?--LAAFansign review 13:55, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

No mention of portals? Cirt (talk) 22:38, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. Even if no portals are promoted during that time period, doesn't The Signpost usually still make mention of something like "No portals were promoted." or something like that? Cirt (talk) 12:20, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Might I suggest that a format along these lines be used in the signpost, per the Featured pictures precedent? Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 02:19, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

With regards to sets, it should be possible. We could do something like (I'll just use the files above)

Multi-part work

Movement I
Movement II
Movement III
Movement IV

Or, if you rather, I could make something compact, such as (done quickly, we can probably tweak this.)

Or rather a number of variations on that theme. I'll ave to figure out how to add the dot before it, but that should be trivial. =)Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 15:20, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Soldier Front.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Soldier Front.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:14, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Procedure

Hi, That imposter user was blocked as a long term vandal anyway, once again. But I guess I do not know what the proper procedure is. I should learn it because that fellow has been back a few times with a few new IDs and some of his IDs are not even well known. I think he is probably also EurovisionMan, who was also blocked, but it will take more work to prove it. One thing seems certain: he will be back and I should learn how to report it. Portal:Schools

I really wanted to wait for the approval of User:RichardF at Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates, but it's been a month since I completed the anniversary and biography sections at Portal:Schools and about three weeks since he responded at User_talk:RichardF#re_Portal:Schools. Is there any chance you could take a look at the portal and add comments, pass, or fail it accordingly? Hopefully, when RichardF does come back I can get additional approval or further comments on improvement. Many thanks, --Jh12 (talk) 13:44, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes, the trouble has been quality. Every biography and school rated GA or higher has been added to the portal. Under limited circumstances, I consider adding a biography if the educator is of high importance or with sourced, close ties to a particular primary/secondary school, but I am unwilling to add other educators unless they fit those criteria. --Jh12 (talk) 14:43, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
Can Portal:Schools be closed? It received the support of RichardF back on December 7. It only has 16 biographies, but again the problem is quality. 16 biographies matches or is greater than Portal:Theatre, Portal:Russia, Portal:Japan, Portal:World War II, and many other featured portals. I have done my best to put the best content available on Wikipedia and represent it on the portal. I have asked other portal directors to make a decision on the portal: User:Caulde said a decision would be made and then resigned his position, User:Giggy said he didn't have time and left Wikipedia, my message at Wikipedia talk:Featured portal candidates received no response and was archived. A similar response was given by some of the last remaining active users under Template:PortalReviewVolunteers/List. It has been over 18 weeks since the portal was first nominated for featured status. If it's not good enough, I have no problem with a FPOC fail. Please consider at least making some kind of decision at Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates/Portal:Schools. Best wishes and happy holidays, --Jh12 (talk) 06:40, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Main Page redesign

Hi OhanaUnited, thanks for your comment on my proposal. If you've got a moment it would be great to know what improvements you'd like to see to the sister projects footer. I've been reluctant to change it because it's a fairly standard feature used across wikis. Thanks again, PretzelsTalk! 19:52, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

  • OK, that's fair enough. I did make the text bigger and added a double border to make it more prominent but I understand your concern. I'm sorry that's enough to make you want to oppose. Best wishes, PretzelsTalk! 20:14, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Translation help, perchance?

I left this message over at Editor Assistance Requests, but someone made the very good point that I'd be better off looking for someone who already does translations. Thus:

Traditional Chinese medicine. I have commented out an entire section in the middle of the article because--well, here's an example. The entire section is full of stuff like this:

  • Luo Shibiao: In the early 1960s, Lysenkoism the function of Qi (1962).
  • Qin Bomo: In the late 50s was 'the material of Qi Lysenkoism'. in 1959? .
  • The Qi was unifies the field Lysenkoism

o Huang Kunyi et al: the human body that the Qi field hypothesis. o Lee Xiao et al: that the Qi's entropy flow assumption. o Wu Banghui: Qi, Lysenkoism the order parameter.

To the average English-speaking reader, that makes ZERO sense. What this article, and particularly this section, needs is someone who is fluent in English and in Chinese, who also has knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The whole article needs a proper going-over; as it stands, it's practically a candidate for speedy deletion for being incomprehensible, contextless nonsense. (No, I wouldn't actually try to have the article deleted--but in its current condition, it's useless.) Someone also mentioned the possibility that it's output from a translatorbot--now THAT I'd believe. Anyhow, I saw your name on the translator cat page, and since I recognize your name and not in a bad way, I thought I'd ask you first. Thanks! Gladys J Cortez 08:58, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Reporting possible sockpuppets

I'm trying to use the Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets page to report a case of possible sockpuppetry, but not having any success doing so (using the "Query" form"). Is the "Query" form not working? You are wholly mistaken. Hello

I posted the Sockpuppet suspicion on User:Phonelabel in re: Klaksonn. His behaviour is so predictable... I'm not sure if a checkuser might help? I'm not so good at the procedures stage, I'm mostly a vandalism reverter and an occasional author. I know he often uses proxies. The user has a long history with User:Enzuru and myself; he refers to us as "The ismaili vandal" and "the ismaili vandal's girlfriend" (needless to say, I don't even know Enzuru...) and he obsesses on Islam topics. the Ogress smash! 17:43, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

I do not see any version of the map on Commons. I will restore it. Hal Jespersen (talk) 23:40, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Interesting. A search for it on commons came up empty. Why did an image-removal bot go through and delete links to it from all the articles that referred to it? Hal Jespersen (talk) 23:58, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello Andrew. You've deleted the above image without replacing the references to it, leaving red links. What is the duplicate name of the image on Commons, so we could link to it instead? Thanks. --Kimse (talk) 01:39, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello again. Well, actually the names are different. Compare the above to Image:Azerbaijan people's government flag.svg - the letters are not capitalized. Similar case is with Image:Pickett's-Charge.png on Wikipedia and Image:Picketts-Charge.png on Commons (no apostrophe). Just delete the duplicate and direct all the links to the one on Commons. Hope that helps. --Kimse (talk) 05:49, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

[1] I have for a month avoided discussing or referring to this editor after he posted insulting comments to my talk page. Recently, he 1) disrupted a GA nomination of mine, 2) posted to my talk page with a "warning" after being told clearly he was not welcome on my talk page, and 3) acted in an authority capacity in the GA project, again in regard to the article in 1). At that time I questioned his competence to function without COI in the GA project. He has since edit warred to repeatedly add a personal attack on me under the guise of a "question" [2]. This editor is continuing to poison the atmosphere of Wikipedia and the GA process in particular. If this editor had actually left me alone and not disrupted articles I'm associated with, nor badmouthed me around Wikipedia, I would have had no reason to bother with him. But it's obvious this editor will not stop on his own. Please get this editor to stop, if necessary by blocking the editor for repeated personal attacks and edit warring. GA section

I've created two mock pages to see what it would look like. In the first I've created a separate section for a selected GA. In the second, which I prefer, I've simply included the GA in the DYKs.

The paradox here is that including the GA in the DYKs is actually less intrusive for the DYK project. In the first case I had to cut one of the DYK hooks to fit it within a reasonable height, since the extra GA header takes so much space. In the second case I didn't have to cut anything (there was a little extra space to go on in this particular update, though this may not always be the case).

I just wish it would be possible to have a reasonable discussion about this without everybody jumping in the trenches. In the long run I think DYK would actually benefit from this modest reform. Lampman (talk) 01:21, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

I don't know about "brave", there can't be any harm in trying to see what it would look like. It feels a bit futile though, unless the discussion can get more community-wide feedback, rather than being held hostage by special interest. Lampman (talk) 01:44, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
