OTRS search question[edit]

Hi Mfield, I've got an OTRS ticket where the user asks why a page he wrote Pickupp is not found in a Google search. He sent back a reply that Google told him that the "page is set to no index, no follow". He wonders how to change that but I have never heard of such a page restriction. Can you enlighten me? I can't find anything on the topic. The editor also appears to have a WP:COI and I personally doubt the page really passes WP:N. ww2censor (talk) 17:26, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to me that it's unlikely a page only created 4 days ago would reliably appear on Google yet anyway, I am sure they have specific robots to index WP, I don't know what the frequency is, but i think it's likely given our user edit-ability that they would look for stability of new pages before including them in results to avoid people creating articles just for the purpose of getting to the top of Google results. Mfield (Oi!) 17:30, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'm aware Google crawls every so often and as I understand, but don't have specifics, it can be up to a week or so before it does a recrawl. However I wonder why they told him the page was restricted here, so you don't know of any such page restriction as "no index, no follow". ww2censor (talk) 22:48, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There is indeed a noindex, nofollow robots tag on that page, I am not familiar with the intricacies of how those tags are applied by the Wiki backend to pages, but I would strongly suspect that they are automatically added to new pages until they become stable to prevent people from gaming Google with new, un peer-reviewed content. You have me intrigued though so I am going to look around and find out more about that. Mfield (Oi!) 22:52, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed now that I bothered look at the page source I see the two tags. If you find out anything I'll be intrigued to hear. ww2censor (talk) 23:36, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I discussed this further at WP:AN#Article source code where the issue has been explained more by others. Thanks ww2censor (talk) 12:25, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any chance I could convince you to hard block the above editor for promo only/NOTHERE? He's been here nearly 3 years and edits only rarely, but every single edit he's made has been to add promo content about either himself or his organization to Lansing, Michigan. A further illustration of NOTHERE can be seen just above the block notice on his talk. I actually meant to click on AIV, not UAA. Pretty sure I'm only asking for the results I would have gotten if I hadn't ham fisted it. Thanks. John from Idegon (talk) 04:49, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fair point, having checked the contributions, I concur. Reblocked as spamuname. Mfield (Oi!) 04:54, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I believe tangotiger is a single person who uses this handle on a number of different platforms (eg, [1]). Tangotiger.com is their personal blog. Please reconsider this block. -- Scott Burley (talk) 05:47, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If it's purely personal then the editor certainly shouldn't be adding cites from their own blog to articles. See [2]. It's not just a personal blog once they start adding cites from it, that's a huge promo/COI flag. Mfield (Oi!) 05:52, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

User talk:Arigorn12[edit]

So you blocked User talk:Arigorn12 the other day and they literally returned from their block and made the same unexplained content removal. No edit summary, no explanation still. I reported to AIV, but not sure if it will be identified as clear vandalism. StaticVapor message me! 20:23, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

And I think, based on his edits, this may be the same disruptive edits as WP:LTA/DRV. --IanDBeacon (talk) 20:30, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Billy Bob Thornton[edit]

Hi, I didn't remove anything from the Billy Bob Thornton article; in fact, I added a substantial amount of information to it. So I'm not really sure what you're talking about. 2607:FEA8:8400:1E9D:DDD2:4ED5:9835:755F (talk) 03:58, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest I am not sure what happened there either, please accept my apologies, i have reverted. Mfield (Oi!) 04:00, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity[edit]

Information icon Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.
