Question

Hi Melecie, I have seen many wiki pages starting with 'Wiki:'. I want to read all such pages, that have been written about Wikipedia. What is the best way to do so???Itcouldbepossible (talk) 09:01, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

hi Itcouldbepossible! what do you want to learn about? generally you'd want to read WP:Simplified ruleset and WP:Simplified Manual of Style. if you've already read those other major pages can be found here, and i could place this in your talk if you'd like for easy access.
 • do you have some questions? it may've been answered in the FAQ
 • want more to do? the task center outlines great tasks you can do to improve the encyclopedia.
 • need help? feel free to ask at the teahouse!
 • want to write an article for something? check out your first article!
 • want to learn how to work with wikicode? read the wikicode cheatsheet, then practice at the sandbox!
 • you may want to join a wikiproject to collaborate in a specific topic of you choice!
 • don't forget to sign your posts with ~~~~ to insert your username & date!

@Melecie: Hi Melecie, you helped me a lot, and thank you for your offer. You can obviously paste that in my talk page. But for the time being, would you please look into Wikipedia:Teahouse, and answer my questions there. Regards. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 09:46, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

J D A Widdowson

Hello, I am a close collaborator of John Widdowson and the information I added about his professorship at the University of Sheffield is not in doubt. I am in possession of his CV and that is the direct source of the information, but the University itself would provide verification of the addition. Thank you. 2A00:23C5:5987:1E00:9CFC:65FC:4523:2926 (talk) 12:40, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Hi @Melecie, i have one question… How do you make your signature have a font?? Example of font: New times roman. Thanks. —-Moon tw!tt (talk) 14:21, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

hi Moon twitter! usually you can add a font in by using Font, but having that in a signature would be rather messy as signatures automatically subst templates. you can instead use the <span> html tag, so something like <span style="font-family: Times New Roman">Moon tw!tt (talk)</span> would display as such in your signature: Moon tw!tt (talk). don't forget to toggle on the wiki markup checkbox! happy editing!  melecie  t - 07:27, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Melecie,

Thank you for volunteering as a Host at the Teahouse. Wikipedia is a community of people working together to make knowledge free. You are an important part of that effort! By joining as a Host, and by following our expectations, you are helping new users to get started here at Wikipedia, and aiding more experienced users who just have a question about how something works. We appreciate your willingness to help!

Here are some links you may find helpful as a Host:

ASKfm (ASK.fm)

Hello. I completely changed the structure of the English version of the article about ASKfm, because I noticed that the text is not logical. I moved some of the information from the History block to separate blocks (about Cyberbullying and Terrorism). I have added a lot of new information, but unfortunately, you are completely overriding my edits.

Please tell me what information is not confirmed from a reliable source? I will try to fix it. I will wait for an answer — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stia Pochotnaya (talkcontribs) 14:10, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi Stia Pochotnaya! the edits seem to be fine right now at least compared to earlier when they didn't have citations, although I've removed the official social media accounts section as they don't really fit in wikipedia as per WP:ELMIN: Wikipedia does not attempt to document or provide links to every part of the subject's web presence or provide readers with a handy list of all social networking sites. Complete directories lead to clutter and to placing undue emphasis on what the subject says. with the few recent reverts, I was intending to only remove that section, although I pressed the wrong button and removed everything instead, oops. thanks for reverting that, however! happy editing!  melecie  t - 14:20, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Features for new users coming soon (and mentors, like you, wanted!)

Hello. As you're currently listed as a host at the Teahouse, I wanted to make sure you're aware of the imminent rollout of new Growth Team Features which every new account will be getting by default. Each users will soon see a new 'Homepage' tab next to their User page. It contains two main elements which might impact on your involvement - and you'd be welcome to get involved and help out directly with one of them.

 • Firstly, they will be offered a range of 'suggested edits', and encouraged to make simple improvements to pages that interest them. (Being aware of this feature would be helpful for all Teahouse hosts if you're likely to offer advice on tasks for them to start out doing.)
 • There's also a 'Your impact' box to show them how many people have seen the pages they've just edited.
 • Finally, each new user is randomly assigned a 'mentor' from a list of friendly, experienced editors, like yourself. If they get stuck, they can ask a question directly to them via a Your mentor box, and hopefully get a swift, friendly answer from that mentor. Currently, this feature is given to 2% of new users, but it's set to increase to around 10% in the very near future.

To spread the load on our current list of around 65 mentors, I'm reaching out to ask if you'd like to help out and sign up as one? The workload is relatively small; User Panini! reports receiving four questions a month, on average, all of which were simple ones of the type we already get at the Teahouse, whilst I've had just one in the last 3 weeks. To view a list of every question asked of all mentors over the last 14 days, click here.

If becoming a mentor and being available to help new users on their first few days here interests you - just as have done at the Teahouse in the past - then please consider signing up at Growth Team features/Mentor list. But please only do so if you are genuinely willing to be available to help. Existing users can already 'opt-in' to seeing the Newcomer Homepage features via their Preferences.

Thank you! Nick Moyes (talk) 15:37, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi Nick Moyes! I'd love to participate, but unfortunately due to how horribly inconsistent my activity is (I tend to go one month with many edits, then go inactive and only edit once a day the next few months), I don't think I'll be capable for a role that expects stable activity. however, I'll probably be considering it when I go active again! happy editing!  melecie  t - 03:29, 26 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi Mohamed09252! there are likely many people in the world named Mohammad Abdi, however the page is about the Iranian author. if you want to create an article about the Somalu musician, you can create a draft at Draft:Mohammad Abdi (Somalu artist) (and you'll probably want to read WP:My first article as well to know the do's and don'ts of article creation). however, please do not change an existing article's subject to another person, even if they share the same name. happy editing!  melecie  t - 11:06, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mohamed09252: I'd love to help however I'm not skilled in creating articles, so all I could really help you with is pointing you on where to start. I advise you to take a look at it and the notability requirements for music and musicians (which determines if the article can be created). if you have further questions, feel free to ask at the teahouse, we're always open and some of us may be able to help with your article once it gets off the ground. happy editing!  melecie  t - 11:52, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Template reason

Hi, I was advised to add a Template:Proposed deletion tag at the top of the Mayor of Wigan article, I just need help summarising my rationale in the "reason" column please:

 • Article cites only one government data source, sparsely (failing WP:1R)
 • Unlike the Mayor of Greater Manchester as a whole, insufficient sourcing is available
 • I can't foresee a scenario were the topic becomes WP:Notable or gains sufficient coverage outside the government data site
 • WP isn't an indiscriminate collection of information)

(talk page stalker)Melecie, if you don't my my stepping in, I can provide a bit of information here. Deulapeep, generally interviews are not counted towards establishing notability, and high school newspapers are not a prominent enough source to be used for notability purposes either. Mayor of Wigan

Hi Melecie, I wanted to list the article at WP:AfD but was told it was unlikely that it wouldn't be found to be notable, but I'd still like to make the case for deletion at the talk page at least. Or maybe it could be redirected to Wigan#Governance?
Would you please help me put my points across clearly? My rationale is:

 • Article cites only one government data source, sparsely (failing WP:1R)
 • Unlike the Mayor of Greater Manchester as a whole, insufficient sourcing is available
 • I can't foresee a scenario were the topic becomes WP:Notable or gains sufficient coverage outside the local area/government data site
 • WP isn't an indiscriminate collection of information

Thank you -- CalSmith2 (talk) 19:37, 4 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi CalSmith2 I've responded almost two weeks back (has it just been two weeks? feels longer) in the WP:Teahouse regarding this: you could phrase it as Article fails notability and cites only one government data source, with insufficient sourcing compared to Mayor of Greater Machester.. unfortunately I can't really help you with AfD, as aside from april fools joke AfDs I have no experience with it. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 01:25, 5 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I added that to a proposed deletion tag at the top of the page, but it was removed. What I meant was could you explain my above concerns to the article talk page for me? Or maybe redirect the article to Wigan#Governance please? Regards, -- CalSmith2 (talk) 02:21, 5 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Biog updates for myself:iain mckee

Hi, I am Iain Mckee and just tried to edit my own Biography. To keep it up to date. Could you help me with this possibly. I’m very new to Wikipedia and not great with all this. But I’d like my info up to date and correct. Many thanks Iain. Stuartjames13 (talk) 09:46, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi Stuartjames13! if you indeed are mckee, please do not edit the page directly. it would be considered conflict of interest editing, where you may be influenced by your own connection to the subject, in this case being the subject. instead, you can create an edit request, which allows you to state your additions to the article so others can add it in and tweak it if needed. additionally, whether or not you're mckee, you have to cite reliable sources that are independent of you for every addition to the article: biographies of living persons have higher standards than most and only information that can already be obtained from mainstream sources can be added. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 09:53, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Stuartjames13, please provide reliable sources independent of you for information to be added to the page. if they're connected to you, they can't be used. you don't need to add the latest information about yourself in your article, although information has to be verifiable, true, and reported on by others before they can be added. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 10:08, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can you give me the markup for your signature?

I like it and have had complaints about my signature being unreadable so I'd like to experiment with your format Immanuelle 💗 (please tag me) 19:35, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi Immanuelle! your signature is considered unreadable as it blends in too well with white with a contrast of 1.49. you can check color contrast here: Coolors' contrast checker, and set it to the colors you want. ideally, the contrast should be at least 7 points.
as for my signature, the code of that would be 💜 <span style="border:solid 1px; border-radius:7px;background:#226;border-color:#338"><span style="color:#edf"> melecie </span></span> <span style="color=#edf">talk</span> - (note that there are non-breaking spaces inside, so you may wanna check the source through editing) which would produce my signature: 💜  melecie  talk - (and yes, the dash is part of the signature, which provides a separation between the signature itself and the timestamp)
for the circle background alone, try this: <span style="border:solid 1px; border-radius:7px;background:#226;border-color:#338"><span style="color:#edf"> melecie </span></span> which would produce  melecie , where you can replace the melecie with a link to your own page. also keep contrast in mind when changing the colors, ideally a very dark background with very light text would work. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 00:32, 4 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Death of John R. Cherry III

I edited his death date because I just got word this morning that he passed away. I run his Facebook page and website (for the past 11 years) and he is a personal friend. I am devastated! 2601:484:C500:610:58F6:75C0:6D04:D9CD (talk) 13:41, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi ip user! unfortunately, you can't break the news to wikipedia yet, at least until news sources deemed reliable for wikipedia have also reported on it. due to your conflict of interest (as he is your friend), you would also have to put it through an edit request at the page instead of directly changing it to allow others to check if your sources are valid and tweak it if necessary. (also, you may've forgotten to log in again.) happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 13:45, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ruben Rivera Reversion

Hello,

I saw that you had reverted my edit on the page for the baseball player Ruben Rivera. I did change the word "took" to "stole," but I'm not sure how that constitutes a BLP violation. Could I ask you to point out where it went wrong? BLP to me always seemed a little nebulous so any understanding I might gain would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Dkendr (talk) 14:46, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi Dkendr! I don't think I reverted your edit. I reverted the one after yours which seemed to add something without sources, which is typically a reflex for me to immediately revert-BLP, even though it was probably just a case of disruptive editing since it has been cited later in the article, only misplaced. apologies for the confusion and happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 01:06, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the clarification and note. Makes much sense now. Dkendr (talk) 02:07, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bryson Stott

I changed "home run" to "homer" so that the sentence would read more smoothly. If that isn't a minor edit, than I don't know what is. (I have made 6000+ edits, so I'm not a beginner here.) Friothaire (talk) 02:06, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi Friothaire and apologies! I thought "homer" was a typo. I'm not too experienced with baseball terminology (I know only a bit of baseball's rules and terminology thanks to Blaseball, although I have only learned of that recently and didn't get to participate), but since it seems to only be a nickname, wouldn't it be more formal to just say "home run?" since it still isn't a typo, I've retracted your warning. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 02:15, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
"Homer" is a short version of the words "home run", but I will leave the text as "home run". Friothaire (talk) 03:35, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question about permissions

I wanted to update the journal page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Journal_of_Physiology) with a new image but when I tried to do this it said that I do not have th permission to use the image. We do have permission. What do you need to do to prove permission rights on wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by IAhmed (talkcontribs) 14:45, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi IAhmed! you could upload it through Wikipedia instead as a non-free file and not Commons, replacing File:The Journal of Physiology.gif. you'd also have to review through Non-free content for the guidelines on these images.
if instead you'd want to upload it to Commons (which is preferred but usually not an option for most copyrighted works) and you are or know who owns the copyright for these covers, please tell them to check out Volunteer Response Team and submit an email to release it under a free license. note that this does mean that others will be able to use, share, modify, and use the image commercially even outside of wikipedia/the wikimedia family of wikis.
happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 01:47, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Buchiekoong123 (06:16, 10 June 2022)

hello if i go to other wikies will i be logged into does --Buchiekoong123 (talk) 06:16, 10 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi @Buchiekoong123! you'll be logged on to accounts as long as the site is part of the wikimedia family. so for example, if you log in to say, Wikimedia Commons, Wiktionary or Wikibooks, you'll be logged in to your Buchiekoong123 account. however this doesn't apply to all wikis (or even all wikis running MediaWiki software), so if you want to log in to say, Fandom, you'll have to create a new account there that'll apply to its family of wikis but not wikipedia. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 01:39, 11 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Hoymate (02:19, 20 June 2022)

Hello! I just read your history of the Pieta in the Vatican. We visited the Vatican in the late 60's and well before the sculpture was vandalized. Back then it was unprotected and visitors could RUB Jesus' foot. The top of his foot was worn almost smooth from millions of hands through the centuries. I rubbed Jesus's foot on the Pieta. I feel this should be mentioned in this article but I have no link to support this. --Hoymate (talk) 02:19, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi @Hoymate and welcome to wikipedia! you need a link or any sort of reliable source (including paper articles) to support this before you can add it in. do some searching using google news, has anyone commented on this fact before or on its protection? happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 02:46, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As you sugested, I did a Google search and came up with this list. Rubbing the feet is akin to washing the feet as Jesus did. https://www.google.com/search?q=why+did+people+rub+jesus+foot+pieta+statue&source=lmns&client=firefox-b-1-d&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjHpdyfgrz4AhXLnuAKHaGzB5EQ_AUoAHoECAEQAA 35.140.67.230 (talk) 12:26, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
why did people rub jesus foot pieta statue Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL
maybe one could be used to prove it, but don't forget to review the Reliable sources guideline before adding it in. you may also want to visit Talk:Pietà (Michelangelo) to notify other editors interested in the article and discuss whether the source/s would be appropriate. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 03:09, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

One of the youngest Wikipedians ever

you joined in the 4th of November of 2017, which makes you one of the youngest wikipedians evr Gavinvin13 (talk) 04:06, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi Gavinvin13 and welcome to wikipedia! I may've joined on 2017 but I only started actually being active last year, and besides even though we have a couple of people who've been present since the 2000s, there are much newer people here. if you have any questions regarding wikipedia please drop them here, happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 05:21, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
also, you have way too many userboxes, which I'm also trying to learn those.
I'm pretty new here! Gavinvin13 (talk) 02:00, 23 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
userbox is pretty simple once you've gotten the hang of templates and inserting images (see Pictures), although for more advanced customization like gradients you'd also want to learn some CSS. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 02:59, 23 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Supa The Barber on User:Supa The Barber (23:57, 23 June 2022)

How do I start my own page --Supa The Barber (talk) 23:57, 23 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How long does it take for my page to show active? --Supa The Barber (talk) 00:08, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi @Supa The Barber and welcome to wikipedia! are you planning to create a page about yourself? if that's so, unfortunately it's best if you avoid that. as ScottishFinnishRadish has stated on your talk page, autobiographies are discouraged as it is hard to make one that will also fit in Wikipedia's policies, namely Neutral point of view, plus it's also a conflict of interest since you are the subject. if people believe you deserve an article, they will make one of you, but only once you have met the notability standards (in this case, of people) which everything has to meet before getting an article, however do note that there are reasons to not want an article.
if you want to write an article about something else, ideally something you know a lot about but are not personally connected with, you can by reading Your first article, stocking up on Reliable sources (also read that! it's important), and analyzing whether they meet the notability criteria for their field. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 06:01, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question from User:IAhmed

Page query

I wanted to create a page for the EiC of our journal. Whats the best way to do this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by IAhmed (talkcontribs) 08:23, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi IAhmed! first question, is your editor in chief notable? I suggest avoiding making a page altogether since you're connected to them and that counts as a conflict of interest at the very least, although if you still want to continue forward then check whether they meet the notability criteria: that decides whether your subject can have an article.
once that's done, please check out Reliable sources and Your first article for actually writing your article. happy editing — Preceding unsigned comment added by Melecie (talkcontribs) 03:00, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I created a page here and have tried to reference anything: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prof_Peter_Kohl If you spot anything which needs to be sourced better with references let me know and I will make all suggested corrections. — Preceding unsigned comment added by IAhmed (talkcontribs) 09:36, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
