American String Quartet

Thanks for your interesting addition to the article. I felt, however, that making it a separate section, and putting it immediately after the lead of the article, was a bit of overkill. So I added the quotes to the "Composition" section, and also included a reference to the use of the pentatonic in spirituals. I removed the examples, though. I thought they might be appropriate in the article on spirituals, but not particularly relevant to this article.

Hi Marlindale! I just noticed your edit listing Stowell as editor, rather than author, of his book on the Beethoven Violin Concerto. I have just double-checked my copy and I can't see any sign that's the case - there are no other authors listed in the title page, in the preface or in the individual chapter headings. Bach

Thank you for adding to Bach. Please always mention a citation, even for facts that you think everybody knows, as his youngest son. Of the composer sons I decided to mention only CPE Bach in the Lead. I wanted to mention JC Bach somewhere. At first I thought I would put him in Legacy but I didn't see a good opportunity there. I tried to put him in chronologically by his date of birth, although I also was not comfortable with that. But I have Spitta to consult for a citation. In the lead of the JC Bach article it's said he influenced Mozart's concerto style. Important if so? But I don't suggest repeating that in the JS Bach article. Brahms

I was surprised you threw in the towel so quickly. Geiringer cites this "one piece" not as an exception, but as an example, one among many, many, that confirm the integral nature of contrapuntal writing in Brahms's style. You (and Geiringer, Swafford, and just about every other scholar who has written about Brahms) are right, and Tony, despite his authoritative (should I say supercillious?) tone, is wrong. Thanks for your comment. Male composers are usually referred to by their surnames, such as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart. But I think female ones seem better referred to by their given names, for example Clara Schumann as Clara, Amy Beach as Amy, Nadia Boulanger as Nadia, Lili Boulanger as Lili. MOS:SURNAME does not differentiate between genders and I'm not sure they should be handled any differently (except in the case of Clara Schumann, when the use of her surname would cause confusion with her husband, so first names would make sense for both of them), but I'm not going to argue the point.
