Adoption?[edit]

Hi,

I see you want to be adopted. May I have the honour?

BlueGoblin7even 21:41, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, cool. I'll set you up a page in my adoption programme if you wish to take it, or else you may just ask if you need help!
And yes, my Userpage is best viewed in Firefox... i haven't checked it in IE/Safari yet (doing IE now...)
In particular, what's worng with it?
If you have any questions, ask me!
BlueGoblin7even 21:56, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm... it seems alrite to me in IE - i'll try in Safari tomorrow. What browser are you using?
For now i'll remove it i think.
BlueGoblin7even 22:08, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've flaged the sharedIP tag for that address but I think it is shared IP from a network provider or a business although I don't what RoadRunner is since it is in Virginia but I think it is not a college. The WHOIS (which detects where the IP is) usually gives the name of the college, university or school board what it is from an educational institution. Soure you're welcome.--JForget 00:06, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are you trolling?[edit]

Hi. Are you here to contribute in some useful way to the encyclopedia, or are you just trolling? Everything from your username, to your userpage, to your contributions suggests the latter. If you actually want to do something useful, I suggest you make a new account and start over. Friday (talk) 21:45, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'm going to remove the link to the shock site from your userpage. I still suggest you get a different username if you want to be taken remotely seriously. Friday (talk) 21:51, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I second this recommendation... I urge you consider a change in username. – ClockworkSoul 02:23, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've already considered it. Meaty♠Weenies (talk) 13:03, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AtheWeatherman[edit]

Thanks very much Meaty for posting the first message to me AtheWeatherman on my talk page. I appreciate it! Hope to talk again later! —Preceding unsigned comment added by AtheWeatherman (talkcontribs) 19:47, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I've already done tons of edits and I know Wikipedia is not a social network site, use MSN for that! Thanks for the tip, though! Just trying to be friendly. AtheWeatherman (talk) 20:04, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I agree, friendliness is the key to lots of things, including Wikipedia. I'm very new myself, having only joined a few weeks ago but I feel I am settling in very nicely. Anyway thanks for all your help Meaty. Appreciate it. AtheWeatherman (talk) 20:19, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You deserved the Barnstar. I was surprised to find you had not got one before! —Preceding unsigned comment added by AtheWeatherman (talkcontribs) 21:03, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As regards the userpage and the userboxes, I have tried (and failed!) to organise the userboxes. If you could help me do that or just teach me how to do it that would be fantastic.AtheWeatherman (talk) 17:22, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for sorting the userboxes for me, I really appreciate it. Thanks to you I now know something new! —Preceding unsigned comment added by AtheWeatherman (talkcontribs) 18:02, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your comments on my talk page, I found they did help me and thanks for the message. —Preceding unsigned comment added by AtheWeatherman (talkcontribs) 19:27, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'm already enjoying editing and I find it fufilling, knowing you are helping people. I will be bold but not wrecklessin editing. Thanks for the comment. AtheWeatherman (talk) 15:40, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you move this into the template space? Per userbox migration, non encyclopedia userboxes should be in the userspace. Furthermore, did you ask Vandal Warrior for permission before moving his userpage? xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 18:37, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Non-encyclopedic userboxes should have the syntax User:Meaty Weenies/name of userbox. Please see WP:UBX and WP:UBM for more on this. Best regards, xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 18:58, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Those userboxes should be ok, since they're somewhat encyclopedic. Just keep in mind any "silly" (for lack of a better word) userboxes like "This user likes GTA", "This user likes pie", "This user wouldn't mind being slapped with a rainbow trout" should be created as a subpage of your userspace. If you're not sure, ask me, or err on the side of caution and put it in your userspace. Happy userboxing! xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 19:05, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Got it! Thanks. Meaty♠Weenies (talk) 19:07, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment for Devon[edit]

Hi, Well done for getting the article assessment up & running for wikiproject Devon. I did the same job for Somerset so if I can help let me know. I see you've added Exmoor as an FA & I've taken the liberty of adding South West Coast Path & Grand Western Canal which are both GA & apply to Devon.— Rod talk 19:44, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks but I've got plenty to do with WP Somerset & a few other bits - I've only added those where they are shared between our projects. I wouldn't do importance assessments where I'm not a project member but I don't mind adding FA, GA etc as they are externally validated. I did do some editing on Blackdown Hills a few weeks ago which is rated start for Somerset. It has a project banner for Devon but no rating - it's probably not far off a B now.— Rod talk 20:28, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just added Lundy which is also a GA I've worked on.— Rod talk 20:39, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure what your last message was asking about - is it log files of the assessment you want? if so look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Somerset/Assessment the log there is produced automatically (every 3 days or so) by adding {{Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Somerset articles by quality log}}.— Rod talk 22:16, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the Somerset automated log & quality processes were set up by User:Simply south who is much more expert on this than I am (& approachable).— Rod talk 22:21, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. Just create categories on all the classes and importance\priority but make sure they have Devon articles or Devon-related articles at the end e.g. Category:Start-Class Devon articles and Category:High-importance Devon articles and related. If you are still confused on how to do i will be glad to set it up. Simply south (talk)
Glad you got this sorted - for any similar issues & relevant guidelines etc visit WP:UKGEO where someone has probably dealt with similar issues.— Rod talk 07:42, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ITN trial period[edit]

Please see Wikipedia talk:In the news 2.0#A modest proposal and Template talk:In the news#Change in ITN/c format. This means that candidates should be added in that day's (May 28) "ITN candidates for this day" (click "edit" inside the box). In fact, the Nepal news has already been suggested there. Thanks.--Pharos (talk) 22:01, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

comment on MfD[edit]

I left a comment on Wikipedia:Miscellany_for_deletion/WikiProject_Devon_vs_Devon about how you can ask admins to delete pages that you created yourself, without having to go trought the bother of opening a deletion discussion --Enric Naval (talk) 21:40, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see in the history of any of those pages ( I checked almost all of them ) where you requested CSD. Just put {{db-author}} on the pages and they should get wiped away. xenocidic (talk) 21:47, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Meaty, I have no idea on what the bot will do with the categories, you should ask on the bot page --Enric Naval (talk) 22:02, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Map on Exeter bombing article[edit]

I just thought I would let you know that the the location of the explosion on the map is in the wrong place. The giraffe restaurant is in blue boy square. Which is on the intersection between the princesshay lane, eastgate street and princesshay street. Which is to the North East of where you currently have it. If you have any questions about it just let me know. --Benjaminevans82 (talk) 23:09, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it depends[edit]

How many editors won't know what the word "period" means in the phrase "periods and spaces"? If we gave both the British (or Australian or...) and American words for everything in Wikipedia, articles would be longer and not a lot of people would be much wiser. WP:MOS is in American English; other pages are in other varieties of English. But if you think there are a lot of people who don't know what a "period" is, then I wouldn't be hostile to making an exception in an important guideline like WP:MOS. - Dan Dank55 (talk)(mistakes) 02:43, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help[edit]

{{helpme}}Can I upload this image onto Wikipedia (I'd prefer onto commons, though). If so what license should I give it? http://www.bbc.co.uk/devon/content/image_galleries/it_came_to_our_door_book_gallery.shtml?6 }}

  • If you can find the image's author, maybe. I don't know what the image history is , so you might wanna do more research. Also, new posts in a talk page should go to the bottom. Ten Pound Hammer and his otters(Broken clamshellsOtter chirps) 18:32, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi. The copyright belongs to the author, and it only becomes public domain 70 years after their death. As this photo was presumably taken in the 1940s it does not yet qualify. Nor could you realistically argue that it is fair use. So I would say unfortunately no, not without permission of the copyright holder. -- zzuuzz (talk) 18:36, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But it's used as the front cover of the book It Came To Our Door and on the gallery on BBC, which put together a collabaration of World War Two photos that were "lost" for a long time. I doubt that the authoer of the book or the BBC have the author's direct permission. Meaty♠Weenies (talk) 18:51, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Under the other info section for buying this book it says "Illustrations & Other Content Notes: 400 b&w photographs, many previously unseen". http://www.whsmith.co.uk/CatalogAndSearch/ProductDetails-It+Came+to+Our+Door+-9780954348038.html#
You would need to see the book to see what they say about ownership of copyright. The BBC can claim fair use where we cannot. They are also quite likely to have explicit permission. -- zzuuzz (talk) 18:56, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It seems a little odd that these images from World War Two were put into a book and sold for money and now Wikipedia, a non profit organisation, cannot use the images to display the Plymouth Bliz. Meaty♠Weenies (talk) 18:59, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I believe you were actually reviewing the wrong image here. Try try the link at the top of the section again. Meaty♠Weenies (talk) 19:01, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I saw that. Unfortunately no one can comment on selling the book for money until you know more about the ownership of copyright. Perhaps the author of the book paid the author of the photo a shedload of cash and now you're proposing to give it away for free. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:13, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How about these bad boys? Meaty♠Weenies (talk) 19:18, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see no evidence that these are in the public domain (the works are credited so you may be able to check further). Also see Wikipedia:Public_domain#German_World_War_II_images and possibly ask at WP:MCQ. You should try looking for photos by US service personnel as they are usually in the public domain, or perhaps ask at one of the WikiProjects. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:37, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Eugh, EU proving as useful as ever in intergrating europe there! Anyway at the bottom of the section it says "However, fair use cases can be made in many cases". I need some help on how to upload a fair use image though... Meaty♠Weenies (talk) 19:45, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good job.

Hope you don't get blocked, as I did, without any warning, a few days' ago.

Still no answer as to why, either.

I blocked you indefinitely. Apparently you were some user who'd been previously banned, but what really did it for me was that you've continued acting very juvenile with this account also. Wikipedia is for editors who can behave like reasonable adults. Friday (talk) 16:11, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Goatse.cz homepage.png)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Goatse.cz homepage.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 01:08, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review limits[edit]

Hi Meaty Weenies, I noticed you have two peer review requests in at WP:PR, which were entered on the same day. There is a new policy on limits for peer review at Wikipedia:Peer review/Request removal policy, which is summarized on the PR page. I am not going to remove either of the two requests made on the same day, but if this happens again, they will be removed in the future. Thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:41, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please refrain from introducing inappropriate pages such as Image:Goatse.cz homepage.png, to Wikipedia. Doing so is not in accordance with our policies. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Goatse.cz homepage.png|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Nn123645 (talk) 00:55, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:List-Class Devon pages, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:List-Class Devon pages has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:List-Class Devon pages, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself.
