TS Nom is up[edit]

The nom is up at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Tourette syndrome; now we've got to watch it as well as Treatment of Tourette syndrome, Sociological and cultural aspects of Tourette syndrome, coprolalia, palilalia, echolalia and just about everything in the TS template :-) Hopefully it won't be as bad as I fear! Protests links on 2008 RNC page[edit]

Since you were very helpful before, can you tell me if I'm correct in my deletions from the 2008 RNC page? There's some discussion in the talk page about it. Thanks! ~ Shawn 17:18, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for fixing that part, but you didn't finish it. There are two my talk pages. You have to fix both of them. The one that you fixed only matters when you do not tell which talk page it should be on. The one that you didn't is what shows when you do fill in the field for talk page...

it is...

{{#if:{{{1|}}}|[[user talk:{{{1}}}|my Talk page]]|my talk page}}

it needs to be...

{{#if:{{{1|}}}|[[user talk:{{{1}}}|my talk page]]|my talk page}}

I'm sorry if this sounds picky but it gets placed on many pages and doesn't look right. Thank you in advance. Cbrown1023 23:46, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MinnesotaLindy and SwingMonkey deletions[edit]

Both of these sites were listed as stubs and both of them refer to websites that support real-live communities. These communities co-exist both on and offline. You "speed deleted" them and this seems like a breech of ethics. Both of these sites were *stubs* and had not yet been fleshed out to document the scenes which they support. They were just blown away without due course of discussion as to their relevance, notability, and whatever other wikipedia buzzword you need satisfied to declare a niche piece of the world worthy to place on the great wikipedia. They weren't done yet, of course they hadn't yet asserted their importance or significance -- that's why they were both *stubs*. Yes, both pages made Wikipedia a better place. Are you really the right person to judge that these qualify as "speedy deletions"?

stubs and quick deletes[edit]

Hi , On friday I started a stub on the wollesack company as I noticed that it was a red link in at least two places, and included an external link to where someone could re-right more information on the firm. They were a major maker of Lenes and stuff, and also the foundation of 3m Tape recorder business. I have found that starting a stub is a great way of encouraging folks to "be Bold"

I did not think that Speedy delete applied to an atricle that was listed in an article by someone else. I did not have a chance to write a long article while also cross cheking sources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cmacd123 (talkcontribs)

Gipsy Hill - Edits reverted[edit]

Why have you reverted the Gipsy Hill article to a User:Regan123 version? Alec - U.K. 16:07, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your reply seens to contain what I would call nonsence but I expect that is because english is not your mother tongue. However, I do understand that is accuses me of removing links from the Gipsy Hill article. I disagree. As far as I know, I have not removed any links from the Gipsy Hill article. Why did you think I had? Alec - U.K. 16:21, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think you have reinstated or reversed a revert that I have made to in the Gipsy Hill article. It was a revert of edits made by Regan123. Alec - U.K. 16:55, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

November Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.
Signed...
Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Bibó István proclamation dispute[edit]

Hello NCurse, Could you please resolve a dispute on the Bibó István proclamation text page For Freedom and Truth. You can check the history to see that another user has tried to pull it down, first with a tag that claimed it was "not appropriate for wikisource" (and removing the article) and after my reversion, claiming that it is copyvio, requiring an admin's resolution. The user makes no explanation on the talk page. I can explain (and I will) that the text is Columbia Press' translation (hence valid and verifiable) of an open proclamation (nobody holds its copyright) addressed to the public. I suppose one must know a bit of history (perhaps the user should be invited to read the 56 article) to know how it all fits together but could you please browse by for a moment - I dont want to start a disruptive spat, and I think this is a quick resolve. Thanks in advance Istvan 15:45, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The original may be in the public domain, but that is no reason why Columbia Press' translation is not. Derivities of works in the public domain (like translations) can be copyrighted. --Benn Newman 16:34, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, here are a couple of other sources for the same text -
(1) Irodalmi Újság, Paris Nov-Dec 1979 (in Hungarian)
(2) New York Herald Tribune, November 12, 1956 pp 1 and 10. (in English)
who holds copyright? Mr. Bibó, Columbia Press, the French/Hungarian newspaper, the Herald Tribune, the Hungarian Government? If the text were now translated anew from the original (the original signed facimile appeared in ref (1) would that not then preserve public domain? (I would gladly do it) Istvan 17:12, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That works if you put it in the public domain and the original is in the public domain to begin with. Being published by the mass media does not automatically mean it is public domain. It should be added to Wikisource, not Wikipedia, though. --Benn Newman 18:52, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, perhaps we have a way forward now. NCurse, your thoughts? I am happy to xlate it from the original facsimile, to list three sources for it, and to put it into Wikipedia (someone in Wikisource is free to put it there too). I strongly believe it is worthy of Wikipedia because the text is also a very important distillation of an historical event, and the story behind it also counts as such. NCurse, your thoughts? 56 needs help again[edit]

in the last few days we've had a lot of vandalism on the 56 article by IP users. Would a partial protection of that article (blocking IP accounts) be advisable? It's a real pain to have to clean up all that garbage, especially since we managed to write such a good article. Anything you can do? Is it even advisable?K. Hi,

I haven't studied much this semester and as a consequence, I'm leaving Pedia until February. I hope you find time to keep the Portal up to featured standards: I've reverted two vandals in 2 days so a close eye is really needed. If you don't have the time yourself, I suggest you contact WP:MED, WP:CLINMED and WP:PCM to find another sidekick for you!

Good luck --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 18:12, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For Freedom and Truth, public domain?[edit]

It is automaticly. Translations of public domain works are automaticly in the public domain. It is grounded on the same workings as copyrighted material; the translation of a copyright material belongs to the copyright owner of the source text, no matter who the translator is. Thus, a translation of a public domain text is also in the public domain. --OrbitOne [Talk|Babel] 19:17, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, that argument is a fallacy. The copyright holder controls the right to make derivative works (e. g., translations). Someone who makes a derivative work of something that is in the public domain might be the new copyright holder. See Wikipedia:Public domain. Translations (more often then not, I believe) contain originality. --Benn Newman 00:35, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. Copyrights of translations of historic speeches have been through the courts time and again. Although you do have a point in regards to creative works translated, these are limited to commercial productions, such as books and plays. The translation of The speech in question, in all its forms, is in the public domain, because it is a historic event and copyrights to historic events are rejected by courts. If the speech were remade for dramatic portrayals, then it could be copyrighted. --OrbitOne [Talk|Babel] 11:27, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I will also further point out, copyright law allows for fair use. Wikipedia is an educational tool, not a for-profit company. --OrbitOne [Talk|Babel] 11:34, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it may allow fair use. But of the whole text? I'm not so sure of that. Wikipedia being an educational tool and [the Wikimedia Foundation being] a non-for-profit company has nothing to do with it. Wikimedia Foundation wikis do not allow the use of non-commercial use only licenses for text, in part because there are downstream commercial uses. --Benn Newman 21:54, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Except the translation is part of a larger work, a book. The whole text isn't the whole work of an author, but a page from his/her book.
You are also incorrect when you say Wikipedias profit/non-profit situation doesn't play a role. Fair Use makes specific allowences for tools of education, such as Wikipedia. If you were to say Fair Use has nothing to do with it though, you might get somewhere, because you are heading into a dead end right now. Although there are downstream commercial uses, that doesn't mean Wikipedia is liable. I also have examples of pictures that are otherwise copyrighted featured on Wikipedia under Fair Use. The text is also credited to the correct book, which is required under Fair Use, which is a requirement that has been met. --OrbitOne [Talk|Babel] 20:15, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
