IMDB links that look like Wikilinks[edit]

Hi MozartFan69. I noticed that you have recently started editing with this account and have immediately made major changes to the article List of composers depicted on film. That article is already a disaster area and you are making it worse! The problem is that IMDb is not considered a reliable source for Wikipedia and the way the article is written (not just by you) it contains dozens of external links to IMDb, in contravention of the guidance at WP:EL, especially WP:ELPOINTS, which say that With rare exceptions, external links should not be used in the body of an article. Worse still, your recent edits have made these external links look to readers as if they are internal wikilinks, because you have used, for example, the syntax [[imdbtitle:0100700|''The Strange Affliction of Anton Bruckner'']] which renders as The Strange Affliction of Anton Bruckner. We don't ever use that type of link, for reasons given at WT:WikiProject Film/Archive 79#Masking imdb links as wikilinks. See also WP:IMDBTEMPLATE. I would be interested to know where you got the idea that such links were valid for articles, since I and other editors spend a considerable time removing them!

If you want to salvage the list article, by all means do so. Otherwise I am likely to go back and revert all your changes to it. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:33, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
