Talk page archive of deleted page

Hi @Modussiccandi: you deleted an article per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2019–2021 Persian Gulf crisis but there exists a talk page archive for it at Talk:2019–2021 Persian Gulf crisis/Archive 1. I wonder if that should've also been deleted or maybe moved and archived somewhere else, because currently, it is completely orphaned, with little reasonable chance of being found. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 08:53, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

@CX Zoom: thank you for contacting me about this. This one was a messy deletion with a huge number of links and redirects. My first instinct would be for this to be deleted under G8, but I can see a scenario where editors might want to consult the contents of the page. On balance, I'd say it's in order to delete since their was a consensus that 2019–2021 Persian Gulf is not a topic to be suitably discussed in one article and I don't believe it will be coming back in this form. New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello Modussiccandi,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Early end of the backlog drive

A few days ago, new page patrollers got the backlog to zero. Due to the unprecedented success of the backlog drive, it will be ending early—at the end of 24 October, or in approximately two hours.

Barnstars will be awarded as soon as the coords can tally the results. Streak awards will be allocated based on the first three weeks of the drive, with the last three days being counted as part of week three.

WikiCup 2022 November newsletter

The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is

  • England Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
  • New York City Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
  • Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
  • Chicago PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
  • Toronto Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.

During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.

  • England Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
  • Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
  • Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.

  • A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. @Qpms: thank you for reaching out. The Ankur Verma page was protected because several attempts were made to publish a promotional article on the subject, which is against Wikipedia's purpose. I would have to take a look at any proposed article about Verma before I could consider lifting the protection. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Hey mate! Thank you for notifying me on these changes. Olesen and myself shared the same school (although we were in different years and of course, different sections). As for his language section, he did attemp the Danish linguistic section and graduated on the 29th of July 2019. Also, as he was not born in Luxembourg, naturalisation process are a little more complicated in comparison to those born in the country of foreign nationals parents. The process can only be started at 18. Although, it can be speeded up in cases like Olensen's.

@Gregori-luxair: thank you for getting back to me! I fully believe all of what you say. The problem is that we haven't got reliable sources about these details. Since we're dealing with the bio of a living person, we need to take extra care with verification. Instagram and Facebook, as you say, aren't suitable for usage on here. So as it stands, it's better to leave this information out unless we can find a rock-solid published source to back it up. Regardless: it's great to see someone care about Olesen's article. Draft Creation request

Hello, I've been instructed to contact you as the administrator who closed the discussion for Lelo Sejean, since I've requested the availability of a draft creation based on an extensive online background check I conducted on this footballer, encountering sources by the Australian Football Database and its monthly report of Australian footballers abroad. The page didn't meet NG requirements previously, it may now, it may or may not satisfy Football Notability and Notability of Footballers, but I've only researched as far as football based content and all valid credible and verifiable references which are completely related to football. Despite its previous deletions, could you AT LEAST have a look at my version based on the sources that I'll include? You will have seen that participants at the latest deletion discussion recognised that there was coverage available on him but felt that it did not reach the standard we're looking for. Hello, I've almost finished creating MY version of a draft on the subject. I'm not sure what your stance is on the subject, be it for-or-against, hoping MY version is nothing like the previous re-created and deleted ones. Trust me, after not being able to create the article myself it took diligent research to put this together and to just contemplate requesting a review for it, only because of the credible and convincing sources I found.
After reviewing the latest deletion discussion of the subject that you suggested, I can unfortunately say that some comments in favor of deleting it seemed like personal disputes against the subject, which is why I'd like to reiterate that there MAY be personal disputes or indifferences between editors who are connected directly to the subject and may dislike him, BUT credible and verifiable references link him with having played in Paraguay. I understand the rationale but I don't see how things are improved by unjustly deleting the subject's name from the pages of all the Paraguayan clubs he played for when factual information is documented on the Australian Football Database that he HAS played for these clubs in Paraguay. As you'll appreciate, I've not included anything at all relating to the subject's personal life, something that was discussed in the deletion discussion. Just give MY version ago if it's about a fair review.
This article could be deleted on a technicality, for instance: no full international caps = not notable according to WP:ATHLETE. But realistically, this is EXTENSIVELY PREPARED and a SIMPLY WRITTEN and REFERENCED STUB about a footballer who just happened to have not yet reached Wiki's standards. Anyone else who played one game in Australia's top division is of lesser importance or notability than the Australians playing Abroad list. Annually, their coverage lasts longer, and the Australian top division only runs for six months.
As far as my research went, it was the best I could do, but:
  • English Language coverage from 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 is Here and Here
  • Spanish Language coverage from 2021 and 2022 is Here and Here
The articles cited are specifically about the subject and cover a span of six years (2017 to 2022), thus more than mere news or WP:ONEEVENT and the subject hasn't played for a national team. Australia's SBS ran an interview on him and ABC Color wrote a piece on him, and as far as I researched ABC Color is major Paraguayan newspaper and it's one of the most widely read daily newspapers in Paraguay. To be in the largest newspaper in Paraguay SHOULD contribute enough to meet the significant coverage criteria, further solidifing his notability.
  • He's profiled in the Australian Football Database Here (it only lists 2013 as his only Paraguayan club, this part needs to be updated, so do other Player Profiles on the DataBase)
  • As an Australian playing abroad, he had coverage during 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, until it was discontinued Here so someone from the AFDB team was obviously following his career for it to be of any significant importance.
  • He was in a circle of young Australian footballers from a generation that looked elsewhere for national youth team opportunities, which was a debated discussion in forums years ago, for apparently choosing Lebanon like Andreas Govas, Dean Bouzanis and Paul Giannou picked Greece and Aleks Vrteski and Daniel Georgievski picked Macedonia Here
  • I've found interviews on YouTube with Paraguayan television channels Here, Here, Here, and Here and I didn't even include these in my Draft but they are available content on YouTube about the subject.
  • His name is also listed on the Paraguayan Athletics Federation's official page over successive years as an athlete in competitions between 2015 to 2022.
He has received significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject and SHOULD pass
WP:BIO#Basic criteria, through having many reliable independent sources. I didn't mind creating the draft, at least give MY VERSION a read since it's been creating from a neutral perspective and by the stance of:
  • The subject has multiple articles written about him in two languages that override any notability issues, over the course of six years.
  • The subject MAY NOT have previously met Football Notability but has plenty of news articles about him specifically and in two languages over the course of six years, passing General Notability Guidelines.
  • His career is notable for an Australian player
IMPORTANT: In MY version there isn't any factual information relating to the subject's personal life which was the center of dispute in the latest deletion discussion of the subject's page. Hope you appreciate this fact.
I understand that the main criteria at WP:BIO is "A person is presumed to be notable if he or she has been the subject of published secondary source material which is reliable, intellectually independent, and independent of the subject". Regardless of any national team games played or not, if someone's writing about a subject specifically in a newspaper then it SHOULD demonstrate a certain notability, thus the GNG. Many other unimportant things pass these requirements. In the sources supplied, he certainly gets more than a trivial mention.
At the end of the day, notability is about being "worthy of note", and it is only in special cases that a non-national team football or non-professional footballer is likely to be worthy of note. So it's up to you to decide and I'd hope that you enjoy the draft I prepared.
I'm about to create a draft for another two-time deleted page about Dimitri Hatzimouratis, If you're interested in approving it for me then I'd be keen on showing you what I've prepared.

@Ze-wee-mon: there's a lot of information to process here. The bedrock of notability, as you recognised, is WP:GNG: the subject needs significant coverage in multiple reliable sources independent of the subject. The details of his sporting exploits are irrelevant so long as these criteria are met. I have now gone through the sources you provided. My problem is that all of this coverage is of the same nature: a trivial piece of information about Sejean filled with quotations by him. That sort of coverage is neither substantial nor independent. On these reasons, I don't see any of the English-language sources you point as contribution anything to his notability. The Spanish-language pieces are better, but I'm not convinced that either of them exceed the level of a basic news reports, which don't contribute to notability either. Since he hasn't played at a high level, we are looking for proper, in depth-coverage in high-quality sources. Listings in databases and interviews are no good either: the former are not significant, the latter are not independent. After reading through what you provide, me hunch is that the community correctly concluded that Sejean should not be the subject of a Wikipedia article. His problem, in short, is that he is no more than a regular lower league footballer (see WP:MILL) who happens to have attracted a lot of coverage, most of which does not reach the required standard. In summary, I don't think the situation has changed much since that last deletion discussion. I would recommend the following: submit your draft (admittedly much better than what we had before) for review. If another reviewer with awareness of the past discussions approves of it, you will have a much better shot at convincing me that the creation protection of Lelo Sejean should be lifted. I know this process might take some time, but you will need the judgement of more than just one experienced Wikipedian to overturn established consensus. @Ze-wee-mon: I have taken a look at your draft on Hatzimouratis. Here's my assessment: judging from the sources your draft presents, the player is quite some way removed from being suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia. Remember, we are looking for significant coverage (several developed prose paragraphs) in high-quality sources that are not connected with the subject. None of the sources used in the draft contribute towards this standard. The sources from ozfootball.net are simply statistics. The article from The Corner Flag mentions Hatzimouratis in passing. The soccerway profile, again, is just a statistics compilation. In summary, I would decline the submission of this draft as would, I'm sure, every other AfC reviewer. The only thing that could improve this draft's chances is adding sources that discuss the player's life/career in more depth than just statistics or mentions in passing.
