Rollback on "Pondcrete"

Hi! I do accept your rollback of removing an image I deemed unrelated. But I'd like to understand why you think it's related. To me, it looks unrelated in this way: Pondcrete is a specific material used in one of the methods used to store radioactive waste on site. That did partially fail, and poses lots of related hazards, like in handling failed containers. There is a closely related method using "saltcrete", and I would see methods of storing and handling radioactive waste as related. Now, the picture shows fire damage somewhere inside a building of the huge Rocky Flats factory. Pondcrete is not used inside the building, but only in open fields on the large area related to the factory. Also, the hazards of the pondcrete blocks are not related to fire - that's the one thing they can easily protect from, because the failed blocks failed because they are to moist. To me, the picture is not more related than a random picture of a problem in the factory. (Now, it's not that important, of course, so don't waste too much Wikipedia time answering this!)

I notice with interest that you have put a Citation Needed tag on the statement on the T.Rex (band) article which says that Bolan's death effectively ended the band. That was input by User Woovee who has blanked off a section about later disputed "reunions" of T.Rex and also the death dates of various band members in an apparent POV drive relating to the idea that there can be no T.Rex without Marc Bolan. He/she/it/they seems hell bent on eradicating any mention of Mickey Finn's T-Rex from Wikipedia. Woovee is being extremely aggressive (borderline abusive) on the RfC - perhaps you could be the person to sort him/her/it/them out?

November 2019

Hi Netherzone

Woovee has been at work again lately on the T.Rex (band) article and [has blanked off a short section containing a summary of Steve Peregrin Took's post-Bolan career, noting that Finn was not a songwriter as well as comments by Tony Visconti about Finn's inferiority to Took as a vocalist]. Woovee claims that the section was "Off topic and cut the flow" I think the section was relevant and important as not only was Tyrannosarus Rex not the autocracy that T.Rex was - at least not in public - it serves well to highlight the difference between Took who had effectively artistically outgrown Tyrannosaurus Rex and Finn who was a yes-man creatively unthreatening to Bolan, and thus underlines the shifting dynamics of the band at this time.
I am deeply concerned about Woovee's edit as it seems to further confirm that Woovee has a fan-politics agenda (shutting down discussion of Took's post-Bolan career is a common practice among more monotheistic Bolan fans.) I would simply revert the edit but I am concerned that this will just end up in a revert war, so I am seeking your views on this edit so we can establish some consensus on what to do about this one. (In fact, to be honest, I would prefer it if you did the revert if you're okay with that.) 2.26.165.77 (talk) 19:34, 27 November 2019 (UTC)

I saw the edit you are deeply concerned about and to me it does not seem of great concern. It seems fine for you to go ahead and work on improving the section with reliable sources and not feel intimidated. It doesn't have to escalate to an edit war. The first part of the content removed is relevant to the article, however the comments by Visconti seem gossipy and not so relevant.Netherzone (talk) 19:10, 29 November 2019 (UTC)

It's worth pointing out that Woovee's claims in the debate on the talk page about how Marc was the whole of T.Rex and it was just him and some sidemen doesn't wash with the Tyrannosaurus Rex era because, as I pointed out, "Both lineups of Tyrannosaurus Rex were presented, at least to the hippy public, as a band with two individuals, constantly together for promotion." 2.24.71.253 (talk) 12:31, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
I understand what the problem is. No one person owns the article, altho some editors may feel or believe differently. There is no good reason to diminish the other bandmembers, or the tribute bands for that matter. I'd encourage you to continue to work on the article as you see fit, as long as additional edits are backed up with reliable source citations. No need to worry about edit warring as long as the 3R rule is not broken. It is a historical fact that T.Rex was a band, and not just Marc Bolan-plus-sidekicks masquerading as a band. On a related note, I removed the gossipy quote by Visconti on Mickey Finn. I think there should be something more in the section about Finn, but what was there was superficial and was sourced directly to Bolan's website, making it a primary source. As far as I know the journal has always been an Art & Language project with time to time invited contributors. Hi ThatMontrealIP, It's true that here in the states many institutions are shy about collecting activist work (unless the artist is very famous). It's too bad that is the case, and probably has to do with trustees and acquisition committees' personal politics. I'll keep looking to see if I can find some additional citations on Teruya, right now I'm leaning towards a keep, but haven't !voted. I agree that the level of interest in the article seems to substantiate this, as does the fact that they are an SPA for the article and lists where they added PK. Agreed. You might have missed this as it got deleted by that user (for a time), but the redirect seems to have come automatically from them building the draft on their user page and then moving the page. Desert Hot Springs (thermal mineral springs)

Hello. I am wondering if it might be better to retitle the article Desert Hot Springs (thermal mineral springs) to Desert Hot Springs geothermal resource area. My thought is to focus the article on the geologic features of the area and how the geology results in the hot springs, rather than just the springs themselves.

I am not interested in renaming the article to DHS geothermal resource area. I am working on a project on hot springs themselves, not on their use-value as resources nor as commercial properties. You are welcome to add information on the geology of the area to the existing article, or you might wish to create a new article focusing specifically on the geothermal energy resources in the SoCal Inland Empire area. @Netherzone:I think we are both thinking about the article in the same way. Maybe the use of the word "resource" was misleading. The link I sent you is a scientific PDF document about the hot springs and their geology. Not sure why it would be flagged as spam. Sometimes a PDF can contain viruses, but my detector said it is OK. A few other similar Wikipedia articles use the term "geothermal area". I like to avoid parenthetical phrases when possible, especially in titles, but I'll leave it to you to decide on the title though. I'll see what I can find to add to the information. If you copy the URL of the actual (online) PDF and send that, then I may be able to read it. The project I'm working on has to do with hot springs as natural phenomena. I've been helping to clean up the list of hot springs around the world, and several individual articles on hot springs that became magnets for spam, ads, and WP:PROMO - to hotels, motels, spas, resorts, "healing centers" - clearly a violation of WP:NOT. I've created a new list that just focuses on the US, and am creating new articles and articles from redlinks for those that are notable. I respect your opinion, and offer for help, but I'd really like to keep the title as Desert Hot Springs (thermal mineral springs). It does not seem to be problematic, and there are many articles with parenthetic content - it helps with dismbigulation. Although the term "Desert Hot Springs Geothermal Resource Area" is used in the article, I find other articles that refer to hot springs in general as "hydrothermal springs" or "hydrothermal zones". Thank you for working on temperature conversions, 72.234.220.38 on some of the hot springs articles. I will look at the code to understand how you do this, as I've been manually typing this data into hot springs articles when I have that information. Do you happen to know if there is a shortcut to convert GPS location coordinates, into the standard format for coordinates that are used in WP? Most welcome. The {{convert}} template is easy (at least for temperatures). For coordinates, there is a template that takes different types. You can see some documentation starting here. If you need to convert between the types: Decimal Degrees (DD), Degrees Decimal Minutes (DDM) & Degrees Minutes Seconds (DMS), check out these sites:
The last one allows you to go to a place on the map and it'll give you the numeric coordinates. Hope this helps?

However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. Replaceability is not just about whether a free image can be found, but whether a free image could be created even if one does no currently exist. And it doesn't matter if you personally are unable to make the free image. Somebody could go to the springs and make a freely licensed photo. -- Whpq (talk) 19:38, 7 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the information and suggestion. The hot springs have been closed since the start of the pandemic in March.[3] You can go ahead and delete the file, it's not that big of a deal to me if it's in the article or not. Curious Case No Doubt

@Celestina007: Hello, how are you doing, Celestina? Good to hear from you. It is peculiar because the rationale for the nomination itself was so very brief, and then they did not answer my question although they were pinged. I don't know this editor, so am not sure what their editing history and style of communication are like. I have two ways of thinking about the nom, 1) that the article creator was doing some serious inner searching about their activity here, and as a exercise in self-critique, decided that they created the article without doing deep research on the subject before-hand and decided after the fact that they did not think they met notability criteria. Or 2) there's something else going on, like the subject of the article is personally known to the editor and they had a falling out, or even that they may (don't want to accuse anyone of anything) be an undeclared paid editor who got disgrunted for some reason (didn't get paid, or who knows what?) Please do tell me your thoughts and opinion on the matter. 20:38, 8 August 2020 (UTC)
The latter is more plausible & was what immediately came to my head. My theory is that the article creator & their subject know each other & as you rightfully postulated they either had a falling out or had a deal of 50% payment upfront & the remaining 50% upon completion & someone didn’t keep to their promise/agreement. That is my theory though & might be completely wrong & just like you said I also don’t want to accuse anyone of anything especially since I have no evidence of anything. Question about COI

Hi Netherzone, I have a question about WP:COI. I am trying to apply the rules regarding this but perhaps you can clear up a misunderstading. My recent edits on the Siwanoy Country Club page is a good case in point. I noticed the Wikipedia artcile had very little information about the history of the club. I did some research and found out that the club was started back in the early 1900s and that it just so happened, that my wife's great grandfather was the first president. As I did more research, I was able to develop text on the history with appropriate citations. When you tried to remove the whole section, I was concerned that you were not allowing important historical information, which makes the article that much factual. I understand you are concerend about an editor having a COI. However, COI policy allows involved editors to make non-controversial factual corrections or small additions to the article. Please let me know the best way, in this case, to avoid WP:RVREASONS. Thanks for your time. Hello @Greghenderson2006: Your COI is interfering with your ability to maintain a WP:NPOV. I tagged the article because the content you added was related to your family connections, which by now you should understand is an editing pattern you should outgrow. I too did some research on the history of the club, and what I found to be the most significant historical fact from 1901 was not that Archibald Murray Campbell had a position there starting May, 1901, but rather a front page New York Times article from September, 1901, about two murders at the country club (and its follow up articles). The reason why I bring this event up, is to illustrate that you selectively included a minor historical detail (that Campbell had a position there), but neglected the major news story. Why is that? Given your editing history, my best guess is it is because your contribution highlighted your relative, not that you wanted to "make it more factual." Does that clarify the misunderstanding? I wanted to do both, add the "History" section with a few facts to improve the article as well as highlight that Campbell was the first president of the club, which I feel is noteworthy because it was published in several newspaper articles that he was an officier and founding memeber of the club. I think it is important to link people/places with articles, but now realize that adding the link/text must be important. Yes, I did glance at the murder article but avoided it because I wanted to highlight the positive aspects of the Club. Again, I will avoid linking articles with family connections unless it is a non-controversial factual correction or small addition to the article. @Greghenderson2006: I understand what you are saying. Please continue to work towards achieving balance in the articles you work on, and avoid writing about family members. You have a lot of good editing skills to contribute; there is a world of great subjects to add to the encyclopedia. Choose some subject areas that interest you (as you have done with the pilot boats and their captains) and develop those areas. I'm always astonished at some of the things I find on Wikipedia, for example List of artificial objects on Mars. Sometimes it's fun to click on the Random Article link (on the left hand sidebar) and start improving something totally random like an obscure species of insect, or a Welsh rugby player, or a Jamaican ska musician, or a style of architecture. @Netherzone: Yes, the fires are bad here in California. We have a home in Carmel, but Carmel Valley has it the worst! I live in the bay area and there are fires to the north and south of us. Breitenbush Hot Springs and the use of parenthetical qualifiers

I am wondering why you made Breitenbush Hot Springs (thermal mineral springs) when Breitenbush Hot Springs already exists. I'm also wondering about the use of the qualifier. Most geographic features use their GNIS name. We only use parenthetical qualifiers in order to disambiguate two articles with the same name. Valfontis (talk) 04:27, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

Hello @Valfontis: thank you for your message. The reason I made the Breitenbush Hot Springs (thermal mineral springs) article is because the Breitenbush Hot Springs is about the commercial establishment: a retreat and conference center, and to my mind is very promotional and reads like an advertisement for the center. It is lacking in citations. In that article, the section on the springs is about the opportunity for paying guests to soak in their hot tubs, not on the actual geological phenomenon itself. The article I created is about the latter; the geothermal hot springs system, made up of over thirty separate springs, and covers a large geographic area. I see what you mean. I think the current Breitenbush Hot Springs article should be moved to Breitenbush Hot Springs Retreat & Conference Center, and then your article could be moved to Breitenbush Hot Springs. Some folks might fail to make the distinction between the two, which is why I suggested a merge. There is also an article for Breitenbush, Oregon, which I felt should be distinct from the hot springs/resort business. (which lost some structures in the 2020 Oregon wildfires, BTW) I'm not super invested in merging but I do think "thermal mineral springs" is a really long qualifier so I would consider doing the page moves. The three articles taken together might overlap quite a bit so some clean up may be necessary. When I get a moment I'll run it by WikiProject Oregon. Valfontis (talk) 00:57, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Romomusicfan: I saw that, and also that a reference was removed for Took. Didn't we already have a conversation with them about this? The band had members other than Bolan, and the article should reflect what they did after leaving the band, otherwise the article is lopsided and gives undue weight to one member. It's not trivial information that was removed, it is important. You were right to restore the material to the article. I do want to mention that I agree with their removal of the content on The Bongo's cover of Mambo Sun, which was indeed trivial (and I think was added by a COI/POV editor), and therefore that edit by Woov was a constructive edit.
On another topic, but related to the article, what do you think of the new big line-up chart that was added? I find it useful but ugly. I've not checked the WP:MOS for alternative table designs, but the only thing I can think that would improve the appearance is to use a smaller font size, tho I don't know if that complies with MOS. Do you mean the one for albums that has been put in? I'm not sure why that is there to be honest.
However the bar chart is perfectly regular. I'd have to see if there is a MOS for those charts, but that does seem to be the standard layout at least for charts about bands. I think the two shades of green for lead/rhythm guitar have been swapped round or something.
I'm glad we agree that core band members' later careers were not trivial. The Blow Monkeys. The Soup Dragons and Chris Spedding were all succesful chart acts in the UK. Mick Farren and the Pink Fairies were crucial components of the same UK Underground scene that spawned Tyrannosaurus Rex. Shagrat and Steve Took's Horns, besides being Wikinotable, were important junction bands in the evolution of the Pink Fairies, Motorhead and Inner City Unit. So none of it is trivial stuff at all.
Actually Woovee is mis-citing WP:TRIVIA there. It's not about eliminating "trivia" - it was created in response to a fad among Wikipedia editors many years ago for creating a section of articles marked "Trivia Section" which would usually be a bullet-pointed list of random facts about the article subject such as these surviving examples. Rather than call for deleting such material much less eliminating any content any editor deems "trivial", WP:TRIVIA specifically calls for such information to be incorporated into relevant locations within the article where such can be found.<r>

Yes, totally in agreement about the importance of other band members. Re: the ugly chart/table, I did not mean the full-color bar graph, which is indeed standard and concise. It is the one that follows that's called "Album Line-up Timeline that I think is an example of bad design (ha, ha!). Hard to read the first Album title because it's so long and the words are stacked vertically, plus, it takes up a lot of space overall. I'll see if there is anything in the MOS to see if the font size used in tables can be modified size-wise. It's not a big deal, just a thought. Thanks for the back-story on Trivia, interesting. The descriptive refs seem to come, uncredited, from other places, making PAIPP a tertiary source masquerading as a secondary one. I've seen two cites so far from the LA Times, which, unsurprisingly, may be the actual source for many/most of them. Better to give the newspaper and its reporters their due. Ok, I'm going to jump on you a little here but not severely. Ritchie was great for supplying those links but they aren't new. The latest source he provided was from April of this year and they all could be found by doing a simple Google search of the company which I did before voting. I don't include links because we aren't two-year-old's. I don't expect to be treated like one and I don't treat others like one. I believe you are intelligent and capable as a human being and can search just like me and I assume before we ever discuss anything on an AfD that you have thoroughly researched the subject because I do. Hi @Magnolia677:, will do that in a bit later today or tomorrow. I'm finding a lot of material, including one book in which she is described on twelve pages. It takes a great deal of time to dig into the research on 19th C. indigenous women, since they are often not included in book indexes, or by their native names (sometimes there is more than one indigenous name, and sometimes a maiden name.) (Many libraries are closed or understaffed right now so the going is even slower than normal.) I'm wondering if it might make more sense for you to tag these articles for "clean up" or "more citations needed" rather than nominating for deletion. I very much appreciate the fact that you are trying to improve the encyclopedia and keep our standards high, however, it really does take time to comb through books page by page. How would you think about pinging me next time you feel that an article like this one needs improvement, and we can work on it together before definitively deciding the subject is not worthy of an article? @Magnolia677: Thank you for consolidating the citations in the article. The book I ordered has arrived (Encyclopedia of North American Indians by Frederick E. Hoxie, editor). It has a long entry on Kamiakin (pgs. 312-313), but only mentions Colestah briefly (and not by name) - it describes her as "his wife" and a "warrior woman", and describes the tree branch incident and her rescue. So while this is a source that corroborates her actions and status, it does not add any new information. The entry itself was written by Clifford E. Trafzer (Wyandot), University of Riverside (California). The footnotes include books by Trafzer & Scheuerman; Shuster, and Splawn. I'll try to do some more research before the closure of the AfD to see if anything turns up. I will have a look at the other articles you mention above to see if they can be improved. @Magnolia677: I've done some work on Moving Robe Woman, and she's definitely notable, there is a lot of information out there on her. I have also started to do some research on Saracen, and I think that there may be errors in his background. There are differing accounts of his parents, and altho I'm just beginning to scratch the surface, I strongly feel that it was his father who was French and his mother Quapaw, not the other way around. The reasons are many-fold, firstly there was a great deal of mixing between French men and Native women in the US and Canada, entire books have been written about this (I have a few in my library, which I haven't checked yet for Saracen); also, NA lineages run on matriarchal not on patriarchal lines as they do in Anglo culture, so if he was raised as a Quapaw, it's most likely, to my mind, that his mother was native, not his father. Saracen (Quapaw chief)

Thank you again for your hard work. I'm wondering if the line that he "did not fare nearly so well among many of the Quapaws" may be misinterpreted, as it sounds as if the Quapaw's didn't like him, which is something I didn't get the sense of in any of the literature. Also, the present-day Quapaw People named their new casino after him. I think the writer's intent was that Saracen's popularity among the whites did little to help the Quapaws, but the quote makes it seem that the Quapaws didn't like him. What do you think? Also, I saw link on QAI talk to the backlog of articles needing infoboxes, and thought I'd start to tackle Category:Women artists articles needing infoboxes which should be interesting. Do whatever pleases you! You may have noticed how many of us have been banned, blocked, and restricted, and temporarily over infoboxes, so tread carefully in the field, and if reverted, just go to the next, - it's a mine field and not worth to loose time over in discussions.
