Line scoring in 1947 Rose Bowl article[edit]

The best place to start with an edict such as replacing Convert or PAT with kick is the Wikipedia:WikiProject College football/Style Guide. I see your point with the edits to the 1947 Rose Bowl article. However the original terminology was taken from the UCLA Football media guide. Cyrillic rendering of Russian names[edit]

I have noticed that you have deleted Cyrillic names from a few Soviet politicians. Having the names of foreign people in the native scripts is standard in Wiki. It is quite useful as the transliteration rules are quite tricky (check WP:RUS as an example). I have reverted your change. Please do not delete the info again unless you get some consensus on talk pages Alex Bakharev (talk) 04:31, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I want to reiterate the above point of Alex Bakharev. Please stop removing cyrillic spellings of the names of Soviet politicians, like you did here[1][2][3][4][5]. I have reverted your changes. There is a well established practice of including spellings of the names in their native alphabets in biographical Wikipedia articles. A few notes:

There is no CEO. It's a foundation.
There is no owner. It's a foundation.
With certain exceptions, the Board of Directors of the Foundation play no part in determining editorial content.
Look up "negligence". Learn what it means. Learn that the Foundation and its directors have absolutely no duty of care to readers, and that no loss is suffered by those readers due to whatever article we choose to display.
It was not a Featured Article, it was a Did You Know article.
Wikipedia is WP:NOTCENSORED.
We aim to be a compendium of all verifiable knowledge. This includes things you might find adolescent. We do not exclude knowledge because some people might find it "adolescent"; we aim to have a system whereby if somebody has something notable they want to look up, they can find it here.
Wikipedia does not cater to the "intellectually earnest", it caters to the public.
Did you read the article, or just the hook? It has no relation to pornography.

Names[edit]

Please do not remove original names from biographies (in their native languages). Maybe they don't show up in your browser, but this would be unusual and would be a local problem. Who are you, and no I will not, because it is substandard referencial and encyclopedic paractice. I own two Encyclopedia Brittanicas and I have read several other editions of both EB and other encyclodepias, and this useless convention appears nowhere.

I absolutely agree with this. If you continue to remove names written in other alphabets from articles, you will get blocked. Your opinion on this does not agree with consensus on Wikipedia: see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English), which notes that "The body of each article, preferably in its first paragraph, should list all common names by which its subject is widely known. When the native name is written in a non-Latin alphabet this representation should be included along with Latin alphabet transliteration." Fences&Windows 13:26, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

On a related point, I notice you removed the text "Автомат Калашникова Модернизированный [Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovanniy]" from AK-47. I doubt this is an improvement, as AKM is a Russian acronym - I think it would be a good idea to retain the original Russian text.

Wikipedia covers more than just the Anglosphere, and its readers are not just monoglot anglophones. If the subject of an article was named in a foreign language, it is often helpful and informative to show the original name as well as the English transliteration.

Looking through your past contributions, it seems that you also removed معركة القصر الكبير from Battle of Ksar El Kebir (and 麻 from Hemp). Are you on a crusade to remove the original names from wikipedia articles?

However, you've toned your language down; whereas before you might call other wikipedians holocaust deniers, now you merely try to remove the "goddam shitass useless stupid Russian language" from articles about Russian people and things; I suppose that's an improvement.

Just for the benefit of other folk who have expressed concerns about ncdane's behaviour - ncdane posted a response on my talkpage: [7]

There's no need to be so hostile. There really are many people reading wikipedia who can read other languages. If you're not one of them - if you are ignorant of a foreign language - then you are not harmed by the presence of a few letters which you cannot read but which other people might want to read; and you can hardly be surprised that when you choose to read an article about somebody or something foreign, a foreign version of the name is present.

Wikipedia is no place for language chauvinism. "I don't understand it, therefore it must go" is no way to build an encyclopaedia. Few people understand Telomerase reverse transcriptase or Semistable abelian variety, but we let that content stand, because it can benefit the people who do understand it.

It might be a good idea to read Wikipedia's policy on foreign names: "The native spelling of a name should generally be included in the first line of the article, with a transliteration if the Anglicization isn't identical". If this policy offends you, perhaps you should push for a policy change; but in the meantime articles about Russian people are better - and more accurate - with the original Russian name in them.

You've received repeated explanations as to why your continued removal of non-Latin characters from our articles is disruptive and contrary to consensus. It does not appear that any amount of discussion, nor multiple blocks, has dissuaded you from this course of action. This is not the time nor the place to argue your basic point as regards whether or not Wikipedia should use diacritics or non-Latin characters. If you wish to argue that in individual cases a Latinised name or title should be used, then the onus is on you to obtain consensus on this position on the article talk page before proceeding (assuming that there is disagreement), not to continually reinstate your preferred text while multiple other editors object.

Stop removing text written in scripts other than the latin script from articles such as you have done with Vladimir Vetrov, Seljuq dynasty, Irene of Athens and probably countless other articles that I haven't detected. As I have written before, if you have a problem with this, start a discussion on wikipedia policy instead of sneakily removing such script from articles. Font size[edit]

NCDane, the changes to font size that you made at Mike Krzyzewski and NCAA Men's Division I Final Four appearances by coaches are highly irregular and at odds with basic style practices on Wikipedia.
